Towards Standardizing Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing (AFDM) for Future Wireless Networks

Affine frequency division multiplexing~(AFDM) has emerged as a compelling waveform candidate for future wireless networks, owing to its strong resilience to doubly selective channels and its ability to enable the seamless integration of communication and sensing functionalities. Against this context, this article provides a systematic study of AFDM from a standardization perspective. We first introduce the principles of AFDM and discuss the major considerations involved in waveform standardization. We then examine the backwards compatibility of AFDM with 4G/5G multi-numerology frameworks and their anticipated evolution, frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar waveforms, and long-range (LoRa) modulation, demonstrating that AFDM can be incorporated into legacy processing chains with limited modification. Key standardization-critical capabilities are further discussed, including multiple-antenna and multi-user support, and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Finally, we investigate the potential of AFDM in several emerging scenarios, including non-terrestrial networks~(NTN), integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), vehicle-to-everything (V2X), and underwater acoustic (UWA) communications, whereby severe delay-Doppler dispersion places stringent demands on waveform robustness. Through these explorations, it is shown that that AFDM represents a timely and compelling technology for future wireless networks.

Beyond the RF Paradigm: Rydberg Atomic Receivers for Next-Generation IoT

Next-generation Internet-of-Things (IoT) is evolving toward a ubiquitous, ultra-low-power, and multi-band heterogeneous networking paradigm that seamlessly integrates terrestrial, non-terrestrial, and ambient devices. This vision places unprecedented demands on conventional radio frequency (RF) receivers, whose fundamental bottlenecks in sensitivity, power consumption, coverage, and multi-band operation are rooted in the RF antenna. To tackle these issues, we show that the quantum properties of Rydberg atomic quantum receivers (RAQRs), including ultra-high sensitivity, broad frequency agility, and diverse reception modalities, provide a physically distinct receiver-side path that replaces the conventional antenna-and-low-noise-amplifier chain. Using LoRa, narrowband IoT, and ambient IoT as case studies, this article shows that RAQRs deliver significant gains in weak-uplink, low-power, and battery-free regimes. A stochastic-geometry analysis in cellular and cell-free architectures then maps these device-level gains onto network coverage, where the RAQR retains roughly a 4 dB half-coverage advantage over the RF receiver in sparse deployments at \(λ\sim 10^{-5}~{\mathrm m}^{-2}\), with the gain eroded as device density grows. The open challenges are presented to stand between current RAQR prototypes and deployable IoT infrastructure.

Hybrid Bit and Semantic Communications for UAV-Enabled Wireless Power Transfer Networks: A Decision-Assisted Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

Semantic communications which can significantly reduce spectrum consumption in wireless networks, have recently become a popular research area. When combined with wireless power transfer (WPT), semantic communications can help achieve high spectral efficiency for energy-limited devices in wireless communications. In energy-constrained and link budget-limited scenarios such as UAV networks, the integration of semantic communications and WPT enables highly energyefficient transmission mechanisms. In this paper, we investigate semantic communications in UAV-enabled WPT networks. To achieve adaptability to varying signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and task requirements, we introduce a multi-layer hybrid bit and semantic communication framework. We adopt a semantic communication efficiency metric and aim to maximize it by jointly optimizing UAV trajectory, energy harvesting base station (EHBS) selection, user association, semantic mode selection, and energy harvesting time allocation. To address this complex longterm optimization problem, we introduce the distributional soft actor-critic (DSAC) algorithm and introduce a decision assistant to further enhance the convergence performance of DSAC. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method and framework and demonstrate that our algorithm can achieve superior long-term optimization performance in dynamic network environments.

