Lee-Yang zeros for DHL and 2D rational dynamics, I. Foliation of the physical cylinder

In a classical work of the 1950's, Lee and Yang proved that the zeros of the partition functions of a ferromagnetic Ising models always lie on the unit circle. Distribution of these zeros is physically important as it controls phase transitions in the model. We study this distribution for the Migdal-Kadanoff Diamond Hierarchical Lattice (DHL). In this case, it can be described in terms of the dynamics of an explicit rational function $\RR$ in two variables (the renormalization transformation). We prove that $\RR$ is partially hyperbolic on an invariant cylinder $\CC$. The Lee-Yang zeros are organized in a transverse measure for the central-stable foliation of $\RR|\, \CC$. Their distribution is absolutely continuous. Its density is $C^\infty$ (and non-vanishing) below the critical temperature. Above the critical temperature, it is $C^\infty$ on a open dense subset, but it vanishes on the complementary Cantor set of positive measure. This seems to be the first occasion of a complete rigorous description of the Lee-Yang distributions beyond 1D models.

Uniform Asymptotics for Discrete Orthogonal Polynomials with Respect to Varying Exponential Weights on a Regular Infinite Lattice

We consider the large-$N$ asymptotics of a system of discrete orthogonal polynomials on an infinite regular lattice of mesh $\frac{1}{N}$, with weight $e^{-NV(x)}$, where $V(x)$ is a real analytic function with sufficient growth at infinity. The proof is based on formulation of an interpolation problem for discrete orthogonal polynomials, which can be converted to a Riemann-Hilbert problem, and steepest descent analysis of this Riemann-Hilbert problem.

Random matrix model with external source and a constrained vector equilibrium problem

We consider the random matrix model with external source, in case where the potential V(x) is an even polynomial and the external source has two eigenvalues a, -a of equal multiplicity. We show that the limiting mean eigenvalue distribution of this model can be characterized as the first component of a pair of measures (mu_1,mu_2) that solve a constrained vector equilibrium problem. The proof is based on the steepest descent analysis of the associated Riemann-Hilbert problem for multiple orthogonal polynomials. We illustrate our results in detail for the case of a quartic double well potential V(x) = x^4/4 - tx^2/2. We are able to determine the precise location of the phase transitions in the ta-plane, where either the constraint becomes active, or the two intervals in the support come together (or both).

Exact solution of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions. Antiferroelectric phase

We obtain the large $n$ asymptotics of the partition function $Z_n$ of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions in the antiferroelectric phase region, with the weights $a=\sinh(\ga-t), b=\sinh(\ga+t), c=\sinh(2\ga), |t|<\ga$. We prove the conjecture of Zinn-Justin, that as $n\to\infty$, $Z_n=Cþ_4(n\om) F^{n^2}[1+O(n^{-1})]$, where $\om$ and $F$ are given by explicit expressions in $\ga$ and $t$, and $þ_4(z)$ is the Jacobi theta function. The proof is based on the Riemann-Hilbert approach to the large $n$ asymptotic expansion of the underlying discrete orthogonal polynomials and on the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method.

Exact solution of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary condition. Critical line between ferroelectric and disordered phases

This is a continuation of the papers [4] of Bleher and Fokin and [5] of Bleher and Liechty, in which the large $n$ asymptotics is obtained for the partition function $Z_n$ of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions in the disordered and ferroelectric phases, respectively. In the present paper we obtain the large $n$ asymptotics of $Z_n$ on the critical line between these two phases.

Exact solution of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions. Ferroelectric phase

This is a continuation of the paper [4] of Bleher and Fokin, in which the large $n$ asymptotics is obtained for the partition function $Z_n$ of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions in the disordered phase. In the present paper we obtain the large $n$ asymptotics of $Z_n$ in the ferroelectric phase. We prove that for any $\ep>0$, as $n\to\infty$, $Z_n=CG^nF^{n^2}[1+O(e^{-n^{1-\ep}})]$, and we find the exact value of the constants $C,G$ and $F$. The proof is based on the large $n$ asymptotics for the underlying discrete orthogonal polynomials and on the Toda equation for the tau-function.

