Multiplicity of surface polariton configurations in bi-isotropic media with anomalous Hall current

In this work, we investigate surface polaritons (SPs) arising at the interface between a simple dielectric and a bi-isotropic medium, in the lossless regime and in the presence of small losses. For the former, non-Dyakonov surface polaritons can arise for positive permittivities and magnetoelectric parameters. General restrictions on the permittivities and bi-isotropic parameter (existence conditions) are derived. For the latter, the effect of small losses is considered, and the characteristic surface plasmon-polariton lengths are discussed. The propagation length can exhibit a local maximum for specific values of the magnetoelectric parameter, an unusual new behavior that can be regarded as a signature of these chiral surface polaritons. Surface waves in an interface involving a bi- isotropic medium with an anomalous Hall effect (AHE) are also examined. Multiple configurations for their occurrence are obtained, revealing a richer scenario with distinct regimes of propagation and coexistence in the parameter space. The presence of a non-null AHE contribution creates a magnetoelectric range for which the surface wave propagation is forbidden, providing an additional signature of surface-polariton propagation in bi-isotropic media with an AHE contribution.

Kerr rotation signature of nonlinear Maxwell electrodynamics under a uniform electromagnetic background

Nonlinear electrodynamics naturally arises in quantum field theory, where the electromagnetic vacuum behaves as an effective nonlinear optical medium, leading to phenomena such as vacuum birefringence and dichroism. Among the recently proposed models, modified Maxwell electrodynamics (ModMax) stands out as a conformally invariant nonlinear extension of Maxwell theory that preserves the fundamental symmetries of classical electrodynamics while predicting nontrivial optical effects. In this work, we investigate optical effects in ModMax electrodynamics in the presence of an external electromagnetic field. Considering uniform and constant magnetic and electric backgrounds, the solutions for the refractive indices are revisited. Using these results, we obtain the propagating modes and the phase shift (birefringence) for plane wave solutions in the presence of a pure magnetic background field. Afterwards, we investigate the Goos-Hänchen effect considering the interface between a simple dielectric and a medium whose electromagnetic response tensors are ruled by the ModMax electrodynamics. Further, based on the general reflection problem, we discuss the complex Kerr rotation with both the electric (E) and magnetic (B) background fields, considering two main cases: i) $B > E$ and ii) $E > B$. Our findings indicate that the $γ$ parameter and the ratios (B/E) and (E/B) play a central role in describing the Kerr signals (rotation and ellipticity) of systems with optical effects induced by nonlinear electromagnetic interactions.

Tight bounds on the Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw parameters using Fast Radio Bursts

We investigate the arrival time and the Faraday rotation of extragalactic electromagnetic signals from fast radio bursts (FRBs) propagating through chiral cosmic media within the framework of Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw (MCFJ) electrodynamics. By treating the interstellar medium as a cold, ionized chiral plasma, we derive the time delay between two traveling signals, expressing it in terms of modified dispersion measures (DMs) containing chiral contributions. The Faraday rotation angle is then written in terms of modified rotation measures (RMs). By combining the DMs and redshift data from a set of FRBs, we obtain constraints on the chiral parameter magnitude at the order of $10^{-26}$--$10^{-24}$ GeV. Using the Faraday rotation formulae and RM measurements, upper bounds as stringent as $10^{-43}$ GeV on the MCFJ parameters are also obtained.

Hypothesis of a bi-isotropic-like plasma permeating the interstellar space

In this work, we study the propagation of electromagnetic waves in a magnetized chiral plasma that pervades the interstellar space. The Maxwell equations, supplemented by bi-isotropic-like constitutive relations, are rewritten to describe a cold, uniform, and collisionless plasma model that yields new collective electromagnetic modes for distinct pairs of refractive indices associated with right- and left-handed circularly polarized waves. We have investigated the optical behavior through the rotatory power (RP) and dichroism coefficient, reporting that the finite chiral parameter induces double RP sign reversal, an exotic optical signature that takes place in chiral dielectrics and rotating plasmas. In the low-frequency regime, a modified propagating helicon with right-handed circular polarization is obtained. Next, supposing that the interstellar medium behaves as a chiral bi-isotropic-like cold plasma, we employ Astrophysical data of radio pulsars to achieve upper limits on the magnetoelectric parameters magnitude. In particular, by using dispersion measure and rotation measure data from five pulsars, we constrain the magnitude of the chiral parameter to the order of $10^{-16}$ and $10^{-22}$, respectively.