PipeSD: An Efficient Cloud-Edge Collaborative Pipeline Inference Framework with Speculative Decoding

Speculative decoding can significantly accelerate LLM inference, especially given that its cloud-edge collaborative deployment offers cloud workload offloading, offline robustness, and privacy enhancement. However, existing collaborative inference frameworks with speculative decoding are constrained by (i) sequential token generation and communication with low resource utilization, and (ii) inflexible cloud non-autoregressive verification (NAV) triggering that induces premature verification or costly rollbacks. In this paper, we propose PipeSD, an efficient cloud-edge collaborative pipeline inference framework with speculative decoding. PipeSD overlaps token generation and communication by a token-batch pipeline scheduling mechanism optimized by dynamic programming, and improves verification flexibility through a dual-threshold NAV triggering mechanism with a lightweight Bayesian optimization autotuner. We implement PipeSD using llama-cpp-python, PyTorch, and FastAPI, and evaluate it on a real-world cloud-edge testbed with two draft-target model pairs across four scenarios. Results show that PipeSD consistently outperforms state-of-the-art baselines, achieving 1.16x-2.16x speedup and reducing energy consumption by 14.3%-25.3%.

Deep Mixture of Experts Network for Resource Optimization in Aerial-Terrestrial CF-mMIMO Systems under URLLC

As a critical component of sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks, ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) is expected to support real-time and reliable information exchange in low-altitude environments. However, achieving URLLC often incurs significant resource overhead, including increased bandwidth consumption, higher transmit power, and denser access point (AP) deployment, which pose significant challenges to both spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). Besides, existing iterative optimization algorithms are computationally intensive and struggle to meet the latency requirements of URLLC. To address these challenges, we propose a hybrid aerial-terrestrial cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) network to support diverse services, along with a channel prediction network and a deep mixture of experts (MoE) network for uplink optimization. First, we design a channel prediction network (CP-Net) to mitigate channel aging caused by high-mobility user equipment (UE). CP-Net employs three Transformer-based sub-networks for aged channel state information (CSI) prediction, while a channel quality-aware loss function is introduced to improve the prediction accuracy of weak links. Based on the predicted CSI, we develop a deep MoE network (MoE-Net) for power allocation comprising three expert models targeting different objectives. Then, we introduce a weighted gating network (WT-Net) to learn an efficient adaptive combination of expert outputs. The proposed framework better captures heterogeneous UE requirements and improves communication performance under URLLC constraints. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Signal-Dependent Shot Noise Modeling of Rydberg Atomic Quantum Receivers: A Design Perspective

In this paper, we develop a communication-oriented complex baseband equivalent model for superheterodyne Rydberg atomic quantum receivers (RAQRs). The model explicitly captures photodetection-induced signal-dependent shot noise and its coupling with the optical operating point. By leveraging an atomic superheterodyne architecture and a strong local oscillator, we construct a complex baseband representation for both the received signal and the signal-dependent shot noise under both direct incoherent optical detection and balanced coherent optical detection. The derived model reveals that the optical operating point jointly determines the normalized effective receive gain and the equivalent noise background, thereby establishing a traceable gain-noise tradeoff governed by system design. More importantly, the proposed model shows that neglecting signal-dependent shot noise may lead to inaccurate operating-point design. Finally, by extending to the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) case, we derive a lower bound on the achievable rate while considering the signal-dependent shot noise. Our analysis \textcolor{black}{reveals} that the non-zero asymptotic rate of RAQ-MIMO and its superiority over conventional RF-MIMO hinge on the normalized noise floor of the RAQ receive chain falling below that of RF MIMO. Simulation results validate our analysis and yield practical, closed-form design guidelines for RAQR front ends, revealing parameter regimes in which RAQ-MIMO outperforms conventional MIMO systems.

Joint Beamforming and Position Optimization for FIRES-NOMA Assisted Wireless Communication Systems

To address the limitations of conventional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in spatial control capability, this paper proposes a fluid integrated reflecting and emitting surface (FIRES) assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) multi-user communication system. In this system, each FIRES element can continuously and flexibly adjust its position in response to environmental variations, enabling simultaneous service to users in both transmission and reflection zones. This significantly enhances the system's spatial degrees of freedom (DoF) and service adaptability. To maximize the system's total sum rate, we formulate a non-convex optimization problem that jointly optimizes the base station beamforming, the transmission/reflection coefficients of the FIRES, and the element positions. An alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is developed, incorporating successive convex approximation (SCA), semi-definite relaxation (SDR), and majorization-minimization (MM) techniques. In particular, to address the complex channel coupling introduced by the coexistence of direct and FIRES paths, the MM framework is employed in the element position optimization subproblem, enabling an efficient iterative solution strategy. Simulation results validate that the proposed system achieves up to a 27% increase in total sum rate compared to conventional STAR-RIS systems and requires approximately 50% fewer RIS elements to attain the same performance, highlighting its effectiveness for cost-efficient large-scale deployment.

