Quantum dots as optimized chiral emitters for photonic integrated circuits

Chiral coupling, which allows directional interactions between quantum dots (QDs) and photonic crystal waveguide modes, holds promise for enhancing the functionality of quantum photonic integrated circuits. Elliptical polarizations of QD transitions offer a considerable enhancement in directionality. However, in epitaxial QD fabrication, the lack of precise control over lateral QD positions still poses a challenge in achieving efficient chiral interfaces. Here, we present a theoretical analysis in which we propose to optimize the polarization of a QD emitter against the spatially averaged directionality and demonstrate that the resulting emitter offers a considerable technological advantage in terms of the size and location of high-directionality areas of the waveguide as well as their overlap with the regions of large Purcell enhancement, thereby improving the scalability of the device. Moreover, using $\mathbf{\mathit{k}}\cdot\mathbf{\mathit{p}}$ modeling, we demonstrate that the optimal elliptical polarization can be achieved for neutral exciton transitions in a realistic QD structure. Our results present a viable path for efficient chiral coupling in QD-based photonic integrated circuits, to a large extent overcoming the challenges and limitations of the present manufacturing technology.

Near-field plasmonics for generation of phonon lasing in a thermal nanomachine

Recent advances in near-field plasmonic metamaterials, such as nanoresonators or transducers, have demonstrated the ability to generate localized fields of high intensity, and thus maintain relatively large nanoscale heat gradients on the order of $10^1-10^2$~K/nm. A plasmonic near-field transducer (NFT) can achieve such large gradients, making population inversion achievable within phononic media. We herein develop a thermal nanomachine composed of a nanoscale phononic laser using InGaAs quantum dot media where an NFT serves as the plasmonic energy source. We show, on demand, the generation of phonons while having full control of the phonon lasing medium. We also demonstrate the ability to obtain population inversion of a photonic transition in the system if one chooses.

Phonon-assisted carrier tunneling in coupled quantum dot systems with hyperfine-induced spin flip

We calculate the rates of phonon-assisted hyperfine spin flips during electron and hole tunneling between quantum dots in a self-assembled quantum dot molecule. We show that the hyperfine process dominates over the spin-orbit-induced spin relaxation in magnetic fields up to a few Tesla for electrons, while for holes this cross-over takes place at field magnitudes of a fraction of Tesla, upon the assumption of a large $d$-shell admixture to the valence band state, resulting in a strong transverse hyperfine coupling. The interplay of the two spin-flip mechanisms leads to a minimum of the spin-flip probability, which is in principle experimentally measurable and can be used as a test for the presence of substantial transverse hyperfine couplings in the valence band.

Coherent phonon lasing in a thermal quantum nanomachine

The notion of nanomachines has recently emerged to engage and use collective action of ensembles of nanoscale components or systems. Here we present a heat-gradient driven nanomachine concept which through appropriate coupling between quantum nanosystems is capable of realising and maintaining an inversion. Based on a Lindblad form of the Quantum Master Equation with a semiclassical coupling to the lattice displacement phonon field we show that this positive inversion can be harnessed to generate coherent optomechanical oscillations and phonon lasing.

Polaron resonances in two vertically stacked quantum dots

In this work, we present a theoretical study of polaron states in a double quantum dot system. We present realistic calculations which combine 8 band \kp model, configuration interaction approach and collective modes method. We investigate the dependence of polaron energy branches on axial electric field. We show that coupling between carriers and longitudinal optical phonons via Fröhlich interaction leads to qualitative and quantitative reconstruction of the optical spectra. In particular, we study the structure of resonances between the states localized in different dots. We show that $p$-shell states are strongly coupled to the phonon replicas of $s$-shell states, in contrast to the weak direct $s$-$p$ coupling. We discuss also the dependence of the phonon-assisted tunnel coupling strength on the separation between the dots.

Decay and persistence of spatial coherence during phonon-assisted relaxation in double quantum dots

We present a theoretical study of the evolution of spatial coherence during relaxation between delocalized exciton states in a pair of vertically stacked semiconductor quantum dots coupled to acoustic phonons. We show that spatial coherence can be transferred to the ground state even in a system of uncoupled non-identical quantum dots if a particular kind of degeneracy between the inter-level energy splittings is present. The phonon-assisted mechanism of coherence transfer leads to a dependence of the amount of the resulting coherence on the inter-dot distance and temperature. We analyze also the impact of carrier-phonon dynamics on a coupled system, where spatial coherence is present in the delocalized ground state.
