Heavy-fermion hybridization waves from Dirac spinons near a Kondo-breakdown quantum phase transition

Motivated by the recent observation of spatially modulated screening in different paramagnetic heavy-fermion materials, we propose a theoretical mechanism for the emergence of such hybridization waves in frustrated Kondo lattices with no magnetic order. By applying a parton mean-field theory and a perturbative calculation to a minimal Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model, we demonstrate that a heavy Fermi liquid can naturally develop hybridization waves when it approaches a quantum phase transition where Kondo screening breaks down and the local magnetic moments form a Dirac spin liquid. We relate the strength of this mechanism to a kinematic condition on the electronic and spinon band structures and show that the spatial periodicity of the hybridization wave is set by a momentum $\vec{Q}$ connecting the nodes in the dispersion of the Dirac spinons to low-energy portions of the electronic band structure.

Fractionalization, emergent SU($N$) symmetries, and fragmentation in layered quantum spin-orbital models

We propose a family of layered quantum spin-orbital models as a platform to study fractionalization, unconventional forms of symmetry-breaking order, and their possible coexistence. The models are built by stacking $N$ layers of a square-lattice system in which Kitaev-type interactions promote the formation of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin-orbital liquid and coupling the different layers via Ising spin interactions. Using a parton construction, we show how, at low energies, these Hamiltonians can be mapped to $N$-component Fermi Hubbard models on a $π$-flux square lattice at half filling. We also demonstrate that the models acquire an emergent SU($N$) symmetry in the limit of equal all-to-all interlayer couplings and argue that, for $N>2$, the proximity to this limit offers the potential to realize an array of competing phases. To illustrate this point, we compute the zero-temperature phase diagram of the effective $N=3$ Hubbard model within mean-field theory and uncover rich phenomena, including intertwined orders and flavor-selective localization. Mapping back to the original degrees of freedom reveals that the ground states realize distinct forms of magnetic fragmentation, wherein the orbitals remain in a quantum liquid state whereas the spins can present conventional long-range order or nonlocal order characterized by a nontrivial string order parameters. We highlight possible extensions of our construction as well as its potential to provide concrete microscopic models for different fractionalized quantum critical points.

Unveiling Magnetic Frustration via the Elastocaloric Effect

Motivated by experimental progress in pressure and strain tuning of quantum materials, we examine the thermodynamic response of frustrated magnets to uniaxial strain. Specifically, we study Ising and Heisenberg models on spatially anisotropic triangular (and, for the Ising model, also kagome) lattices. We determine the entropy as a function of temperature and strain, and use it to compute the elastic Grüneisen ratio $η$. The Ising models can be strain-tuned into and out of classical spin-liquid phases, and we show that $η$ can become arbitrarily large at low temperature $T$ near the point of maximal frustration, a universal hallmark of an extensive ground-state entropy. In contrast, the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model is moderately frustrated and displays multiple $T=0$ phase transitions. These transitions dominate $η$ at low $T$ while the intermediate-$T$ behavior is similar to that of the Ising model. We discuss the extent to which the elastic Grüneisen ratio can be used to deduce the phase diagram, and we connect our results to recent experiments on triangular-lattice magnets.

Tuning the magnetic properties of Kitaev materials via the antiferromagnetic proximity effect: Novel phases and application to an $α$-RuCl$_3$/MnPS$_3$ bilayer

In recent years, the increasing level of control over van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures has opened new routes to tune the properties of quantum materials. Motivated by these developments, we examine the potential consequences of interfacing a Kitaev honeycomb magnet, such as $α$-RuCl$_3$, with a nearly lattice-matched vdW antiferromagnet. By combining perturbation theory, exact diagonalization, and a classical energy-minimization method, we show that an effective staggered magnetic field originating from the vdW antiferromagnet can drive a monolayer of a Kitaev material into various novel phases, including an antichiral Kitaev spin liquid, a nonmagnetic nematic phase, and different types of skyrmion crystals. We then apply first-principle simulations to assess the prospect of concretely realizing this setup in a heterobilayer of $α$-RuCl$_3$ and the easy-axis antiferromagnet MnPS$_3$.

Ferrimagnetism from quantum fluctuations in Kitaev materials

Ferrimagnetism appears in the temperature-field phase diagrams of several candidate Kitaev materials, such as the honeycomb cobaltates Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ and Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$. In a number of instances, however, the exact nature of the corresponding ground states remains the subject of ongoing debate. We show that general symmetry considerations can rule out candidate states that are incompatible with the observed ferrimagnetic behavior. In particular, we demonstrate that a ferrimagnetic response cannot be reconciled with a collinear zigzag ground state, owing to the combined time-reversal and translational symmetry inherent to that configuration. Instead, the observed behavior is fully compatible with the symmetries of noncollinear multi-$\mathbf q$ states, such as the triple-$\mathbf q$ discussed in the context of Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$. We exemplify this general result by computing the ferrimagnetic response of an extended Heisenberg-Kitaev-Gamma model with explicit sublattice symmetry breaking within linear spin-wave theory. If the model realizes a triple-$\mathbf q$ ground state, the calculated magnetization curve is well consistent with the low-temperature behavior observed in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$. In this case, a finite magnetization remains in the zero-temperature limit as a consequence of quantum fluctuations, even if the $g$-factors on the different sublattices are identical. For a zigzag ground state, by contrast, the total magnetization vanishes both at zero and finite temperatures, independent of possible sublattice-dependent $g$-factors, as expected from the symmetry analysis. The implications of our general result for other Kitaev materials exhibiting ferrimagnetic behavior are also briefly discussed.

