3-Lie algebra $A_ω^δ$-modules and induced modules

In this paper, we define the induced modules of Lie algebra ad$(B)$ associated with a 3-Lie algebra $B$-module, and study the relation between 3-Lie algebra $A_ω^δ$-modules and induced modules of inner derivation algebra ad$(A_ω^δ)$. We construct two infinite dimensional intermediate series modules of 3-Lie algebra $A_ω^δ$, and two infinite dimensional modules $(V, ψ_{λμ})$ and $(V, ϕ_μ)$ of the Lie algebra ad$(A_ω^δ)$, and prove that only $(V, ψ_{\lambda0})$ and $(V, ψ_{\lambda1})$ are induced modules.

Realtime Scheduling and Power Allocation Using Deep Neural Networks

With the increasing number of base stations (BSs) and network densification in 5G, interference management using link scheduling and power control are vital for better utilization of radio resources. However, the complexity of solving link scheduling and the power control problem grows exponentially with the number of BS. Due to high computation time, previous methods are useful for research purposes but impractical for real time usage. In this paper we propose to use deep neural networks (DNNs) to approximate optimal link scheduling and power control for the case with multiple small cells. A deep Q-network (DQN) estimates a suitable schedule, then a DNN allocates power for the corresponding schedule. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves over five orders of magnitude speed-up with less than nine percent performance loss, making real time usage practical.

Spectral Efficiency Analysis of Multi-Cell Massive MIMO Systems with Ricean Fading

This paper investigates the spectral efficiency of multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output systems with Ricean fading that utilize the linear maximal-ratio combining detector. We firstly present closed-form expressions for the effective signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) with the least squares and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) estimation methods, respectively, which apply for any number of base-station antennas $M$ and any Ricean $K$-factor. Also, the obtained results can be particularized in Rayleigh fading conditions when the Ricean $K$-factor is equal to zero. In the following, novel exact asymptotic expressions of the effective SINR are derived in the high $M$ and high Ricean $K$-factor regimes. The corresponding analysis shows that pilot contamination is removed by the MMSE estimator when we consider both infinite $M$ and infinite Ricean $K$-factor, while the pilot contamination phenomenon persists for the rest of cases. All the theoretical results are verified via Monte-Carlo simulations.

Capacity Analysis for Full Duplex Self-backhauled Small Cells

Full duplex (FD) communication enables simultaneous transmission and reception on the same frequency band. Though it has the potential of doubling the throughput on isolated links, in reality, higher interference and asymmetric traffic demands in the uplink and downlink could significantly reduce the gains of FD operations. In this paper, we consider the application of FD operation in self-backhauled small cells, where multiple FD capable small cell base stations (SBS) are wirelessly backhauled by a FD capable macro-cell BS (MBS). To increase the capacity of the backhaul link, the MBS is equipped with multiple antennas to enable space division multiple access (SDMA). A scheduling method using back-pressure algorithm and geometric programming is proposed for link selection and interference mitigation. Simulation results show that with FD SDMA backhaul links, the proposed scheduler almost doubles throughput under asymmetric traffic demand and various network conditions.

Multipath Transmission Scheduling in Millimeter Wave Cloud Radio Access Networks

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications provide great potential for next-generation cellular networks to meet the demands of fast-growing mobile data traffic with plentiful spectrum available. However, in a mmWave cellular system, the shadowing and blockage effects lead to the intermittent connectivity, and the handovers are more frequent. This paper investigates an ``all-mmWave'' cloud radio access network (cloud-RAN), in which both the fronthaul and the radio access links operate at mmWave. To address the intermittent transmissions, we allow the mobile users (MUs) to establish multiple connections to the central unit over the remote radio heads (RRHs). Specifically, we propose a multipath transmission framework by leveraging the ``all-mmWave'' cloud-RAN architecture, which makes decisions of the RRH association and the packet transmission scheduling according to the time-varying network statistics, such that a MU experiences the minimum queueing delay and packet drops. The joint RRH association and transmission scheduling problem is formulated as a Markov decision process (MDP). Due to the problem size, a low-complexity online learning scheme is put forward, which requires no a priori statistic information of network dynamics. Simulations show that our proposed scheme outperforms the state-of-art baselines, in terms of average queue length and average packet dropping rate.

