Homotopy of representations up to homotopy

We propose a general definition of morphism of representations up to homotopy of Lie algebroids, which is be mandated by the requirement that taking cohomology with coefficients in a representation up to homotopy behave functorially. With this definition in place, we show that such representations behave in a similar way to honest representations as far as homotopy invariance of cohomology and local triviality of smooth families are concerned, and for essentially the same reasons as in the classical case.

Concurring reduction schemes for Dirac structures

The notion of \emph{concurrence} was recently proposed as the natural compatibility relation between Dirac structures, generalizing the commutativity of two Poisson structures. We address the question of when a reduction scheme -- that is, a way to induce a Dirac structure on a quotient of a submanifold -- respects this relation. After characterizing the minimal scheme of \emph{Dirac reduction}, we prove that two concurring Dirac structures have concurring reductions whenever they share a common \emph{witness}, extending to Dirac geometry the reduction of the Marsden-Ra\cb{t}iu theorem. Two procedures for constructing such common witnesses are given, the second being the Dirac counterpart of Magri's original recipe in bihamiltonian geometry. Examples drawn from Hamiltonian actions, Dirac-Nijenhuis manifolds, and complex Dirac structures conclude the paper and illustrate our methods.

Dirac products and concurring Dirac structures

We discuss in this note two dual canonical operations on Dirac structures $L$ and $R$ -- the \emph{tangent product} $L \star R$ and the \emph{cotangent product} $L \circledast R$. Our first result gives an explicit description of the leaves of $L \star R$ in terms of those of $L$ and $R$, surprisingly ruling out the pathologies which plague general ``induced Dirac structures''. In contrast to the tangent product, the more novel contangent product $L \circledast R$ need not be Dirac even if smooth. When it is, we say that $L$ and $R$ \emph{concur}. Concurrence captures commuting Poison structures, refines the \emph{Dirac pairs} of Dorfman and Kosmann-Schwarzbach, and it is our proposal as the natural notion of ``compatibility'' between Dirac structures. The rest of the paper is devoted to illustrating the usefulness of tangent- and cotangent products in general, and the notion of concurrence in particular. Dirac products clarify old constructions in Poisson geometry, characterize Dirac structures which can be pushed forward by a smooth map, and mandate a version of a local normal form. Magri and Morosi's $P\Omega$-condition and Vaisman's notion of two-forms complementary to a Poisson structures are found to be instances of concurrence, as is the setting for the Frobenius-Nirenberg theorem. We conclude the paper with an interpretation in the style of Magri and Morosi of generalized complex structures which concur with their conjugates.

Coregular submanifolds and Poisson submersions

We analyze \emph{submersions with Poisson fibres}. These are submersions whose total space carries a Poisson structure, on which the ambient Poisson structure pulls back, as a Dirac structure, to Poisson structures on each individual fibre. Our ``Poisson-Dirac viewpoint'' is prompted by natural examples of Poisson submersions with Poisson fibers -- in toric geometry and Poisson-Lie groups -- whose analysis was not possible using the existing tools in the Poisson literature. The first part of the paper studies the Poisson-Dirac perspective of inducing Poisson structures on submanifolds. This is a rich landscape, in which subtle behaviours abound -- as illustrated by a surprising ``jumping phenomenon'' concerning the complex relation between the induced and the ambient symplectic foliations, which we discovered here. These pathologies, however, are absent from the well-behaved and abundant class of \emph{coregular} submanifolds, with which we are mostly concerned here. The second part of the paper studies Poisson submersions with Poisson fibres -- the natural Poisson generalization of flat symplectic bundles. These Poisson submersions have coregular Poisson-Dirac fibres, and behave functorially with respect to such submanifolds. We discuss the subtle collective behavior of the Poisson fibers of such Poisson fibrations, and explain their relation to pencils of Poisson structures. The third and final part applies the theory developed to Poisson submersions with Poisson fibres which arise in Lie theory. We also show that such submersions are a convenient setting for the associated bundle construction, and we illustrate this by producing new Poisson structures with a finite number of symplectic leaves. Some of the points in the paper being fairly new, we illustrate the many fine issues that appear with an abundance of (counter-)examples.

Normal forms for principal Poisson Hamiltonian spaces

We prove a normal form theorem for principal Hamiltonian actions on Poisson manifolds around the zero locus of the moment map. The local model is the generalization to Poisson geometry of the classical minimal coupling construction from symplectic geometry of Sternberg and Weinstein. Further, we show that the result implies that the quotient Poisson manifold is linearizable, and we show how to extend the normal form to other values of the moment map.

