Non-Weyl resonance asymptotics for quantum graphs in a magnetic field

We study asymptotical behaviour of resonances for a quantum graph consisting of a finite internal part and external leads placed into a magnetic field, in particular, the question whether their number follows the Weyl law. We prove that the presence of a magnetic field cannot change a non-Weyl asymptotics into a Weyl one and vice versa. On the other hand, we present examples demonstrating that for some non-Weyl graphs the ``effective size'' of the graph, and therefore the resonance asymptotics, can be affected by the magnetic field.

Tripartite connection condition for quantum graph vertex

We discuss formulations of boundary conditions in a quantum graph vertex and demonstrate that the so-called $ST$-form can be further reduced up to a form more effective in certain applications: In particular, in identifying the number of independent parameters for given ranks of two connection matrices, or in calculating the scattering matrix when both matrices are singular. The new form of boundary conditions, called the $PQRS$-form, also gives a natural scheme to design generalized low and high pass quantum filters.

Spectrum of Dirichlet Laplacian in a conical layer

We study spectral properties of Dirichlet Laplacian on the conical layer of the opening angle $π-2θ$ and thickness equal to $π$. We demonstrate that below the continuum threshold which is equal to one there is an infinite sequence of isolated eigenvalues and analyze properties of these geometrically induced bound states. By numerical computation we find examples of the eigenfunctions.

High-energy asymptotics of the spectrum of a periodic square-lattice quantum graph

We investigate a periodic quantum graph in form of a square lattice with a general self-adjoint coupling at the vertices. We analyze the spectrum, in particular, its high-energy behaviour. Depending on the coupling type, bands and gaps have different asymptotics. Bands may be flat even if the edges are coupled, and non-flat band widths may behave as $\mathcal{O}(n^j),\, j=1,0,-1,-2,-3$, as the band index $n\to\infty$. The gaps may be of asymptotically constant width or linearly growing with the latter case being generic.

Non-Weyl asymptotics for quantum graphs with general coupling conditions

Inspired by a recent result of Davies and Pushnitski, we study resonance asymptotics of quantum graphs with general coupling conditions at the vertices. We derive a criterion for the asymptotics to be of a non-Weyl character. We show that for balanced vertices with permutation-invariant couplings the asymptotics is non-Weyl only in case of Kirchhoff or anti-Kirchhoff conditions, while for graphs without permutation numerous examples of non-Weyl behaviour can be constructed. Furthermore, we present an insight helping to understand what makes the Kirchhoff/anti-Kirchhoff coupling particular from the resonance point of view. Finally, we demonstrate a generalization to quantum graphs with nonequal edge weights.

On the location of spectral edges in $\mathbb{Z}$-periodic media

Periodic $2$nd order ordinary differential operators on $\R$ are known to have the edges of their spectra to occur only at the spectra of periodic and antiperiodic boundary value problems. The multi-dimensional analog of this property is false, as was shown in a 2007 paper by some of the authors of this article. However, one sometimes encounters the claims that in the case of a single periodicity (i.e., with respect to the lattice $\mathbb{Z}$), the $1D$ property still holds, and spectral edges occur at the periodic and anti-periodic spectra only. In this work we show that even in the simplest case of quantum graphs this is not true. It is shown that this is true if the graph consists of a $1D$ chain of finite graphs connected by single edges, while if the connections are formed by at least two edges, the spectral edges can already occur away from the periodic and anti-periodic spectra.

On the absence of absolutely continuous spectra for Schrödinger operators on radial tree graphs

The subject of the paper are Schrödinger operators on tree graphs which are radial having the branching number $b_n$ at all the vertices at the distance $t_n$ from the root. We consider a family of coupling conditions at the vertices characterized by $(b_n-1)^2+4$ real parameters. We prove that if the graph is sparse so that there is a subsequence of $\{t_{n+1}-t_n\}$ growing to infinity, in the absence of the potential the absolutely continuous spectrum is empty for a large subset of these vertex couplings, but on the the other hand, there are cases when the spectrum of such a Schrödinger operator can be purely absolutely continuous.

Resonances from perturbations of quantum graphs with rationally related edges

We discuss quantum graphs consisting of a compact part and semiinfinite leads. Such a system may have embedded eigenvalues if some edge lengths in the compact part are rationally related. If such a relation is perturbed these eigenvalues may turn into resonances; we analyze this effect both generally and in simple examples.

