Dissipation-induced long-range order in the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model

Understanding the stability of strongly correlated phases of matter when coupled to environmental degrees of freedom is crucial for identifying the conditions under which these states may be observed. Here, we focus on the paradigmatic one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model, and study the stability of the Luttinger liquid and Mott insulating phases in the presence of local particle exchange with site-independent baths of non-interacting bosons. We perform a numerically exact analysis of this model by adapting the recently developed wormhole quantum Monte Carlo method for retarded interactions to a continuous-time formulation with worm updates; we show how the wormhole updates can be easily implemented in this scheme. For an Ohmic bath, our numerical findings confirm the scaling prediction that the Luttinger-liquid phase becomes unstable at infinitesimal bath coupling. We show that the ensuing phase is a long-range ordered superfluid with spontaneously-broken U(1) symmetry. While the Mott insulator remains a distinct phase for small bath coupling, it exhibits diverging compressibility and non-integer local boson occupation in the thermodynamic limit. Upon increasing the bath coupling, this phase undergoes a transition to a long-range ordered superfluid. Finally, we discuss the effects of super-Ohmic dissipation on the Luttinger-liquid phase. Our results are compatible with a stable dissipative Luttinger-liquid phase that transitions to a long-range ordered superfluid at a finite system-bath coupling.

Mean-field approach to Mid-spectrum Eigenstates of long-range interacting Quantum Systems

We study the equilibrium properties of the spin-$1/2$ XY chain with an infinite-range transverse interaction. At zero temperature, competition between the XY- and the $z$-ordered phases induced by the infinite-range interactions gives rise to a first-order transition upon increasing the transverse coupling. We show that the two gapless points of the XY model behave in fundamentally different ways: isotropic spin chains experience a first-order transition at finite coupling; maximal anisotropic chains overcome a non-algebraic phase transition at zero coupling strength. The phase diagram depicts a first-order reentrant transition that turns second-order along a tricritical line separating a paramagnetic phase from an ordered one at finite temperature. The mean-field approach captures the local properties of the eigenstates and reveals the appearance of a magnetization gap in the spectrum. Global properties, e.g., entanglement entropy, are well approximated only at spectral boundaries. The mean entanglement entropy and the level-spacing ratio deviate from the Gaussian results, revealing the interacting nature of the problem.

Spectral and steady-state properties of fermionic random quadratic Liouvillians

We study spectral and steady-state properties of generic Markovian dissipative systems described by quadratic fermionic Liouvillian operators of the Lindblad form. The Hamiltonian dynamics is modeled by a generic random quadratic operator, i.e., as a featureless superconductor of class D, whereas the Markovian dissipation is described by $M$ random linear jump operators. By varying the dissipation strength and the ratio of dissipative channels per fermion, $m=M/(2N_F)$, we find two distinct phases where the support of the single-particle spectrum has one or two connected components. In the strongly dissipative regime, this transition occurs for $m=1/2$ and is concomitant with a qualitative change in both the steady-state and the spectral gap that rules the large-time dynamics. Above this threshold, the spectral gap and the steady-state purity qualitatively agree with the fully generic (i.e., non-quadratic) case studied recently. Below $m=1/2$, the spectral gap closes in the thermodynamic limit and the steady-state decouples into an ergodic and a nonergodic sector yielding a non-monotonic steady-state purity as a function of the dissipation strength. Our results show that some of the universal features previously observed for fully random Liouvillians are generic for a sufficiently large number of jump operators. On the other hand, if the number of dissipation channels is decreased the system can exhibit nonergodic features, rendering it possible to suppress dissipation in protected subspaces even in the presence of strong system-environment coupling.

Renormalization-Group Theory of 1D quasiperiodic lattice models with commensurate approximants

We develop a renormalization group (RG) description of the localization properties of onedimensional (1D) quasiperiodic lattice models. The RG flow is induced by increasing the unit cell of subsequent commensurate approximants. Phases of quasiperiodic systems are characterized by RG fixed points associated with renormalized single-band models. We identify fixed-points that include many previously reported exactly solvable quasiperiodic models. By classifying relevant and irrelevant perturbations, we show that phase boundaries of more generic models can be determined with exponential accuracy in the approximant's unit cell size, and in some cases analytically. Our findings provide a unified understanding of widely different classes of 1D quasiperiodic systems.

