Harmonic in-painting of CMB sky by constrained Gaussian realization

The presence of astrophysical emissions between the last scattering surface and our vantage point requires us to apply a foreground mask on CMB sky map, leading to large cut around the Galactic equator and numerous holes. Since many CMB analyses, including non-Gaussianity study may be performed on a whole sky map in a more straightforward and reliable manner, it is of utmost importance to develop an efficient method to in-paint the CMB sky map, while still preserving statistical properties. In this letter, we consider Monte-Carlo simulation of constrained Gaussian field and derive it for CMB anisotropy in harmonic space, where a feasible implementation is possible with good approximation. We applied our method to the simulated data, which confirms the masked area is in-painted in a way compliant with the expected statistical properties. Subsequently, we applied our method to the WMAP foreground-reduced maps and investigated the anomalous alignment between quadrupole and octupole components. From our investigation, we find the alignment in the foreground-reduced maps is even higher than the ILC map. In particular, we find the highest alignment in the V band map, which has less foreground contamination than other bands. Therefore, we find it hard to attribute the alignment to residual foregrounds. Our method will be complementary to other efforts on in-painting or reconstructing the masked CMB data, and of great use to Planck surveyor and future missions.

Symmetry and anti-symmetry of the CMB anisotropy pattern

Given an arbitrary function, we may construct symmetric and antisymmetric functions under a certain operation. Since statistical isotropy and homogeneity of our Universe has been a fundamental assumption of modern cosmology, we do not expect any particular symmetry or antisymmetry in our Universe. Besides fundamental properties of our Universe, we may also figure our contamination and improve the quality of the CMB data products, by matching the unusual symmetries and antisymmetries of the CMB data with known contaminantions. Noting this, we have investigated the symmetry and antisymmetry of CMB anisotropy pattern, which provides the deepest survey. If we let the operation to be a coordinate inversion, the symmetric and antisymmetric functions have even and odd-parity respectively. The investigation on the parity of the recent CMB data shows a large-scale odd-parity preference, which is very unlikely in the statistical isotropic and homogeneous Universe. We have investigated the association of the WMAP systematics with the anomaly, but not found a definite non-cosmological cause. Additionally, we have investigated the phase of even and odd multipole data respectively, and found the behavior distinct from each other. Noting the odd-parity preference anomaly, we have fitted a cosmological model respectively to even and odd multipole data, and found significant parametric tension. Besides anomalies explicitly associated with parity, there are anomalous lack of large-scale correlation in CMB data. Noting the equivalence between the power spectrum and the correlation, we have investigated the association between the lack of large-angle correlation and the odd-parity preference of the angular power spectrum. From our analysis, we find that the odd-parity preference at low multipoles is, in fact, phenomenologically identical with the lack of large-angle correlation.

CMB E/B decomposition of incomplete sky: a pixel space approach

CMB polarization signal may be decomposed into gradient-like (E) and curl-like (B) mode. We have investigated E/B decomposition in pixel space. We find E/B mixing due to incomplete sky is localized in pixel-space, and negligible in the regions far away from the masked area. By estimating the expected local leakage power, we have diagnosed ambiguous pixels. Our criteria for ambiguous pixels (i.e. r_c) is associated with the tensor-to-scalar ratio of B mode power spectrum, which the leakage power is comparable to. By setting r_c to a lower value, we may reduce leakage level, but reduce sky fraction at the same time. Therefore, we have solved \partial ΔC_l/\partial r_c=0, and obtained the optimal r_c, which minimizes the estimation uncertainty, given a foreground mask and noise level. We have applied our method to a simulated map blocked by a foreground (diffuse + point source) mask. Our simulation shows leakage power is smaller than primordial (i.e. unlensed) B mode power spectrum of tensor-to-scalar ratio r\sim 10^{-3} at wide range of multipoles (50\lesssim l \lesssim 2000), while allowing us to retain sky fraction ~ 0.48.

