Universal Adversarial Backdoor Attacks to Fool Vertical Federated Learning in Cloud-Edge Collaboration

Vertical federated learning (VFL) is a cloud-edge collaboration paradigm that enables edge nodes, comprising resource-constrained Internet of Things (IoT) devices, to cooperatively train artificial intelligence (AI) models while retaining their data locally. This paradigm facilitates improved privacy and security for edges and IoT devices, making VFL an essential component of Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) systems. Nevertheless, the partitioned structure of VFL can be exploited by adversaries to inject a backdoor, enabling them to manipulate the VFL predictions. In this paper, we aim to investigate the vulnerability of VFL in the context of binary classification tasks. To this end, we define a threat model for backdoor attacks in VFL and introduce a universal adversarial backdoor (UAB) attack to poison the predictions of VFL. The UAB attack, consisting of universal trigger generation and clean-label backdoor injection, is incorporated during the VFL training at specific iterations. This is achieved by alternately optimizing the universal trigger and model parameters of VFL sub-problems. Our work distinguishes itself from existing studies on designing backdoor attacks for VFL, as those require the knowledge of auxiliary information not accessible within the split VFL architecture. In contrast, our approach does not necessitate any additional data to execute the attack. On the LendingClub and Zhongyuan datasets, our approach surpasses existing state-of-the-art methods, achieving up to 100\% backdoor task performance while maintaining the main task performance. Our results in this paper make a major advance to revealing the hidden backdoor risks of VFL, hence paving the way for the future development of secure AIoT.

The Garnett-Jones Theorem on BMO spaces associated with operators and applications

Let $X$ be a metric space with doubling measure, and $L$ be a nonnegative self-adjoint operator on $L^2(X)$ whose heat kernel satisfies the Gaussian upper bound. Let $f$ be in the space $ {\rm BMO}_L(X)$ associated with the operator $L$ and we define its distance from the subspace $L^{\infty}(X)$ under the $ {\rm BMO}_L(X)$ norm as follows: $$ {\rm dist} (f, L^{\infty}):= \inf_{g\in L^{\infty}} \|f -g\|_{{\rm BMO}_L(X)}. $$ In this paper we prove that ${\rm dist} (f, L^{\infty})$ is equivalent to the infimum of the constant $\varepsilon$ in the John-Nirenberg inequality for the space ${\rm BMO}_L(X)$: $$ \sup_B { μ\big(\{ x\in B: |f(x)-e^{-{r_B^2}L}f(x)|>λ\}\big) \over μ(B)} \leq e^{-λ/\varepsilon}\ \ \ \ {\rm for\ large\ } λ. $$ This extends the well-known result of Garnett and Jones \cite{GJ1} for the classical ${\rm BMO}$ space (introduced by John and Nirenberg). As an application, we show that a ${\rm BMO}_L(X)$ function with compact support can be decomposed as the summation of an $L^\infty$-function and the integral of the heat kernel (associated with $L$) against a finite Carleson measure on $X\times[0,\infty)$. The key new technique is a geometric construction involving the semigroup $e^{-tL}$. We also resort to several fundamental tools including the stopping time argument and the random dyadic lattice.

BEVHeight: A Robust Framework for Vision-based Roadside 3D Object Detection

While most recent autonomous driving system focuses on developing perception methods on ego-vehicle sensors, people tend to overlook an alternative approach to leverage intelligent roadside cameras to extend the perception ability beyond the visual range. We discover that the state-of-the-art vision-centric bird's eye view detection methods have inferior performances on roadside cameras. This is because these methods mainly focus on recovering the depth regarding the camera center, where the depth difference between the car and the ground quickly shrinks while the distance increases. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective approach, dubbed BEVHeight, to address this issue. In essence, instead of predicting the pixel-wise depth, we regress the height to the ground to achieve a distance-agnostic formulation to ease the optimization process of camera-only perception methods. On popular 3D detection benchmarks of roadside cameras, our method surpasses all previous vision-centric methods by a significant margin. The code is available at {\url{https://github.com/ADLab-AutoDrive/BEVHeight}}.

