From Multipartite Entanglement to TQFT

At long distances, a gapped phase of matter is described by a topological quantum field theory (TQFT). We conjecture a tight and concrete relationship between the genuine $(d+1)$-partite entanglement -- labelled by a $d$-dimensional manifold $M$ -- in the ground state of a $(d-1)+1$-dimensional gapped theory and the partition function of the low energy TQFT on $M$. Under certain assumptions, the conjecture implies that for $d=3$, the ground state wavefunction can determine the modular tensor category description of the low energy TQFT. We verify our conjecture for general (2+1)-dimensional Levin-Wen string-net models.

On the monodromy of KZ-connections with irregular singularities

We study Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (KZ) connection in the presence of irregular singularities, that is, poles of higher order. We consider both the case of a universal connection and the case when it is associated with a specific simple Lie algebra, such as $\mathfrak{su}(2)$. We give some general results about the monodromies of such flat connections in the configuration spaces of points, and provide explicit examples of topological invariants of links (more generally, tangles) realized by the monodromy.

On Quantum Modularity for Geometric 3-Manifolds

The quantum modularity conjecture, first introduced by Don Zagier, is a general statement about a relation between $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ quantum invariants of links and 3-manifolds at roots of unity related by a modular transformation. In this note we formulate a strong version of the conjecture for Witten--Reshetikhin--Turaev invariants of closed geometric, not necessarily hyperbolic, 3-manifolds. This version in particular involves a geometrically distinguished $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ flat connection (a generalization of the standard hyperbolic flat connection to other Thurston geometries) and has a statement about the integrality of coefficients appearing in the modular transformation formula. We prove that the conjecture holds for Brieskorn homology spheres and some other examples. We also comment on how the conjecture relates to a formal realization of the $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ quantum invariant at a general root of unity as a path integral in analytically continued $SU(2)$ Chern--Simons theory with a rational level.

On the action of non-invertible symmetries on local operators in 3+1d

Most of the known non-invertible symmetries of quantum field theories in three and four spacetime dimensions act invertibly on local operators. An exception is coset symmetries, which can be constructed from gauging a non-normal subgroup of an invertible symmetry. In this paper, we study the action of a general finite non-invertible symmetry on local operators in four dimensions. We show that non-invertible symmetries without topological line operators necessarily act invertibly on local operators. Using this result, we argue that the action of a general non-invertible symmetry in 3+1d on local operators can be decomposed into the invertible action of some operators composed with the action of a gauging interface. We use this result to study when such a symmetry is anomaly-free. We find a necessary condition for a finite non-invertible symmetry in 3+1d to be anomaly-free, and show that anomaly-free non-invertible symmetries without topological line operators are non-intrinsically non-invertible.

Approximating $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ Chern-Simons theory by finite group gauge theories

Motivated by some previously known facts from mathematical and physics literature, we explore certain relations between 3-dimensional topological gauge theories with continuous and finite gauge groups, commonly known as Chern-Simons (CS) and Dijkgraaf-Witten (DW) theories, respectively. Specifically, we consider the continuous and finite gauge groups to be the same algebraic group over the complex numbers and a finite field, respectively. In this paper, we focus on the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ example and consider the relationship on the level of the corresponding partition functions on closed 3-manifolds. Mathematically, these are Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev and DW invariants. We find that the asymptotics of the DW theory when the number of elements of the finite field is large recovers the leading asymptotics of the CS theory at large level when the 3-manifold contains no hyperbolic components. As a byproduct, we develop efficient techniques to count the number of points over finite fields $\mathbb{F}_q$ of $\mathrm{SL}(2)$ representation varieties of fundamental groups of 3-manifolds, possibly with weights pulled back from a chosen class in $H^3(\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{F}_q),\mathrm{U}(1))$.

Summing over homology groups of 3-manifolds

We consider a toy model of a 3-dimensional topological quantum gravity. In this model, a contribution of a given 3-manifold is given by the partition function of an abelian Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT), with a topological boundary condition at the boundary. Using the fact that the TQFT partition function depends only on the first homology group of the 3-manifold with some additional structure, the sum over all 3-manifolds with fixed boundary can be rewritten as a sum over finitely generated abelian groups (and the extra structure). We present bounds on the universal weights in the sum, that is, the measure on the set of isomorphism classes of finitely generated abelian groups (with the extra structure) sufficient for the sum to be convergent. Moreover, with further assumptions on the measure, we argue the existence of a distribution of 2d TQFTs, such that the sum is equal to the ensemble average of their partition functions evaluated on the boundary. For a certain kind of measure, the sum over the abelian groups can be factorized into sums over abelian $p$-groups, and the analysis can be performed independently for each prime $p$.