A deep learning approach to identify local structures in atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy images

Recording atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images is becoming increasingly routine. A new bottleneck is then analyzing this information, which often involves time-consuming manual structural identification. We have developed a deep learning-based algorithm for recognition of the local structure in TEM images, which is stable to microscope parameters and noise. The neural network is trained entirely from simulation but is capable of making reliable predictions on experimental images. We apply the method to single sheets of defected graphene, and to metallic nanoparticles on an oxide support.

Non-Isothermal Electrokinetics: Energetic Variational Approach

Fluid dynamics accompanies with the entropy production thus increases the local temperature, which plays an important role in charged systems such as the ion channel in biological environment and electrodiffusion in capacitors/batteries. In this article, we propose a general framework to derive the transport equations with heat flow through the Energetic Variational Approach. According to thermodynamic first law, the total energy is conserved and we can then use the Least Action Principle to derive the conservative forces. From thermodynamic second law, the entropy increases and the dissipative forces can be computed with the Maximum Dissipation Principle. Combining these two laws, we then conclude with the force balance equations and a temperature equation. To emphasis, our method provide a self consistent procedure to obtain dynamical equations satisfying proper energy laws and it not only works for the charge systems but also for general systems.

Modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck model with accurate Coulomb correlation in variable media

We derive a set of modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck (mPNP) equations for ion transport from the variation of the free energy functional which includes the many-body Coulomb correlation in media of variable dielectric coefficient. The correlation effects are considered through the Debye charging process in which the self energy of an ion is governed by the generalized Debye-Hückel equation. We develop the asymptotic expansions of the self energy taking the ion radius as the small parameter such that the multiscale model can be solved efficiently by numerical methods. It is shown that the variations of the energy functional give the self-energy-modified PNP equations which satisfy a proper weak formulation. We present numerical results from different asymptotic expansions with a semi-implicit conservative numerical method and investigate the effect of the Coulomb correlation.

Scheduling and Power Allocation in Self-Backhauled Full Duplex Small Cells

Full duplex (FD) communications, which increases spectral efficiency through simultaneous transmission and reception on the same frequency band, is a promising technology to meet the demand of next generation wireless networks. In this paper, we consider the application of such FD communication to self-backhauled small cells. We consider a FD capable small cell base station (BS) being wirelessly backhauled by a FD capable macro-cell BS. FD communication enables simultaneous backhaul and access transmissions at small cell BSs, which reduces the need to orthogonalize allocated spectrum between access and backhaul. However, in such simultaneous operations, all the links experience higher interference, which significantly suppresses the gains of FD operations. We propose an interference-aware scheduling method to maximize the FD gain across multiple UEs in both uplink and downlink directions, while maintaining a level of fairness between all UEs. It jointly schedules the appropriate links and traffic based on the back-pressure algorithm, and allocates appropriate transmission powers to the scheduled links using Geometric Programming. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheduler nearly doubles the throughput of small cells compared to traditional half-duplex self-backhauling.

Understanding depletion induced like-charge attraction from self-consistent field model

The interaction force between likely charged particles/surfaces is usually repulsive due to the Coulomb interaction. However, the counterintuitive like-charge attraction in electrolytes has been frequently observed in experiments, which has been theoretically debated for a long time. It is widely known that the mean field Poisson-Boltzmann theory cannot explain or predict this anomalous feature since it ignores many-body properties. In this paper, we develop efficient algorithm and perform the force calculation between two interfaces using a set of self-consistent equations which properly takes into account the electrostatic correlation and the dielectric-boundary effects. By solving the equations and calculating the pressure with the Debye-charging process, we show that the self-consistent equations could be used to study the attraction between like-charge surfaces from weak-coupling to mediate-coupling regime, and that the attraction is due to the electrostatics-driven entropic force which is significantly enhanced by the dielectric depletion of mobile ions. A systematic investigation shows that the interaction forces can be tuned by material permittivity, ionic size and valence, and salt concentration, and that the like-charge attraction exists only for specific regime of these parameters.

