Exponent of a finite group admitting a coprime automorphism

Let $G$ be a finite group admitting a coprime automorphism $ϕ$ of order $n$. Denote by $G_ϕ$ the centralizer of $ϕ$ in $G$ and by $G_{-ϕ}$ the set $\{ x^{-1}x^ϕ; \ x\in G\}$. We prove the following results. 1. If every element from $G_ϕ\cup G_{-ϕ}$ is contained in a $ϕ$-invariant subgroup of exponent dividing $e$, then the exponent of $G$ is $(e,n)$-bounded. 2. Suppose that $G_ϕ$ is nilpotent of class $c$. If $x^{e}=1$ for each $x \in G_{-ϕ}$ and any two elements of $G_{-ϕ}$ are contained in a $ϕ$-invariant soluble subgroup of derived length $d$, then the exponent of $[G,ϕ]$ is bounded in terms of $c,d,e,n$.

On finite-by-nilpotent groups

Let $γ_n=[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the $n$th lower central word. Denote by $X_n$ the set of $γ_n$-values in a group $G$ and suppose that there is a number $m$ such that $|g^{X_n}|\leq m$ for each $g\in G$. We prove that $γ_{n+1}(G)$ has finite $(m,n)$-bounded order. This generalizes the much celebrated theorem of B. H. Neumann that says that the commutator subgroup of a BFC-group is finite.

Words of Engel type are concise in residually finite groups. Part II

Given a group-word w and a group G, the verbal subgroup w(G) is the one generated by all w-values in G. The word w is called concise if w(G) is finite whenever the set of w-values in G is finite. It is an open question whether every word is concise in residually finite groups. Let w=w(x_1,..,x_k) be a multilinear commutator word, n a positive integer and q a prime power. In the present article we show that the word [w^q,_n y] is concise in residually finite groups while the word [w,_n y] is boundedly concise in residually finite groups.

On groups in which Engel sinks are cyclic

For an element $g$ of a group $G$, an Engel sink is a subset $\mathcal{E}(g)$ such that for every $ x\in G $ all sufficiently long commutators $ [x,g,g,\ldots,g] $ belong to $\mathcal{E}(g)$. We conjecture that if $G$ is a profinite group in which every element admits a sink that is a procyclic subgroup, then $G$ is procyclic-by-(locally nilpotent). We prove the conjecture in two cases -- when $G$ is a finite group, or a soluble pro-$p$ group.

Exponent of a finite group of odd order with an involutory automorphism

Let $G$ be a finite group of odd order admitting an involutory automorphism $ϕ$. We obtain two results bounding the exponent of $[G,ϕ]$. Denote by $G_{-ϕ}$ the set $\{[g,ϕ]\,\vert\, g\in G\}$ and by $G_ϕ$ the centralizer of $ϕ$, that is, the subgroup of fixed points of $ϕ$. The obtained results are as follows.1. Assume that the subgroup $\langle x,y\rangle$ has derived length at most $d$ and $x^e=1$ for every $x,y\in G_{-ϕ}$. Suppose that $G_ϕ$ is nilpotent of class $c$. Then the exponent of $[G,ϕ]$ is $(c,d,e)$-bounded.2. Assume that $G_ϕ$ has rank $r$ and $x^e=1$ for each $x\in G_{-ϕ}$. Then the exponent of $[G,ϕ]$ is $(e,r)$-bounded.

On finite groups in which commutators are covered by Engel subgroups

Let $m,n$ be positive integers and $w$ a multilinear commutator word. Assume that $G$ is a finite group having subgroups $G_1,\ldots,G_m$ whose union contains all $w$-values in $G$. Assume further that all elements of the subgroups $G_1,\ldots,G_m$ are $n$-Engel in $G$. It is shown that the verbal subgroup $w(G)$ is $s$-Engel for some $\{m,n,w\}$-bounded number $s$.