Zeros of sections of exponential sums

We derive the large $n$ asymptotics of zeros of sections of a generic exponential sum. We divide all the zeros of the $n$-th section of the exponential sum into ``genuine zeros'', which approach, as $n\to\infty$, the zeros of the exponential sum, and ``spurious zeros'', which go to infinity as $n\to\infty$. We show that the spurious zeros, after scaling down by the factor of $n$, approach a ``rosette'', a finite collection of curves on the complex plane, resembling the rosette. We derive also the large $n$ asymptotics of the ``transitional zeros'', the intermediate zeros between genuine and spurious ones. Our results give an extension to the classical results of Szegö about the large $n$ asymptotics of zeros of sections of the exponential, sine, and cosine functions.

Exact Solution of the Six-Vertex Model with Domain Wall Boundary Conditions. Disordered Phase

The six-vertex model, or the square ice model, with domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) has been introduced and solved for finite $N$ by Korepin and Izergin. The solution is based on the Yang-Baxter equations and it represents the free energy in terms of an $N\times N$ Hankel determinant. Paul Zinn-Justin observed that the Izergin-Korepin formula can be re-expressed in terms of the partition function of a random matrix model with a nonpolynomial interaction. We use this observation to obtain the large $N$ asymptotics of the six-vertex model with DWBC in the disordered phase. The solution is based on the Riemann-Hilbert approach and the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method. As was noticed by Kuperberg, the problem of enumeration of alternating sign matrices (the ASM problem) is a special case of the the six-vertex model. We compare the obtained exact solution of the six-vertex model with known exact results for the 1, 2, and 3 enumerations of ASMs, and also with the exact solution on the so-called free fermion line. We prove the conjecture of Zinn-Justin that the partition function of the six-vertex model with DWBC has the asymptotics, $Z_N\sim CN^κe^{N^2f}$ as $N\to\infty$, and we find the exact value of the exponent $κ$.

Asymptotics of the partition function of a random matrix model

We prove a number of results concerning the large $N$ asymptotics of the free energy of a random matrix model with a polynomial potential $V(z)$. Our approach is based on a deformation $τ_tV(z)$ of $V(z)$ to $z^2$, $0\le t<\infty$ and on the use of the underlying integrable structures of the matrix model. The main results include (1) the existence of a full asymptotic expansion in powers of $N^{-2}$ of the recurrence coefficients of the related orthogonal polynomials, for a one-cut regular $V$; (2) the existence of a full asymptotic expansion in powers of $N^{-2}$ of the free energy, for a $V$, which admits a one-cut regular deformation $τ_tV$; (3) the analyticity of the coefficients of the asymptotic expansions of the recurrence coefficients and the free energy, with respect to the coefficients of $V$; (4) the one-sided analyticity of the recurrent coefficients and the free energy for a one-cut singular $V$; (5) the double scaling asymptotics of the free energy for a singular quartic polynomial $V$.

Correlations between zeros of a random polynomial

We obtain exact analytical expressions for correlations between real zeros of the Kac random polynomial. We show that the zeros in the interval $(-1,1)$ are asymptotically independent of the zeros outside of this interval, and that the straightened zeros have the same limit translation invariant correlations. Then we calculate the correlations between the straightened zeros of the SO(2) random polynomial.

Double scaling limit in the random matrix model: the Riemann-Hilbert approach

We prove the existence of the double scaling limit in the unitary matrix model with quartic interaction, and we show that the correlation functions in the double scaling limit are expressed in terms of the integrable kernel determined by the psi-function for the Hastings-McLeod solution to the Painlevé II equation. The proof is based on the Riemann-Hilbert approach.

SU(1,1) Random Polynomials

We study statistical properties of zeros of random polynomials and random analytic functions associated with the pseudoeuclidean group of symmetries SU(1,1), by utilizing both analytical and numerical techniques. We first show that zeros of the SU(1,1) random polynomial of degree $N$ are concentrated in a narrow annulus of the order of $N^{-1}$ around the unit circle on the complex plane, and we find an explicit formula for the scaled density of the zeros distribution along the radius in the limit $N\to\infty$. Our results are supported through various numerical simulations. We then extend results of Hannay \cite{H} and Bleher, Shiffman, Zelditch \cite{BSZ2} to derive different formulae for correlations between zeros of the SU(1,1) random analytic functions, by applying the generalized Kac-Rice formula. We express the correlation functions in terms of some Gaussian integrals, which can be evaluated combinatorially as a finite sum over Feynman diagrams or as a supersymmetric integral. Due to the SU(1,1) symmetry, the correlation functions depend only on the hyperbolic distances between the points on the unit disk, and we obtain an explicit formula for the two point correlation function. It displays quadratic repulsion at small distances and fast decay of correlations at infinity. In an appendix to the paper we evaluate correlations between the outer zeros $|z_j|>1$ of the SU(1,1) random polynomial, and we prove that the inner and outer zeros are independent in the limit when the degree of the polynomial goes to infinity.