User Selection and Power Allocation in Full Duplex Multi-Cell Networks

Full duplex (FD) communications has the potential to double the capacity of a half duplex (HD) system at the link level. However, in a cellular network, FD operation is not a straightforward extension of half duplex operations. The increased interference due to a large number of simultaneous transmissions in FD operation and realtime traffic conditions limits the capacity improvement. Realizing the potential of FD requires careful coordination of resource allocation among the cells as well as within the cell. In this paper, we propose a distributed resource allocation, i.e., joint user selection and power allocation for a FD multi-cell system, assuming FD base stations (BSs) and HD user equipment (UEs). Due to the complexity of finding the globally optimum solution, a sub-optimal solution for UE selection, and a novel geometric programming based solution for power allocation, are proposed. The proposed distributed approach converges quickly and performs almost as well as a centralized solution, but with much lower signaling overhead. It provides a hybrid scheduling policy which allows FD operations whenever it is advantageous, but otherwise defaults to HD operation. We focus on small cell systems because they are more suitable for FD operation, given practical self-interference cancellation limits. With practical self-interference cancellation, it is shown that the proposed hybrid FD system achieves nearly two times throughput improvement for an indoor multi-cell scenario, and about 65% improvement for an outdoor multi-cell scenario compared to the HD system.

Pilot Power Allocation Through User Grouping in Multi-Cell Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, we propose a relative channel estimation error (RCEE) metric, and derive closed-form expressions for its expectation $\rm {Exp}_{rcee}$ and the achievable uplink rate holding for any number of base station antennas $M$, with the least squares (LS) and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) estimation methods. It is found that RCEE and $\rm {Exp}_{rcee}$ converge to the same constant value when $M\rightarrow\infty$, resulting in the pilot power allocation (PPA) is substantially simplified and a PPA algorithm is proposed to minimize the average $\rm {Exp}_{rcee}$ per user with a total pilot power budget $P$ in multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. Numerical results show that the PPA algorithm brings considerable gains for the LS estimation compared with equal PPA (EPPA), while the gains are only significant with large frequency reuse factor (FRF) for the MMSE estimation. Moreover, for large FRF and large $P$, the performance of the LS approaches to the performance of the MMSE, which means that simple LS estimation method is a very viable when co-channel interference is small. For the achievable uplink rate, the PPA scheme delivers almost the same average achievable uplink rate and improves the minimum achievable uplink rate compared with the EPPA scheme.

Full Duplex Operation for Small Cells

Full duplex (FD) communications has the potential to double the capacity of a half duplex (HD) system at the link level. However, FD operation increases the aggregate interference on each communication link, which limits the capacity improvement. In this paper, we investigate how much of the potential doubling can be practically achieved in the resource-managed, small multi-cellular system, similar to the TDD variant of LTE, both in indoor and outdoor environments, assuming FD base stations (BSs) and HD user equipment (UEs). We focus on low-powered small cellular systems, because they are more suitable for FD operation given practical self-interference cancellation limits. A joint UE selection and power allocation method for a multi-cell scenario is presented, where a hybrid scheduling policy assigns FD timeslots when it provides a throughput advantage by pairing UEs with appropriate power levels to mitigate the mutual interference, but otherwise defaults to HD operation. Due to the complexity of finding the globally optimum solution of the proposed algorithm, a sub-optimal method based on a heuristic greedy algorithm for UE selection, and a novel solution using geometric programming for power allocation, is proposed. With practical self-interference cancellation, antennas and circuits, it is shown that the proposed hybrid FD system achieves as much as 94% throughput improvement in the downlink, and 92% in the uplink, compared to a HD system in an indoor multi-cell scenario and 54% in downlink and 61% in uplink in an outdoor multi-cell scenario. Further, we also compare the energy efficiency of FD operation.

