A highly efficient and accurate numerical method for the electromagnetic scattering problem with rectangular cavities

This paper presents a robust numerical solution to the electromagnetic scattering problem involving multiple multi-layered cavities in both transverse magnetic and electric polarizations. A transparent boundary condition is introduced at the open aperture of the cavity to transform the problem from an unbounded domain into that of bounded cavities. By employing Fourier series expansion of the solution, we reduce the original boundary value problem to a two-point boundary value problem, represented as an ordinary differential equation for the Fourier coefficients. The analytical derivation of the connection formula for the solution enables us to construct a small-scale system that includes solely the Fourier coefficients on the aperture, streamlining the solving process. Furthermore, we propose accurate numerical quadrature formulas designed to efficiently handle the weakly singular integrals that arise in the transparent boundary conditions. To demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of our proposed method, a series of numerical experiments are conducted.

Variational Inverting Network for Statistical Inverse Problems of Partial Differential Equations

To quantify uncertainties in inverse problems of partial differential equations (PDEs), we formulate them into statistical inference problems using Bayes' formula. Recently, well-justified infinite-dimensional Bayesian analysis methods have been developed to construct dimension-independent algorithms. However, there are three challenges for these infinite-dimensional Bayesian methods: prior measures usually act as regularizers and are not able to incorporate prior information efficiently; complex noises, such as more practical non-i.i.d. distributed noises, are rarely considered; and time-consuming forward PDE solvers are needed to estimate posterior statistical quantities. To address these issues, an infinite-dimensional inference framework has been proposed based on the infinite-dimensional variational inference method and deep generative models. Specifically, by introducing some measure equivalence assumptions, we derive the evidence lower bound in the infinite-dimensional setting and provide possible parametric strategies that yield a general inference framework called the Variational Inverting Network (VINet). This inference framework can encode prior and noise information from learning examples. In addition, relying on the power of deep neural networks, the posterior mean and variance can be efficiently and explicitly generated in the inference stage. In numerical experiments, we design specific network structures that yield a computable VINet from the general inference framework. Numerical examples of linear inverse problems of an elliptic equation and the Helmholtz equation are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed inference framework.

Numerical solution of the cavity scattering problem for flexural waves on thin plates: linear finite element methods

Flexural wave scattering plays a crucial role in optimizing and designing structures for various engineering applications. Mathematically, the flexural wave scattering problem on an infinite thin plate is described by a fourth-order plate-wave equation on an unbounded domain, making it challenging to solve directly using the regular linear finite element method (FEM). In this paper, we propose two numerical methods, the interior penalty FEM (IP-FEM) and the boundary penalty FEM (BP-FEM) with a transparent boundary condition (TBC), to study flexural wave scattering by an arbitrary-shaped cavity on an infinite thin plate. Both methods decompose the fourth-order plate-wave equation into the Helmholtz and modified Helmholtz equations with coupled conditions at the cavity boundary. A TBC is then constructed based on the analytical solutions of the Helmholtz and modified Helmholtz equations in the exterior domain, effectively truncating the unbounded domain into a bounded one. Using linear triangular elements, the IP-FEM and BP-FEM successfully suppress the oscillation of the bending moment of the solution at the cavity boundary, demonstrating superior stability and accuracy compared to the regular linear FEM when applied to this problem.

Stability for inverse source problems of the stochastic Helmholtz equation with a white noise

This paper is concerned with the stability estimates for inverse source problems of the stochastic Helmholtz equation driven by white noise. The well-posedness is established for the direct source problems, which ensures the existence and uniqueness of solutions. The stability estimates are deduced for the inverse source problems, which aim to determine the strength of the random source. To enhance the stability of the inverse source problems, we incorporate a priori information regarding the regularity and support of the strength. In the case of homogeneous media, a Hölder stability estimate is established, providing a quantitative measure of the stability for reconstructing the source strength. For the more challenging scenario of inhomogeneous media, a logarithmic stability estimate is presented, capturing the intricate interactions between the source and the varying medium properties.

Inverse scattering of periodic surfaces with a superlens

We propose a scheme for imaging periodic surfaces using a superlens. By employing an inverse scattering model and the transformed field expansion method, we derive an approximate reconstruction formula for the surface profile, assuming small amplitude. This formula suggests that unlimited resolution can be achieved for the linearized inverse problem with perfectly matched parameters. Our method requires only a single incident wave at a fixed frequency and can be efficiently implemented using fast Fourier transform. Through numerical experiments, we demonstrate that our method achieves resolution significantly surpassing the resolution limit for both smooth and non-smooth surface profiles with either perfect or marginally imperfect parameters.