Braidings on topological operators, anomaly of higher-form symmetries and the SymTFT

The anomaly of non-invertible higher-form symmetries is determined by the braiding of topological operators implementing them. In this paper, we study a method to classify braidings on topological line and surface operators by leveraging the fact that topological operators which admit a braiding are symmetries of their associated SymTFT. This perspective allows us to formulate an algorithm to explicitly compute all possible braidings on a given fusion category, bypassing the need to solve the hexagon equations. Additionally, using 3+1d SymTFTs, we determine braidings on various fusion 2-categories. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the fusion 2-categories $Σ\mathcal{C}$, 2Vec$_G^π$ and Tambara-Yamagami (TY) 2-categories TY$(A,π)$ to admit a braiding.

Non-anomalous non-invertible symmetries in 1+1D from gapped boundaries of SymTFTs

We study the anomalies of non-invertible symmetries in 1+1D QFTs using gapped boundaries of its SymTFT. We establish the explicit relation between Lagrangian algebras which determine gapped boundaries of the SymTFT, and algebras which determine non-anomalous/gaugeable topological line operators in the 1+1D QFT. If the Lagrangian algebras in the SymTFT are known, this provides a method to compute algebras in all fusion categories that share the same SymTFT. We find necessary conditions that a line operator in the SymTFT must satisfy for the corresponding line operator in the 1+1D QFT to be non-anomalous. We use this constraint to show that a non-invertible symmetry admits a 1+1D trivially gapped phase if and only if the SymTFT admits a magnetic Lagrangian algebra. We define a process of transporting non-anomalous line operators between fusion categories which share the same SymTFT and apply this method to the three Haagerup fusion categories.

On categorification of Stokes coefficients in Chern-Simons theory

We consider a finite-dimensional oscillatory integral which provides a "finite-dimensional model" for analytically continued $SU(2)$ Chern-Simons theory on closed 3-manifolds that are described by plumbing trees. This model allows an efficient description of Stokes phenomenon for perturbative expansions in Chern-Simons theory around classical solutions - $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ flat connections. Moreover, the Stokes coefficients can be categorified, i.e. promoted to graded vector spaces, in terms of this finite-dimensional model. At least naively, the categorification gives BPS spectrum of 5d maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on the 3-manifold times a line with appropriate boundary conditions. We also comment on necessity of taking into account "flat connections at infinity" to capture Stokes phenomenon for certain 3-manifolds.

On finite group global and gauged $q$-form symmetries in TQFT

We describe a method to implement finite group global and gauged $q$-form symmetries into the axiomatic structure of $d$-dimensional Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT) in terms of bordisms decorated by cohomology classes. Namely, on a manifold with a boundary, the gauge field is considered as a class in an appropriate relative cohomology group. It is defined in a way that allows self-consistent cutting and gluing of the manifolds and involves a choice of a $(d-q-2)$-skeleton in the boundary. The method, in a sense, generalizes to arbitrary $d$ and $q$ a method that has been considered in the literature in the case of $d=3,\;q=0,1$.

Categorical Symmetry of the Standard Model from Gravitational Anomaly

In the Standard Model, some combination of the baryon $\bf B$ and lepton $\bf L$ number symmetry is free of mixed anomalies with strong and electroweak $su(3) \times su(2) \times u(1)_{\tilde Y}$ gauge forces. However, it can still suffer from a mixed gravitational anomaly, hypothetically pertinent to leptogenesis in the very early universe. This happens when the total "sterile right-handed" neutrino number $n_{ν_R}$ is not equal to the family number $N_f$. Thus the invertible $\bf B - L$ symmetry current conservation can be violated quantum mechanically by gravitational backgrounds such as gravitational instantons. In specific, we show that a noninvertible categorical $\bf B - L$ generalized symmetry still survives in gravitational backgrounds. In general, we propose a construction of noninvertible symmetry charge operators as topological defects derived from invertible anomalous symmetries that suffer from mixed gravitational anomalies. Examples include the perturbative local and nonperturbative global anomalies classified by $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ respectively. For this construction, we utilize the anomaly inflow bulk-boundary correspondence, the 4d Pontryagin class and the gravitational Chern-Simons 3-form, the 3d Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev-type topological quantum field theory corresponding to a 2d rational conformal field theory with an appropriate rational chiral central charge, and the 4d $\mathbb{Z}_4^{\rm TF}$-time-reversal symmetric topological superconductor with 3d boundary topological order.