Directional Cell Discovery in Millimeter Wave Cellular Networks

The acute disparity between increasing bandwidth demand and available spectrum, has brought millimeter wave (mmW) bands to the forefront of candidate solutions for the next-generation cellular networks. Highly directional transmissions are essential for cellular communication in these frequencies to compensate for high isotropic path loss. This reliance on directional beamforming, however, complicates initial cell search since the mobile and base station must jointly search over a potentially large angular directional space to locate a suitable path to initiate communication. To address this problem, this paper proposes a directional cell discovery procedure where base stations periodically transmit synchronization signals, potentially in time-varying random directions, to scan the angular space. Detectors for these signals are derived based on a Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) under various signal and receiver assumptions. The detectors are then simulated under realistic design parameters and channels based on actual experimental measurements at 28~GHz in New York City. The study reveals two key findings: (i) digital beamforming can significantly outperform analog beamforming even when the digital beamforming uses very low quantization to compensate for the additional power requirements; and (ii) omni-directional transmissions of the synchronization signals from the base station generally outperforms random directional scanning.

Self-energy-modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations: WKB approximation and finite-difference approaches

We propose a modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) model to investigate charge transport in electrolytes of inhomogeneous dielectric environment. The model includes the ionic polarization due to the dielectric inhomogeneity and the ion-ion correlation. This is achieved by the self energy of test ions through solving a generalized Debye-Hückel (DH) equation. We develop numerical methods for the system composed of the PNP and DH equations. Particularly, towards the numerical challenge of solving the high-dimensional DH equation, we developed an analytical WKB approximation and a numerical approach based on the selective inversion of sparse matrices. The model and numerical methods are validated by simulating the charge diffusion in electrolytes between two electrodes, for which effects of dielectrics and correlation are investigated by comparing the results with the prediction by the classical PNP theory. We find that, at the length scale of the interface separation comparable to the Bjerrum length, the results of the modified equations are significantly different from the classical PNP predictions mostly due to the dielectric effect. It is also shown that when the ion self energy is in weak or mediate strength, the WKB approximation presents a high accuracy, compared to precise finite-difference results.

The Urge to Merge: When Cellular Service Providers Pool Capacity

As cellular networks are turning into a platform for ubiquitous data access, cellular operators are facing a severe data capacity crisis due to the exponential growth of traffic generated by mobile users. In this work, we investigate the benefits of sharing infrastructure and spectrum among two cellular operators. Specifically, we provide a multi-cell analytical model using stochastic geometry to identify the performance gain under different sharing strategies, which gives tractable and accurate results. To validate the performance using a realistic setting, we conduct extensive simulations for a multi-cell OFDMA system using real base station locations. Both analytical and simulation results show that even a simple cooperation strategy between two similar operators, where they share spectrum and base stations, roughly quadruples capacity as compared to the capacity of a single operator. This is equivalent to doubling the capacity per customer, providing a strong incentive for operators to cooperate, if not actually merge.

STiCMAC: A MAC Protocol for Robust Space-Time Coding in Cooperative Wireless LANs

Relay-assisted cooperative wireless communication has been shown to have significant performance gains over the legacy direct transmission scheme. Compared with single relay based cooperation schemes, utilizing multiple relays further improves the reliability and rate of transmissions. Distributed space-time coding (DSTC), as one of the schemes to utilize multiple relays, requires tight coordination between relays and does not perform well in a distributed environment with mobility. In this paper, a cooperative medium access control (MAC) layer protocol, called \emph{STiCMAC}, is designed to allow multiple relays to transmit at the same time in an IEEE 802.11 network. The transmission is based on a novel DSTC scheme called \emph{randomized distributed space-time coding} (\emph{R-DSTC}), which requires minimum coordination. Unlike conventional cooperation schemes that pick nodes with good links, \emph{STiCMAC} picks a \emph{transmission mode} that could most improve the end-to-end data rate. Any station that correctly receives from the source can act as a relay and participate in forwarding. The MAC protocol is implemented in a fully decentralized manner and is able to opportunistically recruit relays on the fly, thus making it \emph{robust} to channel variations and user mobility. Simulation results show that the network capacity and delay performance are greatly improved, especially in a mobile environment.