URGLQ: An Efficient Covariance Matrix Reconstruction Method for Robust Adaptive Beamforming

The computational complexity of the conventional adaptive beamformer is relatively large, and the performance degrades significantly due to the model mismatch errors and the unwanted signals in received data. In this paper, an efficient unwanted signal removal and Gauss-Legendre quadrature (URGLQ)-based covariance matrix reconstruction method is proposed. Different from the prior covariance matrix reconstruction methods, a projection matrix is constructed to remove the unwanted signal from the received data, which improves the reconstruction accuracy of the covariance matrix. Considering that the computational complexity of most matrix reconstruction algorithms is relatively large due to the integral operation, we proposed a Gauss-Legendre quadrature-based method to approximate the integral operation while maintaining accuracy. Moreover, to improve the robustness of the beamformer, the mismatch in the desired steering vector is corrected by maximizing the output power of the beamformer under a constraint that the corrected steering vector cannot converge to any interference steering vector. Simulation results and prototype experiments demonstrate that the performance of the proposed beamformer outperforms the compared methods and is much closer to the optimal beamformer in different scenarios.

Internal Structure Attention Network for Fingerprint Presentation Attack Detection from Optical Coherence Tomography

As a non-invasive optical imaging technique, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has proven promising for automatic fingerprint recognition system (AFRS) applications. Diverse approaches have been proposed for OCT-based fingerprint presentation attack detection (PAD). However, considering the complexity and variety of PA samples, it is extremely challenging to increase the generalization ability with the limited PA dataset. To solve the challenge, this paper presents a novel supervised learning-based PAD method, denoted as ISAPAD, which applies prior knowledge to guide network training and enhance the generalization ability. The proposed dual-branch architecture can not only learns global features from the OCT image, but also concentrate on layered structure feature which comes from the internal structure attention module (ISAM). The simple yet effective ISAM enables the proposed network to obtain layered segmentation features belonging only to Bonafide from noisy OCT volume data directly. Combined with effective training strategies and PAD score generation rules, ISAPAD obtains optimal PAD performance in limited training data. Domain generalization experiments and visualization analysis validate the effectiveness of the proposed method for OCT PAD.

DEHRFormer: Real-time Transformer for Depth Estimation and Haze Removal from Varicolored Haze Scenes

Varicolored haze caused by chromatic casts poses haze removal and depth estimation challenges. Recent learning-based depth estimation methods are mainly targeted at dehazing first and estimating depth subsequently from haze-free scenes. This way, the inner connections between colored haze and scene depth are lost. In this paper, we propose a real-time transformer for simultaneous single image Depth Estimation and Haze Removal (DEHRFormer). DEHRFormer consists of a single encoder and two task-specific decoders. The transformer decoders with learnable queries are designed to decode coupling features from the task-agnostic encoder and project them into clean image and depth map, respectively. In addition, we introduce a novel learning paradigm that utilizes contrastive learning and domain consistency learning to tackle weak-generalization problem for real-world dehazing, while predicting the same depth map from the same scene with varicolored haze. Experiments demonstrate that DEHRFormer achieves significant performance improvement across diverse varicolored haze scenes over previous depth estimation networks and dehazing approaches.

MSP-Former: Multi-Scale Projection Transformer for Single Image Desnowing

Snow removal causes challenges due to its characteristic of complex degradations. To this end, targeted treatment of multi-scale snow degradations is critical for the network to learn effective snow removal. In order to handle the diverse scenes, we propose a multi-scale projection transformer (MSP-Former), which understands and covers a variety of snow degradation features in a multi-path manner, and integrates comprehensive scene context information for clean reconstruction via self-attention operation. For the local details of various snow degradations, the local capture module is introduced in parallel to assist in the rebuilding of a clean image. Such design achieves the SOTA performance on three desnowing benchmark datasets while costing the low parameters and computational complexity, providing a guarantee of practicality.

A weighted L^2 estimate of Commutators of Bochner-Riesz Operators for Hermite operator

Let H be the Hermite operator -Δ+|x|^2 on \mathbb{R}^n. We prove a weighted L^2 estimate of the maximal commutator operator \sup_{R>0}|[b, S_R^λ(H)](f)|, where [b, S_R^λ(H)](f) = bS_R^λ(H) f - S_R^λ(H)(bf) is the commutator of a BMO function b and the Bochner-Riesz means S_R^λ(H) for the Hermite operator H. As an application, we obtain the almost everywhere convergence of [b, S_R^λ(H)](f) for large λand f\in L^p(\mathbb{R}^n).

