Profinite properties of graph manifolds

Let $M$ be a closed, orientable, irreducible, geometrizable 3-manifold. We prove that the profinite topology on the fundamental group of $π_1(M)$ is efficient with respect to the JSJ decomposition of $M$. We go on to prove that $π_1(M)$ is good, in the sense of Serre, if all the pieces of the JSJ decomposition are. We also prove that if $M$ is a graph manifold then $π_1(M)$ is conjugacy separable.

Subgroup properties of pro-p extensions of centralizers

We prove that a finitely generated pro-$p$ group acting on a pro-$p$ tree $T$ with procyclic edge stabilizers is the fundamental pro-$p$ group of a finite graph of pro-$p$ groups with edge and vertex groups being stabilizers of certain vertices and edges of $T$ respectively, in the following two situations: 1) the action is $n$-acylindrical, i.e., any non-identity element fixes not more than $n$ edges; 2) the group $G$ is generated by its vertex stabilizers. This theorem is applied to obtain several results about pro-$p$ groups from the class $\mathcal{L}$ defined and studied in [Math. Z. 267 (2011), 109-128] as pro-$p$ analogues of limit groups. We prove that every pro-$p$ group $G$ from the class $\mathcal{L}$ is the fundamental pro-$p$ group of a finite graph of pro-$p$ groups with infinite procyclic or trivial edge groups and finitely generated vertex groups; moreover, all non-abelian vertex groups are from the class $\mathcal{L}$ of lower level than $G$ with respect to the natural hierarchy. This allows us to give an affirmative answer to questions 9.1 and 9.3 in [Math. Z. 267 (2011), 109-128]. Namely, we prove that a group $G$ from the class $\mathcal{L}$ has Euler-Poincaré characteristic zero if and only if it is abelian, and if every abelian pro-$p$ subgroup of $G$ is procyclic and $G$ itself is not procyclic, then $def(G) \geq 2$. Moreover, we prove that $G$ satisfies the Greenberg-Stallings property and any finitely generated non-abelian subgroup of $G$ has finite index in its commensurator. We also show that all non-solvable Demushkin groups satisfy the Greenberg-Stallings property and each of their finitely generated non-trivial subgroups has finite index in its commensurator.

Separability of double cosets and conjugacy classes in 3-manifold groups

Let M = H^3 / Γbe a hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume. We show that if H and K are abelian subgroups of Γand g is in Γ, then the double coset HgK is separable in Γ. As a consequence we prove that if M is a closed, orientable, Haken 3-manifold and the fundamental group of every hyperbolic piece of the torus decomposition of M is conjugacy separable then so is the fundamental group of M. Invoking recent work of Agol and Wise, it follows that if M is a compact, orientable 3-manifold then π_1(M) is conjugacy separable.

Subgroups of profinite surface groups

We study the subgroup structure of the étale fundamental group $Π$ of a projective curve over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. We obtain an analog of the diamond theorem for $Π$. As a consequence we show that most normal subgroups of infinite index are semi-free. In particular every proper open subgroup of a normal subgroup of infinite index is semi-free.

The congruence subgroup problem for branch groups

We state and study the congruence subgroup problem for groups acting on rooted tree, and for branch groups in particular. The problem is reduced to the computation of the congruence kernel, which we split into two parts: the branch kernel and the rigid kernel. In the case of regular branch groups, we prove that the first one is Abelian while the second has finite exponent. We also establish some rigidity results concerning these kernels. We work out explicitly known and new examples of non-trivial congruence kernels, describing in each case the group action. The Hanoi tower group receives particular attention due to its surprisingly rich behaviour.