Bi-isotropic effects on hybrid surface polaritons in bilayer configurations

In this work, we investigate the bi-isotropic effects in the formation and tunability of hybrid surface polaritons in bilayer configurations. We consider a heterostructure composed of a medium with bi-isotropic constitutive relations and an AFM layer. Using the transfer matrix formalism, we derive general expressions for the dispersion relations of surface polaritonic modes, including the dependence on the bi-isotropic parameter, and analyze their coupling to bulk magnon-polaritons. As an illustration of application, we consider a heterostructure formed with Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ interfaced with antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials that support terahertz-frequency magnons, specifically Cr$_{2}$O$_{3}$ and FeF$_{2}$. In the strong bi-isotropic coupling regime, the surface Dirac plasmon--phonon--magnon polariton (DPPMP) dispersion undergoes a pronounced redshift, accompanied by suppression of the characteristic anticrossing between the Dirac plasmon and the phonon. This effect, observed in all AFM materials considered, suggests a weakening of the hybrid interaction, possibly due to saturation or detuning mechanisms induced by increased $α$. Furthermore, increasing the Fermi energy of the topological insulator enhances the surface plasmon and phonon contributions, inducing a blueshift of the DPPP branches and bringing them closer to resonance with the magnon mode, thereby increasing the hybridization strength. Intriguingly, this redshift partially compensates the blueshift induced by a higher Fermi level, restoring the system to a weak-coupling regime analogous to that observed at lower Fermi energies. Our findings reveal that both the Fermi level and the bi-isotropic response offer independent and complementary control parameters for tuning the strength of light--magnon coupling in TI/AFM heterostructures, with potential implications for reconfigurable THz spintronic and photonic devices.

Constraining CPT-odd electromagnetic chiral parameters with pulsar timing

The arrival time of electromagnetic signals traveling in chiral cosmic media is investigated in the context of Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics. Considering the interstellar medium (ISM) as a cold, ionized, chiral plasma, we derive the time delay between two traveling signals, expressed in terms of a modified dispersion measure (DM) which receives additional contribution from the chiral parameters. Faraday rotation angle is also addressed in this chiral plasma scenario, yielding modified rotation measures (RM). Using DMs data from five pulsars, we establish constraints on the chiral parameter magnitude at the order of $10^{-23}$ -- $10^{-22}$ GeV. On the other hand, the Faraday rotation retrieved from RM measurements implied upper constraints as tight as $10^{-36}$ GeV.

Double rotatory power reversal, continuous Kerr angle, and enhanced reflectance in bi-isotropic media with anomalous Hall current

We investigate the optical properties of bi-isotropic materials under the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of axion electrodynamics. Four refractive indices associated with circularly polarized waves are achieved, implying circular birefringence with rotatory power endowed with double sign reversal, an exotic optical signature for chiral dielectrics. The Kerr rotation and ellipticity are analyzed, with an unusual observation of a giant rotation angle deprived of discontinuity. Anomalous enhanced reflectance (R greater than unity) is also reported, associated with negative refraction stemming from the anomalous transport properties. These effects constitute the singular optical signature of a nonequilibrium bi-isotropic medium with the AHE.

Anomalous increasing super reflectance in chiral matter

Magnetic and anomalous Hall conductivities induce anomalous transport features and novel optical phenomena in chiral systems. Here, we investigate reflection properties on the surface of a medium ruled by axion electrodynamics, which effectively describes optical aspects of Weyl semimetals. We show that these chiral media can manifest anomalous reflectance (R greater than unity) for some frequency windows, depending on the signs of the two involved conductivities. Such a reflectance can increase with the frequency, being always greater than 1 in certain frequency bands. We also examine the complex Kerr angles at normal incidence on the chiral medium. Giant Kerr angle is observed within the absorption window, while the Kerr ellipticity may be used to determine the relative sign of the magnetic conductivity.

Optical effects in unmagnetized cold plasmas by a chiral axion factor

Unmagnetized cold plasma modes are investigated in the context of the chiral Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw (MCJF) electrodynamics, where the axion chiral factor acts retrieving some typical properties of magnetized plasmas. The Maxwell equations are rewritten for a cold, uniform, and collisionless fluid plasma model, allowing us to determine the dispersion relation, new refractive indices, and propagating modes. We find four distinct refractive indices modified by the purely timelike CFJ background that plays the magnetic conductivity chiral parameter role associated with right-circularly polarized (RCP) and left-circularly polarized (LCP) waves. For each refractive index, the propagation and absorption zones are determined and illustrated for some specific parameter values. Modified RCP and LCP helicons are found in the low-frequency regime. The optical behavior is investigated, revealing that the chiral factor induces birefringence, measured in terms of the rotatory power (RP). The dichroism coefficient is carried out for the absorbing zones. The negative refraction zones may enhance the involved rotatory power, yielding RP sign reversion, a feature of rotating plasmas and MCFJ chiral plasmas. Charge density oscillations and Langmuir waves are also discussed, revealing no modified dispersion relation due to the chiral axion factor.

