Local field of magnetic islands: role of their shape

I analyze in details distribution of local magnetic field induced by micro- and nano-magnets. I consider three kinds of elongated magnetic islands: ellipse-, diamond- and rectangular shaped islands which were magnetized uniformly along long axis. This report concentrates on the role of their shape upon distribution of the field. Calculations show that unlike rectangular-shaped magnet, ellipse-shaped and diamond-shaped ones produce much more localized field in proximity of its magnetic poles. Additionally in the case of ellipse-shaped islands the magnitude of induced field is large. This two facts favor arrays of ellipse-shaped magnetic islands to build zero-dimensional spin traps in a hybrid based on Ferromagnet/Semiconductor structure.

Binding energy of negative trions at high magnetic fields in a CdTe quantum well

We present results of numerical calculations of electronic states of an exciton and a trion in a CdTe quantum well at magnetic fields up to 150T. The exciton state and the trion states were computed using a variational procedure. We estimated the binding energy of the trion in a singlet state with the z-component of angular momentum L_z=0, as well as the binding energy of the trion in a triplet state with L_z=-1. Recent experimental results show that even up to 44T the binding energy of negative trion in a singlet state is bigger than in a triplet state. We show that at a critical field B_c=65T the two binding energies cross and above B_c the binding energy of the trion in a triplet state is bigger than in the singlet state.

Positional Disorder, Spin-Orbit Coupling and Frustration in GaMnAs

We study the magnetic properties of metallic GaMnAs. We calculate the effective RKKY interaction between Mn spins using several realistic models for the valence band structure of GaAs. We also study the effect of positional disorder of the Mn on the magnetic properties. We find that the interaction between two Mn spins is anisotropic due to spin-orbit coupling within both the so-called spherical approximation and in the more realistic six band model. The spherical approximation strongly overestimates this anistropy, especially for short distances between Mn ions. Using the obtained effective Hamiltonian we carry out Monte Carlo simulations of finite and zero temperature magnetization and find that, due to orientational frustration of the spins, non-collinear states appear in both valence band approximations for disordered, uncorrelated Mn impurities in the small concentration regime. Introducing correlations among the substitutional Mn positions or increasing the Mn concentration leads to an increase in the remnant magnetization at zero temperature and an almost fully polarized ferromagnetic state.