Secure Intellicise Wireless Network: Agentic AI for Coverless Semantic Steganography Communication

Semantic Communication (SemCom), leveraging its significant advantages in transmission efficiency and reliability, has emerged as a core technology for constructing future intellicise (intelligent and concise) wireless networks. However, intelligent attacks represented by semantic eavesdropping pose severe challenges to the security of SemCom. To address this challenge, Semantic Steganographic Communication (SemSteCom) achieves ``invisible'' encryption by implicitly embedding private semantic information into cover modality carriers. The state-of-the-art study has further introduced generative diffusion models to directly generate stega images without relying on original cover images, effectively enhancing steganographic capacity. Nevertheless, the recovery process of private images is highly dependent on the guidance of private semantic keys, which may be inferred by intelligent eavesdroppers, thereby introducing new security threats. To address this issue, we propose an Agentic AI-driven SemSteCom (AgentSemSteCom) scheme, which includes semantic extraction, digital token controlled reference image generation, coverless steganography, semantic codec, and optional task-oriented enhancement modules. The proposed AgentSemSteCom scheme obviates the need for both cover images and private semantic keys, thereby boosting steganographic capacity while reinforcing transmission security. The simulation results on open-source datasets verify that, AgentSemSteCom achieves better transmission quality and higher security levels than the baseline scheme.

Ultra-Massive MIMO with Orthogonal Chirp Division Multiplexing for Near-Field Sensing and Communication Integration

This paper integrates the emerging ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO) technique with orthogonal chirp division multiplexing (OCDM) waveform to tackle the challenging near-field integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) problem. Specifically, we conceive a comprehensive ISAC architecture, where an UM-MIMO base station adopts OCDM waveform for communications and a co-located sensing receiver adopts the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) detection principle to simplify the associated hardware. For sensing tasks, several OCDM subcarriers, namely, dedicated sensing subcarriers (DSSs), are each transmitted through a dedicated sensing antenna (DSA) within the transmit antenna array. By judiciously designing the DSS selection scheme and optimizing receiver parameters, the FMCW-based sensing receiver can decouple the echo signals from different DSAs with significantly reduced hardware complexity. This setup enables the estimation of ranges and velocities of near-field targets in an antenna-pairwise manner. Moreover, by leveraging the spatial diversity of UM-MIMO, we introduce the concept of virtual bistatic sensing (VIBS), which incorporates the estimates from multiple antenna pairs to achieve high-accuracy target positioning and three-dimensional velocity measurement. The VIBS paradigm is immune to hostile channel environments characterized by spatial non-stationarity and uncorrelated multipath environment. Furthermore, the channel estimation of UM-MIMO OCDM systems enhanced by the sensing results is investigated. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed ISAC scheme enhances sensing accuracy, and also benefits communication performance.

Towards Semantic-based Agent Communication Networks: Vision, Technologies, and Challenges

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) identifies "Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Communication" as one of six key usage scenarios for 6G. Agentic AI, characterized by its ca-pabilities in multi-modal environmental sensing, complex task coordination, and continuous self-optimization, is anticipated to drive the evolution toward agent-based communication net-works. Semantic communication (SemCom), in turn, has emerged as a transformative paradigm that offers task-oriented efficiency, enhanced reliability in complex environments, and dynamic adaptation in resource allocation. However, comprehensive reviews that trace their technologi-cal evolution in the contexts of agent communications remain scarce. Addressing this gap, this paper systematically explores the role of semantics in agent communication networks. We first propose a novel architecture for semantic-based agent communication networks, structured into three layers, four entities, and four stages. Three wireless agent network layers define the logical structure and organization of entity interactions: the intention extraction and understanding layer, the semantic encoding and processing layer, and the distributed autonomy and collabora-tion layer. Across these layers, four AI agent entities, namely embodied agents, communication agents, network agents, and application agents, coexist and perform distinct tasks. Furthermore, four operational stages of semantic-enhanced agentic AI systems, namely perception, memory, reasoning, and action, form a cognitive cycle guiding agent behavior. Based on the proposed architecture, we provide a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art on how semantics en-hance agent communication networks. Finally, we identify key challenges and present potential solutions to offer directional guidance for future research in this emerging field.

