Bursting oscillations induced by small noise

We consider a model of a square-wave bursting neuron residing in the regime of tonic spiking. Upon introduction of small stochastic forcing, the model generates irregular bursting. The statistical properties of the emergent bursting patterns are studied in the present work. In particular, we identify two principal statistical regimes associated with the noise-induced bursting. In the first case, (type I) bursting oscillations are created mainly due to the fluctuations in the fast subsystem. In the alternative scenario, type II bursting, the random perturbations in the slow dynamics play a dominant role. We propose two classes of randomly perturbed slow-fast systems that realize type I and type II scenarios. For these models, we derive the Poincare maps. The analysis of the linearized Poincare maps of the randomly perturbed systems explains the distributions of the number of spikes within one burst and reveals their dependence on the small and control parameters present in the models. The mathematical analysis of the model problems is complemented by the numerical experiments with a generic Hodgkin-Huxley type model of a bursting neuron.

Average number of distinct part sizes in a random Carlitz composition

A composition of an integer is called Carlitz if adjacent parts are different. Several characteristics of random Carlitz compsitions have been studied recently by Knopfmacher and Prodinger. We complement their work by establishing the asymptotics of the average number of distinct part sizes in a random Carlitz composition.

S-partitions

This note reports on the number of s-partitions of a natural number n. In an s-partition each cell has the form $2^k-1$ for some integer k. Such partitions have potential applications in cryptography, specifically in distributed computations of the form $a^n$ mod m. The main contribution of this paper is a correction to the upper bound on the number of s-partitions presented by Bhatt. We will give a precise asymptotics for the number of such partitions for a given integer n.

Random partitions with non negative rth differences

Let $P_r(n)$ be the set of partitions of n with non negative rth differences. Let $λ$ be a partition chosen uniformly at random among the set $P_r(n)$. Let $d(λ)$ be a positive rth difference chosen uniformly at random in $λ$. The aim of this work is to show that for every $m\ge 1$, the probability that $d(λ)\ge m$ approaches $m^{-1/r}$ as $n\to\infty$. To prove this result we use bijective, asymptotic/analytic, and probabilistic combinatorics.

A generatingfunctionology approach to a problem of Wilf

Wilf posed the following problem: determine asymptotically as $n\to\infty$ the probability that a randomly chosen part size in a randomly chosen composition of n has multiplicity m. One solution of this problem was given by Hitczenko and Savage. In this paper, we study this question using the techniques of generating functions and singularity analysis.

Tangent Sequences in Orlicz and Rearrangement Invariant Spaces

Let (f_n) and (g_n) be two sequences of random variables adapted to an increasing sequence of $σ$-algebras $({\cal F}_n)$ such that the conditional distributions of f_n and g_n given ${\cal F}_{n-1}$ coincide, and such that the sequence (g_n) is conditionally independent. Then it is known that $\normo{\sum f_k}_p \le C \normo{\sum g_k}_p$, $1 \le p \le \infty$ where the constant C is independent of p. The aim of this paper is to extend this result to certain classes of Orlicz and rearrangement invariant spaces. This paper includes fairly general techniques for obtaining rearrangement invariant inequalities from Orlicz norm inequalities.

Measuring the magnitude of sums of independent random variables

This paper considers how to measure the magnitude of the sum of independent random variables in several ways. We give a formula for the tail distribution for sequences that satisfy the so called Levy property. We then give a connection between the tail distribution and the pth moment, and between the pth moment and the rearrangement invariant norms.
