Numerical optimisation of Dirac eigenvalues

Motivated by relativistic materials, we develop a numerical scheme to support existing or state new conjectures in the spectral optimisation of eigenvalues of the Dirac operator, subject to infinite-mass boundary conditions. We study the optimality of the regular polygon (respectively, disk) among all polygons of a given number of sides (respectively, arbitrary sets), subject to area or perimeter constraints. We consider the three lowest positive eigenvalues and their ratios. Roughly, we find results analogous to known or expected for the Dirichlet Laplacian, except for the third eigenvalue which does not need to be minimised by the regular polygon (respectively, the disk) for all masses. In addition to the numerical results, a new, mass-dependent upper bound to the lowest eigenvalue in rectangles is proved and its extension to arbitrary quadrilaterals is conjectured.

Optimization of the Steklov-Lamé eigenvalues with respect to the domain

This work deals with theoretical and numerical aspects related to the behavior of the Steklov-Lamé eigenvalues on variable domains. After establishing the eigenstructure for the disk, we prove that for a certain class of Lamé parameters, the disk maximizes the first non-zero eigenvalue under area or perimeter constraints in dimension two. Upper bounds for these eigenvalues can be found in terms of the scalar Steklov eigenvalues, involving various geometric quantities. We prove that the Steklov-Lamé eigenvalues are upper semicontinuous for the complementary Hausdorff convergence of $\varepsilon$-cone domains and, as a consequence, there exist shapes maximizing these eigenvalues under convexity and volume constraints. A numerical method based on fundamental solutions is proposed for computing the Steklov-Lamé eigenvalues, allowing to study numerically the shapes maximizing the first ten non-zero eigenvalues.

A well conditioned Method of Fundamental Solutions

The method of fundamental solutions (MFS) is a numerical method for solving boundary value problems involving linear partial differential equations. It is well known that it can be very effective assuming regularity of the domain and boundary conditions. The main drawback of the MFS is that the matrices involved typically are ill-conditioned and this may prevent to achieve high accuracy. In this work, we propose a new algorithm to remove the ill conditioning of the classical MFS in the context of Laplace equation defined in planar domains. The main idea is to expand the MFS basis functions in terms of harmonic polynomials. Then, using the singular value decomposition and Arnoldi orthogonalization we define well conditioned basis functions spanning the same functional space as the MFS's. Several numerical examples show that this approach is much superior to previous approaches, such as the classical MFS or the MFS-QR.

Parametric Shape Optimization using the Support Function

The optimization of shape functionals under convexity, diameter or constant width constraints shows numerical challenges. The support function can be used in order to approximate solutions to such problems by finite dimensional optimization problems under various constraints. We propose a numerical framework in dimensions two and three and we present applications from the field of convex geometry. We consider the optimization of functionals depending on the volume, perimeter and Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues under the aforementioned constraints. In particular we confirm numerically Meissner's conjecture, regarding three dimensional bodies of constant width with minimal volume.

Numerical calculation of extremal Steklov eigenvalues in 3D and 4D

We develop a numerical method for solving shape optimization of functionals involving Steklov eigenvalues and apply it to the problem of maximization of the $k$-th Steklov eigenvalue, under volume constraint. A similar study in the planar case was addressed in [E. Akhmetgaliyev, C.-Y. Kao and B. Osting, SIAM J. Control Optim. 55(2), 1226-1240, (2017)] using the boundary integral equation method. Here we extend that study to the 3D and 4D cases, using the Method of Fundamental Solutions as forward solver.

Modelling silicosis: dynamics of a model with piecewise constant rate coefficients

We study the dynamics about equilibria of an infinite dimension coagulation-fragmentation-death model for the silicosis disease mechanism introduced recently by da Costa, Drmota, and Grinfeld [Modelling silicosis: structure of equilibria, Euro. J. Appl. Math., 31 (6), (2020) 950-967] in the case where the rate coefficients are piecewise constant.

A variational formulation for Dirac operators in bounded domains. Applications to spectral geometric inequalities

We investigate spectral features of the Dirac operator with infinite mass boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^2$. Motivated by spectral geometric inequalities, we prove a non-linear variational formulation to characterize its principal eigenvalue. This characterization turns out to be very robust and allows for a simple proof of a Szegö type inequality as well as a new reformulation of a Faber-Krahn type inequality for this operator. The paper is complemented with strong numerical evidences supporting the existence of a Faber-Krahn type inequality.

Bounds and extremal domains for Robin eigenvalues with negative boundary parameter

We present some new bounds for the first Robin eigenvalue with a negative boundary parameter. These include the constant volume problem, where the bounds are based on the shrinking coordinate method, and a proof that in the fixed perimeter case the disk maximises the first eigenvalue for all values of the parameter. This is in contrast with what happens in the constant area problem, where the disk is the maximiser only for small values of the boundary parameter. We also present sharp upper and lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the ball and spherical shells. These results are complemented by the numerical optimisation of the first four and two eigenvalues in 2 and 3 dimensions, respectively, and an evaluation of the quality of the upper bounds obtained. We also study the bifurcations from the ball as the boundary parameter becomes large (negative).

Critical behaviour for scalar nonlinear waves

In the long-wave regime, nonlinear waves may undergo a phase transition from a smooth to a fast oscillatory behaviour. We study this phenomenon, commonly known as dispersive shock, in the light of Dubrovin's universality conjecture , and we argue that the transition can be described by a special solution of a model universal partial differential equation. This universal solution is constructed by means of a string equation. We provide a classification of universality classes and the explicit description of the transition by means of special functions, extending Dubrovin's universality conjecture to a wider class of equations. In particular, we show that Benjamin-Ono equation belongs to a novel universality class with respect to the ones known in the literature, and we compute its string equation exactly. We describe our results using the language of statistical mechanics, showing that dispersive shocks share many features of the tri-critical point in statistical systems, and building a dictionary between nonlinear waves and statistical mechanics.

Asymptotic behaviour and numerical approximation of optimal eigenvalues of the Robin Laplacian

We consider the problem of minimising the $n^{th}-$eigenvalue of the Robin Laplacian in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$. Although for $n=1,2$ and a positive boundary parameter $α$ it is known that the minimisers do not depend on $α$, we demonstrate numerically that this will not always be the case and illustrate how the optimiser will depend on $α$. We derive a Wolf-Keller type result for this problem and show that optimal eigenvalues grow at most with $n^{1/N}$, which is in sharp contrast with the Weyl asymptotics for a fixed domain. We further show that the gap between consecutive eigenvalues does go to zero as $n$ goes to infinity. Numerical results then support the conjecture that for each $n$ there exists a positive value of $α_{n}$ such that the $n^{\rm th}$ eigenvalue is minimised by $n$ disks for all $0<α<α_{n}$ and, combined with analytic estimates, that this value is expected to grow with $n^{1/N}$.