Lack of angular correlation and odd-parity preference in CMB data

We have investigated the angular correlation in the recent CMB data. In addition to the known large-angle correlation anomaly, we find the lack of correlation at small angles with high statistical significance. We have investigated various non-cosmological contamination and additionally WMAP team's simulated data. However, we have not found a definite cause. In the angular power spectrum of WMAP data, there exist anomalous odd-parity preference at low multipoles. Noting the equivalence between the power spectrum and the correlation, we have investigated the association between the lack of large-angle correlation and the odd-parity preference. From our investigation, we find that the odd-parity preference at low multipoles is, in fact, a phenomenological origin of the lack of large-angle correlation. Futher investigation is required to find out whether the origin of the anomaly is cosmological or due to unaccounted systematics. The data from Planck surveyor, which has systematics distinct from the WMAP, will greatly help us to resolve its origin.

Parametric tension between even and odd multipole data of WMAP power spectrum: unaccounted contamination or missing parameters?

There exist power contrast in even and odd multipoles of WMAP power spectrum at low and intermediate multipole range. This anomaly is explicitly associated with the angular power spectrum, which are heavily used for cosmological model fitting. Having noted this, we have investigated whether even(odd) multipole data set is consistent with the WMAP concordance model. Our investigation shows WMAP concordance model does not make a good fit for even(odd) multipole data set, and there exist tension between two data subsets. Noting tension is highest in primordial power spectrum parameters, we have additionally considered a running spectral index, but find tension increases to even a higher level. We believe these parametric tensions may be indications of unaccounted contamination or imperfection of the model.

Anomalous parity asymmetry of WMAP power spectrum data at low multpoles: is it cosmological or systematics?

We have investigated the odd-parity preference of the WMAP 7 year power spectrum. Comparison with simulation shows the odd-parity preference of WMAP data (2<= l <=22) is anomalous at 4-in-1000 level. We have investigated its origins, and ruled out some of non-cosmological origins such as asymmetric beams, noise and cut-sky effect. We also find primordial origin requires |Re[Φ(\mathbf k)]|\ll|Im[Φ(\mathbf k)]| for k\lesssim 22/η_0, where η_0 is the present conformal time. Multipoles associated with the odd-parity preference happen to coincide with some of other CMB anomalies. Therefore, there may exist a common origin, whether cosmological or not. Besides, we find it likely that low quadrupole power is the part of this odd-parity preference anomaly rather than an isolated one. The Planck surveyor, which possesses wide frequency coverage and systematics distinct from the WMAP, may allow us to resolve the mystery of the anomalous odd-parity preference.

CMB data constraint on self-annihilation of dark matter particles

Recently, self-annihilation of dark matter particles is proposed to explain the "WMAP Haze" and excess of energetic positrons and electrons in ATIC and PAMELA results. If self-annihilation of dark matter occurs around the recombination of cosmic plasma, energy release from self-annihilation of dark matter delays the recombination, and hence affects CMB anisotropy. By using the recent CMB data, we have investigated the self-annihilation of dark matter particles. In this investigation, we do not find statistically significant evidence, and impose an upper bound on / m_chi. The upcoming data from Planck surveyor and the Fermi Gamma-ray telescope will allow us to break some of parameter degeneracy and improve constraints on self-annihilation of dark matter particles.

Anomalous parity asymmetry of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe power spectrum data at low multipoles

We have investigated non-Gaussianity of our early Universe by comparing the parity asymmetry of the WMAP power spectrum with simulations. We find that odd-parity preference of the WMAP data (2<= l <=18) is anomalous at 4-in-1000 level. We find it likely that low quadrupole power is part of this parity asymmetry rather than an isolated anomaly. Futher investigation is required to find out whether the origin of this anomaly is cosmological or systematic effect. The data from Planck surveyor, which has systematics distinct from the WMAP, will help us to resolve the origin of the anomalous odd-parity preference.

