On the Probability of Network States with Gaussian Connectivity Functions

In this paper, we consider the connectivity of a random network of N mobile devices in three dimensions (3D), where the location of each device or node has a Gaussian distribution in each dimension. For each pair of nodes, the probability of connectivity is related to the nodes' separation by a Gaussian connectivity function. The fundamental analytical tool for studying such systems is the probability of a given network state, derived and expressed in terms of its graph Laplacian. Leveraging this result, we obtain results for the connectivity of small networks, the probability of a complete network (where all nodes are connected to all other nodes), and the probability of an isolated node, which gives an approximation to the connectivity probability of larger networks. The general results are then simplified for special cases and limiting scenarios.

Beam Squinting Effects in Super Wideband Communication Systems

Beam squint, the frequency-dependent shift of the main beam, poses a major challenge for wideband antenna arrays. This paper focuses on the beam squint effects in super wideband (SW) systems, where high mutual coupling (MC) effects are present. These high MC effects complicate beamforming (BF) by creating frequency-dependent phase relationships that invalidate conventional approaches. To accurately model MC effects, this paper uses a circuit-theoretic framework for tightly coupled SW uniform linear arrays (ULAs). We derive closed-form expressions for the average received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with BF in conventional half-wavelength spaced, weakly coupled arrays and validate them. Extending our analysis to tightly coupled SW arrays, we demonstrate that, in contrast to conventional weakly coupled arrays, the effective true time delays exhibit a nonlinear dependence on frequency due to coupling-induced phase shifts. A comparative analysis reveals that strong MC in SW arrays significantly reduces squint in phase-controlled BF, extending the usable bandwidth considerably.

Massive MIMO Asymptotics for Ray-Based Propagation Channels

Favorable propagation (FP) and channel hardening (CH) are desired properties in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To date, these properties have primarily been analyzed for classical \textit{statistical} channel models, or \textit{ray-based} models with very specific angular parameters and distributions. This paper presents a thorough mathematical analysis of the asymptotic system behavior for ray-based channels with \textit{arbitrary} ray distributions, and considers \textit{two} types of antenna array structures at the cellular base station: a uniform linear array (ULA) and a uniform planar array (UPA). In addition to FP and channel hardening, we analyze the \textit{large system potential} (LSP) which measures the asymptotic ratio of the expected power in the desired channel to the expected total interference power when both the antenna and user numbers grow. LSP is said to hold when this ratio converges to a positive constant. The results demonstrate that while FP is guaranteed in ray-based channels, CH may or may not occur depending on the nature of the model. Furthermore, we demonstrate that LSP will not normally hold as the expected interference power grows logarithmically for both ULAs and UPAs relative to the power in the desired channel as the system size increases. Nevertheless, we identify some fundamental and attractive properties of massive MIMO in this limiting regime.

Parametric Schemes for Prediction of Wideband MIMO Wireless Channels

Information on the future state of time varying frequency selective channels can significantly enhance the effectiveness of feedback in adaptive and limited feedback MIMO-OFDM systems. This paper investigates the parametric extrapolation of wideband MIMO channels using variations of the double directional MIMO model. We propose three predictors which estimate parameters of the channel using 4D, 3D and 2D extensions of the ESPRIT algorithm and predict future states of the channel using the models. Furthermore, using the vector formulation of the Cramer Rao lower bound for functions of parameters, we derive a bound on the prediction error in wideband MIMO channels. Numerical simulations are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms under different channel and transmission conditions, and a comparison is made with the derived error bound.

An Asymptotic Bound on Estimation and Prediction of Mobile MIMO-OFDM Wireless Channels

In this paper, we derive an asymptotic closed--form expression for the error bound on extrapolation of doubly selective mobile MIMO wireless channels. The bound shows the relationship between the prediction error and system design parameters such as bandwidth, number of antenna elements, and number of frequency and temporal pilots, thereby providing useful insights into the effects of these parameters on prediction performance. Numerical simulations show that the asymptotic bound provides a good approximation to previously derived bounds while eliminating the need for repeated computation and dependence on channel parameters such as angles of arrival and departure, delays and Doppler shifts.