Symmetry Classification of Many-Body Lindbladians: Tenfold Way and Beyond

We perform a systematic symmetry classification of many-body Lindblad superoperators describing general (interacting) open quantum systems coupled to a Markovian environment. Our classification is based on the behavior of the many-body Lindbladian under antiunitary symmetries and unitary involutions. We find that Hermiticity preservation reduces the number of symmetry classes, while trace preservation and complete positivity do not, and that the set of admissible classes depends on the presence of additional unitary symmetries: in their absence or in symmetry sectors containing steady states, many-body Lindbladians belong to one of ten non-Hermitian symmetry classes; if however, there are additional symmetries and we consider non-steady-state sectors, they belong to a different set of 19 classes. In both cases, it does not include classes with Kramer's degeneracy. Remarkably, our classification admits a straightforward generalization to the case of non-Markovian, and even non-trace-preserving, open quantum dynamics. While the abstract classification is completely general, we then apply it to general (long-range, interacting, spatially inhomogeneous) spin-$1/2$ chains. We explicitly build examples in all ten classes of Lindbladians in steady-state sectors, describing standard physical processes such as dephasing, spin injection and absorption, and incoherent hopping, thus illustrating the relevance of our classification for practical physics applications. Finally, we show that the examples in each class display unique random-matrix correlations. To fully resolve all symmetries, we employ the combined analysis of bulk complex spacing ratios and the overlap of eigenvector pairs related by symmetry operations. We further find that statistics of levels constrained onto the real and imaginary axes or close to the origin are not universal due to spontaneous breaking of Lindbladian PT symmetry.

The GANfather: Controllable generation of malicious activity to improve defence systems

Machine learning methods to aid defence systems in detecting malicious activity typically rely on labelled data. In some domains, such labelled data is unavailable or incomplete. In practice this can lead to low detection rates and high false positive rates, which characterise for example anti-money laundering systems. In fact, it is estimated that 1.7--4 trillion euros are laundered annually and go undetected. We propose The GANfather, a method to generate samples with properties of malicious activity, without label requirements. We propose to reward the generation of malicious samples by introducing an extra objective to the typical Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) loss. Ultimately, our goal is to enhance the detection of illicit activity using the discriminator network as a novel and robust defence system. Optionally, we may encourage the generator to bypass pre-existing detection systems. This setup then reveals defensive weaknesses for the discriminator to correct. We evaluate our method in two real-world use cases, money laundering and recommendation systems. In the former, our method moves cumulative amounts close to 350 thousand dollars through a network of accounts without being detected by an existing system. In the latter, we recommend the target item to a broad user base with as few as 30 synthetic attackers. In both cases, we train a new defence system to capture the synthetic attacks.

Generalizations (in the spirit of Koshliakov) of some formulas from Ramanujan's Lost Notebook

In his lost notebook, Ramanujan recorded beautiful identities. These include earlier versions of Koshliakov's formula for the divisor function and the transformation formula for the logarithm of Dedekind's $η-$function. In this paper we establish some generalizations of these formulas of Ramanujan in a setting that only recently reemerged in the literature and which concerns a beautiful theory due to Koshliakov.

Specification, Validation and Verification of Social, Legal, Ethical, Empathetic and Cultural Requirements for Autonomous Agents

Autonomous agents are increasingly being proposed for use in healthcare, assistive care, education, and other applications governed by complex human-centric norms. To ensure compliance with these norms, the rules they induce need to be unambiguously defined, checked for consistency, and used to verify the agent. In this paper, we introduce a framework for formal specification, validation and verification of social, legal, ethical, empathetic and cultural (SLEEC) rules for autonomous agents. Our framework comprises: (i) a language for specifying SLEEC rules and rule defeaters (that is, circumstances in which a rule does not apply or an alternative form of the rule is required); (ii) a formal semantics (defined in the process algebra tock-CSP) for the language; and (iii) methods for detecting conflicts and redundancy within a set of rules, and for verifying the compliance of an autonomous agent with such rules. We show the applicability of our framework for two autonomous agents from different domains: a firefighter UAV, and an assistive-dressing robot.

