Invariant bilinear differential operators

I classified bilinear differential operators acting in the spaces of tensor fields on any real or complex manifold and invariant with respect to the diffeomorphisms in 1980. Here I give the details of the proof.

Simple Vectorial Lie Algebras in Characteristic 2 and their Superizations

We overview the classifications of simple finite-dimensional modular Lie algebras. In characteristic 2, their list is wider than that in other characteristics; e.g., it contains desuperizations of modular analogs of complex simple vectorial Lie superalgebras. We consider odd parameters of deformations. For all 15 Weisfeiler gradings of the 5 exceptional families, and one Weisfeiler grading for each of 2 serial simple complex Lie superalgebras (with 2 exceptional subseries), we describe their characteristic-2 analogs - new simple Lie algebras. Descriptions of several of these analogs, and of their desuperizations, are far from obvious. One of the exceptional simple vectorial Lie algebras is a previously unknown deform (the result of a deformation) of the characteristic-2 version of the Lie algebra of divergence-free vector fields; this is a new simple Lie algebra with no analogs in characteristics distinct from 2. In characteristic 2, every simple Lie superalgebra can be obtained from a simple Lie algebra by one of the two methods described in arXiv:1407.1695. Most of the simple Lie superalgebras thus obtained from simple Lie algebras we describe here are new.

Derivations and Central Extensions of Symmetric Modular Lie Algebras and Superalgebras

Over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic, for simple Lie (super)algebras, and certain Lie (super)algebras close to simple ones, with symmetric root systems (such that for each root, there is minus it of the same multiplicity) and of ranks less than or equal to 8 - most needed in an approach to the classification of simple vectorial Lie superalgebras (i.e., Lie superalgebras realized by means of vector fields on a supermanifold), - we list the outer derivations and nontrivial central extensions. When the conjectural answer is clear for the infinite series, it is given for any rank. We also list the outer derivations and nontrivial central extensions of one series of non-symmetric (except when considered in characteristic 2), namely periplectic, Lie superalgebras - the one that preserves the nondegenerate symmetric odd bilinear form, and of the Lie algebras obtained from them by desuperization. We also list the outer derivations and nontrivial central extensions of an analog of the rank 2 exceptional Lie algebra discovered by Shen Guangyu. Several results indigenous to positive characteristic are of particular interest being unlike known theorems for characteristic 0, some results are, moreover, counterintuitive.

Simple prolongs of the non-positive parts of graded Lie algebras with Cartan matrix in characteristic 2

Over an algebraically closed fields, an alternative to the method due to Kostrikin and Shafarevich was recently suggested. It produces all known simple finite dimensional Lie algebras in characteristic p>2. For p=2, we investigate one of the steps of this method, interpret several other simple Lie algebras, previously known only as sums of their components, as Lie algebras of vector fields. One new series of exceptional simple Lie algebras is discovered, together with its "hidden supersymmetries". In characteristic 2, certain simple Lie algebras are "desuperizations" of simple Lie superalgebras. Several simple Lie algebras we describe as results of generalized Cartan prolongation of the non-positive parts, relative a simplest (by declaring degree of just one pair of root vectors corresponding to opposite simple roots nonzero) grading by integers, of Lie algebras with Cartan matrix are "desuperizations" of characteristic 2 versions of complex simple exceptional vectorial Lie superalgebras. We list the Lie superalgebras (some of them new) obtained from the Lie algebras considered by declaring certain generators odd. One of the simple Lie algebras obtained is the prolong relative to a non-simplest grading, so the classification to be obtained might be more involved than we previously thought.

Minkowski superspaces and superstrings as almost real-complex supermanifolds

In 1996/7, J. Bernstein observed that smooth or analytic supermanifolds that mathematicians study are real or (almost) complex ones, while Minkowski superspaces are completely different objects. They are what we call almost real-complex supermanifolds, i.e., real supermanifolds with a non-integrable distribution, the collection of subspaces of the tangent space, and in every subspace a complex structure is given. An almost complex structure on a real supermanifold can be given by an even or odd operator; it is complex (without "always") if the suitable superization of the Nijenhuis tensor vanishes. On almost real-complex supermanifolds, we define the circumcised analog of the Nijenhuis tensor. We compute it for the Minkowski superspaces and superstrings. The space of values of the circumcised Nijenhuis tensor splits into (indecomposable, generally) components whose irreducible constituents are similar to those of Riemann or Penrose tensors. The Nijenhuis tensor vanishes identically only on superstrings of superdimension 1|1 and, besides, the superstring is endowed with a contact structure. We also prove that all real forms of complex Grassmann algebras are isomorphic although singled out by manifestly different anti-involutions.

