The Higgs Mass and the Stueckelberg Mechanism in Supersymmetry

We investigate a class of theories where the mass of the lightest Higgs boson of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) can be larger than the Z gauge boson mass at tree level. In this context the MSSM fields feel a new force, whose corresponding gauge boson attains its mass through the Stueckelberg mechanism. We show how one can achieve a Higgs mass around 126 GeV without assuming a heavy stop spectrum or a large stop trilinear term. The application of this class of models to the conservation of R-parity is also discussed.

The Electroweak Vacuum Angle

We reveal a new source of CP-violation in the electroweak sector that is free of any experimental bounds, and we highlight the possible implications for baryogenesis.

Baryonic Dark Matter

We investigate a simple extension of the Standard Model where the baryon number is a local gauge symmetry and the cold dark matter in the Universe can be described by a fermionic field with baryon number. We refer to this scenario as "Baryonic Dark Matter''. The stability of the dark matter candidate is a natural consequence of the spontaneous breaking of baryon number at the low scale and there is no need to impose an extra discrete symmetry. The constraints from the relic density and the predictions for direct detection are discussed in detail. We briefly discuss the testability of this model using the correlation between the Large Hadron Collider data and possible results from dark matter experiments.

Baryon Asymmetry, Dark Matter and Local Baryon Number

We propose a new mechanism to understand the relation between the baryon and dark matter asymmetries in the universe in theories where the baryon number is a local symmetry. In these scenarios the B-L asymmetry generated through a mechanism such as leptogenesis is transferred to the dark matter and baryonic sectors through sphalerons processes which conserve total baryon number. We show that it is possible to have a consistent relation between the dark matter relic density and the baryon asymmetry in the universe even if the baryon number is broken at the low scale through the Higgs mechanism. We also discuss the case where one uses the Stueckelberg mechanism to understand the conservation of baryon number in nature.

B and L at the SUSY Scale, Dark Matter and R-parity Violation

We present a simple theory where baryon and lepton numbers are spontaneously broken at the supersymmetry scale. In this context R-parity must be spontaneously broken but the theory still contains a stable field which can play the role of the cold dark matter of the Universe. We discuss the spectrum of the theory, the properties of the dark matter candidate and the predictions for direct detection experiments. This theory provides a concrete example of exotic supersymmetric signatures associated with having the simultaneous presence of R-parity violating and missing energy signals at the Large Hadron Collider.

Left-Right Symmetric Theory with Light Sterile Neutrinos

A simple theoretical framework for the spontaneous breaking of parity, baryon and lepton numbers is proposed. In this context, the baryon and lepton numbers are independent local gauge symmetries, while parity is defined making use of the left-right symmetry. We show that in the minimal model the new leptoquark fields needed to define an anomaly-free theory also generate neutrino masses through the type III seesaw mechanism. The spectrum of neutrinos and some phenomenological aspects are discussed. This theory predicts the possible existence of two light sterile neutrinos.

Supersymmetry at the LHC and The Theory of R-parity

We discuss the possible signatures at the Large Hadron Collider in models where R-parity is spontaneously broken. In the context of the minimal gauge theory for R-parity, we investigate signals with multileptons which can provide an unique test of this theory. The possible impact of these ideas for the search of supersymmetry at the Large Hadron Collider is discussed. We also discuss the constraints coming from cosmology due to the existence of two light sterile neutrinos in the theory.

On the Origin of R-parity Violation in Supersymmetry

The fate of R-parity in supersymmetric theories is discussed in detail. We make a strong case for R-parity violation showing that the simplest theories based on the local B-L symmetry predict the spontaneous breaking of R-parity at the SUSY scale. The possible implications for the searches at the Large Hadron Collider are discussed.

On the Higgs Mass and Perturbativity

The predictions for the Higgs mass in extensions of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model are discussed. We propose a simple theory where the Higgs mass is modified at tree-level and one can achieve a mass around 125 GeV without assuming heavy stops or large left-right mixing in the stop sector. All the parameters in the theory can be perturbative up to the grand unified scale, and one predicts the existence of new colored fields at the TeV scale. We refer to this model as Adjoint MSSM. We discuss the main phenomenological aspects of this scenario and the possible signatures at the Large Hadron Collider.

Gauge Theory for Baryon and Lepton Numbers with Leptoquarks

Models where the baryon (B) and lepton (L) numbers are local gauge symmetries that are spontaneously broken at a low scale are revisited. We find new extensions of the Standard Model which predict the existence of fermions that carry both baryon and lepton numbers (i.e., leptoquarks). The local baryonic and leptonic symmetries can be broken at a scale close to the electroweak scale and we do not need to postulate the existence of a large desert to satisfy the experimental constraints on baryon number violating processes like proton decay.

