Beyond Arbitrary Geometry: Topology Generalization In neural PDE Operators

Neural operators that accept arbitrary meshes are often treated as geometry-general, but unseen domain topology changes both the invariant and decaying subspaces of a PDE operator. We use Hodge heat flow as a controlled lens on this distinction and introduce TopoBox-3D, where tunnels and cavities vary Betti support while the exact Hodge decomposition separates the harmonic kernel from the positive spectrum. Across six architectures, models that infer topology implicitly suffer excess matched degradation in 37 of 45 model--task topology-OOD cells, yet cases that change harmonic dimension are not more strongly penalized on average. The dominant difficulty is instead spectral: the initial Rayleigh quotient is the most stable predictor of error, and spectral broadening adds information for edge and face cochains. Most strikingly, controlled probes show that explicit incidence and harmonic coordinates do not yield the best kernel-identity accuracy; nevertheless, TNO ranks first in mixed-input nonharmonic accuracy on all six tasks with nontrivial harmonic support. Together, these results establish topology as a distinct generalization axis beyond arbitrary-geometry compatibility and show that its influence extends across the Hodge spectrum rather than remaining confined to the harmonic kernel. More broadly, they suggest that global, low-frequency structural priors may help organize predictions in the faster-decaying complementary component, offering a new perspective on how neural operators may generalize across topology as well as geometry.

Thinking in Structures: Evaluating Spatial Intelligence in Constraint-Governed Spaces

Spatial intelligence is crucial for vision--language models (VLMs), yet many scene-centric benchmarks evaluate unconstrained environments where a single image may admit multiple plausible 3D interpretations. We introduce SSI-Bench, a VQA benchmark for Structure-Centric Spatial Reasoning (SCSR) in constraint-governed spaces. Built from complex real-world 3D structures, it uses structural constraints from geometry, topology, and physical feasibility to make component relations more determinate from visual evidence. The benchmark contains 1,000 ranking questions spanning geometric and topological reasoning, where correct ordering requires resolving all candidate-wise 3D relations, imposing stronger demands on spatial understanding. It is created through a fully human-centered pipeline with over 400 researcher-hours of image curation, component annotation, and question design. Evaluating 31 VLMs reveals a large gap to humans: the best open-source model achieves 22.2% accuracy and the strongest closed-source model reaches 33.6%, while humans score 91.6%. Further results show that chain-of-thought reasoning brings only marginal gains, and error analysis reveals fundamental limitations in current models' spatial understanding within constraint-governed spaces. Two-Stage Polarization-Based Nonbinary Polar Codes for 5G URLLC

In this paper, we propose a new class of nonbinary polar codes with two-stage polarization for ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC), where the outer (symbol-level) polarization is achieved by using a 2X2 q-ary matrix [1 0; β1] as the kernel and the inner (bit-level) polarization is achieved by a binary polarization matrix for each input symbol. With the two-stage polarization, bit-level code construction is introduced, resulting in partially-frozen symbols, where the frozen bits in these symbols can be used as active-check bits to facilitate the decoder. The encoder/decoder of the proposed codes has the same structure as the original binary polar codes, admitting an easily configurable and flexible implementation, which is an obvious advantage over the existing nonbinary polar codes based on Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. To support high spectral efficiency in URLLC, we also present, in addition to the single level coded modulation scheme with field matched modulation order, a mixed multilevel coded modulation scheme with arbitrary modulation order to trade off the latency against complexity. Simulation results show that our proposed nonbinary polar codes exhibit comparable performance with the RS4-based polar codes and outperform binary polar codes with low decoding latency, suggesting a potential application for 5G URLLC.
