Microwave quantum optics as a direct probe of the Overhauser field in a quantum-dot CQED device

We show theoretically that a quantum-dot circuit quantum electrodynamics (CQED) device can be used as a probe of the Overhauser field in quantum dots. By coupling a transmission line to the interdot tunneling gate, an electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) scheme can be established, whose Fano-type interference leads to a sharp curvature in the reflection spectrum around resonance. This sharp feature persists even in the presence of the fluctuating spin bath, rendering a high-resolution method to extract the bath's statistical information. For strong nuclear spin fields, the reflection spectrum exhibits an Autler-Townes splitting, where the peak locations indicate the strengths of the Overhauser field gradient (OFG).

Circular-polarization sensitive metamaterial based on triple quantum-dot molecules

We propose a new type of a chiral metamaterial based on an ensemble of artificial molecules formed by three identical quantum-dots in a triangular arrangement. A static magnetic field oriented perpendicular to the plane breaks mirror symmetry, rendering the molecules sensitive to the circular polarization of light. By varying the orientation and magnitude of the magnetic field one can control the polarization and frequency of the emission spectrum. We identify a threshold frequency, Ω, above which we find strong birefringence. In addition, a Kerr rotation and circularly polarized lasing action can be implemented. We investigate the single-molecule lasing properties for different energy-level arrangements and demonstrate the possibility of circular polarization conversion. Finally, we analyze the effect of weak stray electric fields or deviations from the equilateral triangular geometry.

Lasing and transport in a coupled quantum dot-resonator system

We investigate a double quantum dot coupled to a transmission line resonator. By driving a current through the double dot, a population inversion between the dot levels can be created, and a lasing state of the radiation field is generated within a sharp resonance window. The transport current correlates with the lasing state. The sharp resonance condition allows for resolving small differences in the dot properties. Dissipative processes in the quantum dots and their effect on the lasing and transport behavior are investigated.

Noise spectrum of a quantum dot-resonator lasing circuit

Single-electron tunneling processes through a double quantum dot can induce a lasing state in an electromagnetic resonator which is coupled coherently to the dot system. Here we study the noise properties of the transport current in the lasing regime, i.e., both the zero-frequency shot noise as well as the noise spectrum. The former shows a remarkable super-Poissonian behavior when the system approaches the lasing transition, but sub-Poissonian behavior deep in the lasing state. The noise spectrum contains information about the coherent dynamics of the coupled dot-resonator system. It shows pronounced structure at a frequency matching that of the resonator due to the excitation of photons. For strong interdot Coulomb interaction we find asymmetries in the auto-correlation noise spectra of the left and right junctions, which we trace back to asymmetries in the incoherent tunneling channels.

Strong coupling of spin qubits to a transmission line resonator

We propose a mechanism for coupling spin qubits formed in double quantum dots to a superconducting transmission line resonator. Coupling the resonator to the gate controlling the interdot tunneling creates a strong spin qubit--resonator interaction with strength of tens of MHz. This mechanism allows operating the system at a point of degeneracy where dephasing is minimized. The transmission line can serve as a shuttle allowing for two-qubit operations, including fast generation of qubit-qubit entanglement and the implementation of a controlled-phase gate.

Sub-Poissonian photon statistics in a strongly coupled single-qubit laser

We investigate qubit lasing in the strong coupling limit. The qubit is given by a Cooper-pair box, and population inversion is established by an additional third state, which can be addressed via quasiparticle tunneling. The coupling strength between oscillator and qubit is assumed to be much higher than the quasiparticle tunneling rate. We find that the photon number distribution is sub-Poissonian in this strong coupling limit.

Correlation between lasing and transport properties in a quantum dot-resonator system

We study a double quantum dot system coherently coupled to an electromagnetic resonator. By suitably biasing the system, a population inversion can be created between the dot levels. The resulting lasing state exists within a narrow resonance window, where the transport current correlates with the lasing state. It allows probing the lasing state via a current measurement. Moreover, the resulting narrow current peak opens perspective for applications of the setup for high resolution measurements.

Lasing and transport in a quantum dot-resonator circuit

We study a double quantum dot system coherently coupled to an electromagnetic resonator. A current through the dot system can create a population inversion in the dot levels and, within a narrow resonance window, a lasing state in the resonator. The lasing state correlates with the transport properties. On one hand, this allows probing the lasing state via a current measurement. On the other hand, the resulting narrow current peak allows resolving small differences in the dot properties, e.g., a small difference in the Zeeman splittings of the two dots. For realistic situations relaxation processes have pronounced consequences. Remarkably, they may even enhance the resolution between different spin states by releasing a trapped population in the off-resonant spin channel.