Baryon Asymmetry and Dark Matter Through the Vector-Like Portal

A possible connection between the cosmological baryon asymmetry, dark matter and vector-like fermions is investigated. In this scenario an asymmetry generated through baryogenesis or leptogenesis (in the vector-like matter sector) connects the baryon asymmetry to the dark matter density. We present explicit renormalizable models where this connection occurs. These models have asymmetric dark matter and a significant invisible Higgs decay width to dark matter particles is possible. We refer to this type of scenario as the vector-like portal. In some asymmetric dark matter models there are potential naturalness issues for the low energy effective theory. We address that issue in the models we consider by starting with a Lagrangian that is the most general renormalizable one consistent with the gauge (and discrete) symmetries and showing the low energy effective theory automatically has the required form as a consequence of the symmetries of the full theory. We show that the mass of the dark matter candidate is predicted in these scenarios.

The Higgs Mass via Type II Seesaw

We show that the simplest supersymmetric scenario where a large Higgs mass can be attained at tree-level for any ratio of the Higgs vacuum expectation values corresponds to the case where the neutrino masses are generated through the type II seesaw mechanism. This allows a standard model-like Higgs with mass around 125 GeV without assuming a heavy spectrum for the stops. We show that our results are consistent with the bounds coming from perturbativity up to the grand unified scale, discuss gauge coupling unification and possible signals at the Large Hadron Collider.

Supersymmetric Dark Matter Sectors

We investigate the properties of a dark matter sector where supersymmetry is a good symmetry. In this context we find that the stability of the dark matter candidate is possible even when R-parity is broken in the visible sector. In order to illustrate the idea we investigate a simple scenario where the dark matter candidate is the lightest scalar field in the dark sector which annihilates mainly into two sfermions when these channels are available. We study the relic density constraints and the predictions for the dark matter detection experiments.

Baryon and Lepton Numbers: Life in the Desert

The simplest theories where we can understand the origin of the baryon and lepton number violating interactions are discussed. We discuss the desert hypothesis in particle physics and the different scenarios where there is no need to assume it. It is shown that the minimal supersymmetric B-L theory predicts lepton number violation at the Large Hadron Collider if supersymmetry is realized at the low scale. We present the BLMSSM where both symmetries, B and L, can be spontaneously broken at the TeV scale.

The Theory of R-parity, Unification and SUSY at the LHC

The simplest gauge theories for the conservation of R-parity in supersymmetry are discussed. We show how the minimal theory based on the B-L gauge symmetry predicts that R-parity must be spontaneously broken at the TeV scale. The most striking signals of these theories at the Large Hadron Collider are discussed. We present a realistic theory where the local baryon and lepton numbers are spontaneously broken at the supersymmetry breaking scale. The possibility to understand the conservation of R-parity in grand unified theories defined in four dimensions is mentioned.

On Higgs Decays, Baryon Number Violation, and SUSY at the LHC

Baryon number violating interactions could modify the signatures of supersymmetric models at the Large Hadron Collider. In this article we investigate the predictions for the Higgs mass and the Higgs decays in a simple extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model where the local baryon and lepton numbers are spontaneously broken at the TeV scale. This theory predicts baryon number violation at the low scale which can change the current LHC bounds on the supersymmetric spectrum. Using the ATLAS and CMS bounds on the Higgs mass we show the constraints on the sfermion masses, and show the subsequent predictions for the radiative Higgs decays. We found that the Higgs decay into two photons is suppressed due to the existence of new light leptons. In this theory the stops can be very light in agreement with all experimental bounds and we make a brief discussion of the possible signals at the LHC.

The Minimal Theory for R-parity Violation at the LHC

We investigate the simplest gauge theory for spontaneous R-parity breaking and its testability at the LHC. This theory based on a local B-L gauge symmetry can be considered as the simplest framework for understanding the origin of the R-parity violating interactions, giving rise to potential lepton number violating signals and suppressed baryon number violating operators. The full spectrum of the theory and the constraints coming from neutrino masses are analyzed in great detail. We discuss the proton decay issue and the possible dark matter candidates. In order to assess the testability of the theory we study the properties of the new gauge boson, the neutralino decays and the main production channels for the charged sleptons at the LHC. We find that the channels with four charged leptons, three of them with the same sign, and four jets give us the most striking signals for the testability of lepton number violation at the LHC.

SUSY Spectrum and the Higgs Mass in the BLMSSM

The predictions for the mass of the light CP-even Higgs are investigated in the context of a simple extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model where the baryon and lepton numbers are local gauge symmetries. This theory predicts the existence of light charged and neutral leptons which give extra contributions to the Higgs mass at the one-loop level. We show the possibility to satisfy the LEP2 bound and achieve a Higgs mass around 125 GeV in a supersymmetric spectrum with light sfermions and small left-right mixing in the stop sector. We make a brief discussion of the unique leptonic signals at the Large Hadron Collider. This theory predicts baryon number violation at the low scale and one could avoid the current LHC bounds on the supersymmetric mass spectrum.