Spectral filtering in quantum Y-junction

We examine scattering properties of singular vertex of degree $n=2$ and $n=3$, taking advantage of a new form of representing the vertex boundary condition, which has been devised to approximate a singular vertex with finite potentials. We show that proper identification of $δ$ and $δ'$ components in the connection condition between outgoing lines enables the designing of quantum spectral branch-filters.

Approximation of a general singular vertex coupling in quantum graphs

The longstanding open problem of approximating all singular vertex couplings in a quantum graph is solved. We present a construction in which the edges are decoupled; an each pair of their endpoints is joined by an edge carrying a $δ$ potential and a vector potential coupled to the "loose" edges by a $δ$ coupling. It is shown that if the lengths of the connecting edges shrink to zero and the potentials are properly scaled, the limit can yield any prescribed singular vertex coupling, and moreover, that such an approximation converges in the norm-resolvent sense.

Trotter-Kato product formula for unitary groups

Let $A$ and $B$ be non-negative self-adjoint operators in a separable Hilbert space such that its form sum $C$ is densely defined. It is shown that the Trotter product formula holds for imaginary times in the $L^2$-norm, that is, one has % % \begin{displaymath} \lim_{n\to+\infty}\int^T_0 \|(e^{-itA/n}e^{-itB/n})^nh - e^{-itC}h\|^2dt = 0 \end{displaymath} % % for any element $h$ of the Hilbert space and any $T > 0$. The result remains true for the Trotter-Kato product formula % % \begin{displaymath} \lim_{n\to+\infty}\int^T_0 \|(f(itA/n)g(itB/n))^nh - e^{-itC}h\|^2dt = 0 \end{displaymath} % % where $f(\cdot)$ and $g(\cdot)$ are so-called holomorphic Kato functions; we also derive a canonical representation for any function of this class.

The distribution of landed property

The distribution of property is established through various mechanisms. In this paper we study the acreage distribution of land plots owned by natural persons in the Zl\'ın Region of the Czech Republic. We show that the data are explained in terms of a simple model in which the inheritance and market behavior are combined.

Approximation of quantum graph vertex couplings by scaled Schrödinger operators on thin branched manifolds

We discuss approximations of vertex couplings of quantum graphs using families of thin branched manifolds. We show that if a Neumann type Laplacian on such manifolds is amended by suitable potentials, the resulting Schrödinger operators can approximate non-trivial vertex couplings. The latter include not only the delta-couplings but also those with wavefunctions discontinuous at the vertex. We work out the example of the symmetric delta'-couplings and conjecture that the same method can be applied to all couplings invariant with respect to the time reversal.

On the spectrum of a bent chain graph

We study Schrödinger operators on an infinite quantum graph of a chain form which consists of identical rings connected at the touching points by $δ$-couplings with a parameter $α\in\R$. If the graph is "straight", i.e. periodic with respect to ring shifts, its Hamiltonian has a band spectrum with all the gaps open whenever $α\ne 0$. We consider a "bending" deformation of the chain consisting of changing one position at a single ring and show that it gives rise to eigenvalues in the open spectral gaps. We analyze dependence of these eigenvalues on the coupling $α$ and the "bending angle" as well as resonances of the system coming from the bending. We also discuss the behaviour of the eigenvalues and resonances at the edges of the spectral bands.

Leaky Quantum Graphs: A Review

The aim of this review is to provide an overview of a recent work concerning ``leaky'' quantum graphs described by Hamiltonians given formally by the expression $-Δ-αδ(x-Γ)$ with a singular attractive interaction supported by a graph-like set in $\mathbb{R}^ν,\: ν=2,3$. We will explain how such singular Schrödinger operators can be properly defined for different codimensions of $Γ$. Furthermore, we are going to discuss their properties, in particular, the way in which the geometry of $Γ$ influences their spectra and the scattering, strong-coupling asymptotic behavior, and a discrete counterpart to leaky-graph Hamiltonians using point interactions. The subject cannot be regarded as closed at present, and we will add a list of open problems hoping that the reader will take some of them as a challenge.

A Markov process associated with plot-size distribution in Czech Land Registry and its number-theoretic properties

The size distribution of land plots is a result of land allocation processes in the past. In the absence of regulation this is a Markov process leading an equilibrium described by a probabilistic equation used commonly in the insurance and financial mathematics. We support this claim by analyzing the distribution of two plot types, garden and build-up areas, in the Czech Land Registry pointing out the coincidence with the distribution of prime number factors described by Dickman function in the first case.
