Quantales of open groupoids

It is well known that inverse semigroups are closely related to étale groupoids. In particular, it has recently been shown that there is a (non-functorial) equivalence between localic étale groupoids, on one hand, and complete and infinitely distributive inverse semigroups (abstract complete pseudogroups), on the other. This correspondence is mediated by a class of quantales, known as inverse quantal frames, that are obtained from the inverse semigroups by a simple join completion that yields an equivalence of categories. Hence, we can regard abstract complete pseudogroups as being essentially ``the same'' as inverse quantal frames, and in this paper we exploit this fact in order to find a suitable replacement for inverse semigroups in the context of open groupoids that are not necessarily étale. The interest of such a generalization lies in the importance and ubiquity of open groupoids in areas such as operator algebras, differential geometry and topos theory, and we achieve it by means of a class of quantales, called open quantal frames, which generalize inverse quantal frames and whose properties we study in detail. The resulting correspondence between quantales and open groupoids is not a straightforward generalization of the previous results concerning étale groupoids, and it depends heavily on the existence of inverse semigroups of local bisections of the quantales involved.

Etale groupoids as germ groupoids and their base extensions

We introduce the notion of wide representation of an inverse semigroup and prove that with a suitably defined topology there is a space of germs of such a representation which has the structure of an etale groupoid. This gives an elegant description of Paterson's universal groupoid and of the translation groupoid of Skandalis, Tu, and Yu. In addition we characterize the inverse semigroups that arise from groupoids, leading to a precise bijection between the class of etale groupoids and the class of complete and infinitely distributive inverse monoids equipped with suitable representations, and we explain the sense in which quantales and localic groupoids carry a generalization of this correspondence.

Sheaves as modules

We revisit sheaves on locales by placing them in the context of the theory of quantale modules. The local homeomorphisms $p:X\to B$ are identified with the Hilbert $B$-modules that are equipped with a natural notion of basis. The homomorphisms of these modules are necessarily adjointable, and the resulting self-dual category yields a description of the equivalence between local homeomorphisms and sheaves whereby morphisms of sheaves arise as the ``operator adjoints'' of the maps of local homeomorphisms.

An algebraic generalization of Kripke structures

The Kripke semantics of classical propositional normal modal logic is made algebraic via an embedding of Kripke structures into the larger class of pointed stably supported quantales. This algebraic semantics subsumes the traditional algebraic semantics based on lattices with unary operators, and it suggests natural interpretations of modal logic, of possible interest in the applications, in structures that arise in geometry and analysis, such as foliated manifolds and operator algebras, via topological groupoids and inverse semigroups. We study completeness properties of the quantale based semantics for the systems K, T, K4, S4, and S5, in particular obtaining an axiomatization for S5 which does not use negation or the modal necessity operator. As additional examples we describe intuitionistic propositional modal logic, the logic of programs PDL, and the ramified temporal logic CTL.

Etale groupoids and their quantales

We establish a close and previously unknown relation between quantales and groupoids, in terms of which the notion of etale groupoid is subsumed in a natural way by that of quantale. In particular, to each etale groupoid, either localic or topological, there is associated a unital involutive quantale. We obtain a bijective correspondence between localic etale groupoids and their quantales, which are given a rather simple characterization and are here called inverse quantal frames. We show that the category of inverse quantal frames is equivalent to the category of complete and infinitely distributive inverse monoids, and as a consequence we obtain a correspondence between these and localic etale groupoids that generalizes more classical results concerning inverse semigroups and topological etale groupoids. This generalization is entirely algebraic and it is valid in an arbitrary topos. As a consequence of these results we see that a localic groupoid is etale if and only if its sublocale of units is open and its multiplication map is semiopen, and an analogue of this holds for topological groupoids. In practice we are provided with new tools for constructing localic and topological etale groupoids, as well as inverse semigroups, for instance via presentations of quantales by generators and relations. The characterization of inverse quantal frames is to a large extent based on a new quantale operation, here called a support, whose properties are thoroughly investigated, and which may be of independent interest.

A noncommutative theory of Penrose tilings

Considering quantales as generalised noncommutative spaces, we address as an example a quantale Pen based on the Penrose tilings of the plane. We study in general the representations of involutive quantales on those of binary relations, and show that in the case of Pen the algebraically irreducible representations provide a complete classification of the set of Penrose tilings from which its representation as a quotient of Cantor space is recovered.

Quantales as geometric objects: symmetry beyond groupoids?

This is a short survey paper, partly meant as a research announcement. Its purpose is to highlight some aspects of the interplay between quantales, inverse semigroups, and groupoids. Many of the results mentioned have not yet been presented and will appear in detail elsewhere.

On quantales that classify C*-algebras

The functor Max of Mulvey assigns to each unital C*-algebra A the unital involutive quantale Max A of closed linear subspaces of A, and it has been remarked that it classifies unital C*-algebras up to *-isomorphism. In this paper we provide a proof of this and of the stronger fact that for every isomorphism u : Max A -> Max B of unital involutive quantales there is a *-isomorphism u' : A -> B such that Max u' coincides with u when restricted to the left-sided elements of Max A. But we also show that isomorphisms u : Max A -> Max B may exist for which no isomorphism v : A -> B is such that Max v = u.

Sup-lattice 2-forms and quantales

A 2-form between two sup-lattices L and R is defined to be a sup-lattice bimorphism L x R -> 2. Such 2-forms are equivalent to Galois connections, and we study them and their relation to quantales, involutive quantales and quantale modules. As examples we describe applications to C*-algebras.

On quantales and spectra of C*-algebras

We study properties of the quantale spectrum Max A of an arbitrary unital C*-algebra A. In particular we show that the spatialization of Max A with respect to one of the notions of spatiality in the literature yields the locale of closed ideals of A when A is commutative. We study under general conditions functors with this property, in addition requiring that colimits be preserved, and we conclude in this case that the spectrum of A necessarily coincides with the locale of closed ideals of the commutative reflection of A. Finally, we address functorial properties of Max, namely studying (non-)preservation of limits and colimits. Although Max is not an equivalence of categories, therefore not providing a direct generalization of Gelfand duality to the noncommutative case, it is a faithful complete invariant of unital C*-algebras.
