Electromagnetic field enhancement in a subwavelength rectangular open cavity

Consider the transverse magnetic polarization of the electromagnetic scattering of a plane wave by a perfectly conducting plane surface, which contains a two-dimensional subwavelength rectangular cavity. The enhancement is investigated fully for the electric and magnetic fields arising in such an interaction. The cavity wall is assumed to be a perfect electric conductor, while the cavity bottom is allowed to be either a perfect electric conductor or a perfect magnetic conductor. We show that the significant field enhancement may be achieved in both nonresonant and resonant regimes. The proofs are based on variational approaches, layer potential techniques, boundary integral equations, and asymptotic analysis. Numerical experiments are also presented to confirm the theoretical findings.

Inverse Obstacle Scattering for Elastic Waves in Three Dimensions

Consider an exterior problem of the three-dimensional elastic wave equation, which models the scattering of a time-harmonic plane wave by a rigid obstacle. The scattering problem is reformulated into a boundary value problem by introducing a transparent boundary condition. Given the incident field, the direct problem is to determine the displacement of the wave field from the known obstacle; the inverse problem is to determine the obstacle's surface from the measurement of the displacement on an artificial boundary enclosing the obstacle. In this paper, we consider both the direct and inverse problems. The direct problem is shown to have a unique weak solution by examining its variational formulation. The domain derivative is studied and a frequency continuation method is developed for the inverse problem. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A fast direct imaging method for the inverse obstacle scattering problem with nonlinear point scatterers

Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic plane wave by heterogeneous media consisting of linear or nonlinear point scatterers and extended obstacles. A generalized Foldy-Lax formulation is developed to take fully into account of the multiple scattering by the complex media. A new imaging function is proposed and an FFT-based direct imaging method is developed for the inverse obstacle scattering problem, which is to reconstruct the shape of the extended obstacles. The novel idea is to utilize the nonlinear point scatterers to excite high harmonic generation so that enhanced imaging resolution can be achieved. Numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

An adaptive finite element PML method for the acoustic-elastic interaction in three dimensions

Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic acoustic incident wave by a bounded, penetrable, and isotropic elastic solid, which is immersed in a homogeneous compressible air or fluid. The paper concerns the numerical solution for such an acoustic-elastic interaction problem in three dimensions. An exact transparent boundary condition (TBC) is developed to reduce the problem equivalently into a boundary value problem in a bounded domain. The perfectly matched layer (PML) technique is adopted to truncate the unbounded physical domain into a bounded computational domain. The well-posedness and exponential convergence of the solution are established for the truncated PML problem by using a PML equivalent TBC. An a posteriori error estimate based adaptive finite element method is developed to solve the scattering problem. Numerical experiments are included to demonstrate the competitive behavior of the proposed method.

Inverse Electromagnetic Diffraction by Biperiodic Dielectric Gratings

Consider the incidence of a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave onto a biperiodic dielectric grating, where the surface is assumed to be a small and smooth perturbation of a plane. The diffraction is modeled as a transmission problem for Maxwell's equations in three dimensions. This paper concerns the inverse diffraction problem which is to reconstruct the grating surface from either the diffracted field or the transmitted field. A novel approach is developed to solve the challenging nonlinear and ill-posed inverse problem. The method requires only a single incident field and is realized via the fast Fourier transform. Numerical results show that it is simple, fast, and stable to reconstruct biperiodic dielectric grating surfaces with super-resolved resolution.

Convergence of the PML solution for elastic wave scattering by biperiodic structures

This paper is concerned with the analysis of elastic wave scattering of a time-harmonic plane wave by a biperiodic rigid surface, where the wave propagation is governed by the three-dimensional Navier equation. An exact transparent boundary condition is developed to reduce the scattering problem equivalently into a boundary value problem in a bounded domain. The perfectly matched layer (PML) technique is adopted to truncate the unbounded physical domain into a bounded computational domain. The well-posedness and exponential convergence of the solution are established for the truncated PML problem by developing a PML equivalent transparent boundary condition. The proofs rely on a careful study of the error between the two transparent boundary operators. The work significantly extend the results from the one-dimensional periodic structures to the two-dimensional biperiodic structures. Numerical experiments are included to demonstrate the competitive behavior of the proposed method.