Divided power (co)homology. Presentations of simple finite dimensional modular Lie superalgebras with Cartan matrix

For modular Lie superalgebras, new notions are introduced: Divided power homology and divided power cohomology. For illustration, we give presentations (in terms of analogs of Chevalley generators) of finite dimensional Lie (super)algebras with indecomposable Cartan matrix in characteristic 2 (and in other characteristics for completeness of the picture). We correct the currently available in the literature notions of Chevalley generators and Cartan matrix in the modular and super cases, and an auxiliary notion of the Dynkin diagram. In characteristic 2, the defining relations of simple classical Lie algebras of the A, D, E types are not only Serre ones; these non-Serre relations are same for Lie superalgebras with the same Cartan matrix and any distribution of parities of the generators. Presentations of simple orthogonal Lie algebras having no Cartan matrix are also given..

Classification of Finite Dimensional Modular Lie Superalgebras with Indecomposable Cartan Matrix

Finite dimensional modular Lie superalgebras over algebraically closed fields with indecomposable Cartan matrices are classified under some technical, most probably inessential, hypotheses. If the Cartan matrix is invertible, the corresponding Lie superalgebra is simple otherwise the quotient of the derived Lie superalgebra modulo center is simple (if its rank is greater than 1). Eleven new exceptional simple modular Lie superalgebras are discovered. Several features of classic notions, or notions themselves, are clarified or introduced, e.g., Cartan matrix, several versions of restrictedness in characteristic 2, Dynkin diagram, Chevalley generators, and even the notion of Lie superalgebra if the characteristic is equal to 2. Interesting phenomena in characteristic 2: (1) all simple Lie superalgebras with Cartan matrix are obtained from simple Lie algebras with Cartan matrix by declaring several (any) of its Chevalley generators odd; (2) there exist simple Lie superalgebras whose even parts are solvable. The Lie superalgebras of fixed points of automorphisms corresponding to the symmetries of Dynkin diagrams are also listed and their simple subquotients described.

Deformations of Symmetric Simple Modular Lie (Super)Algebras

We say that a Lie (super)algebra is ''symmetric'' if with every root (with respect to the maximal torus) it has the opposite root of the same multiplicity. Over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristics (up to 7 or 11, enough to formulate a general conjecture), we computed the cohomology corresponding to the infinitesimal deformations of all known simple finite-dimensional symmetric Lie (super)algebras of rank $<9$, except for superizations of the Lie algebras with ADE root systems, and queerified Lie algebras, considered only partly. The moduli of deformations of any Lie superalgebra constitute a supervariety. Any infinitesimal deformation given by any odd cocycleis integrable. All deformations corresponding to odd cocycles are new. Among new results are classifications of the cocycles describing deforms (results of deformations) of the 29-dimensional Brown algebra in characteristic 3, of Weisfeiler-Kac algebras and orthogonal Lie algebras without Cartan matrix in characteristic 2. Open problems: describe non-isomorphic deforms and equivalence classes of cohomology theories. Appendix: For several modular analogs of complex simple Lie algebras, and simple Lie algebras indigenous to characteristics 3 and 2, we describe the space of cohomology with trivial coefficients. We show that the natural multiplication in this space is very complicated.

New simple modular Lie superalgebras as generalized prolongs

Over algebraically closed fields of characteristic p>2, prolongations of the simple finite dimensional Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras with Cartan matrix are studied for certain simplest gradings of these algebras. Several new simple Lie superalgebras are discovered, serial and exceptional, including superBrown and superMelikyan superalgebras. Simple Lie superalgebras with Cartan matrix of rank 2 are classified.

Cartan matrices and presentations of Cunha and Elduque superalgebras

All inequivalent Cartan matrices (in other words, inequivalent systems of simple roots) of the ten simple exceptional finite dimensional Lie superalgebras in characteristic 3, recently identified by Cunha and Elduque as constituents of Elduque's superization of the Freudenthal Magic Square, are listed together with defining relations between analogs of their Chevalley generators.

Cartan matrices and presentations of the exceptional simple Elduque Lie superalgebra

Recently Alberto Elduque listed all simple and graded modulo 2 finite dimensional Lie algebras and superalgebras whose odd component is the spinor representation of the orthogonal Lie algebra equal to the even component, and discovered one exceptional such Lie superalgebra in characteristic 5. For this Lie superalgebra all inequivalent Cartan matrices (in other words, inequivalent systems of simple roots) are listed together with defining relations between analogs of its Chevalley generators.

Defining relations associated with the principal sl(2)-subalgebras of simple Lie algebras

The notion of defining relations is well-defined for any nilpotent Lie algebra. Therefore a conventional way to present a simple Lie algebra G is by splitting it into the direct sum of a commutative Cartan subalgebra and two maximal nilpotent subalgebras (positive and negative) and together the generators of both these nilpotent subalgebras together generate G. Though there are many relations between these generators, they are neat (Serre relations). It is possible to determine the relations for generators of different type, e.g, with the principal embeddings of sl(2) into G one can associate only TWO elements that generate G. We explicitly describe the corresponding presentations of simple Lie algebras, for all finite dimensional and certain infinite dimensional ones; namely, for the Lie algebra "of matrices of a complex size" realized as a subalgebra of the Lie algebra of differential operators in 1 indeterminate. The relations obtained are rather simple. Our results might be of interest in applications to integrable systems (like vector-valued Liouville (or Leznov-Saveliev, or 2-dimensional Toda) equations and KdV-type equations). They also indicate how to q-quantize the Lie algebra of matrices of complex size.

