Sensitivity Analysis of Stochastic Constraint and Variational Systems via Generalized Differentiation

This paper conducts sensitivity analysis of random constraint and variational systems related to stochastic optimization and variational inequalities. We establish efficient conditions for well-posedness, in the sense of robust Lipschitzian stability and/or metric regularity, of such systems by employing and developing coderivative characterizations of well-posedness properties for random multifunctions and efficiently evaluating coderivatives of special classes of random integral set-valued mappings that naturally emerge in stochastic programming and stochastic variational inequalities.

Random multifunctions as the set minimizers of infinitely many differentiable random functions

Under mild assumptions, we prove that any random multifunction can be represented as the set of minimizers of an infinitely many differentiable normal integrand, which preserves the convexity of the random multifunction. We provide several applications of this result to the approximation of random multifunctions and integrands. The paper ends with a characterization of the set of integrable selections of a measurable multifunction as the set of minimizers of an infinitely many differentiable integral function.

Generalized Leibniz rules and Lipschitzian stability for expected-integral mappings

This paper is devoted to the study of the expected-integral multifunctions given in the form \begin{equation*} \operatorname{E}_Φ(x):=\int_TΦ_t(x)dμ, \end{equation*} where $Φ\colon T\times\mathbb{R}^n \rightrightarrows \mathbb{R}^m$ is a set-valued mapping on a measure space $(T,\mathcal{A},μ)$. Such multifunctions appear in applications to stochastic programming, which require developing efficient calculus rules of generalized differentiation. Major calculus rules are developed in this paper for coderivatives of multifunctions $\operatorname{E}_Φ$ and second-order subdifferentials of the corresponding expected-integral functionals with applications to constraint systems arising in stochastic programming. The paper is self-contained with presenting in the preliminaries some needed results on sequential first-order subdifferential calculus of expected-integral functionals taken from the first paper of this series.

Generalized Sequential Differential Calculus for Expected-Integral Functionals

Motivated by applications to stochastic programming, we introduce and study the expected-integral functionals, which are mappings given in an integral form depending on two variables, the first a finite dimensional decision vector and the second one an integrable function. The main goal of this paper is to establish sequential versions of Leibniz's rule for regular subgradients by employing and developing appropriate tools of variational analysis.

Ergodic Approach to Robust Optimization and Infinite Programming Problems

In this work, we show the consistency of an approach for solving robust optimization problems using sequences of sub-problems generated by ergodic measure preserving transformations. The main result of this paper is that the minimizers and the optimal value of the sub-problems converge, in some sense, to the minimizers and the optimal value of the initial problem, respectively. Our result particularly implies the consistency of the scenario approach for nonconvex optimization problems. Finally, we show that our method can also be used to solve infinite programming problems.

Tikhonov-like regularization of dynamical systems associated with nonexpansive operators defined in closed and convex sets

In this paper, we propose a Tikhonov-like regularization for dynamical systems associated with non-expansive operators defined in closed and convex sets of a Hilbert space. We prove the well-posedness and the strong convergence of the proposed dynamical systems to a fixed point of the non-expansive operator. We apply the obtained result to dynamical system associated with the problem of finding the zeros of the sum of a cocoercive operator with the subdifferential of a convex function.

New extremal principles with applications to stochastic and semi-infinite programming

This paper develops new extremal principles of variational analysis that are motivated by applications to constrained problems of stochastic programming and semi-infinite programming without smoothness and/or convexity assumptions. These extremal principles concern measurable set-valued mappings/multifunctions with values in finite-dimensional spaces and are established in both approximate and exact forms. The obtained principles are instrumental to derive via variational approaches integral representations and upper estimates of regular and limiting normals cones to essential intersections of sets defined by measurable multifunctions, which are in turn crucial for novel applications to stochastic and semi-infinite programming.

Weak compactness of sublevel sets in complete locally convex spaces

In this work we prove that if $X$ is a complete locally convex space and $f:X\to \mathbb{R}\cup \{+\infty \}$ is a function such that $f-x^\ast$ attains its minimum for every $x^\ast \in U$, where $U$ is an open set with respect to the Mackey topology in $X^\ast$, then for every $γ\in \mathbb{R}$ and $x^\ast \in U$ the set $\{ x\in X : f(x)- \langle x^\ast , x \rangle \leq γ\}$ is relatively weakly compact. This result corresponds to an extension of Theorem 2.4 in [J. Saint Raymond, Mediterr. J. Math. 10 (2013), no. 2, 927--940]. Directional James compactness theorems are also derived.

