Potential energy of totally positive algebraic integers

Given positive real numbers, we prove two inequalities involving their potential energy and their power sums. We also prove an inequality involving the energy and the discriminant and apply it to deduce a result on totally positive irreducible polynomials.

Consecutive real quadratic fields with large class numbers

For a given positive integer $k$, we prove that there are at least $x^{1/2-o(1)}$ integers $d\leq x$ such that the real quadratic fields $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{d+1}),\dots,\mathbb Q(\sqrt{d+k})$ have class numbers essentially as large as possible.

On the spectral gap of the path graph in the limit of large volume

In this paper we study the spectral gap of the path graph and illustrate an interesting effect which has been described recently in the continuous setting. More explicitly, in the large-volume limit and in the presence of a certain external potential, it is shown that the spectral gap converges to zero strictly faster than it does for the free Laplacian. The underlying mechanism is a combination of the increase in volume and an effective degeneracy of the ground state in the limiting regime.

Cyclic polytope of the simplest cubic fields

In this paper, we study dilation of cyclic polytopes with the vertices defined by a generator of the simplest cubic fields. In particular, for a specific range of values, we give a precise number of the contained lattice points.

Sums of squares in $S$-integers

In totally real number fields, we characterize the rings of $S$-integers (obtained by inverting a rational integer $m$) such that all their totally positive elements are represented as a sum of squares. We further obtain partial answers to the question: when are all the totally positive algebraic integers that are divisible by $m$ represented as a sum of squares?

Lifting problem for universal quadratic forms

We study totally real number fields that admit a universal quadratic form whose coefficients are rational integers. We show that $\mathbb Q(\sqrt 5)$ is the only such real quadratic field, and that among fields of degrees 3, 4, 5, and 7 which have principal codifferent ideal, the only one is $\mathbb Q(ζ_7+ζ_7^{-1})$, over which the form $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2+xy+xz+xw$ is universal. Moreover, we prove an upper bound for Pythagoras numbers of orders in number fields that depends only on the degree of the number field.

Equiangular lines in low dimensional Euclidean spaces

We show that the maximum cardinality of an equiangular line system in 14 and 16 dimensions is 28 and 40, respectively, thereby solving a longstanding open problem. We also improve the upper bounds on the cardinality of equiangular line systems in 19 and 20 dimensions to 74 and 94, respectively.

On equiangular lines in 17 dimensions and the characteristic polynomial of a Seidel matrix

For $e$ a positive integer, we find restrictions modulo $2^e$ on the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial $χ_S(x)$ of a Seidel matrix $S$. We show that, for a Seidel matrix of order $n$ even (resp. odd), there are at most $2^{\binom{e-2}{2}}$ (resp. $2^{\binom{e-2}{2}+1}$) possibilities for the congruence class of $χ_S(x)$ modulo $2^e\mathbb Z[x]$. As an application of these results, we obtain an improvement to the upper bound for the number of equiangular lines in $\mathbb R^{17}$, that is, we reduce the known upper bound from $50$ to $49$.

A lower bound for the rank of a universal quadratic form with integer coefficients in a totally real number field

We show that if $K$ is a monogenic, primitive, totally real number field, that contains units of every signature, then there exists a lower bound for the rank of integer universal quadratic forms defined over $K$. In particular, we extend the work of Blomer and Kala, to show that there exist infinitely many totally real cubic number fields that do not have a universal quadratic form of a given rank defined over them. For the real quadratic number fields with a unit of negative norm, we show that the minimal rank of a universal quadratic form goes to infinity as the discriminant of the number field grows. These results follow from the study of interlacing polynomials. Specifically, we show that there are only finitely many irreducible monic polynomials related to primitive number fields of a given degree, that have a bounded number of interlacing polynomials.
