On free actions of discrete quantum groups

R. Ellis showed in 1960 that every discrete group acts freely on its Stone-Cech compactification. We extend this result to discrete quantum groups with low duals. The method of proof is different from the earlier proofs in the classical case, using the definition of freeness given by D. A. Ellwood in the setting of noncommutative geometry.

Fixed points and limits of convolution powers of contractive quantum measures

We study fixed points of contractive convolution operators associated to contractive quantum measures on locally compact quantum groups. We characterise the existence of non-zero fixed points respectively on $L^\infty(\mathbb{G})$ and on $C_0(\mathbb{G})$, and exploit these results to obtain for example the structure of the fixed points on the non-commutative $L_p$-spaces. Some consequences for the fixed points of classical convolution operators and Herz-Schur multipliers are also indicated.

Admissibility Conjecture and Kazhdan's Property (T) for quantum groups

We give a partial solution to a long-standing open problem in the theory of quantum groups, namely we prove that all finite-dimensional representations of a wide class of locally compact quantum groups factor through matrix quantum groups (Admissibility Conjecture for quantum group representations). We use this to study Kazhdan's Property (T) for quantum groups with non-trivial scaling group, strengthening and generalising some of the earlier results obtained by Fima, Kyed and Sołtan, Chen and Ng, Daws, Skalski and Viselter, and Brannan and Kerr. Our main results are: (i) All finite-dimensional unitary representations of locally compact quantum groups which are either unimodular or arise through a special bicrossed product construction are admissible. (ii) A generalisation of a theorem of Wang which characterises Property (T) in terms of isolation of finite-dimensional irreducible representations in the spectrum. (iii) A very short proof of the fact that quantum groups with Property (T) are unimodular. (iv) A generalisation of a quantum version of a theorem of Bekka--Valette proven earlier for quantum groups with trivial scaling group, which characterises Property (T) in terms of non-existence of almost invariant vectors for weakly mixing representations. (v) A generalisation of a quantum version of Kerr-Pichot theorem, proven earlier for quantum groups with trivial scaling group, which characterises Property (T) in terms of denseness properties of weakly mixing representations.

Idempotent states on locally compact quantum groups II

Correspondence between idempotent states and expected right-invariant subalgebras is extended to non-coamenable, non-unimodular locally compact quantum groups; in particular left convolution operators are shown to automatically preserve the right Haar weight.

Actions of locally compact (quantum) groups on ternary rings of operators, their crossed products and generalized Poisson boundaries

Actions of locally compact groups and quantum groups on W*-ternary rings of operators are discussed and related crossed products introduced. The results generalise those for von Neumann algebraic actions with proofs based mostly on passing to the linking von Neumann algebra. They are motivated by the study of fixed point spaces for convolution operators generated by contractive, non-necessarily positive measures, both in the classical and in the quantum context.

Quasi-actions and rough Cayley graphs for locally compact groups

We define the notion of rough Cayley graph for compactly generated locally compact groups in terms of quasi-actions. We construct such a graph for any compactly generated locally compact group using quasi-lattices and show uniqueness up to quasi-isometry. A class of examples is given by the Cayley graphs of cocompact lattices in compactly generated groups. As an application, we show that a compactly generated group has polynomial growth if and only if its rough Cayley graph has polynomial growth (same for intermediate and exponential growth). Moreover, a unimodular compactly generated group is amenable if and only if its rough Cayley graph is amenable as a metric space.

Inclusions of ternary rings of operators and conditional expectations

It is shown that if T is a ternary ring of operators (TRO), X is a nondegenerate sub-TRO of T and there exists a contractive idempotent surjective map P:T-->X, then P has a unique, explicitly described extension to a conditional expectation between the associated linking algebras. A version of the result for W*-TROs is also presented and some applications mentioned.

Contractive idempotents on locally compact quantum groups

A general form of contractive idempotent functionals on coamenable locally compact quantum groups is obtained, generalising the result of Greenleaf on contractive measures on locally compact groups. The image of a convolution operator associated to a contractive idempotent is shown to be a ternary ring of operators. As a consequence a one-to-one correspondence between contractive idempotents and a certain class of ternary rings of operators is established.

Completely positive definite functions and Bochner's theorem for locally compact quantum groups

We prove two versions of Bochner's theorem for locally compact quantum groups. First, every completely positive definite "function" on a locally compact quantum group $\G$ arises as a transform of a positive functional on the universal C*-algebra $C_0^u(\dual\G)$ of the dual quantum group. Second, when $\G$ is coamenable, complete positive definiteness may be replaced with the weaker notion of positive definiteness, which models the classical notion. A counterexample is given to show that the latter result is not true in general. To prove these results, we show two auxiliary results of independent interest: products are linearly dense in $\lone_\sharp(\G)$, and when $\G$ is coamenable, the Banach *-algebra $\lone_\sharp(\G)$ has a contractive bounded approximate identity.

Idempotent states on locally compact groups and quantum groups

This is a short survey on idempotent states on locally compact groups and locally compact quantum groups. The central topic is the relationship between idempotent states, subgroups and invariant C*-subalgebras. We concentrate on recent results on locally compact quantum groups, but begin with the classical notion of idempotent probability measure. We also consider the `intermediate' case of idempotent states in the Fourier--Stieltjes algebra: this is the dual case of idempotent probability measures and so an instance of idempotent states on a locally compact quantum group.

Uniformly equicontinuous sets, right multiplier topology, and continuity of convolution

The dual space of the C*-algebra of bounded uniformly continuous functions on a uniform space carries several natural topologies. One of these is the topology of uniform convergence on bounded uniformly equicontinuous sets, or the UEB topology for short. In the particular case of a topological group and its right uniformity, the UEB topology plays a significant role in the continuity of convolution. In this paper we derive a useful characterisation of bounded uniformly equicontinuous sets on locally compact groups. Then we demonstrate that for every locally compact group G the UEB topology on the space of finite Radon measures on G coincides with the right multiplier topology. In this sense the UEB topology is a generalisation to arbitrary topological groups of the multiplier topology for locally compact groups. In the final section we prove results about UEB continuity of convolution.

Compact quantum subgroups and left invariant C*-subalgebras of locally compact quantum groups

We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between compact quantum subgroups of a co-amenable locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ and certain left invariant C*-subalgebras of $C_0(\mathbb{G})$. We also prove that every compact quantum subgroup of a co-amenable quantum group is co-amenable. Moreover, there is a one-to-one correspondence between open subgroups of an amenable locally compact group $G$ and non-zero, invariant C*-subalgebras of the group C*-algebra $C^*(G)$.

Subgroups and strictly closed invariant C*-subalgebras

We characterise the strictly closed left invariant C*-subalgebras of the C*-algebra C_b(G) of bounded continuous functions on a locally compact group G. On the dual side, we characterise the strictly closed invariant C*-subalgebras of the multiplier algebra of the reduced group C*-algebra C*_r(G) when G is amenable. In both cases, these C*-subalgebras correspond to closed subgroups of G.

Idempotent states on locally compact quantum groups

Idempotent states on a unimodular coamenable locally compact quantum group A are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with right invariant expected C*-subalgebras of A. Haar idempotents, that is, idempotent states arising as Haar states on compact quantum subgroups of A, are characterised and shown to be invariant under the natural action of the modular element. This leads to the one-to-one correspondence between Haar idempotents on A and right invariant symmetric expected C*-subalgebras of A without the unimodularity assumption. Finally the tools developed in the first part of the paper are applied to show that the coproduct of a coamenable locally compact quantum group restricts to a continuous coaction on each right invariant expected C*-subalgebra.