Morita Invariance of Intrinsic Characteristic Classes of Lie Algebroids

In this note, we prove that intrinsic characteristic classes of Lie algebroids - which in degree one recover the modular class - behave functorially with respect to arbitrary transverse maps, and in particular are weak Morita invariants. In the modular case, this result appeared in [Kosmann-Schwarzbach Y., Laurent-Gengoux C., Weinstein A., Transform. Groups 13 (2008), 727-755], and with a connectivity assumption which we here show to be unnecessary, it appeared in [Crainic M., Comment. Math. Helv. 78 (2003), 681-721] and [Ginzburg V.L., J. Symplectic Geom. 1 (2001), 121-169].

Submersions by Lie algebroids

In this note, we examine the bundle picture of the pullback construction of Lie algebroids. The notion of submersions by Lie algebroids is introduced, which leads to a new proof of the local normal form for lie algebroid transversals of [Bursztyn et al., Crelle, 2017], and which we use to deduce that Lie algebroids transversals concentrate all local cohomology. The locally trivial version of submersions by Lie algebroids $\mathfrak{S}$ is then discussed, and we show that this notion is equivalent to the existence of a complete Ehresmann connection for $\mathfrak{S}$, extending the main result in [del Hoyo, Indag. Math. 2016]. Finally, we show that locally trivial version of submersions by Lie algebroids gives rise to a system of local coefficients, which is an integral part of a version of the homotopy invariance of de Rham cohomology in the context of Lie algebroids, and we apply such local systems to extend the localization theorem of [Chen et al. 2006].

On dual pairs in Dirac Geometry

In this note we discuss dual pairs in Dirac geometry. We show that this notion appears naturally when studying the problem of pushing forward a Dirac structure along a surjective submersion, and we prove a Dirac-theoretic version of Libermann's theorem from Poisson geometry. Our main result is an explicit construction of strong self-dual pairs for Dirac structures. This theorem not only recovers the global construction of symplectic realizations from [Crainic-Marcut 2011], but allows for a more conceptual understanding of it, yielding a simpler and more natural proof. As an application of the main theorem, we present a different approach to the recent normal form theorem around Dirac transversals from [Bursztyn-Lima-Meinrenken 2016].

The homology class of a Poisson transversal

This note is devoted to the study of the homology class of a compact Poisson transversal in a Poisson manifold. For specific classes of Poisson structures, such as unimodular Poisson structures and Poisson manifolds with closed leaves, we prove that all their compact Poisson transversals represent non-trivial homology classes, generalizing the symplectic case. We discuss several examples in which this property does not hold, as well as a weaker version of this property, which holds for log-symplectic structures. Finally, we extend our results to Dirac geometry.

The Normal Form Theorem around Poisson Transversals

We prove a normal form theorem for Poisson structures around Poisson transversals (also called cosymplectic submanifolds), which simultaneously generalizes Weinstein's symplectic neighborhood theorem from symplectic geometry and Weinstein's splitting theorem. Our approach turns out to be essentially canonical, and as a byproduct, we obtain an equivariant version of the latter theorem.

A note on symplectic topology of $b$-manifolds

A Poisson manifold $(M^{2n},\p)$ is $b$-symplectic if $\bigwedge^n\p$ is transverse to the zero section. In this paper we apply techniques native to Symplectic Topology to address questions pertaining to $b$-symplectic manifolds. We provide constructions of $b$-symplectic structures on open manifolds by Gromov's $h$-principle, and of $b$-symplectic manifolds with a prescribed singular locus, by means of surgeries.

Normal forms for Poisson maps and symplectic groupoids around Poisson transversals

Poisson transversals are those submanifolds in a Poisson manifold which intersect all symplectic leaves transversally and symplectically. In a previous note we proved a normal form theorem around such submanifolds. In this communication, we promote that result to a normal form theorem for Poisson maps around Poisson transversals. A Poisson map pulls a Poisson transversal back to a Poisson transversal, and our first main result states that simultaneous normal forms exist around such transversals, for which the Poisson map becomes transversally linear, and intertwines the normal form data of the transversals. Our second main result concerns symplectic integrations. We prove that a neighborhood of a Poisson transversal is integrable exactly when the Poisson transversal itself is integrable, and in that case we prove a normal form theorem for the symplectic groupoid around its restriction to the Poisson transversal, which puts all its structure maps in normal form. We conclude the paper by illustrating our results with examples arising from Lie algebras.

A h-principle for symplectic foliations

We show that a classical result of Gromov in symplectic geometry extends to the context of symplectic foliations, which we regard as a $h$-principle for (regular) Poisson geometry. Namely, we formulate a sufficient cohomological criterion for a regular bivector to be homotopic to a regular Poisson structure, in the spirit of Haefliger's criterion for homotoping a distribution to a foliation. We give an example to show that this criterion is not too unsharp.