A data-assisted two-stage method for the inverse random source problem

We propose a data-assisted two-stage method for solving an inverse random source problem of the Helmholtz equation. In the first stage, the regularized Kaczmarz method is employed to generate initial approximations of the mean and variance based on the mild solution of the stochastic Helmholtz equation. A dataset is then obtained by sampling the approximate and corresponding true profiles from a certain a-priori criterion. The second stage is formulated as an image-to-image translation problem, and several data-assisted approaches are utilized to handle the dataset and obtain enhanced reconstructions. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the data-assisted two-stage method provides satisfactory reconstruction for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous media with fewer realizations.

LP-SLAM: Language-Perceptive RGB-D SLAM system based on Large Language Model

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is a critical technology that enables autonomous robots to be aware of their surrounding environment. With the development of deep learning, SLAM systems can achieve a higher level of perception of the environment, including the semantic and text levels. However, current works are limited in their ability to achieve a natural-language level of perception of the world. To address this limitation, we propose LP-SLAM, the first language-perceptive SLAM system that leverages large language models (LLMs). LP-SLAM has two major features: (a) it can detect text in the scene and determine whether it represents a landmark to be stored during the tracking and mapping phase, and (b) it can understand natural language input from humans and provide guidance based on the generated map. We illustrated three usages of the LLM in the system including text cluster, landmark judgment, and natural language navigation. Our proposed system represents an advancement in the field of LLMs based SLAM and opens up new possibilities for autonomous robots to interact with their environment in a more natural and intuitive way.

An inverse potential problem for the stochastic diffusion equation with a multiplicative white noise

This work concerns the direct and inverse potential problems for the stochastic diffusion equation driven by a multiplicative time-dependent white noise. The direct problem is to examine the well-posedness of the stochastic diffusion equation for a given potential, while the inverse problem is to determine the potential from the expectation of the solution at a fixed observation point inside the spatial domain. The direct problem is shown to admit a unique and positive mild solution if the initial value is nonnegative. Moreover, an explicit formula is deduced to reconstruct the square of the potential, which leads to the uniqueness of the inverse problem for nonnegative potential functions. Two regularization methods are utilized to overcome the instability of the numerical differentiation in the reconstruction formula. Numerical results show that the methods are effective to reconstruct both smooth and nonsmooth potential functions.

A novel boundary integral formulation for the biharmonic wave scattering problem

This paper is concerned with the cavity scattering problem in an infinite thin plate, where the out-of-plane displacement is governed by the two-dimensional biharmonic wave equation. Based on an operator splitting, the scattering problem is recast into a coupled boundary value problem for the Helmholtz and modified Helmholtz equations. A novel boundary integral formulation is proposed for the coupled problem. By introducing an appropriate regularizer, the well-posedness is established for the system of boundary integral equations. Moreover, the convergence analysis is carried out for the semi- and full-discrete schemes of the boundary integral system by using the collocation method. Numerical results show that the proposed method is highly accurate for both smooth and nonsmooth examples.

Inverse scattering for the biharmonic wave equation with a random potential

We consider the inverse random potential scattering problem for the two- and three-dimensional biharmonic wave equation in lossy media. The potential is assumed to be a microlocally isotropic Gaussian rough field. The main contributions of the work are twofold. First, the unique continuation principle is proved for the fourth order biharmonic wave equation with rough potentials and the well-posedness of the direct scattering problem is established in the distribution sense. Second, the correlation strength of the random potential is shown to be uniquely determined by the high frequency limit of the second moment of the scattered field averaged over the frequency band. Moreover, we demonstrate that the expectation in the data can be removed and the data of a single realization is sufficient for the uniqueness of the inverse problem with probability one when the medium is lossless.

Stein variational gradient descent on infinite-dimensional space and applications to statistical inverse problems

In this paper, we propose an infinite-dimensional version of the Stein variational gradient descent (iSVGD) method for solving Bayesian inverse problems. The method can generate approximate samples from posteriors efficiently. Based on the concepts of operator-valued kernels and vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, a rigorous definition is given for the infinite-dimensional objects, e.g., the Stein operator, which are proved to be the limit of finite-dimensional ones. Moreover, a more efficient iSVGD with preconditioning operators is constructed by generalizing the change of variables formula and introducing a regularity parameter. The proposed algorithms are applied to an inverse problem of the steady state Darcy flow equation. Numerical results confirm our theoretical findings and demonstrate the potential applications of the proposed approach in the posterior sampling of large-scale nonlinear statistical inverse problems.

