Polarization-Temperature Correlation from a Primordial Magnetic Field

We propose a new method for constraining a primordial homogeneous magnetic field with the cosmic microwave background. Such a field will induce an observable parity odd cross correlation between the polarization anisotropy and the temperature anisotropy by Faraday rotation. We analyze the necessary experimental features to match, and improve, current constraints of such a field by measuring this correlation.

Cumulants as non-Gaussian qualifiers

We discuss the requirements of good statistics for quantifying non-Gaussianity in the Cosmic Microwave Background. The importance of rotational invariance and statistical independence is stressed, but we show that these are sometimes incompatible. It is shown that the first of these requirements prefers a real space (or wavelet) formulation, whereas the latter favours quantities defined in Fourier space. Bearing this in mind we decide to be eclectic and define two new sets of statistics to quantify the level of non-Gaussianity. Both sets make use of the concept of cumulants of a distribution. However, one set is defined in real space, with reference to the wavelet transform, whereas the other is defined in Fourier space. We derive a series of properties concerning these statistics for a Gaussian random field and show how one can relate these quantities to the higher order moments of temperature maps. Although our frameworks lead to an infinite hierarchy of quantities we show how cosmic variance and experimental constraints give a natural truncation of this hierarchy. We then focus on the real space statistics and analyse the non-Gaussian signal generated by points sources obscured by large scale Gaussian fluctuations. We conclude by discussing the practical implementations of these techniques.

The closet non-Gaussianity of anisotropic Gaussian fluctuations

In this paper we explore the connection between anisotropic Gaussian fluctuations and isotropic non-Gaussian fluctuations. We first set up a large angle framework for characterizing non-Gaussian fluctuations: large angle non-Gaussian spectra. We then consider anisotropic Gaussian fluctuations in two different situations. Firstly we look at anisotropic space-times and propose a prescription for superimposed Gaussian fluctuations; we argue against accidental symmetry in the fluctuations and that therefore the fluctuations should be anisotropic. We show how these fluctuations display previously known non-Gaussian effects both in the angular power spectrum and in non-Gaussian spectra. Secondly we consider the anisotropic Grischuk-Zel'dovich effect. We construct a flat space time with anisotropic, non-trivial topology and show how Gaussian fluctuations in such a space-time look non-Gaussian. In particular we show how non-Gaussian spectra may probe superhorizon anisotropy.

Non-Gaussian Spectra in the Cosmic Microwave Background

We propose a set of new statistics which can be extracted out of the angular distribution of the Fourier transform of the temperature anisotropies in the small field limit. They quantify generic non-Gaussian structure and complement the power spectrum in characterizing the sampled distribution function of a data set (contribution to the 18th Texas Symposium Proceedings)

Constraints on a Primordial Magnetic Field

We derive an upper limit of $B_0<3.4\times 10^{-9}(Ω_0h_{50}^2)^{1/2}$ Gauss on the present strength of any primordial homogeneous magnetic field. The microwave background anisotropy created by cosmological magnetic fields is calculated in the most general flat and open anisotropic cosmologies containing expansion-rate and 3-curvature anisotropies. Our limit is derived from a statistical analysis of the 4-year Cosmic Background Explorer data for anisotropy patterns characteristic of homogeneous anisotropy averaged over all possible sky orientations with respect to the COBE receiver. The limits we obtain are considerably stronger than those imposed by primordial nucleosynthesis and ensure that other magnetic field effects on the microwave background structure are unobservably small.

Non-Gaussian Spectra

Gaussian cosmic microwave background skies are fully specified by the power spectrum. The conventional method of characterizing non-Gaussian skies is to evaluate higher order moments, the n-point functions and their Fourier transforms. We argue that this method is inefficient, due to the redundancy of information existing in the complete set of moments. In this paper we propose a set of new statistics or non-Gaussian spectra to be extracted out of the angular distribution of the Fourier transform of the temperature anisotropies in the small field limit. These statistics complement the power spectrum and act as localization, shape, and connectedness statistics. They quantify generic non-Gaussian structure, and may be used in more general image processing tasks. We concentrate on a subset of these statistics and argue that while they carry no information in Gaussian theories they may be the best arena for making predictions in some non-Gaussian theories. As examples of applications we consider superposed Gaussian and non-Gaussian signals, such as point sources in Gaussian theories or the realistic Kaiser-Stebbins effect. We show that in these theories non-Gaussianity is only present in a ring in Fourier space, which is best isolated in our formalism. Subtle but strongly non-Gaussian theories are also written down for which only non-Gaussian spectra may accuse non-Gaussianity.

Microwave Anisotropies from Random Sources

I report on recent developments in the theory of cosmic background radiation perturbations. I describe ways of modeling alternatives to the canonical Gaussian theories within the standard framework of cosmological perturbation theory. Some comments are made on using these techniques to resolve the uncertainties in theories of structure formation with topological defects.