Qualification conditions-free characterizations of the $\varepsilon$-subdifferential of convex integral functions

We provide formulae for the $\varepsilon$-subdifferential of the integral function $ I_f(x):=\int_T f(t,x) dμ(t), $ where the integrand $f:T\times X \to [-\infty,+\infty]$ is measurable in $(t,x)$ and convex in $x$. The state variable lies in a locally convex space, possibly non-separable, while $T$ is given a structure of a nonnegative complete $σ$-finite measure space $(T,\mathcal{A},μ)$. The resulting characterizations are given in terms of the $ε$-subdifferential of the data functions involved in the integrand, $f$, without requiring any qualification conditions. We also derive new formulas when some usual continuity-type conditions are in force. These results are new even for the finite sum of convex functions and for the finite-dimensional setting.

Characterizations of the subdifferential of convex integral functions under qualification conditions

This work provides formulae for the $ε$-subdifferential of integral functions in the framework of complete $σ$-finite measure spaces and locally convex spaces. In this work we present here new formulae for this $ε$-subdifferential under the presence of continuity-type qualification conditions relying on the data involved in the integrand. the integral function $I_f$ are also presented.

An enhanced Baillon-Haddad theorem for convex functions on convex sets

The Baillon-Haddad theorem establishes that the gradient of a convex and continuously differentiable function defined in a Hilbert space is $β$-Lipschitz if and only if it is $1/β$-cocoercive. In this paper, we extend this theorem to Gâteaux differentiable convex functions defined on an open convex set of a Hilbert space. Finally, we give a characterization of $C^{1,+}$ convex functions in terms of local cocoercitivity.

Sequential and exact formulae for the subdifferential of nonconvex integral functionals

This work concerns the study of the subdifferential of the integral functional $$ E_f(x)=\int_{T} f(t,x)dμ(t), $$ where $f$ is a (not necessarily convex) normal integrand, $({T},\mathcal{A},μ)$ is a $σ$-finite measure space, while the decision variables vary in a separable Asplund space. First, using techniques of variational analysis we establish sequential approximate formulae for the Fréchet subdifferential of $E_f$. Secondly, we introduce a Lipschitz-like condition, which allows us to give an upper-estimation for the limiting subdifferential of $E_{f}$ even when this functional is non-Lipschitz.

Subdifferential formulae for the supremum of an arbitrary family of functions

This work provides calculus for the Fréchet and limiting subdifferential of the pointwise supremum given by an arbitrary family of lower semicontinuous functions. We start our study showing fuzzy results about the Fréchet subdifferential of the supremum function. Posteriorly, we study in finite- and infinite-dimensional settings the limiting subdifferential of the supremum function. Finally, we apply our results to the study of the convex subdifferential; here we recover general formulae for the subdifferential of an arbitrary family of convex functions.

Formulae for the Conjugate and the Subdifferential of the Supremum Function

The aim of this work is to provide formulae for the subdifferential and the conjungate function of the supremun function over an arbitrary family of functions. The work is principally motivated by the case when data functions are lower semicontinuous proper and convex. Nevertheless, we explore the case when the family of functions is arbitrary, but satisfying that the biconjugate of the supremum functions is equal to the supremum of the biconjugate of the data functions. The study focuses its attention on functions defined in finite-dimensional spaces, in this case the formulae can be simplified under certain qualification conditions. However, we show how to extend these results to arbitrary locally convex spaces without any qualification condition.

Subdifferential characterization of probability functions under Gaussian distribution

Probability functions figure prominently in optimization problems of engineering. They may be nonsmooth even if all input data are smooth. This fact motivates the consideration of subdifferentials for such typically just continuous functions. The aim of this paper is to provide subdifferential formulae in the case of Gaussian distributions for possibly infinite-dimensional decision variables and nonsmooth (locally Lipschitzian) input data. These formulae are based on the spheric-radial decomposition of Gaussian random vectors on the one hand and on a cone of directions of moderate growth on the other. By successively adding additional hypotheses, conditions are satisfied under which the probability function is locally Lipschitzian or even differentiable.