Cosmological Alfvén waves in the recent CMB data, and the observational bound on the primordial vector perturbation

In the presence of the primordial magnetic field, initial vector (vorticity) perturbations produce cosmological Alfven waves and leave imprints on cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropy. We have investigated imprints of cosmological Alfven waves in CMB anisotropy. For data constraints, we have used the power spectrum of the recent CMB observations, and correlations estimated from WMAP Internal Linear Combination (ILC) maps. Our analysis shows 3 sigma evidence of cosmological Alfven waves. Using the 3 sigma limit from our analysis and the Alfven velocity limit from the total energy density constraint, we impose a lower bound on the amplitude of primordial vector perturbation: 4*10^-12 at k_0=0.002/Mpc.

The primordial "f_NL" non-Gaussianity, and perturbations beyond the present horizon

We show a primordial non-linear "f_NL" term may produce unphysically large CMB anisotropy for a red-tilted primordial power spectrum (n<1), because of coupling to primordial fluctuation on the largest scale. We consider a primordial power spectrum models of a running spectral index, and a transition at very low wavenumbers. We find that only negative running spectral index models are allowed, provided that there is no transition at a low wavenumbers (i.e. k<<1). For models of a constant spectral index, we find log(k_c/k_0)> -184, at 1 sigma level, on the transition scale of sharp cut-off models, using recent CMB and SDSS data.

The Accelerated Recombination, and the ACBAR and WMAP data

We have investigated the deviation from the standard recombination process, using the ACBAR 2008 and the WMAP 3 year data. In this investigation, we have considered the possibility of the accelerated recombination as well as the delayed recombination. We find that the accelerated recombination is as likely as the delayed recombination, and there is some degeneracy between $ε_α$ and \{$n_s$, $\log[10^{10}A_s]$, $H_0$\}.

CMB polarization map derived from the WMAP 5 year data through Harmonic Internal Linear Combination

We have derived whole-sky CMB polarization maps from the WMAP 5 year polarization data, using the Harmonic Internal Linear Combination (HILC) method. Our HILC method incorporates spatial variability of linear weights in a natural way and yields continuous linear weights over the entire sky. To estimate the power spectrum of HILC maps, we have derived a unbiased quadratic estimator, which is similar to the WMAP team's cross power estimator, but in a more convenient form for HILC maps. From our CMB polarization map, we have obtained TE correlation and E mode power spectra without applying any mask. They are similar to the WMAP team's estimation and consistent with the WMAP best-fit $Λ$CDM model. Foreground reduction by HILC method is more effective for high resolution and low noise data. Hence, our HILC method will enable effective foreground reduction in polarization data from the Planck surveyor.

Probing the last scattering surface through the recent and future CMB observations

We have constrained the extended (delayed and accelerated) models of hydrogen recombination, by investigating associated changes of the position and the width of the last scattering surface. Using the recent CMB and SDSS data, we find that the recent data constraints favor the accelerated recombination model, though the other models (standard, delayed recombination) are not ruled out at 1-$σ$ confidence level. If the accelerated recombination had actually occurred in our early Universe, baryonic clustering on small-scales is likely to be the cause of it. By comparing the ionization history of baryonic cloud models with that of the best-fit accelerated recombination model, we find that some portion of our early Universe has baryonic underdensity. We have made the forecast on the PLANCK data constraint, which shows that we will be able to rule out the standard or delayed recombination models, if the recombination in our early Universe had proceeded with $ε_α\sim-0.01$ or lower, and residual foregrounds and systematic effects are negligible.

Fast simulation of the whole-sky CMB map in the presence of primordial magnetic field

We present a novel method for generation of sets of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy maps, which reproduces the $Δł=2$ correlations associated with Alfvén turbulence. The method is based on the non-linear transformation of the CMB maps, which is obtained from the Monte Carlo simulation of the statistically isotropic Gaussian signal. Our method is computationally fast and efficient. We have applied two estimators (the cross-correlation estimator in multipole domain for $ł+1,m$ and $ł-1,m$ modes and circular phase moments) to test the statistical properties of derived maps. Both of these statistics confirm the effectiveness of our generation method. We believe that our method can be useful for fast generation of the non-Gaussian maps in the presence of the primordial magnetic field, and be a valuable tool for the non-Gaussianity investigation of the CMB in the framework of the future PLANCK data analysis.