An Adaptive Finite Element DtN Method for Maxwell's Equations

This paper is concerned with a numerical solution to the scattering of a time-harmonic electromagnetic wave by a bounded and impenetrable obstacle in three dimensions. The electromagnetic wave propagation is modeled by a boundary value problem of Maxwell's equations in the exterior domain of the obstacle. Based on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operator, which is defined by an infinite series, an exact transparent boundary condition is introduced and the scattering problem is reduced equivalently into a bounded domain. An a posteriori error estimate based adaptive finite element DtN method is developed to solve the discrete variational problem, where the DtN operator is truncated into a sum of finitely many terms. The a posteriori error estimate takes into account both the finite element approximation error and the truncation error of the DtN operator. The latter is shown to decay exponentially with respect to the truncation parameter. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A spectral boundary integral method for the elastic obstacle scattering problem in three dimensions

In this paper, we consider the scattering of a plane wave by a rigid obstacle embedded in a homogeneous and isotropic elastic medium in three dimensions. Based on the Helmholtz decomposition, the elastic scattering problem is reduced to a coupled boundary value problem for the Helmholtz and Maxwell equations. A novel system of boundary integral equations is formulated and a spectral boundary integral method is developed for the coupled boundary value problem. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.

Stability for the multi-dimensional Borg--Levinson theorem of the biharmonic operator

In this paper, we prove a conditional Hölder stability estimate for the inverse spectral problem of the biharmonic operator. The proof employs the resolvent estimate and a Weyl-type law for the biharmonic operator which were obtained by the authors in \cite{LYZ}. This work extends nontrivially the result in \cite{stefanov} from the second order Schrödinger operator to the fourth order biharmonic operator.

Inverse source problems for the stochastic wave equations: far-field patterns

This paper addresses the direct and inverse source problems for the stochastic acoustic, biharmonic, electromagnetic, and elastic wave equations in a unified framework. The driven source is assumed to be a centered generalized microlocally isotropic Gaussian random field, whose covariance and relation operators are classical pseudo-differential operators. Given the random source, the direct problems are shown to be well-posed in the sense of distributions and the regularity of the solutions are given. For the inverse problems, we demonstrate by ergodicity that the principal symbols of the covariance and relation operators can be uniquely determined by a single realization of the far-field pattern averaged over the frequency band with probability one.

Analysis of the time-domain PML problem for Maxwell's equations in a waveguide

This paper is concerned with the mathematical analysis of the time-domain electromagnetic scattering problem in an infinite rectangular waveguide. A transparent boundary condition is developed to reformulate the problem into an equivalent initial boundary value problem in a bounded domain. The well-posedness and stability are obtained for the reduced problem. The perfectly matched layer method is studied to truncate the waveguide. It is shown that the truncated problem attains a unique solution. Moreover, an explicit error estimate is given between the solutions of the original scattering problem and the truncated problem. Based on the estimate, the stability and exponential convergence are established for the truncated problem. The optimal bound is achieved for the error with explicit dependence on the parameters of the perfectly matched layer.

An inverse random source problem for the biharmonic wave equation

This paper is concerned with an inverse source problem for the stochastic biharmonic operator wave equation. The driven source is assumed to be a microlocally isotropic Gaussian random field with its covariance operator being a classical pseudo-differential operator. The well-posedness of the direct problem is examined in the distribution sense and the regularity of the solution is discussed for the given rough source. For the inverse problem, the strength of the random source, involved in the principal symbol of its covariance operator, is shown to be uniquely determined by a single realization of the magnitude of the wave field averaged over the frequency band with probability one. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method for the case that the random source is the white noise.

Direct and inverse problems for the Schrödinger operator in a three-dimensional planar waveguide

In this paper, we study the meromorphic continuation of the resolvent for the Schrödinger operator in a three-dimensional planar waveguide. We prove the existence of a resonance-free region and an upper bound for the resolvent. As an application, the direct source problem is shown to have a unique solution under some appropriate assumptions. Moreover, an increasing stability is achieved for the inverse source problem of the Schrödinger operator in the waveguide by using limited aperture Dirichlet data only at multiple frequencies. The stability estimate consists of the Lipschitz type data discrepancy and the high frequency tail of the source function, where the latter decreases as the upper bound of the frequency increases.