Analysis of Transient Acoustic-Elastic Interaction in an Unbounded Structure

Consider the wave propagation in a two-layered medium consisting of a homogeneous compressible air or fluid on top of a homogeneous isotropic elastic solid. The interface between the two layers is assumed to be an unbounded rough surface. This paper concerns the time-domain analysis of such an acoustic-elastic interaction problem in an unbounded structure in three dimensions. Using an exact transparent boundary condition and suitable interface conditions, we study an initial-boundary value problem for the coupling of the Helmholtz equation and the Navier equation. The well-posedness and stability are established for the reduced problem. Our proof is based on the method of energy, the Lax--Milgram lemma, and the inversion theorem of the Laplace transform. Moreover, a priori estimates with explicit dependence on the time are achieved for the quantities of acoustic pressure and elastic displacement by taking special test functions for the time-domain variational problem.

Inverse Random Source Scattering for Elastic Waves

This paper is concerned with the direct and inverse random source scattering problems for elastic waves where the source is assumed to be driven by an additive white noise. Given the source, the direct problem is to determine the displacement of the random wave field. The inverse problem is to reconstruct the mean and variance of the random source from the boundary measurement of the wave field at multiple frequencies. The direct problem is shown to have a unique mild solution by using a constructive proof. Based on the explicit mild solution, Fredholm integral equations of the first kind are deduced for the inverse problem. The regularized Kaczmarz method is presented to solve the ill-posed integral equations. Numerical experiments are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Increasing stability for the inverse source scattering problem with multi-frequencies

Consider the scattering of the two- or three-dimensional Helmholtz equation where the source of the electric current density is assumed to be compactly supported in a ball. This paper concerns the stability analysis of the inverse source scattering problem which is to reconstruct the source function. Our results show that increasing stability can be obtained for the inverse problem by using only the Dirichlet boundary data with multi-frequencies.

Consider the one-dimensional stochastic Helmholtz equation where the source is assumed to be driven by the white noise. This paper concerns the stability analysis of the inverse random source problem which is to reconstruct the statistical properties of the source such as the mean and variance. Our results show that increasing stability can be obtained for the inverse problem by using suitable boundary data with multi-frequencies.

An adaptive finite element PML method for the elastic wave scattering problem in periodic structures

An adaptive finite element method is presented for the elastic scattering of a time-harmonic plane wave by a periodic surface. First, the unbounded physical domain is truncated into a bounded computational domain by introducing the perfectly matched layer (PML) technique. The well-posedness and exponential convergence of the solution are established for the truncated PML problem by developing an equivalent transparent boundary condition. Second, an a posteriori error estimate is deduced for the discrete problem and is used to determine the finite elements for refinements and to determine the PML parameters. Numerical experiments are included to demonstrate the competitive behavior of the proposed adaptive method.

Electromagnetic Scattering for Time-Domain Maxwell's Equations in an Unbounded Structure

The goal of this work is to study the electromagnetic scattering problem of time-domain Maxwell's equations in an unbounded structure. An exact transparent boundary condition is developed to reformulate the scattering problem into an initial-boundary value problem in an infinite rectangular slab. The well-posedness and stability are established for the reduced problem. Our proof is based on the method of energy, the Lax--Milgram lemma, and the inversion theorem of the Laplace transform. Moreover, a priori estimates with explicit dependence on the time are achieved for the electric field by directly studying the time-domain Maxwell equations.

Analysis of Time-Domain Scattering by Periodic Structures

This paper is devoted to the mathematical analysis of a time-domain electromagnetic scattering by periodic structures which are known as diffraction gratings. The scattering problem is reduced equivalently into an initial-boundary value problem in a bounded domain by using an exact transparent boundary condition. The well-posedness and stability of the solution are established for the reduced problem. Moreover, a priori energy estimates are obtained with minimum regularity requirement for the data and explicit dependence on the time.