CMB map derived from the WMAP data through Harmonic Internal Linear Combination

We are presenting an Internal Linear Combination (ILC) CMB map, in which the foreground is reduced through harmonic variance minimization. We have derived our method by converting a general form of pixel-space approach into spherical harmonic space, maintaining full correspondence. By working in spherical harmonic space, spatial variability of linear weights is incorporated in a self-contained manner and our linear weights are continuous functions of position over the entire sky. The full correspondence to pixel-space approach enables straightforward physical interpretation on our approach. In variance minimization of a linear combination map, the existence of a cross term between residual foregrounds and CMB makes the linear combination of minimum variance differ from that of minimum foreground. We have developed an iterative foreground reduction method, where perturbative correction is made for the cross term. Our CMB map derived from the WMAP data is in better agreement with the WMAP best-fit $Λ$CDM model than the WMAP team's Internal Linear Combination map. We find that our method's capacity to clean foreground is limited by the availability of enough spherical harmonic coefficients of good Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR).

Statistics of phase correlations as a test for non-Gaussianity of the CMB maps

Gaussianity is the very base for derivation of the cosmological parameters from the CMB angular power spectrum. Non-Gaussian signal, whether originated from experimental error or primordial source, could mimic extra power in the power spectrum, thereby leading to a wrong set of parameters. In this paper we present a new Gaussianity analysis of the derived CMB singals. It is based on the trigonometric moments of phases, which can be concluded with a ``mean angle'', allowing us to see the global trend of non-Gaussianity of the signals. These moments are also closely related to the Pearson's random walks. We apply these analyses on the derived CMB maps and their different morphologies manifest themselves through these functions. We also comment on rotational invariance of the trigonometric moments of phases as a non-Gaussianity test.

On the linear filters for point source extraction of the Planck mission

The manifestation of point sources in the upcoming PLANCK maps is a direct reflection of the properties of the pixelized antenna beam shape for each frequency, which is related to the scan strategy, pointing accuracy, noise properties and map-making algorithm. In this paper we firstly compare analytically two filters for the PLANCK point source extraction, namely, the adaptive top-hat filter (ATHF), the theoretically-optimal filter (TOF). Our analyses are based on the premise that the experiment parameters the TOF assume and require are already known: the CMB and noise power spectrum and a circular Gaussian beam shape and size, whereas the ATHF does not need any a priori knowledge. The analyses show that the TOF is optimal in terms of the gain after the parameter inputs. We simulate the PLANCK HFI 100 GHz channel with elliptical beam in rotation to test the efficiency of the TOF and the ATHF. We also apply the ATHF on the WMAP Q-band map and the derived map (the foreground-cleaned map by Tegmark, de Oliveira Costa & Hamilton) from the WMAP 1-year data. The uncertainties on the angular power spectrum will hamper the efficiency of the TOF. To tackle the real situations for the PLANCK point source extraction, most importantly, the elliptical beam shape with slow precession and change of the ellipticity ratio due to possible mirror degradation effect, the ATHF is computationally efficient and well suited for the construction of the PLANCK Early Release Compact Source Catalogue.

Late reionizations of the Universe and their manifestation in the CMB data

We investigate two sets of two-epoched reionization models and their manifestation in the CMB anisotropy and polarization data of the recent WMAP project and make some predictions for the future PLANCK missions. In the first set of models, the universe was reionized twice, first at z~15 by population III stars and then at z~6 by stars in large galaxies. In the second set of models, the extra peak-like reionization at high redshifts z > 100 is induced by the decay of unstable particles, followed by the standard picture of reionization at z~6. We examine the general properties of these two-epoched reionization models and their implication in the WMAP CMB temperature anisotropy-polarization cross-correlation. We have shown that these models have comparable likelihood values for the WMAP data and distinct characters which can be tested with the Planck high sensitivities.
