Securing a UAV Using Individual Characteristics From an EEG Signal

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained much attention in recent years for both commercial and military applications. The progress in this field has gained much popularity and the research has encompassed various fields of scientific domain. Cyber securing a UAV communication has been one of the active research field since the attack on Predator UAV video stream hijacking in 2009. Since UAVs rely heavily on on-board autopilot to function, it is important to develop an autopilot system that is robust to possible cyber attacks. In this work, we present a biometric system to encrypt the UAV communication by generating a key which is derived from Beta component of the EEG signal of a user. We have developed a safety mechanism that would be activated in case the communication of the UAV from the ground control station gets attacked. This system has been validated on a commercial UAV under malicious attack conditions during which we implement a procedure where the UAV return safely to a "home" position.

Design and performance of an absolute gas refractometer based on quasi-synthetic wavelength method

We present a refractometer which is capable of measuring the refractive index of gas with an unambiguous range of 1.000395 and uncertainty of 3.1E-8 at 633 nm absolutely. The measurement range is extended by means of a group of vacuum tubes according to the principle of quasi-synthetic wavelength (QSW) method. The basic principle of the QSW method and the design of the gas refractometer are presented in detail. The performance of the refractometer has been verified by the measurement of dry air, nitrogen gas and ambient air under different environmental situations. The gas-filling or pumping process is not needed during the measurement, so that we can complete a measurement within 70 seconds. Comparing with previous ones, the refractometer reported here has integrated virtues of large unambiguous range, fast speed, high accuracy, and a simple instrumentation design.

Absolute gas refractometer without gas-filling and pumping process benefiting from quasi-synthetic wavelength theory

We present a method to measure the refractive index of gas at 633 nm absolutely, which does not need filling or pumping gas during the measurement. We develop a quasi-synthetic wavelength (QSW) theory by means of the configuration of two-frequency Jamin interferometry and vacuum tubes with specific lengths. With the aid of the QSW theory, we construct a gas refractometer and demonstrate its performance by the measurement of dry air and nitrogen gas at different pressures ranging from 80 kPa to 100 kPa. The results indicate that the refractometer has an uncertainty of better than 1E-7 and a dynamic range of 3.95E-4.

Preliminary design of the Visible Spectro-Polarimeter for the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope

The Visible Spectro-Polarimeter (ViSP) is one of the first light instruments for the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST). It is an echelle spectrograph designed to measure three different regions of the solar spectrum in three separate focal planes simultaneously between 380 and 900 nm. It will use the polarimetric capabilities of the ATST to measure the full Stokes parameters across the line profiles. By measuring the polarization in magnetically sensitive spectral lines the magnetic field vector as a function of height in the solar atmosphere can be obtained, along with the associated variation of the thermodynamic properties. The ViSP will have a spatial resolution of 0.04 arcsec over a 2 arcmin field of view (at 600 nm). The minimum spectral resolving power for all the focal planes is 180,000. The spectrograph supports up to 4 diffraction gratings and is fully automated to allow for rapid reconfiguration.

Stray light and polarimetry considerations for the COSMO K-Coronagraph

The COSMO K-Coronagraph is scheduled to replace the aging Mk4 K-Coronameter at the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in 2013. We present briefly the science objectives and derived requirements, and the optical design. We single out two topics for more in-depth discussion: stray light, and performance of the camera and polarimeter.

Mobile Anchor Assisted Node Localization for Wireless Sensor Networks

In this paper, a cooperative localization algorithm is proposed that considers the existence of obstacles in mobilityassisted wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In this scheme, a mobile anchor (MA) node cooperates with static sensor nodes and moves actively to refine location performance. The localization accuracy of the proposed algorithm can be improved further by changing the transmission range of mobile anchor node. The algorithm takes advantage of cooperation betweenMAs and static sensors while, at the same time, taking into account the relay node availability to make the best use of beacon signals. For achieving high localization accuracy and coverage, a novel convex position estimation algorithm is proposed, which can effectively solve the localization problem when infeasible points occur because of the effects of radio irregularity and obstacles. This method is the only range-free based convex method to solve the localization problem when the feasible set of localization inequalities is empty. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this algorithm.
