Direct Extraction of Nuclear Structure Information Using Precision Lithium-Ion Spectroscopy

Accurately describing nuclear interactions within atomic nuclei remains a challenge, which hinders our exploration of new physics beyond the Standard Model. However, these nuclear interactions can be characterized by nuclear parameters such as the Zemach radius and the electric quadrupole moment, which are reflected in atomic spectra. Our work has achieved high-precision measurements of lithium ion hyperfine splittings at the level of $10$~kHz, and directly extracted these important nuclear structure parameters. We observed significant discrepancies between our results and both nuclear theory and molecular spectra regarding the electric quadrupole moment. The result for $^7$Li deviated by $2.3σ$ from the currently recommended value, whereas the result for $^6$Li deviated by up to $6.2σ$ from the recommended value determined by molecular spectroscopy. These discrepancies motivated us to conduct independent calculations based on nuclear structure theory, which provided support for the results obtained from ion spectroscopy. Our results provide valuable information for characterizing nuclear forces, serve as sensitive benchmarks for testing nuclear structure theories, and enable critical comparisons with both electron-nuclear scattering and molecular spectroscopy.

Revised $^3$He nuclear charge radius due to electronic hyperfine mixing

The significant discrepancy in the difference of squared nuclear charge radii $ΔR^2$ of $^{3,4}$He obtained from electronic-atom or muonic-atom energy levels is a puzzle. In this paper, we show that the tension is resolved by including off-diagonal mixing effects due to the hyperfine interaction. Our findings indicate that the hyperfine mixing effect from the $n\,^3\!S$ and $n\,^1\!S$ states ($n>2$) of $^3$He leads to a $-1.37$ kHz adjustment in the isotope shift of the $2\,^1\!S-2\,^3\!S$ transition, surpassing the current uncertainty by a factor of $7$. This results in a change of $-0.0064~\rm{fm}^2$ in $ΔR^2$, shifting from $1.0757(15)~\mathrm{fm}^2$ to $1.0693(15)~\mathrm{fm}^2$ as determined by Werf {\it et al.}, significantly reducing the discrepancy with the value of $1.0636(31)~\mathrm{fm}^2$ determined by $μ\rm{He}^+$, and aligning with the result of $1.069(3)$ $\mathrm{fm}^2$ obtained from the $2\,^3\!S-2\,^3\!P$ transition. This adjustment will result in a noticeable change in the absolute nuclear charge radius of $^{3}$He by $-0.0017~\rm{fm}$, aligning the revised value of $1.9715(11)~\mathrm{fm}$ with the value of $1.97007(94)~\mathrm{fm}$ determined by $μ^3\rm{He}^+$ within $1σ$. Our results offer crucial insights into resolving discrepancy in $ΔR^2$ for $^{3,4}$He and determining the charge radius of $^3$He.

Galactic diffuse emission from radio to ultra-high-energy gamma rays in light of up-to-date cosmic ray measurements

Cosmic rays travel throughout the Galaxy, leaving traces from radio to ultra-high-energy gamma rays due to interactions with the interstellar gas, radiation field and magnetic field. Therefore, it is necessary to utilize multi-wavelength investigations on the Galactic diffuse emission to shed light on the physics of CR production and propagation. In this work, we present a spatially dependent propagation scenario, taking account of a local source contribution, while making allowances for an additional CR component freshly accelerated near their sources. In this picture, after reproducing the particle measurements at the Solar system, we calculated the intensity and compared the spectral energy distribution to observations from Fermi-LAT and LHAASO-KM2A in the gamma-ray band, and from WMAP and Planck among other radio surveys at lower energies. Multi-band data considered in conjunction, the former comparison exhibits sufficiently good consistency in favor of our model, while the latter calls for improvement in data subtraction and processing. From this standpoint, there remains potential for advanced observations at energies from milli-eVs to MeVs towards the Galactic plane, in order to evaluate our model further and more comprehensively in the future.