Correlations between zeros and supersymmetry

In our previous work [math-ph/9904020], we proved that the correlation functions for simultaneous zeros of random generalized polynomials have universal scaling limits and we gave explicit formulas for pair correlations in codimensions 1 and 2. The purpose of this paper is to compute these universal limits in all dimensions and codimensions. First, we use a supersymmetry method to express the n-point correlations as Berezin integrals. Then we use the Wick method to give a closed formula for the limit pair correlation function for the point case in all dimensions.

Universality and scaling of zeros on symplectic manifolds

This article is concerned with random holomorphic polynomials and their generalizations to algebraic and symplectic geometry. A natural algebro-geometric generalization studied in our prior work involves random holomorphic sections $H^0(M,L^N)$ of the powers of any positive line bundle $L \to M$ over any complex manifold. Our main interest is in the statistics of zeros of $k$ independent sections (generalized polynomials) of degree $N$ as $N\to\infty$. We fix a point $P$ and focus on the ball of radius $1/\sqrt{N}$ about $P$. Under a microscope magnifying the ball by the factor $\sqrt{N}$, the statistics of the configurations of simultaneous zeros of random $k$-tuples of sections tends to a universal limit independent of $P,M,L$. We review this result and generalize it further to the case of pre-quantum line bundles over almost-complex symplectic manifolds $(M,J,ω)$. Following [SZ2], we replace $H^0(M,L^N)$ in the complex case with the `asymptotically holomorphic' sections defined by Boutet de Monvel-Guillemin and (from another point of view) by Donaldson and Auroux. Using a generalization to an $m$-dimensional setting of the Kac-Rice formula for zero correlations together with the results of [SZ2], we prove that the scaling limits of the correlation functions for zeros of random $k$-tuples of asymptotically holomorphic sections belong to the same universality class as in the complex case.

Semiclassical asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials, Riemann-Hilbert problem, and universality in the matrix model

We derive semiclassical asymptotics for the orthogonal polynomials P_n(z) on the line with respect to the exponential weight \exp(-NV(z)), where V(z) is a double-well quartic polynomial, in the limit when n, N \to \infty. We assume that ε\le (n/N) \le λ_{cr} - εfor some ε> 0, where λ_{cr} is the critical value which separates orthogonal polynomials with two cuts from the ones with one cut. Simultaneously we derive semiclassical asymptotics for the recursive coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials, and we show that these coefficients form a cycle of period two which drifts slowly with the change of the ratio n/N. The proof of the semiclassical asymptotics is based on the methods of the theory of integrable systems and on the analysis of the appropriate matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. As an application of the semiclassical asymptotics of the orthogonal polynomials, we prove the universality of the local distribution of eigenvalues in the matrix model with the double-well quartic interaction in the presence of two cuts.

Universality and scaling of correlations between zeros on complex manifolds

We study the limit as $N\to\infty$ of the correlations between simultaneous zeros of random sections of the powers $L^N$ of a positive holomorphic line bundle $L$ over a compact complex manifold $M$, when distances are rescaled so that the average density of zeros is independent of $N$. We show that the limit correlation is independent of the line bundle and depends only on the dimension of $M$ and the codimension of the zero sets. We also provide some explicit formulas for pair correlations. In particular, we provide an alternate derivation of Hannay's limit pair correlation function for SU(2) polynomials, and we show that this correlation function holds for all compact Riemann surfaces.

Poincare-Lelong approach to universality and scaling of correlations between zeros

This note is concerned with the scaling limit as N approaches infinity of n-point correlations between zeros of random holomorphic polynomials of degree N in m variables. More generally we study correlations between zeros of holomorphic sections of powers L^N of any positive holomorphic line bundle L over a compact Kahler manifold. Distances are rescaled so that the average density of zeros is independent of N. Our main result is that the scaling limits of the correlation functions and, more generally, of the "correlation forms" are universal, i.e. independent of the bundle L, manifold M or point on M.