Fitting subgroup and nilpotent residual of fixed points

Let $q$ be a prime and $A$ an elementary abelian group of order at least $q^3$ acting by automorphisms on a finite $q'$-group $G$. It is proved that if $|γ_{\infty}(C_{G}(a))|\leq m$ for any $a\in A^{\#}$, then the order of $γ_{\infty}(G)$ is $m$-bounded. If $F(C_{G}(a))$ has index at most $m$ in $C_G(a)$ for any $a \in A^{\#}$, then the index of $F_2(G)$ is $m$-bounded.

Profinite groups with pronilpotent centralizers

The article deals with profinite groups in which the centralizers are pronilpotent (CN-groups). It is shown that such groups are virtually pronilpotent. More precisely, let G be a profinite CN-group, and let F be the maximal normal pronilpotent subgroup of G. It is shown that F is open and the structure of the finite quotient G/F is described in detail.

Engel sinks of fixed points in finite groups

For an element $g$ of a group $G$, an Engel sink is a subset $\mathscr{E}(g)$ such that for every $ x\in G $ all sufficiently long commutators $ [x,g,g,\ldots,g] $ belong to $\mathscr{E}(g)$. Let $q$ be a prime, let $m$ be a positive integer and $A$ an elementary abelian group of order $q^2$ acting coprimely on a finite group $G$. We show that if for each nontrivial element $a$ in $ A$ and every element $g\in C_{G}(a)$ the cardinality of the smallest Engel sink $\mathscr{E}(g)$ is at most $m$, then the order of $γ_\infty(G)$ is bounded in terms of $m$ only. Moreover we prove that if for each $a\in A\setminus \{1\}$ and every element $g\in C_{G}(a)$, the smallest Engel sink $\mathscr{E}(g)$ generates a subgroup of rank at most $m$, then the rank of $γ_\infty(G)$ is bounded in terms of $m$ and $q$ only.

Profinite groups in which centralizers are abelian

The article deals with profinite groups in which the centralizers are abelian (CA-groups), that is, with profinite commutativity-transitive groups. It is shown that such groups are virtually pronilpotent. More precisely, let G be a profinite CA-group. It is shown that G has a normal open subgroup N which is either abelian or pro-p. Further, a rather detailed information about the finite quotient G/N is obtained.

Engel groups with an identity

We give an affrmative answer to the question whether a residually finite Engel group satisfying an identity is locally nilpotent. More generally, for a residually finite group G with an identity, we prove that the set of right Engel elements of G is contained in the Hirsch-Plotkin radical of G. Given an arbitrary word w, we also show that the class of all groups G in which the w-values are right n-Engel and w(G) is locally nilpotent is a variety.

BFC-theorems for higher commutator subgroups

A BFC-group is a group in which all conjugacy classes are finite with bounded size. In 1954 B. H. Neumann discovered that if G is a BFC-group then the derived group G' is finite. Let w=w(x_1,\dots,x_n) be a multilinear commutator. We study groups in which the conjugacy classes containing w-values are finite of bounded order. Let G be a group and let w(G) be the verbal subgroup of G generated by all w-values. We prove that if x^G has size at most m for every w-value x, then the derived subgroup of w(G) is finite of order bounded by a function of m and n. If x^{w(G)} has size at most m for every w-value x, then [w(w(G)),w(G)] is finite of order bounded by a function of m and n.

Groups with Boundedly Finite Conjugacy Classes of Commutators

In 1954 B. H. Neumann discovered that if G is a group in which all conjugacy classes are finite with bounded size, then the derived group G' is finite. Later (in 1957) Wiegold found an explicit bound for the order of G'. We study groups in which the conjugacy classes containing commutators are finite with bounded size. We obtain the following results. Let G be a group and n a positive integer. If |x^G|<n for any commutator x in G, then the second derived group G" is finite with n-bounded order. If |x^{G'}|<n for any commutator x in G, then the order of γ_3(G') is finite and $n$-bounded. Here γ_3(G') is the third term of the lower central series of G'.