Anisotropic cold plasma modes in chiral vector Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics

In this work, we study the propagation and absorption of plasma waves in the context of the Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw (MCFJ) electrodynamics with a purely spacelike background playing the role of the anomalous Hall conductivity, concerning the anomalous Hall current. Such a current is also found in an axion field which increases linearly with a space coordinate. The Maxwell equations are rewritten for a cold, uniform, and collisionless fluid plasma model, allowing us to determine the new refractive indices and propagating modes. The analysis begins for propagation along the magnetic axis, examined in the cases of chiral vectors parallel and orthogonal to the magnetic field. Two distinct refractive indices (associated with right-handed circularly polarized [RCP] and left-handed circularly polarized [LCP] waves) are obtained and the associated propagation and absorption zones are determined. The low-frequency regime is discussed and we obtain RCP and LCP helicons. We scrutinize optical effects, such as birefringence and dichroism, and observe rotatory power sign reversion, a property of chiral MCFJ plasmas. We also examine the case of transversal propagation in the direction orthogonal to the magnetic field, providing much more involved results.

Optical reflection signature of an axion dielectric with magnetic current

In this work, we investigate the reflection properties on the interface between an ordinary dielectric medium and a dielectric supporting a magnetic current (equivalent to a dielectric governed by axion electrodynamics). Considering the usual Maxwell equations and constitutive relations, we derive the general Fresnel coefficients for reflection for an incident wave with $s$ and $p$ polarization, assuming an isotropic magnetic current on a dielectric substrate. We determine all total internal reflection and critical angles (Brewster angles) conditions, which are given by strict relations between all relevant electromagnetic quantities of the system and the frequency. For $s$- and $p$-polarized incident waves, total internal reflection can occur under certain conditions on the constitutive parameters (for each propagating mode) at specific frequency windows and certain incidence angle intervals. All possible conditions to define critical angles for null reflection are determined. This scenario allows polarization changes by reflection. Considering a $p$-polarized incident wave, the frequency and the Brewster angle, allowing null reflection for both propagating modes, are determined. The Goos-Hänchen shift and the complex Kerr rotation are also evaluated. The Kerr ellipticity angle presents a frequency-dependent behavior, also reported in Weyl semimetals, having maximum values $η_{Kerr}=\pm π/4$ for specific values of frequency, which may work as a signature of this axion chiral dielectric.

Optical properties and energy propagation in a dielectric medium supporting magnetic current

We examine a dielectric medium supporting a magnetic current in connection with optical properties and energy propagation. The dispersion relations, propagating modes, and some optical effects are examined for isotropic and anisotropic magnetic conductivity tensors, with the latter ones implying nonreciprocal permittivities. The eigenvalues of the effective permittivity are carried out and associated with the optical symmetries (uniaxial, biaxial) and the subjacent crystal systems. Aspects of electromagnetic energy transport for such systems are also discussed, with the group and energy velocities being presented and carried out for all the particular cases addressed. Our results suggest that a dielectric supporting magnetic current breaks the usual equivalence between group velocity and energy velocity that holds in a nonabsorbing medium, while establishing the equivalence between them in an effective absorbing scenario, two unexpected behaviors.

Classical electrodynamics as a tool to examine optical effects of chiral dielectrics and media with magnetic conductivity

We discuss how classical electromagnetic techniques are useful to describe optical effects in conventional and chiral dielectric systems endowed with optical activity. Starting from the Maxwell equations and constitutive relations of the medium, we obtain the wave equation (for the electric field) that yields the refractive indices and the corresponding propagating modes that define the electromagnetic wave polarization. This procedure is employed for bi-isotropic and bi-anisotropic dielectrics, allowing us to determine birefringence, a manifestation of the space or time inversion breaking, typical of the chiral media. Such a method can also be applied for axion electrodynamics and a dielectric supporting an isotropic chiral magnetic current, similar to the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME). For a diagonal magnetic conductivity, two distinct refractive indices are found, associated with left circularly polarized (LCP) and right circularly polarized (RCP) waves, and yielding circular birefringence (evaluated in terms of the optical rotatory power). Additionally, the scenario of a bi-isotropic medium endowed with isotropic magnetic current is examined, where a rotatory power marked by sign reversal may work as an optical signature of this particular system.