Multi-messenger observations support cosmic ray interactions surrounding acceleration sources

The observations of the energy spectra of cosmic-ray have revealed complicated structures. Especially, spectral hardenings in the boron-to-carbon and boron-to-oxygen ratios above $\sim 200$ GV has been revealed by AMS-02 and DAMPE experiments. One scenario to account for the hardenings of secondary-to-primary ratios is the nuclear fragmentation of freshly accelerated particles around sources. In this work, we further study this scenario based on new observations of Galactic diffuse gamma rays by LHAASO and neutrinos by IceCube. We find that the spectra of cosmic ray nuclei, the diffuse ultra-high-energy gamma rays, and the Galactic component of neutrinos can be simultaneously explained, given an average confinement and interaction time of $\sim 0.25$ Myr around sources. These multi-messenger data thus provide evidence of non-negligible grammage of Galactic cosmic rays surrounding sources besides the traditional one during the propagation.

Measurement of hyperfine structure and the Zemach radius in $\rm^6Li^+$ using optical Ramsey technique

We investigate the $2\,^3\!S_1$--$2\,^3\!P_J$ ($J = 0, 1, 2$) transitions in $\rm^6Li^+$ using the optical Ramsey technique and achieve the most precise values of the hyperfine splittings of the $2\,^3\!S_1$ and $2\,^3\!P_J$ states, with smallest uncertainty of about 10~kHz. The present results reduce the uncertainties of previous experiments by a factor of 5 for the $2\,^3\!S_1$ state and a factor of 50 for the $2\,^3\!P_J$ states, and are in better agreement with theoretical values. Combining our measured hyperfine intervals of the $2\,^3\!S_1$ state with the latest quantum electrodynamic (QED) calculations, the improved Zemach radius of the $\rm^6Li$ nucleus is determined to be 2.44(2)~fm, with the uncertainty entirely due to the uncalculated QED effects of order $mα^7$. The result is in sharp disagreement with the value 3.71(16) fm determined from simple models of the nuclear charge and magnetization distribution. We call for a more definitive nuclear physics value of the $\rm^6Li$ Zemach radius.

Evidence of fresh cosmic ray in galactic plane based on DAMPE measurement of B/C and B/O ratios

More and more experiments have identified that the energy spectra of both primary and secondary cosmic-rays exhibit a hardening above $\sim 200$ GV. Most recently, the DAMPE experiment has reported a hardening of boron-to-carbon ratio at $200$ GV. These signs call for modifications of the conventional cosmic-ray (CR) picture. In this work, we propose that the plethoric secondary cosmic rays, for example, boron, antiprotons, originate from the hadronic interactions of freshly accelerated cosmic rays with the interstellar gas near the sources. We find that secondary-to-primary ratios, for example, boron-to-carbon, boron-to-oxygen and antiproton-to-proton ratios, could be well described. The measurements of electrons and positrons could also be accounted for.

Application of the correlated B-spline basis functions to the leading relativistic and QED corrections of helium

B-spline functions have been widely used in computational atomic physics. Different from the traditional B-spline basis (a simple product of two B-splines), the recently developed correlated B-spline basis functions(C-BSBF), in which the interelectronic coordinate $r_{12}$ is included explicitly, have greatly improved the computational accuracy of polarizability [S. J. Yang \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. A \textbf{95}, 062505 (2017)] and bethe logarithm [ S. J. Yang \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. A \textbf{100}, 042509 (2019)] for singlet states of helium. Here, we report the extension of the C-BSBF to the leading relativistic and QED correction calculations for energy levels of the $1\,^1S$, $2\,^1S$, $2\,^3S$, and $3\,^3S$ states of helium. The relativistic kinetic term $p_{1}^{4}$, contact potential $δ^{3}(r_{1})$, $δ^{3}(r_{12})$ and Araki-Sucher correction $\langle 1/r_{12}^{3} \rangle$ are calculated by using the global operator method, in which $r_{12}^n$ and $r_{12}^n\ln r_{12}$ involved are calculated with the generalization of Laplace's expansions. The obtained values for the ground state are $δE_{rel}/α^{2}=-$1.951 754 7(2) and $δE_{QED}/α^{3}=$57.288 165(2), consistent with previous results, which opens the possibility of calculating higher-order relativistic and QED effects using the C-BSBF.

