Ferroelectric $π$-stacks of molecules with the energy gaps in the sunlight range

Ferroelectric $π$-stacked molecular wires for solar cell applications are theoretically designed, in such a way that their energy gaps fall within visible and infrared range of the Sun radiation. Band engineering is tailored by a modification of the number of the aromatic rings and via a choice of the number and kind of the dipole groups. The electronic structures of molecular wires and the chemical character of the electron-hole pair are analyzed within the density functional theory (DFT) framework and the hybrid DFT approach by means of the B3LYP scheme. Moreover, it is found that one of the advantageous properties of these systems - namely the separate-path electron and hole transport - reported earlier, still holds for the larger molecules, due to the dipole selection rules for the electron-hole generation, which do not allow the lowest optical transitions between the states localized at the same part of the molecule.

Entanglement preservation in quantum cloning

Recently Galvão and Hardy have shown that quantum cloning can improve the performance of some quantum computation tasks. However such performance enhancement is possible only if quantum correlations survive the cloning process. We investigate preservation of the quantum correlations in the process of non--local cloning of entangled pairs of two--level systems. We consider different kinds of quantum cloning machines and compare their effectiveness in the cloning of non--maximally entangled pure states. A mean entanglement is introduced in order to obtain a quantitative evaluation of an average efficiency for the different cloning machines. We show that a reduction of the quantum correlations is significant and it strongly depends upon the kind of cloning machine used. Losses of the entanglement are largest in the case of the universal quantum cloning machine. Generally, in all cases considered the losses of the entanglement are so drastic that the method of enhancement for the performance of the quantum computation using the quantum cloning seems to be questionable.