Linear groups with almost right Engel elements

Let G be a linear group such that for every g in G there is a finite set R(g) with the property that for every x in G all sufficiently long commutators [g,x,x,...,x] belong to R(g). It is proved that G is finite-by-hypercentral.

Nilpotent residual of fixed points

Let $q$ be a prime and $A$ a finite $q$-group of exponent $q$ acting by automorphisms on a finite $q'$-group $G$. Assume that $A$ has order at least $q^3$. We show that if $γ_{\infty} (C_{G}(a))$ has order at most $m$ for any $a \in A^{\#}$, then the order of $γ_{\infty} (G)$ is bounded solely in terms of $m$ and $q$. If $γ_{\infty} (C_{G}(a))$ has rank at most $r$ for any $a \in A^{\#}$, then the rank of $γ_{\infty} (G)$ is bounded solely in terms of $r$ and $q$.

Engel-type subgroups and length parameters of finite groups

Let $g$ be an element of a finite group $G$. For a positive integer $n$, let $E_n(g)$ be the subgroup generated by all commutators $[...[[x,g],g],\dots,g]$ over $x\in G$, where $g$ is repeated $n$ times. By Baer's theorem, if $E_n(g)=1$, then $g$ belongs to the Fitting subgroup $F(G)$. We generalize this theorem in terms of certain length parameters of $E_n(g)$. For soluble $G$ we prove that if, for some $n$, the Fitting height of $E_n(g)$ is equal to $k$, then $g$ belongs to the $(k+1)$th Fitting subgroup $F_{k+1}(G)$. For nonsoluble $G$ the results are in terms of nonsoluble length and generalized Fitting height. The generalized Fitting height $h^*(H)$ of a finite group $H$ is the least number $h$ such that $F^*_h(H)=H$, where $F^*_0(H)=1$, and $F^*_{i+1}(H)$ is the inverse image of the generalized Fitting subgroup $F^*(H/F^*_{i}(H))$. Let $m$ be the number of prime factors of $|g|$ counting multiplicities. It is proved that if, for some $n$, the generalized Fitting height of $E_n(g)$ is equal to $k$, then $g$ belongs to $F^*_{f(k,m)}(G)$, where $f(k,m)$ depends only on $k$ and $m$. The nonsoluble length $λ(H)$ of a finite group $H$ is defined as the minimum number of nonsoluble factors in a normal series each of whose factors either is soluble or is a direct product of nonabelian simple groups. It is proved that if $λ(E_n(g))=k$, then $g$ belongs to a normal subgroup whose nonsoluble length is bounded in terms of $k$ and $m$. We also state conjectures of stronger results independent of $m$ and show that these conjectures reduce to a certain question about automorphisms of direct products of finite simple groups.

Words of Engel type are concise in residually finite groups

Given a group-word w and a group G, the verbal subgroup w(G) is the one generated by all w-values in G. The word w is said to be concise if w(G) is finite whenever the set of w-values in G is finite. In the sixties P. Hall asked whether every word is concise but later Ivanov answered this question in the negative. On the other hand, Hall's question remains wide open in the class of residually finite groups. In the present article we show that various generalizations of the Engel word are concise in residually finite groups.

On profinite groups with commutators covered by countably many cosets

Let w be a group-word. Suppose that the set of all w-values in a profinite group G is contained in a union of countably many cosets of subgroups. We are concerned with the question to what extent the structure of the verbal subgroup w(G) depends on the properties of the subgroups. We prove the following theorem. Let C be a class of groups closed under taking subgroups, quotients, and such that in any group the product of finitely many normal C-subgroups is again a C-subgroup. If w is a multilinear commutator and G is a profinite group such that the set of all w-values is contained in a union of countably many cosets g_iG_i where each G_i is in C, then the verbal subgroup w(G) is virtually-C. This strengthens several known results.
