Equivalent Quantum Circuits

Quantum algorithms and protocols are often presented as quantum circuits for a better understanding. We give a list of equivalence rules which can help in the analysis and design of quantum circuits. As example applications we study quantum teleportation and dense coding protocols in terms of a simple XOR swapping circuit and give an intuitive picture of a basic gate teleportation circuit.

Repeaters in relativistic communications

The communication efficiency between a transmitter and a receiver is affected by motion and the presence of gravitational fields. We study the effect of regenerating the signal in intermediate repeaters in different relativistic scenarios and comment the differences with respect to nonrelativistic repeaters.

Secure communication in the twin paradox

The channel capacity between two users is affected by relativistic effects. Under the presence of a fixed noise at the receiver, there appears an asymmetry between "slowly aging" and "fast aging" observers which can be used to have private communication transmission. We discuss some models for users inside gravitational wells and in the twin paradox scenario.

Universal quantum computation with the Orbital Angular Momentum of a single photon

We prove that a single photon with quantum data encoded in its orbital angular momentum can be manipulated with simple optical elements to provide any desired quantum computation. We will show how to build any quantum unitary operator using beamsplitters, phase shifters, holograms and an extraction gate based on quantum interrogation. The advantages and challenges of these approach are then discussed, in particular the problem of the readout of the results.

Quantum multiplexing with optical coherent states

In this paper, we propose a novel quantum multiple access technique based on optical coherent states. The information of several coherent state optical qubits is combined into a single qudit, which is the superposition of almost orthogonal coherent states. The original information is encoded into a new Hilbert space with the help of a quantum multiplexer (QMUX) and then recovered at the other end with a quantum demultiplexer (QDEMUX). We introduce the optical tools that complete the coherence state quantum computation model and give the desired circuits. The proposed system can admit a number of users above the optimal limit at the cost of a degradation of the transmitted data. In this and some other aspects, it can be regarded as a quantum analogue of classical Code Division Multiple Access techniques.

Quantum interrogation logic gates

Quantum interrogation can be used as a basic resource for quantum information. This paper presents its applications to entanglement creation and to optical quantum computation. The starting point will be a photon to particle quantum interrogation CZ gate, from which three families of optical CNOT gates will be derived. These gates are nondestructive and can work with probabilities arbitrarily close to 1. A possible experimental implementation with atomic ensembles is also discussed.

Quantum Multiplexing with the Orbital Angular Momentum of light

The orbital angular momentum, OAM, of photons offers a suitable support to carry the quantum data of multiple users. We present two novel optical setups that send the information of n quantum communication parties through the same free-space optical link. Those qubits can be sent simultaneously and share path, wavelength and polarization without interference, increasing the communication capacity of the system. The first solution, a qubit combiner, merges n channels into the same link, which transmits n independent photons. The second solution, the OAM multiplexer, uses CNOT gates to transfer the information of n optical channels to a single photon. Additional applications of the multiplexer circuits, such as quantum arithmetic, as well as connections to OAM sorting are discussed.

Bosonic CNOT gates with Quantum Interrogation

We put forward a new CNOT gate scheme with atoms and ions based on quantum interrogation and a bosonic particle extension of the models of linear optics quantum computation. We show how the possibility of particle collision can provide the strong interaction that is needed for universal quantum gates. Two atom optics proposals are provided. Unlike previous schemes, these gates are at the same time nondestructive, valid for arbitrary inputs and can work with a probability as close to unity as desired in the lossless case. Data is encoded into position modes and the gates only require basic atom optics elements, which gives potentially simpler quantum computer implementations.

Quantum Multiplexing for Quantum Computer Networks

In communication networks many different channels must share a limited amount of resources. In order to allow for multiple simultaneous communications, multiple access techniques are routinely employed. With quantum communication, it is possible to share a new kind of resource. All of the system channels can be accommodated into a single channel in a larger Hilbert space. In the scheme, a single line combines the information of all the users, and, at the receiver, the original quantum channels are recovered. The given multiplexer/demultiplexer circuit can perform this n qubits to qudit transformation. Connections with superdense coding and classical multiple access schemes are discussed.

Universal Quantum Computation with Shutter Logic

We show that universal quantum logic can be achieved using only linear optics and a quantum shutter device. With these elements, we design a quantum memory for any number of qubits and a CNOT gate which are the basis of a universal quantum computer. An interaction-free model for a quantum shutter is given.

Quantum Interrogation with particles

Interaction-free measurement and quantum interrogation schemes can help in the detection of particles without interacting with them in a classical sense. We present a density matrix study of a quantum interrogation system designed for particles that need not to be perfectly absorptive and compare the results to those of the usual setup.

An Interaction-Free Quantum Shutter

We give a proposal for the physical implementation of a quantum shutter. This shutter is a mechanism able to close the passage of light through a slit when present. As it must be a quantum mechanical object, able to show superposition, interesting quantum effects are observed. Finally, we review some applications of the quantum shutter to build quantum memories and a CNOT gate.

Delayed commutation in quantum computer networks

In the same way that classical computer networks connect and enhance the capabilities of classical computers, quantum networks can combine the advantages of quantum information and communications. We propose a non-classical network element, a delayed commutation switch, that can solve the problem of switching time in packet switching networks. With the help of some local ancillary qubits and superdense codes we can route the information after part of it has left the network node.