Precision calculation of hyperfine structure of $^{7,9}$Be$^{2+}$ ions

The hyperfine structures of the $2\,^3\!S_1$ and $2\,^3\!P_J$ states of the $^7$Be$^{2+}$ and $^9$Be$^{2+}$ ions are investigated within the framework of the nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics (NRQED). The uncertainties of present hyperfine splitting results of $^9$Be$^{2+}$ are in the order of several tens of ppm, where two orders of magnitude improvement over the previous theory and experiment values has been achieved. The contribution of nuclear electric quadrupole moment to hyperfine splitting of $^7$Be$^{2+}$ has been studied. A scheme for determining the properties of Be nuclei in terms of Zemach radius or the electric quadrupole moment based on precise spectra is proposed, and it opens a new window for the study of Be nuclei.

Precision calculation of hyperfine structure and the Zemach radii of $^{6,7}$Li$^+$ ions

The hyperfine structures of the $2\,^3\!S_1$ states of the $^6$Li$^+$ and $^7$Li$^+$ ions are investigated theoretically to extract the Zemach radii of the $^6$Li and $^7$Li nuclei by comparing with precision measurements. The obtained Zemach radii are larger than the previous values of Puchalski and Pachucki [\href{https://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevLett.111.243001}{Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 111}, 243001 (2013)}] and disagree with them by about 1.5 and 2.2 standard deviations for $^6$Li and $^7$Li, respectively. Furthermore, our Zemach radius of $^6$Li differs significantly from the nuclear physics value, derived from the nuclear charge and magnetic radii [\href{https://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevA.78.012513}{Phys. Rev. A {\bf 78}, 012513 (2008)}], by more than 6 sigma, indicating an anomalous nuclear structure for $^6$Li. The conclusion that the Zemach radius of $^7$Li is about 40\% larger than that of $^6$Li is confirmed. The obtained Zemach radii are used to calculate the hyperfine splittings of the $2\,^3\!P_J$ states of $^{6,7}$Li$^+$, where an order of magnitude improvement over the previous theory has been achieved for $^7$Li$^+$.

QED and relativistic nuclear recoil corrections to the 413 nm tune-out wavelength for the $2\,^3S_1$ state of helium

Comparison of high accuracy calculations with precision measurement of the 413 nm tune-out wavelength of the He($2\,^3S_1$) state provides a unique test of quantum electro-dynamic (QED). We perform large-scale relativistic-configuration-interaction (RCI) calculations of the tune-out wavelength, that include the mass-shift operator, and fully account for leading relativistic nuclear recoil terms in the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit (DCB) Hamiltonian. We obtain the QED correction to the tune-out wavelength using perturbation theory, and the effect of finite nuclear size is also evaluated. The resulting tune-out wavelengths for the $2\,^3S_1(M_J=0)$ and $2\,^3S_1(M_J=\pm 1)$ states are 413.084 26(4) nm and 413.090 15(4) nm, respectively. Compared with the only current experimental value of 413.0938(9stat)(20syst) nm for the $2\,^3S_1(M_J=\pm 1)$ state, there is 1.8$σ$ discrepancy between present theoretical work and experiment, which stimulates further theoretical and higher-precision experimental investigations on the 413 nm tune-out wavelength. In addition, we also determine the QED correction for the static dipole polarizability of the He($2\,^3S_1$) state to be 22.5 ppm, which may enable a new test of QED in the future.

A general model for collaboration networks

In this paper, we propose a general model for collaboration networks. Depending on a single free parameter "{\bf preferential exponent}", this model interpolates between networks with a scale-free and an exponential degree distribution. The degree distribution in the present networks can be roughly classified into four patterns, all of which are observed in empirical data. And this model exhibits small-world effect, which means the corresponding networks are of very short average distance and highly large clustering coefficient. More interesting, we find a peak distribution of act-size from empirical data which has not been emphasized before of some collaboration networks. Our model can produce the peak act-size distribution naturally that agrees with the empirical data well.
