Confinement and chiral symmetry breaking, one or two critical points?

We study the QCD phase diagram, in particular we study the critical points of the two main QCD phase transitions, confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. Confinement drives chiral symmetry breaking, and, due to the finite quark mass, at small density both transitions are a crossover, while they are a first or second order phase transition in large density. We study the QCD phase diagram with a quark potential model including both confinement and chiral symmetry. This formalism, in the Coulomb gauge hamiltonian formalism of QCD, is presently the only one able to microscopically include both a quark-antiquark confining potential and a vacuum condensate of quark-antiquark pairs. Our order parameters are the Polyakov loop and the quark mass gap. The confining potential is extracted from the Lattice QCD data of the Bielefeld group. We scan the QCD phase diagram for different quark masses, in order to address how the quark masses affect the critical point location in the phase diagram.

The confining potential is extracted from the Lattice QCD data of the Bielefeld group. We address how the quark masses affect the critical point location in the phase diagram.

Bottomonium melting at temperature well above Tc

We fit the lattice QCD data of Kaczmarek et al for the free energy F1 and internal energy U1 with a class of Coulomb, constant and linear potentials, both pure and screened, matching the large distance to the short distance parts of the lattice QCD finite temperature energies. We also include the hyperfine potential in F1 and U1. We detail the bottomonium (and charmonium) binding and the melting temperatures, both for the groundstate and for the excited states, relevant for Hard Probes in Heavy Ion Collisions at LHC, where temperatures well above Tc will be reached, much higher than the temperatures reached in previous Heavy Ion Collisions.

Excited baryons as experimental probes of the quark mass

We observe that excited hadrons provide an opportunity to probe from experiment the power-law running of the quark mass in the mid infrared, while the condition m(k)<k remains valid. A relatively clean analysis is possible for the maximum spin excitations of the Delta baryons, analogous to the yrast states in nuclei. Such states are accessible at current experimental facilities such as ELSA and Jlab.

Lattice QCD and Three-Body Exotic Systems in the static limit

The static potentials for quark-antiquark-gluon and 3-gluon systems are computed with lattice QCD methods. For the quark-antiquark-gluon hybrid meson the static potential is obtained for different values of the angle between the quark-gluon and antiquark-gluon segments. The simulations support the formation of an adjoint string for small angles, while for large angles, the adjoint string is replaced by two fundamental strings connecting the gluon and the quarks. For the 3-gluon glueball, we discuss the corresponding Wilson loops and show that the gluons are connected by fundamental strings when the gluons are far apart.

Parity doubling in the high baryon spectrum: near-degenerate three-quark quartets

We report on the first calculation of excited baryons with a chirally symmetric Hamiltonian, modeled after Coulomb gauge QCD (or upgraded from the Cornell meson potential model to a field theory in all of Fock-space) showing the insensitivity to chiral symmetry breaking. As has recently been understood, this leads to doubling between two hadrons of equal spin and opposite parity. As a novelty we show that three-quark, for example Delta states, group into quartets with two states of each parity, all four states having equal angular momentum J. Diagonalizing the chiral charge expressed in terms of quarks we show that the quartet is slightly split into two parity doublets by the tensor force, all splittings decreasing to zero high in the spectrum. Our specific calculation is for the family of maximum-spin excitations of the Delta baryon. We provide a model estimate of the experimental accuracy needed to establish Chiral Symmetry Restoration in the high spectrum. We suggest that a measurement of masses of high-partial wave Delta resonances with an accuracy of 50 MeV should be sufficient to unambiguously establish the approximate degeneracy, and test the concept of running quark mass in the infrared.

Static potential for the quark-antiquark-gluon hybrid system in lattice QCD

The static gluon-quark-antiquark interaction is investigated using lattice QCD techniques. A Wilson loop adequate to the static hybrid three-body system is developed and, using a $24^3 \times 48$ periodic lattice with $β= 6.2$, the potential energy of the system is measured for different geometries. For the medium range behaviour, when the quarks are far apart, we find a string tension which is compatible with two fundamental strings. On the other hand, when the quark and antiquark are nearby, the string tension is larger than two fundamental strings and is compatible with the Casimir scaling.

Confinement of monopole field lines in a superconductor at T=/=0

We apply the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations to the confinement of a monopole-antimonopole pair in a superconductor. This is related to the problem of a quark-antiquark pair bound by a confining string, consisting of a colour-electric flux tube, dual to the magnetic vortex of type-II superconductors. We study the confinement of the field lines due to the superconducting state and calculate the effective potential between the two monopoles. At short distances the potential is Coulombic and at large distances the potential is linear, as previously determined solving the Ginzburg-Landau equations. The magnetic field lines and the string tension are also studied as a function of the temperature $T$. Because we take into account the explicit fermionic degrees of freedom, this work may open new perspectives to the breaking of chiral symmetry or to colour superconductivity.