Single-qubit lasing in the strong-coupling regime

Motivated by recent ``circuit QED'' experiments we study the lasing transition and spectral properties of single-qubit lasers. In the strong coupling, low-temperature regime quantum fluctuations dominate over thermal noise and strongly influence the linewidth of the laser. When the qubit and the resonator are detuned, amplitude and phase fluctuations of the radiation field are coupled, and the phase diffusion model, commonly used to describe conventional lasers, fails. We predict pronounced effects near the lasing transition, with an enhanced linewidth and non-exponential decay of the correlation functions. We cover a wide range of parameters by using two complementary approaches, one based on the Liouville equation in a Fock state basis, covering arbitrarily strong coupling but limited to low photon numbers, the other based on the coherent-state representation, covering large photon numbers but restricted to weak or intermediate coupling.

Tunneling spin current and spin diode behavior in bilayer system

The coherent tunneling spin current in the bilayer system with spin-orbit coupling is investigated. Based on the continuity-like equations, we discuss the definition of the tunneling current and show that the overlaps between wavefunctions for different layers contribute to the tunneling current. We study the linear response of the tunneling spin current to an in-plane electric field in the presence of nonmagnetic impurities. The tunneling spin conductivity we obtained presents a feature asymmetrical with respect to the gate voltage when the strengthes of impurity potentials are different in each layer.

Understanding spin transport from the motion in SU(2)$\times$U(1) fields

Starting from a continuum constituted by charged tops, we formulate the classical counterpart of a previously obtained covariant continuity-like equation for the spin current. Such a formulism provides an intuitive picture to elucidate the non-conservation of the spin current and to interpret the condition for the emergence of an infinite spin relaxation time. It also facilitates the discussion on the spin precession in a one-dimensional quantum wire with Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit couplings. Furthermore, we derive the diffusion equations for both the charge and spin densities and find that they couple to each other due to the Zitterbewegung.

Magnification of spin Hall effect in bilayer electron gas

Spin transport properties of a coupled bilayer electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling are studied. The definition of the spin currents in each layer as well as the corresponding continuity-like equations in the bilayer system are given. The curves of the spin Hall conductivities obtained in each layer exhibit sharp cusps around a particular value of the tunnelling strength and the conductivities undergo sign changes across this point. Our investigation on the impurity effect manifests that an arbitrarily small concentration of nonmagnetic impurities does not suppress the spin Hall conductivity to zero in the bilayer system. Based on these features, an experimental scheme is suggested to detect a magnification of the spin Hall effect.

Generalized Kubo formula for spin transport: A theory of linear response to non-Abelian fields

The traditional Kubo formula is generalized to describe the linear response with respect to non-Abelian fields. To fulfil the demand for studying spin transport, the SU(2) Kubo formulae are derived by two conventional approaches with different gauge fixings. Those two approaches are shown to be equivalent where the non-conservation of the SU(2) current plays an essential role in guaranteeing the consistency. Some concrete examples relating Spin Hall Effect are considered. The dc spin conductivity vanishes in the system with parabolic unperturbed dispersion relation. By applying a time-dependent Rashba field, the spin conductivity can be measured directly. Our formula is also applied to the high-dimensional representation for the interests of some important models, such as Luttinger model and bilayer spin Hall system.

SU(2)xU(1) unified theory for charge, orbit and spin currents

Spin and charge currents in systems with Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings are formulated in a unified version of four-dimensional SU(2)$\times$U(1) gauge theory, with U(1) the Maxwell field and SU(2) the Yang-Mills field. While the bare spin current is non-conserved, it is compensated by a contribution from the SU(2) gauge field, which gives rise to a spin torque in the spin transport, consistent with the semi-classical theory of Culcer et al. Orbit current is shown to be non-conserved in the presence of electromagnetic fields. Similar to the Maxwell field inducing forces on charge and charge current, we derive forces acting on spin and spin current induced by the Yang Mills fields such as the Rashba and Dresselhaus fields and the sheer strain field. The spin density and spin current may be considered as a source generating Yang-Mills field in certain condensed matter systems.