Evidence of high-temperature exciton condensation in a two-dimensional semimetal

Electrons and holes can spontaneously form excitons and condense in a semimetal or semiconductor, as predicted decades ago. This type of Bose condensation can happen at much higher temperatures in comparison with dilute atomic gases. Two-dimensional (2D) materials with reduced Coulomb screening around the Fermi level are promising for realizing such a system. Here we report a change in the band structure accompanied by a phase transition at about 180 K in single-layer ZrTe2 based on angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. Below the transition temperature, gap opening and development of an ultra-flat band top around the zone center are observed. This gap and the phase transition are rapidly suppressed with extra carrier densities introduced by adding more layers or dopants on the surface. The results suggest the formation of an excitonic insulating ground state in single-layer ZrTe2, and the findings are rationalized by first principles calculations and a self-consistent mean-field theory. Our study provides evidence for exciton condensation in a 2D semimetal and demonstrates strong dimensionality effects on the formation of intrinsic bound electron-hole pairs in solids.

A Greedy Sensor Selection Algorithm for Hyperparameterized Linear Bayesian Inverse Problems

We consider optimal sensor placement for a family of linear Bayesian inverse problems characterized by a deterministic hyper-parameter. The hyper-parameter describes distinct configurations in which measurements can be taken of the observed physical system. To optimally reduce the uncertainty in the system's model with a single set of sensors, the initial sensor placement needs to account for the non-linear state changes of all admissible configurations. We address this requirement through an observability coefficient which links the posteriors' uncertainties directly to the choice of sensors. We propose a greedy sensor selection algorithm to iteratively improve the observability coefficient for all configurations through orthogonal matching pursuit. The algorithm allows explicitly correlated noise models even for large sets of candidate sensors, and remains computationally efficient for high-dimensional forward models through model order reduction. We demonstrate our approach on a large-scale geophysical model of the Perth Basin, and provide numerical studies regarding optimality and scalability with regard to classic optimal experimental design utility functions.

Multivariate stable approximation in Wasserstein distance by Stein's method

By a delicate analysis for the Stein's equation associated to the $α$-stable law approximation with $α\in (0,2)$, we prove a quantitative stable central limit theorem in Wasserstein type distance, which generalizes the results in the series of work \cite{Xu19, CNX19+,CNXYZ19+} from the univariate case to the multiple variate case. From an explicit computation for Pareto's distribution, we see that the rate of our approximation is sharp. The analysis of the Stein's equation is new and has independent interest.

Toward arbitrary spin-orbit flat optics via structured geometric phase gratings

Reciprocal spin-orbit coupling (SOC) via geometric phase with flat optics provides a promising platform for shaping and controlling paraxial structured light. Current devices, from the pioneering q-plates to the recent J-plates, provide only spin-dependent wavefront modulation without amplitude control. However, achieving control over all the spatial dimensions of paraxial SOC states requires spin-dependent control of corresponding complex amplitude, which remains challenging for flat optics. Here, to address this issue, we present a new type of flat-optics elements termed structured geometric phase gratings that is capable of conjugated complex-amplitude control for orthogonal input circular polarizations. By using a microstructured liquid crystal photoalignment technique, we engineered a series of flat-optics elements and experimentally showed their excellent precision in arbitrary SOC control. This principle unlocks the full-field control of paraxial structured light via flat optics, providing a promising way to develop an information exchange and processing units for general photonic SOC states, as well as extra-/intracavity mode convertors for high-precision laser beam shaping.

Voltage-Controlled Magnon Transistor via Tunning Interfacial Exchange Coupling

Magnon transistors that can effectively regulate magnon transport by an electric field are desired for magnonics which aims to provide a Joule-heating free alternative to the conventional electronics owing to the electric neutrality of magnons (the key carriers of spin-angular momenta in the magnonics). However, also due to their electric neutrality, magnons have no access to directly interact with an electric field and it is thus difficult to manipulate magnon transport by voltages straightforwardly. Here, we demonstrated a gate voltage ($V_{\rm g}$) applied on a nonmagnetic metal/magnetic insulator (NM/MI) interface that bended the energy band of the MI and then modulated the possibility for conduction electrons in the NM to tunnel into the MI can consequently enhance or weaken the spin-magnon conversion efficiency at the interface. A voltage-controlled magnon transistor based on the magnon-mediated electric current drag (MECD) effect in a Pt/Y$_{\rm 3}$Fe$_{\rm 5}$O$_{\rm 12}$ (YIG)/Pt sandwich was then experimentally realized with $V_{\rm g}$ modulating the magnitude of the MECD signal. The obtained efficiency (the change ratio between the MECD voltage at $\pm V_{\rm g}$) reached 10%/(MV/cm) at 300 K. This prototype of magnon transistor offers an effective scheme to control magnon transport by a gate voltage.