A Drude-Lorentz dielectric in the presence of a magnetic current density

The dispersive propagation and absorption in the domain of a Drude-Lorentz dielectric modified by a magnetic current are classically investigated, taking as the starting point the Drude electric permittivity, in connection with the chiral magnetic effect. Using standard electromagnetic methods, the dispersion relations and refractive indices are evaluated and discussed, as well as the group and the energy velocities. We consider three configurations for the magnetic conductivity tensor: isotropic, antisymmetric, and symmetric. In all these cases, we carry out the group velocity and the energy velocity, for investigating the properties of signal propagation. We observe that the isotropic magnetic conductivity enhances the signal propagation at low and intermediary frequencies, while the symmetric and antisymmetric conductivity severely constrains the wave propagation in these frequency windows.

Cold plasma waves in the chiral Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics

In this work, we study the propagation and absorption of plasma waves in the chiral Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw (MCJF) electrodynamics. The Maxwell equations are rewritten for a cold, uniform, and collisionless fluid plasma model, allowing us to determine the new refractive indices and propagating modes. The cases of propagation parallel and orthogonal to the magnetic field are examined considering a purely timelike CFJ background that plays the role of the magnetic conductivity chiral parameter. The collective electromagnetic modes are associated with four distinct refractive indices associated with right-circularly polarized and left-circularly polarized waves. For each index, the propagation and absorption zones are illustrated for some specific parameter values. In low-frequency regime, we have obtained modified helicons with right- and left-circularly polarizations. The optical behavior is investigated by means of the rotatory power (RP) and dichroism coefficient. The existence of a negative refraction zone enhances the rotatory power. It is also observed RP sign reversal, a feature of rotating plasmas.

Lorentz-violating electrodynamics in continuous matter

We review the propagation of electromagnetic waves in continuous matter in the presence of Lorentz-violating terms. First, we briefly discuss classical electrodynamics with regard to optical properties of a dielectric medium exhibiting the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME). Such a medium can be modeled by Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw (MCFJ) theory. Second, we describe the impact of CPT-odd terms of mass dimensions three and five, respectively, on electromagnetic propagation in continuous matter. Birefringence and absorption are analyzed in the scenarios investigated. Our findings provide new insights into the interplay between classical field theory and optical effects in matter.

Symmetric and antisymmetric constitutive tensors for bi-isotropic and bi-anisotropic media

The Maxwell equations and the constitutive relations describe the classical propagation of electromagnetic waves in continuous matter. Here, we investigate the effects stemming from extended constitutive relations on the propagation of waves in bi-isotropic and bi-anisotropic media using a classical general approach based on the evaluation of dispersion relations and refractive indices. For the bi-anisotropic media, we specify two classes of magnetoelectric parameters represented by symmetric and antisymmetric tensors. The three cases examined have provided real and distinct refractive indices for two propagating modes, which implies birefringence. The propagating modes were also carried out in all cases. The anisotropy or birefringence effect, given by the rotatory power or phase difference, was evaluated in terms of the magnetoelectric parameters of the theory in each case. The propagation orthogonal to the vectors used to parametrize the symmetric and antisymmetric magnetoelectric tensors is described by distinct modes, representing a route to identify the kind of bi-anisotropic medium examined. The group velocity and Poynting vector were also evaluated for all the cases examined to discuss the energy propagation in these anisotropic media.

Rotatory power reversal induced by magnetic-current in bi-isotropic media

Bi-isotropic media constitute a proper scenario for scrutinizing optical effects stemming from magnetoelectric parameters. Chiral magnetic current is a macroscopic effect arising from the chiral magnetic effect that enriches the phenomenology of a classical dielectric medium. This work examines optical aspects of bi-isotropic media in the presence of magnetic conductivity. The full isotropic scenario manifests circular birefringence described by a dispersive rotatory power that changes sign at a given frequency. For a bi-isotropic medium with antisymmetric magnetic conductivity, an intricate dispersive rotatory power is attained, supplied with sign reversal as well. This scenario also indicates a handedness reversion of the medium, an unusual property in dielectrics, which may work as a signature of bi-isotropic media supporting chiral magnetic current.
