Contact forms with large systolic ratio in dimension three

The systolic ratio of a contact form on a closed three-manifold is the quotient of the square of the shortest period of closed Reeb orbits by the contact volume. We show that every co-orientable contact structure on any closed three-manifold is defined by a contact form with arbitrarily large systolic ratio. This shows that the many existing systolic inequalities in Finsler and Riemannian geometry are not purely contact-topological phenomena.

Systems of transversal sections near critical energy levels of Hamiltonian systems in $\mathbb{R}^4$

In this article we study Hamiltonian flows associated to smooth functions $H:\mathbb{R}^4 \to \mathbb{R}$ restricted to energy levels close to critical levels. We assume the existence of a saddle-center equilibrium point $p_c$ in the zero energy level $H^{-1}(0)$. The Hamiltonian function near $p_c$ is assumed to satisfy Moser's normal form and $p_c$ is assumed to lie in a strictly convex singular subset $S_0$ of $H^{-1}(0)$. Then for all $E>0$ small, the energy level $H^{-1}(E)$ contains a subset $S_E$ near $S_0$, diffeomorphic to the closed $3$-ball, which admits a system of transversal sections $\mathcal{F}_E$, called a $2-3$ foliation. $\mathcal{F}_E$ is a singular foliation of $S_E$ and contains two periodic orbits $P_{2,E}\subset \partial S_E$ and $P_{3,E}\subset S_E\setminus \partial S_E$ as binding orbits. $P_{2,E}$ is the Lyapunoff orbit lying in the center manifold of $p_c$, has Conley-Zehnder index $2$ and spans two rigid planes in $\partial S_E$. $P_{3,E}$ has Conley-Zehnder index $3$ and spans a one parameter family of planes in $S_E \setminus \partial S_E$. A rigid cylinder connecting $P_{3,E}$ to $P_{2,E}$ completes $\mathcal{F}_E$. All regular leaves are transverse to the Hamiltonian vector field. The existence of a homoclinic orbit to $P_{2,E}$ in $S_E\setminus \partial S_E$ follows from this foliation.

Elliptic bindings for dynamically convex Reeb flows on the real projective three-space

The first result of this paper is that every contact form on $\mathbb{R} P^3$ sufficiently $C^\infty$-close to a dynamically convex contact form admits an elliptic-parabolic closed Reeb orbit which is $2$-unknotted, has self-linking number $-1/2$ and transverse rotation number in $(1/2,1]$. Our second result implies that any $p$-unknotted periodic orbit with self-linking number $-1/p$ of a dynamically convex Reeb flow on a lens space of order $p$ is the binding of a rational open book decomposition, whose pages are global surfaces of section. As an application we show that in the planar circular restricted three-body problem for energies below the first Lagrange value and large mass ratio, there is a special link consisting of two periodic trajectories for the massless satellite near the smaller primary -- lunar problem -- with the same contact-topological and dynamical properties of the orbits found by Conley in~\cite{conley} for large negative energies. Both periodic trajectories bind rational open book decompositions with disk-like pages which are global surfaces of section. In particular, one of the components is an elliptic-parabolic periodic orbit.

A systolic inequality for geodesic flows on the two-sphere

For a Riemannian metric $g$ on the two-sphere, let $\ell_{\min}(g)$ be the length of the shortest closed geodesic and $\ell_{\max}(g)$ be the length of the longest simple closed geodesic. We prove that if the curvature of $g$ is positive and sufficiently pinched, then the sharp systolic inequalities \[ \ell_{\rm min}(g)^2 \leq π\ {\rm Area}(S^2,g) \leq \ell_{\max}(g)^2, \] hold, and each of these two inequalities is an equality if and only if the metric $g$ is Zoll. The first inequality answers positively a conjecture of Babenko and Balacheff. The proof combines arguments from Riemannian and symplectic geometry.

A dynamical characterization of universally tight lens spaces

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed connected co-orientable contact $3$-manifold $(M,ξ)$ to be a standard lens space based on assumptions on the Reeb flow associated to a defining contact form. Our methods also provide rational global surfaces of section for nondegenerate Reeb flows on $(L(p,q),ξ_{\rm std})$ with prescribed binding orbits.

Persistence of fixed points under rigid perturbations of maps

Let $f:S^1\times [0,1]\to S^1\times [0,1]$ be a real-analytic annulus diffeomorphism which is homotopic to the identity map and preserves an area form. Assume that for some lift $\tilde {f}:\mathbb{R}\times [0,1]\rightarrow \mathbb{R}\times [0,1]$ we have ${\rm Fix}(\tilde{f})=\mathbb{R}\times \{0\}$ and that $\tilde{f}$ positively translates points in $\mathbb{R}\times \{1\}$. Let $\tilde{f}_ε$ be the perturbation of $\tilde{f}$ by the rigid horizontal translation $(x,y)\mapsto (x+ε,y)$. We show that for all $ε>0$ sufficiently small we have ${\rm Fix} (\tilde{f}_ε)=\emptyset $. The proof follows from Kerékjártó's construction of Brouwer lines for orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the plane with no fixed points. This result turns out to be sharp with respect to the regularity assumption: there exists a diffeomorphism $f$ satisfying all the properties above, except that $f$ is not real-analytic but only smooth, so that the above conclusion is false. Such a map is constructed via generating functions.

A Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem for tight Reeb flows on $S^3$

We consider Reeb flows on the tight $3$-sphere admitting a pair of closed orbits forming a Hopf link. If the rotation numbers associated to the transverse linearized dynamics at these orbits fail to satisfy a certain resonance condition then there exist infinitely many periodic trajectories distinguished by their linking numbers with the components of the link. This result admits a natural comparison to the Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem on area-preserving annulus homeomorphisms. An analogous theorem holds on $SO(3)$ and applies to geodesic flows of Finsler metrics on $S^2$.

An almost existence theorem for non-contractible periodic orbits in cotangent bundles

Assume M is a closed connected smooth manifold and H:T^*M->R a smooth proper function bounded from below. Suppose the sublevel set {H =d the level set {H=s} carries a periodic orbit z of the Hamiltonian system (T^*M,ω_0,H) representing α. Examples show that the condition that {H<d} contains M is necessary and almost existence cannot be improved to everywhere existence.

Global properties of tight Reeb flows with applications to Finsler geodesic flows on $S^2$

We show that if a Finsler metric on $S^2$ with reversibility $r$ has flag curvatures $K$ satisfying $(\frac{r}{r+1})^2 <K \leq 1$, then closed geodesics with specific contact-topological properties cannot exist, in particular there are no closed geodesics with precisely one transverse self-intersection point. This is a special case of a more general phenomenon, and other closed geodesics with many self-intersections are also excluded. We provide examples of Randers type, obtained by suitably modifying the metrics constructed by Katok \cite{katok}, proving that this pinching condition is sharp. Our methods are borrowed from the theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves in symplectizations. Finally, we study global dynamical aspects of 3-dimensional energy levels $C^2$-close to $S^3$.