The BES f_0(1810): a new glueball candidate

We analyze the f_0(1810) state recently observed by the BES collaboration via radiative J/ψdecay to a resonant ϕωspectrum and confront it with DM2 data and glueball theory. The DM2 group only measured ωωdecays and reported a pseudoscalar but no scalar resonance in this mass region. A rescattering mechanism from the open flavored KKbar decay channel is considered to explain why the resonance is only seen in the flavor asymmetric ωϕbranch along with a discussion of positive C parity charmonia decays to strengthen the case for preferred open flavor glueball decays. We also calculate the total glueball decay width to be roughly 100 MeV, in agreement with the narrow, newly found f_0, and smaller than the expected estimate of 200-400 MeV. We conclude that this discovered scalar hadron is a solid glueball candidate and deserves further experimental investigation, especially in the K-Kbar channel. Finally we comment on other, but less likely, possible assignments for this state.

Vorticity and magnetic shielding in a type-II superconductor

We study in detail, solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, the magnetic field, supercurrent and order parameter profiles originated by a solenoid or magnetic whisker inserted in a type-II superconductor. We consider solutions of different vorticities, n, in the various cases. The results confirm the connection between the vorticity, the internal currents and the boundstates in a self-consistent way. The number of boundstates is given by the vorticity of the phase of the gap function as in the case with no external solenoid. In the limiting case of an infinitely thin solenoid, like a Dirac string, the solution is qualitatively different. The quasiparticle spectrum and wave functions are a function of n-n_ext, where n_ext is the vorticity of the solenoid. The flux is in all cases determined by the vorticity of the gap function.

Glueball and hybrid mass and decay with string tension below Casimir scaling

Lattice computations with excited SU(3) representations suggest that the confining gluon-gluon interaction complies with the Casimir scaling. The constituent gluon models have also been assuming the Casimir scaling. Inspired in type-II superconductors, we explore a new scenario for the gluon-gluon interaction where the adjoint string is replaced by a pair of fundamental strings, resulting in a factor of 2, smaller than 9/4. To test our proposal we construct a simple constituent gluon model, extrapolated from the funnel potential for quarkonium, and apply it to compute the wave-function of glueballs and of hybrid gluelumps. From the decay widths of quarkonium, we also extrapolate the decay widths of the glueballs and hybrid gluelumps. Our predictions apply to charmonia, lightonia, glueballs and hybrid gluelumps with large angular momentum.

Soft gluons are heavy and rowdy

We study dynamical mass generation in pure Yang-Mills theory and report on a recently developed ansatz that exactly solves the tower of Dyson-Schwinger equations in Landau gauge at low Euclidean momentum, featuring enhanced gluon-gluon vertices, a finite ghost-gluon vertex in agreement with an old argument of Taylor, and an IR suppressed gluon propagator. This ansatz reinforces arguments in favor of the concept of a gluon mass gap at low momentum (although the minimum of the gluon's dispersion relation is not at zero momentum). As an application, we have computed the spectrum of oddballs, three-gluon glueballs with negative parity and C-parity. The three body problem is variationally solved employing the color density-density interaction of Coulomb gauge QCD with a static Cornell potential. Like their even glueball counterparts, oddballs fall on Regge trajectories with similar slope to the pomeron. However their intercept at t=0 is smaller than the omega Regge trajectory and therefore the odderon may only be visible in experimental searches (for example at BNL) with higher -t than conducted to date at DESY.

Oddballs and a Low Odderon Intercept

We report an odderon Regge trajectory emerging from a field theoretical Coulomb gauge QCD model for the odd signature JPC (P=C= -1) glueball states (oddballs). The trajectory intercept is clearly smaller than the pomeron and even the omega trajectory's intercept which provides an explanation for the nonobservation of the odderon in high energy scattering data. To further support this result we compare to glueball lattice data and also perform calculations with an alternative model based upon an exact Hamiltonian diagonalization for three constituent gluons.

Analytical approach to chiral symmetry breaking in Minkowsky space

The mass gap equation for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is studied directly in Minkowsky space. In hadronic physics, spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is crucial to generate a constituent mass for the quarks, and to produce the Partially Conserved Axial Current theorems, including a small mass for the pion. Here a class of finite kernels is used, expanded in Yukawa interactions. The Schwinger-Dyson equation is solved with an analytical approach. This improves the state of the art of solving the mass gap equation, which is usually solved with the equal-time approximation or with the Euclidean approximation. The mapping from the Euclidean space to the Minkowsky space is also illustrated.

Analytic proof that the Quark Model complies with the PCAC theorems

The Weinberg theorem, the Adler self consistency zero, the Goldberger and Treiman relation and the Gell-Mann Oakes and Renner relation are proved analytically in full detail for Quark Models. These proofs are independent of the particular quark-quark interaction, and they are displayed with Feynman diagrams in a compact notation. I assume the ladder truncation, which is natural in the Quark Model, and also detail the diagrams that must be included in each relation. Off mass shell and finite size effects are included in the quark-antiquark pion Bethe Salpeter vertices. The axial and vector Ward identities, for the quark propagator and for the ladder, exactly cancel any model dependence.

Microscopic derivation of pion-nucleon and pion-Delta scattering lengths

A general expression for the $π-N$ and $π-Δ$ scattering lengths is derived in the framework of a microscopic calculation. Annihilation, negative energy wave-functions and spontaneous chiral symmetry are included consistently. The point-like limit is used to calculate the scattering lengths.