Quasiperiodicity hinders ergodic Floquet eigenstates

Quasiperiodic systems in one dimension can host non-ergodic states, e.g. localized in position or momentum. Periodic quenches within localized phases yield Floquet eigenstates of the same nature, i.e. spatially localized or ballistic. However, periodic quenches across these two non-ergodic phases were thought to produce ergodic diffusive-like states even for non-interacting particles. We show that this expectation is not met at the thermodynamic limit where the system always attains a non-ergodic state. We find that ergodicity may be recovered by scaling the Floquet quenching period with system size and determine the corresponding scaling function. Our results suggest that while the fraction of spatially localized or ballistic states depends on the model's details, all Floquet eigenstates belong to one of these non-ergodic categories. Our findings demonstrate that quasiperiodicity hinders ergodicity and thermalization, even in driven systems where these phenomena are commonly expected.

Third-order topological insulator induced by disorder

We have found the first instance of a third-order topological Anderson insulator (TOTAI). This disorder-induced topological phase is gapped and characterized by a quantized octupole moment and topologically protected corner states, as revealed by a detailed numerically exact analysis. We also find that the disorder-induced transition into the TOTAI phase can be analytically captured with remarkable accuracy using the self-consistent Born approximation. For a larger disorder strength, the TOTAI undergoes a transition to a trivial diffusive metal, that in turn becomes an Anderson insulator at even larger disorder. Our findings show that disorder can induce third-order topological phases in 3D, therefore extending the class of known higher-order topological Anderson insulators.

Certain Extensions of Results of Siegel, Wilton and Hardy

Recently, Dixit et al. established a very elegant generalization of Hardy's Theorem concerning the infinitude of zeros that the Riemann zeta function possesses at its critical line. By introducing a general transformation formula for the theta function involving the Bessel and Modified Bessel functions of the first kind, we extend their result to a class of Dirichlet series satisfying Hecke's functional equation. In the process, we also find new generalizations of classical identities in Analytic number theory.

Incommensurability enabled quasi-fractal order in 1D narrow-band moiré systems

We demonstrate that quasiperiodicity can radically change the ground state properties of 1D moiré systems with respect to their periodic counterparts. By studying an illustrative example we show that while narrow bands play a significant role in enhancing interactions both for commensurate and incommensurate structures, only quasiperiodicity is able to extend the ordered phase down to an infinitesimal interaction strength. In this regime, the quasiperiodic-enabled state has contributions from infinitely many wave vectors. This quasi-factal regime cannot be stabilized in the commensurate case even in the presence of a narrow band. These findings suggest that quasiperiodicity may be a critical factor in stabilizing non-trivial ordered phases in interacting moiré structures and signal out multifractal non-interacting phases, recently found in 2D incommensurate moiré systems, as particularly promising parent states.

Critical phase dualities in 1D exactly-solvable quasiperiodic models

We propose a solvable class of 1D quasiperiodic tight-binding models encompassing extended, localized, and critical phases, separated by nontrivial mobility edges. Limiting cases include the Aubry-André model and the models of PRL 114, 146601 and PRL 104, 070601. The analytical treatment follows from recognizing these models as a novel type of fixed-points of the renormalization group procedure recently proposed in arXiv:2206.13549 for characterizing phases of quasiperiodic structures. Beyond known limits, the proposed class of models extends previously encountered localized-delocalized duality transformations to points within multifractal critical phases. Besides an experimental confirmation of multifractal duality, realizing the proposed class of models in optical lattices allows stabilizing multifractal critical phases and non-trivial mobility edges without the need for the unbounded potentials required by previous proposals.

Short-range interactions are irrelevant at the quasiperiodic-driven Luttinger Liquid to Anderson Glass transition

We show that short-range interactions are irrelevant around gapless ground-state delocalization-localization transitions driven by quasiperiodicity in interacting fermionic chains. In the presence of interactions, these transitions separate Luttinger Liquid and Anderson glass phases. Remarkably, close to criticality, we find that excitations become effectively non-interacting. By formulating a many-body generalization of a recently developed method to obtain single-particle localization phase diagrams, we carry out precise calculations of critical points between Luttinger Liquid and Anderson glass phases and find that the correlation length critical exponent takes the value $ν= 1.001 \pm 0.007$, compatible with $ν=1$ known exactly at the non-interacting critical point. We also show that other critical exponents, such as the dynamical exponent $z$ and a many-body analog of the fractal dimension are compatible with the exponents obtained at the non-interacting critical point. Noteworthy, we find that the transitions are accompanied by the emergence of a many-body generalization of previously found single-particle hidden dualities. Finally, we show that in the limit of vanishing interaction strength, all finite range interactions are irrelevant at the non-interacting critical point.

