Mapping the strong-to-weak coupling crossover in polymer-film microcavity lasers

Organic semiconductors are particularly attractive for polaritonics due to their large exciton binding energies and oscillator strengths. Among them, the ladder-type conjugated polymer poly(paraphenylene) is distinguished by its rigid backbone, narrow exciton linewidth, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and enhanced photostability, making it an excellent candidate for organic polariton devices. While polariton lasing has been reported in various organic systems, systematic studies of the transition from polariton lasing to conventional photon lasing within a single, well-controlled material platform remain limited. Here, we present planar organic microcavities incorporating MeLPPP as the active medium, in which continuous tuning of the effective cavity length within a single device enables us to map the strong-to-weak coupling transition across five distinct cavity-mode orders. We demonstrate an approximately eighteen-fold increase in the lasing threshold when crossing from polariton to photon lasing. We further establish a quantitative framework in which the spectral dependence of the threshold governs a universal V-shaped blueshift of the emission energy across both coupling regimes. Finally, we show that vibron-mediated exciton relaxation, previously identified in the strong-coupling limit, persists across the crossover: lasing-threshold minima track the vibron resonances throughout the coupling transition.

Searching for Dark Photons with a room-temperature dielectric haloscope

We present a search for dark-photon dark matter with a room-temperature dielectric multilayer haloscope. The dielectric stack enhances photon conversion near 2 eV, and a spatially resolved CMOS focal plane records the emitted photons with few-photon sensitivity. We calibrate the stack-lens-CMOS response in situ and use the calibrated focal-plane pattern in a template-based inference. With 904 h of search data and 404 h of background-control data, we observe no excess and set a 90% confidence-level upper limit of $κ< 4.0\times10^{-13}$ for dark-photon dark matter with mass 1.9$\,\mathrm{eV}/c^2$.

Optically and remotely controlling localization of exciton polariton condensates in a potential lattice

Exciton polaritons are inherently tunable systems with adjustable potential landscape. In this work we show that exciton polariton condensates can be selectively localized in a fixed optically induced periodic lattice with uniform potential depth, by judiciously controlling a second focused pump of very small size away from the lattice chain. Specifically, the localized polariton condensate can be tuned among different potential traps by adjusting the relative distance between the small pump spot and the potential lattice. The adjustment of the excitation position of the smaller pump spot and its combination with the fixed larger pump spot for the potential creation induce the mode selection determined by gain profile, group velocity, and potential distribution within the system. The localization of the exciton polariton condensate and its control are independent of the orientation of the potential lattice, thus, even in slightly disordered system, one can selectively excite such localized polariton condensates. Our results illuminate a path to the remote manipulation of exciton polariton bosonic condensates in fixed integrated photonic chips and circuits.

Fully Programmable Spatial Photonic Ising Machine by Focal Plane Division

Ising machines are an emerging class of hardware that promises ultrafast and energy-efficient solutions to NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. Spatial photonic Ising machines (SPIMs) exploit optical computing in free space to accelerate the computation, showcasing parallelism, scalability, and low power consumption. However, current SPIMs can implement only a restricted class of problems. This partial programmability is a critical limitation that hampers their benchmark. Achieving full programmability of the device while preserving its scalability is an open challenge. Here, we report a fully programmable SPIM achieved through a novel operation method based on the division of the focal plane. In our scheme, a general Ising problem is decomposed into a set of Mattis Hamiltonians, whose energies are simultaneously computed optically by measuring the intensity on different regions of the camera sensor. Exploiting this concept, we experimentally demonstrate the computation with high success probability of ground-state solutions of up to 32-spin Ising models on unweighted maximum cut graphs with and without ferromagnetic bias. Simulations of the hardware prove a favorable scaling of the accuracy with the number of spins. Our fully programmable SPIM enables the implementation of many quadratic unconstrained binary optimization problems, further establishing SPIMs as a leading paradigm in non von Neumann hardware.

Relaxation Oscillations in the Formation of a Polariton Condensate

We report observation of oscillations in the dynamics of a microcavity polariton condensate formed under pulsed non resonant excitation. While oscillations in a condensate have always been attributed to Josephson mechanisms due to a chemical potential unbalance, here we show that under some localisation conditions of the condensate, they may arise from relaxation oscillations, a pervasive classical dynamics that repeatedly provokes the sudden decay of a reservoir, shutting off relaxation as the reservoir is replenished. Using non-resonant excitation, it is thus possible to obtain condensate injection pulses with a record frequency of 0:1 THz.

The Non-linear Optical Spin Hall Effect and Long-Range Spin Transport in Polariton Lasers

We report on the experimental observation of the non-linear analogue of the optical spin Hall effect under highly non-resonant circularly polarized excitation of an exciton polariton condensate in a GaAs/AlGaAs microcavity. Initially circularly polarized polariton condensates propagate over macroscopic distances while the collective condensate spins coherently precess around an effective magnetic field in the sample plane performing up to four complete revolutions.

Polariton ring condensates and sunflower ripples in an expanding quantum liquid

Optically pumping high quality semiconductor microcavities allows for the spontaneous formation of polariton condensates, which can propagate over distances of many microns. Tightly focussed pump spots here are found to produce expanding incoherent bottleneck polaritons which coherently amplify the ballistic polaritons and lead to the formation of unusual ring condensates. This quantum liquid is found to form a remarkable sunflower-like spatial ripple pattern which arises from self interference with Rayleigh-scattered coherent polariton waves in the Cerenkov regime.

Oriented polaritons in strongly-coupled asymmetric double quantum well microcavities

Replacing independent single quantum wells inside a strongly-coupled semiconductor microcavity with double quantum wells produces a special type of polariton. Using asymmetric double quantum wells in devices processed into mesas allows the alignment of the electron levels to be voltage-tuned. At the resonant electronic tunnelling condition, we demonstrate that `oriented polaritons' are formed, which possess greatly enhanced dipole moments. Since the polariton-polariton scattering rate depends on this dipole moment, such devices could reach polariton lasing, condensation and optical nonlinearities at much lower threshold powers.