The analogs of the Riemann tensor for exceptional structures on supermanifolds

H. Hertz called any manifold M with a given nonintegrable distribution {\it nonholonomic}. Vershik and Gershkovich stated and R. Montgomery proved that the space of germs of any nonholonomic distribution on M with an open and dense orbit of the diffeomorphism group is either (1) of codimension one or (2) an Engel distribution. No analog of this statement for supermanifolds is formulated yet, we only have some examples: our list (an analog of E.Cartan's classification) of simple Lie superalgebras of vector fields with polynomial coefficients and a particular (Weisfeiler) grading contains 16 series similar to contact ones and 11 exceptional algebras preserving nonholonomic structures. Here we compute the cohomology corresponding to the analog of the Riemann tensor for the SUPERmanifolds corresponding to the 15 exceptional simple vectorial Lie superalgebras, 11 of which are nonholonomic. The cohomology for analogs of the Riemann tensor for the manifolds with an exceptional Engel manifolds are computed in math.RT/0202213.

Lie superalgebra structures in H*(g; g)

On a given manifold M, the Nijenhuis bracket makes the superspace of vector-valued differential forms into a Lie superalgebra that can be interpreted as the centralizer of the exterior differential considered as a vector field on the supermanifold associated with the de Rham bundle on M. A similar bracket introduces structures of DG Lie superalgebra in the superspaces of cochains and cohomology with coefficients in the adjoint module for any Lie superalgebra. We use a Mathematica--based package SuperLie (already proven useful in various problems) to explicitly describe these Lie superalgebras for some simple finite dimensional Lie superalgebras and their ``relatives'' (the nontrivial central extensions or derivation algebras of the considered simple ones).

The nonholonomic Riemann and Weyl tensors for flag manifolds

On any manifold, any non-degenerate symmetric 2-form (metric) and any skew-symmetric (differential) form W can be reduced to a canonical form at any point, but not in any neighborhood: the respective obstructions being the Riemannian tensor and dW. The obstructions to flatness (to reducibility to a canonical form) are well-known for any G-structure, not only for Riemannian or symplectic structures. For the manifold with a nonholonomic structure (nonintegrable distribution), the general notions of flatness and obstructions to it, though of huge interest (e.g., in supergravity) were not known until recently, though particular cases were known for more than a century (e.g., any contact structure is ``flat'': it can always be reduced, locally, to a canonical form). We give a general definition of the NONHOLONOMIC analogs of the Riemann and Weyl tensors. With the help of Premet's theorems and a package SuperLie we calculate these tensors for the particular case of flag varieties associated with each maximal (and several other) parabolic subalgebra of each simple Lie algebra. We also compute obstructions to flatness of the G(2)-structure and its nonholonomic super counterpart.

Structures of G(2) type and nonintegrable distributions in characteristic p

Lately we observe: (1) an upsurge of interest (in particular, triggered by a paper by Atiyah and Witten) to manifolds with G(2)-type structure; (2) classifications are obtained of simple (finite dimensional and graded vectorial) Lie superalgebras over fields of complex and real numbers and of simple finite dimensional Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of characteristic p>3; (3) importance of nonintegrable distributions in (1) -- (2). We add to interrelation of (1)--(3) an explicit description of several exceptional simple Lie algebras for p=2, 3 (Melikyan algebras; Brown, Ermolaev, Frank, and Skryabin algebras) as subalgebras of Lie algebras of vector fields preserving nonintegrable distributions analogous to (or identical with) those preserved by G(2), O(7), Sp(4) and Sp(10). The description is performed in terms of Cartan-Tanaka-Shchepochkina prolongs and is similar to descriptions of simple Lie superalgebras of vector fields with polynomial coefficients. Our results illustrate usefulness of Shchepochkina's algorithm and SuperLie package; two families of simple Lie algebras found in the process might be new.

Invariant operators on supermanifolds and Standard Models

Here we continue to list the differential operators invariant with respect to the 15 exceptional simple Lie superalgebras of polynomial vector fields. A part of the list (for operators acting on tensors with finite dimensional fibers) was earlier obtained in 2 of the 15 cases by Kochetkov and in one more instance by Kac and Rudakov. Broadhurst and Kac conjectured that some of these structures pertain to the Standard Models of elementary particles and the Grand Unified Theories. So, GUT, if any exists, will be formulated in terms of operators we found, or their r-nary analogs to be found. Calculations are performed with the aid of Grozman's Mathematica-based SuperLie package. When degeneracy conditions are violated (absence of singular vectors) the corresponding module of tensor fields is irreducible. We consider generalized tensors corresponding to fibers of countable infinite dimension, not only finite dimensional ones. We also verified some of the earlier findings.