Graph Neural Networks and 3-Dimensional Topology

We test the efficiency of applying Geometric Deep Learning to the problems in low-dimensional topology in a certain simple setting. Specifically, we consider the class of 3-manifolds described by plumbing graphs and use Graph Neural Networks (GNN) for the problem of deciding whether a pair of graphs give homeomorphic 3-manifolds. We use supervised learning to train a GNN that provides the answer to such a question with high accuracy. Moreover, we consider reinforcement learning by a GNN to find a sequence of Neumann moves that relates the pair of graphs if the answer is positive. The setting can be understood as a toy model of the problem of deciding whether a pair of Kirby diagrams give diffeomorphic 3- or 4-manifolds.

Non-Semisimple TQFT's and BPS $q$-Series

We propose and in some cases prove a precise relation between 3-manifold invariants associated with quantum groups at roots of unity and at generic $q$. Both types of invariants are labeled by extra data which plays an important role in the proposed relation. Bridging the two sides - which until recently were developed independently, using very different methods - opens many new avenues. In one direction, it allows to study (and perhaps even to formulate) $q$-series invariants labeled by spin$^c$ structures in terms of non-semisimple invariants. In the opposite direction, it offers new insights and perspectives on various elements of non-semisimple TQFT's, bringing the latter into one unifying framework with other invariants of knots and 3-manifolds that recently found realization in quantum field theory and in string theory.

$\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ symmetry

We summarize basic features of quantum field theories with discrete symmetry $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ (possibly higher form, global or gauged). The classification of representations and anomalies is quite rich and involves the ring of profinite integers. As a main example we consider in detail 3d topological Dijkgraaf-Witten $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ gauge theories. We also briefly discuss relevance for some previously considered physical systems. In particular we comment on a relation to the recently discovered non-invertible symmetry in 4d QED and the problem of categorification of Chern-Simons TQFT.

Spin-cobordisms, surgeries and fermionic modular bootstrap

We consider general fermionic quantum field theories with a global finite group symmetry $G$, focusing on the case of 2-dimensions and torus spacetime. The modular transformation properties of the family of partition functions with different backgrounds is determined by the 't Hooft anomaly of $G$ and fermion parity. For a general possibly non-abelian $G$ we provide a method to determine the modular transformations directly from the bulk 3d invertible topological quantum field theory (iTQFT) corresponding to the anomaly by inflow. We also describe a method of evaluating the character map from the real representation ring of $G$ to the group which classifies anomalies. Physically the value of the map is given by the anomaly of free fermions in a given representation. We assume classification of the anomalies/iTQFTs by spin-cobordisms. As a byproduct, for all abelian symmetry groups $G$, we provide explicit combinatorial expressions for corresponding spin-bordism invariants in terms of surgery representation of arbitrary closed spin 3-manifolds. We work out the case of $G=\mathbb{Z}_2$ in detail, and, as an application, we consider the constraints that 't Hooft anomaly puts on the spectrum of the infrared conformal field theory.

Supergroups, q-series and 3-manifolds

We introduce supergroup analogues of 3-manifold invariants $\hat{Z}$, also known as homological blocks, which were previously considered for ordinary compact semisimple Lie groups. We focus on superunitary groups, and work out the case of SU(2|1) in details. Physically these invariants are realized as the index of BPS states of a system of intersecting fivebranes wrapping a 3-manifold in M-theory. As in the original case, the homological blocks are q-series with integer coefficients. We provide an explicit algorithm to calculate these q-series for a class of plumbed 3-manifolds and study quantum modularity and resurgence properties for some particular 3-manifolds. Finally, we conjecture a formula relating the $\hat{Z}$ invariants and the quantum invariants constructed from a non-semisimple category of representation of the unrolled version of a quantum supergroup.

Three Avatars of Mock Modularity

Mock theta functions were introduced by Ramanujan in 1920 but a proper understanding of mock modularity has emerged only recently with the work of Zwegers in 2002. In these lectures we describe three manifestations of this apparently exotic mathematics in three important physical contexts of holography, topology and duality where mock modularity has come to play an important role.

Duality and Mock Modularity

We derive a holomorphic anomaly equation for the Vafa-Witten partition function for twisted four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} =4$ super Yang-Mills theory on $\mathbb{CP}^{2}$ for the gauge group $SO(3)$ from the path integral of the effective theory on the Coulomb branch. The holomorphic kernel of this equation, which receives contributions only from the instantons, is not modular but `mock modular'. The partition function has correct modular properties expected from $S$-duality only after including the anomalous nonholomorphic boundary contributions from anti-instantons. Using M-theory duality, we relate this phenomenon to the holomorphic anomaly of the elliptic genus of a two-dimensional noncompact sigma model and compute it independently in two dimensions. The anomaly both in four and in two dimensions can be traced to a topological term in the effective action of six-dimensional (2,0) theory on the tensor branch. We consider generalizations to other manifolds and other gauge groups to show that mock modularity is generic and essential for exhibiting duality when the relevant field space is noncompact.