SU($N$) altermagnetism: Lattice models, magnon modes, and flavor-split bands

Altermagnetism, a type of magnetic order that combines properties of ferro- and antiferromagnets, has stirred great interest lately not only as a promising source of spintronics applications, but also as a potential gateway to exotic phases of matter. Here, we demonstrate how to generalize collinear altermagnetism to SU($N$) magnets with $N>2$. Guided by symmetry principles, we present a recipe to construct Heisenberg models for such generalized altermagnets and apply it explicitly for $N=3,4$. Using flavor-wave theory, we compute the excitation spectrum of a two-dimensional SU(3) model and show that it exhibits magnon bands with altermagnetic splitting according to magnetic quantum numbers; we connect this quantum-number splitting to the frequently used concept of magnon chirality. We also compute the electronic band structure for a metallic system of the same symmetry and map out the polarization of the resulting flavor-split bands.

Disorder effects in spiral spin liquids: Long-range spin textures, Friedel-like oscillations, and spiral spin glasses

Spiral spin liquids are correlated states of matter in which a frustrated magnetic system evades order by fluctuating between a set of (nearly) degenerate spin spirals. Here, we investigate the response of spiral spin liquids to quenched disorder in a $J_1$-$J_2$ honeycomb-lattice Heisenberg model. At the single-impurity level, we identify different order-by-quenched-disorder phenomena and analyze the ensuing spin textures. In particular, we show that the latter generally display Friedel-like oscillations, which encode direct information about the spiral contour, i.e., the classical ground-state manifold. At finite defect concentrations, we perform extensive numerical simulations and characterize the resulting phases at zero temperature. As a result, we find that the competition between incompatible order-by-quenched-disorder mechanisms can lead to spiral spin glass states already at low to moderate disorder. Finally, we discuss extensions of our conclusions to nonzero temperatures and higher-dimensional systems, as well as their applications to experiments.

Kondo breakdown transitions and phase-separation tendencies in valence-fluctuating heavy-fermion materials

The breakdown of the lattice Kondo effect in local-moment metals can lead to non-trivial forms of quantum criticality and a variety of non-Fermi-liquid phases. Given indications that Kondo-breakdown transitions involve criticality not only in the spin but also in the charge sector, we investigate the interplay of Kondo breakdown and strong valence fluctuations in generalized Anderson lattice models. We employ a parton mean-field theory to describe the transitions between deconfined fractionalized Fermi liquids and various confined phases. We find that rapid valence changes near Kondo breakdown can render the quantum transition first order. This leads to phase-separation tendencies which, upon inclusion of longer-range Coulomb interactions, will produce intrinsically inhomogeneous states near Kondo-breakdown transitions. We connect our findings to unsolved aspects of experimental data.

Stability of ordered and disordered phases in the Heisenberg-Kitaev model in a magnetic field

The $S=1/2$ Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention as an exactly solvable example with a quantum spin liquid ground state. In a properly oriented external magnetic field, chiral Majorana edge modes associated with a quantized thermal Hall conductance emerge, and a distinct spin-disordered phase appears at intermediate field strengths, below the polarized phase. However, since material realizations of Kitaev magnetism invariably display competing exchange interactions, the stability of these exotic phases with respect to additional couplings is a key issue. Here, we report a 24-site exact diagonalization study of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model in a magnetic field applied in the [001] and [111] directions. By mapping the full phase diagram of the model and contrasting the results to recent nonlinear spin-wave calculations, we show that both methods agree well, thus establishing that quantum corrections substantially modify the classical phase diagram. Furthermore, we find that, in a [111] field, the intermediate-field spin-disordered phase is remarkably stable to Heisenberg interactions and may potentially end in a novel quantum tricritical point.

Fluctuation-induced ferrimagnetism in sublattice-imbalanced antiferromagnets with application to SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ under pressure

We show that a collinear Heisenberg antiferromagnet, whose sublattice symmetry is broken at the Hamiltonian level, becomes a fluctuation-induced ferrimagnet at any finite temperature $T$ below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$. We demonstrate this using a layered variant of a square-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ model. Linear spin-wave theory is used to determine the low-temperature behavior of the uniform magnetization, and non-linear corrections are argued to yield a temperature-induced qualitative change of the magnon spectrum. We then consider a layered Shastry-Sutherland model, describing a frustrated arrangement of orthogonal dimers. This model displays an antiferromagnetic phase for large intra-dimer couplings. A lattice distortion which breaks the glide symmetry between the two types of dimers corresponds to broken sublattice symmetry and hence gives rise to ferrimagnetism. Given indications that such a distortion is present in the material SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ under hydrostatic pressure, we suggest the existence of a fluctuation-induced ferrimagnetic phase in pressurized SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. We predict a non-monotonic behavior of the uniform magnetization as function of temperature.

Heisenberg-Kitaev model in a magnetic field: $1/S$ expansion

The exact solution of Kitaev's spin-$1/2$ honeycomb spin-liquid model has sparked an intense search for Mott insulators hosting bond-dependent Kitaev interactions, of which $\mathrm{Na}_{2}\mathrm{IrO}_{3}$ and $α-\mathrm{RuCl}_{3}$ are prime examples. Subsequently, it has been proposed that also spin-$1$ and spin-$3/2$ analogs of Kitaev interactions may occur in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. As a minimal model to describe these Kitaev materials, we study the Heisenberg-Kitaev Hamiltonian in a consistent $1/S$ expansion, with $S$ being the spin size. We present a comprehensive study of this model in the presence of an external magnetic field applied along two different directions, [001] and [111], for which an intricate classical phase diagram has been reported. In both settings, we employ spin-wave theory in a number of ordered phases to compute phase boundaries at the next-to-leading order in $1/S$ and show that quantum corrections substantially modify the classical phase diagram. More broadly, our work presents a consistent route to investigate the leading quantum corrections in spin models that break spin-rotational symmetry.