Discrete-Time CRLB-based Power Allocation for CF MIMO-ISAC with Joint Localization and Velocity Sensing

In this paper, we investigate integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in a cell-free (CF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network, where each access point functions either as an ISAC transmitter or as a sensing receiver. We devote into the ISAC sensing metric using the discrete-time signal-based Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) for joint location and velocity estimation under arbitrary power allocation ratios under the deterministic radar cross section assumption (RCS). Then, we consider the power allocation optimization problem for the CF MIMO-ISAC as the maximization of the communication signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), subject to CRLB-based sensing constraints and per-transmitter power limits. To solve the resulting nonlinear and non-convex problem, we propose a penalty function and projection-based modified conjugate gradient algorithm with inexact line search (PP-MCG-ILS), and an alternative method based on a modified steepest descent approach (PP-MSD-ILS). We show that the proposed algorithms are scalable and can be extended to a broad class of optimization problems involving nonlinear inequality constraints and affine equality constraints. In addition, we extend the PP-MCG-ILS algorithm to the pure sensing scenario, where a penalty function-based normalized conjugate gradient algorithm (P-NCG-ILS) is developed for sensing power minimization. Finally, we analyze the convergence behavior and qualitatively compare the computational complexity of the proposed algorithms. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of the derived CRLBs and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed power allocation strategies in enhancing both sensing and overall ISAC performance.

Semantic Transmission Framework in Direct Satellite Communications

Insufficient link budget has become a bottleneck problem for direct access in current satellite communications. In this paper, we develop a semantic transmission framework for direct satellite communications as an effective and viable solution to tackle this problem. To measure the tradeoffs between communication, computation, and generation quality, we introduce a semantic efficiency metric with optimized weights. The optimization aims to maximize the average semantic efficiency metric by jointly optimizing transmission mode selection, satellite-user association, ISL task migration, denoising steps, and adaptive weights, which is a complex nonlinear integer programming problem. To maximize the average semantic efficiency metric, we propose a decision-assisted REINFORCE++ algorithm that utilizes feasibility-aware action space and a critic-free stabilized policy update. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm achieves higher semantic efficiency than baselines.

EARL: Energy-Aware Adaptive Antenna Control with Reinforcement Learning in O-RAN Cell-Free Massive MIMO Networks

Cell-free massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) promises uniform high performance across the network, but also brings a high energy cost due to joint transmission from distributed radio units (RUs) and centralized processing in the cloud. Leveraging the resource-sharing capabilities of Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN), we propose EARL, an energy-aware adaptive antenna control framework based on reinforcement learning. EARL dynamically configures antenna elements in RUs to minimize radio, optical fronthaul, and cloud processing power consumption while meeting user spectral efficiency demands. Numerical results show power savings of up to 81% and 50% over full-on and heuristic baselines, respectively. The RL-based approach operates within 220 ms, satisfying O-RAN's near-real-time limit, and a greedy refinement further halves power consumption at a 2 s runtime.

A Survey on Parallel Text Generation: From Parallel Decoding to Diffusion Language Models

As text generation has become a core capability of modern Large Language Models (LLMs), it underpins a wide range of downstream applications. However, most existing LLMs rely on autoregressive (AR) generation, producing one token at a time based on previously generated context-resulting in limited generation speed due to the inherently sequential nature of the process. To address this challenge, an increasing number of researchers have begun exploring parallel text generation-a broad class of techniques aimed at breaking the token-by-token generation bottleneck and improving inference efficiency. Despite growing interest, there remains a lack of comprehensive analysis on what specific techniques constitute parallel text generation and how they improve inference performance. To bridge this gap, we present a systematic survey of parallel text generation methods. We categorize existing approaches into AR-based and Non-AR-based paradigms, and provide a detailed examination of the core techniques within each category. Following this taxonomy, we assess their theoretical trade-offs in terms of speed, quality, and efficiency, and examine their potential for combination and comparison with alternative acceleration strategies. Finally, based on our findings, we highlight recent advancements, identify open challenges, and outline promising directions for future research in parallel text generation. We have also created a GitHub repository for indexing relevant papers and open resources available at https://github.com/zhanglingzhe0820/Awesome-Parallel-Text-Generation.