Faster Convergence with Lexicase Selection in Tree-based Automated Machine Learning

In many evolutionary computation systems, parent selection methods can affect, among other things, convergence to a solution. In this paper, we present a study comparing the role of two commonly used parent selection methods in evolving machine learning pipelines in an automated machine learning system called Tree-based Pipeline Optimization Tool (TPOT). Specifically, we demonstrate, using experiments on multiple datasets, that lexicase selection leads to significantly faster convergence as compared to NSGA-II in TPOT. We also compare the exploration of parts of the search space by these selection methods using a trie data structure that contains information about the pipelines explored in a particular run.

Delocalization of topological surface states by diagonal disorder in nodal loop semimetals

The effect of Anderson diagonal disorder on the topological surface (``drumhead'') states of a Weyl nodal loop semimetal is addressed. Since diagonal disorder breaks chiral symmetry, a winding number cannot be defined. Seen as a perturbation, the weak random potential mixes the clean exponentially localized drumhead states of the semimetal, thereby producing two effects: (i) the algebraic decay of the surface states into the bulk; (ii) a broadening of the low energy density of surface states of the open system due to degeneracy lifting. This behavior persists with increasing disorder, up to the bulk semimetal-to-metal transition at the critical disorder $W_{c}$. Above $W_{c}$, the surface states hybridize with bulk states and become extended into the bulk.

Efficient quantum information probes of non-equilibrium quantum criticality

Quantum information-based approaches, in particular the fidelity, have been flexible probes for phase boundaries of quantum matter. A major hurdle to a more widespread application of fidelity and other quantum information measures to strongly correlated quantum materials is the inaccessibility of the fidelity susceptibility to most state-of-the-art numerical methods. This is particularly apparent away from equilibrium where, at present, no general critical theory is available and many standard techniques fail. Motivated by the usefulness of quantum information based measures we show that a widely accessible quantity, the single-particle affinity, is able to serve as a versatile instrument to identify phase transitions beyond Landau's paradigm. We demonstrate that it not only is able to signal previously identified non-equilibrium phase transitions but also has the potential to detect hitherto unknown phases in models of quantum matter far from equilibrium.

Topological phase transitions for any taste in 2D quasiperiodic systems

In this paper we explore the effects of quasiperiodicity in paradigmatic models of Chern insulators. We identify a plethora of topological phase transitions and characterize them based on spectral and localization properties. Contrary to uncorrelated disorder, gap closing and reopening topological transitions can be induced by quasiperiodicity. These can separate widely different phases, including (i) trivial and Chern insulators, both with ballistic states near the gap edges; (ii) Chern insulators with critical states around the gap edges or (iii) Chern and trivial insulators respectively with ballistic and localized gap-edge states. Transition (i) is similar to clean-limit topological transitions due to the ballistic character of the gap-edge states, but at the same time resembles (quasi)disorder driven topological Anderson insulator phenomena. On the other hand, transitions (ii) and (iii) have no clean-limit counterpart. Additionally, quasiperiodicity can also induce topological transitions into a trivial state for which the gap closes and does not reopen, a scenario that resembles more what is observed with uncorrelated disorder. However, we found that such transitions can also be non-conventional in that they can be accompanied by the emergence of intermediate metallic and critical phases where the Chern number is not quantized. Our results show that a rich variety of topological phase transitions, not previously realized experimentally nor predicted theoretically can be attained when applying quasiperiodic modulations to simple Chern insulators. Such models have previously been realized experimentally in widely different platforms, including in optical lattices and photonic or acoustic media, where quasiperiodicity effects can be incorporated. The unveiled topological phase transitions can in principle be observed experimentally with state-of-the-art techniques.