Image Gradient Decomposition for Parallel and Memory-Efficient Ptychographic Reconstruction

Ptychography is a popular microscopic imaging modality for many scientific discoveries and sets the record for highest image resolution. Unfortunately, the high image resolution for ptychographic reconstruction requires significant amount of memory and computations, forcing many applications to compromise their image resolution in exchange for a smaller memory footprint and a shorter reconstruction time. In this paper, we propose a novel image gradient decomposition method that significantly reduces the memory footprint for ptychographic reconstruction by tessellating image gradients and diffraction measurements into tiles. In addition, we propose a parallel image gradient decomposition method that enables asynchronous point-to-point communications and parallel pipelining with minimal overhead on a large number of GPUs. Our experiments on a Titanate material dataset (PbTiO3) with 16632 probe locations show that our Gradient Decomposition algorithm reduces memory footprint by 51 times. In addition, it achieves time-to-solution within 2.2 minutes by scaling to 4158 GPUs with a super-linear strong scaling efficiency at 364% compared to runtimes at 6 GPUs. This performance is 2.7 times more memory efficient, 9 times more scalable and 86 times faster than the state-of-the-art algorithm.

Synthesize Boundaries: A Boundary-aware Self-consistent Framework for Weakly Supervised Salient Object Detection

Fully supervised salient object detection (SOD) has made considerable progress based on expensive and time-consuming data with pixel-wise annotations. Recently, to relieve the labeling burden while maintaining performance, some scribble-based SOD methods have been proposed. However, learning precise boundary details from scribble annotations that lack edge information is still difficult. In this paper, we propose to learn precise boundaries from our designed synthetic images and labels without introducing any extra auxiliary data. The synthetic image creates boundary information by inserting synthetic concave regions that simulate the real concave regions of salient objects. Furthermore, we propose a novel self-consistent framework that consists of a global integral branch (GIB) and a boundary-aware branch (BAB) to train a saliency detector. GIB aims to identify integral salient objects, whose input is the original image. BAB aims to help predict accurate boundaries, whose input is the synthetic image. These two branches are connected through a self-consistent loss to guide the saliency detector to predict precise boundaries while identifying salient objects. Experimental results on five benchmarks demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art weakly supervised SOD methods and further narrows the gap with the fully supervised methods.

Microscopic Origin of the Electric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

The microscopic origin of the electric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (eDMI) is unveiled and discussed by analytical analysis and first-principles based calculations. As similar to the magnetic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (mDMI), eDMI also originates from electron-mediated effect and more specifically from certain electron hoppings that are being activated due to certain local inversion symmetry breaking. However, the eDMI energy is found to be at least a third-order interaction in atomic displacements instead of bilinear in magnetic dipole moments for mDMI. Furthermore, the eDMI energy form is presented, and we find that novel electrical topological defects (namely, chiral electric bobbers) can arise from this eDMI. Thus unraveling the microscopic origin of eDMI has the potential to lead to, and explain, the discovery of novel polar topological phases.

$α$ DARTS Once More: Enhancing Differentiable Architecture Search by Masked Image Modeling

Differentiable architecture search (DARTS) has been a mainstream direction in automatic machine learning. Since the discovery that original DARTS will inevitably converge to poor architectures, recent works alleviate this by either designing rule-based architecture selection techniques or incorporating complex regularization techniques, abandoning the simplicity of the original DARTS that selects architectures based on the largest parametric value, namely $α$. Moreover, we find that all the previous attempts only rely on classification labels, hence learning only single modal information and limiting the representation power of the shared network. To this end, we propose to additionally inject semantic information by formulating a patch recovery approach. Specifically, we exploit the recent trending masked image modeling and do not abandon the guidance from the downstream tasks during the search phase. Our method surpasses all previous DARTS variants and achieves state-of-the-art results on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and ImageNet without complex manual-designed strategies.