Enhanced Ground-Satellite Direct Access via Onboard Rydberg Atomic Quantum Receivers

Ground-satellite links for 6G networks face critical challenges, including severe path loss, tight size-weight-power limits, and congested spectrum, all of which significantly hinder the performance of traditional radio frequency (RF) front ends. This article introduces the Rydberg Atomic Quantum Receiver (RAQR) for onboard satellite systems, a millimeter-scale front end that converts radio fields to optical signals through atomic electromagnetically induced transparency. RAQR's high sensitivity and high frequency selectivity address link budget, payload, and interference challenges while fitting within space constraints. A hybrid atomic-electronic design and supporting signal model demonstrate enhanced data rate, coverage, and sensing accuracy relative to conventional RF receivers. The article concludes with integration strategies, distributed-satellite concepts, and open research problems for bringing RAQR-enabled satellite payloads into service.

Hypothesize-Then-Verify: Speculative Root Cause Analysis for Microservices with Pathwise Parallelism

Microservice systems have become the backbone of cloud-native enterprise applications due to their resource elasticity, loosely coupled architecture, and lightweight deployment. Yet, the intrinsic complexity and dynamic runtime interactions of such systems inevitably give rise to anomalies. Ensuring system reliability therefore hinges on effective root cause analysis (RCA), which entails not only localizing the source of anomalies but also characterizing the underlying failures in a timely and interpretable manner. Recent advances in intelligent RCA techniques, particularly those powered by large language models (LLMs), have demonstrated promising capabilities, as LLMs reduce reliance on handcrafted features while offering cross-platform adaptability, task generalization, and flexibility. However, existing LLM-based methods still suffer from two critical limitations: (a) limited exploration diversity, which undermines accuracy, and (b) heavy dependence on large-scale LLMs, which results in slow inference. To overcome these challenges, we propose SpecRCA, a speculative root cause analysis framework for microservices that adopts a \textit{hypothesize-then-verify} paradigm. SpecRCA first leverages a hypothesis drafting module to rapidly generate candidate root causes, and then employs a parallel root cause verifier to efficiently validate them. Preliminary experiments on the AIOps 2022 dataset demonstrate that SpecRCA achieves superior accuracy and efficiency compared to existing approaches, highlighting its potential as a practical solution for scalable and interpretable RCA in complex microservice environments.

Uplink SCMA-empowered Uncoordinated Random Access for Future mMTC

In this paper, a novel uncoordinated random access (URA) protocol is presented to address the pressing demand for massive connectivity with low access latency in future massive machine type communication (mMTC) scenarios. The proposed URA scheme integrates the classical slotted ALOHA (S-ALOHA) protocol with sparse code multiple access (SCMA) technique, referred to as SCMA-empowered URA. Specifically, active users randomly choose an SCMA codebook to access the communication network in an arbitrary time slot whenever they want without scheduling. However, due to the lack of central coordination in the proposed URA scheme, SCMA codebook collisions become inevitable, making decoding challenging and leading to increased access failures. To cope with the decoding issue, an interference-canceling (IC) first decoding strategy is proposed at the access point (AP), which can partially tackles collision problems, contributing to a higher system throughput. Taking the proposed IC-first decoding strategy into account, a closed-form theoretical expression of the throughput is derived. Moreover, to alleviate the throughput degradation under the congested user traffic, a user barring mechanism is introduced to manage the traffic load. Firstly, a closed-form expression of idle codebook probability is developed to help indicate the system state, i.e., congested or not. Then, in addition to the estimated real-time load, the AP adaptively adjusts the access probability and redistributes the actual access load. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SCMA-empowered URA scheme enjoys higher maximum throughput, compared to the conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) based URA scheme. Moreover, the accuracy of the presented theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the user barring mechanism are verified.
