Sparse Quadrature for High-Dimensional Integration with Gaussian Measure

In this work we analyze the dimension-independent convergence property of an abstract sparse quadrature scheme for numerical integration of functions of high-dimensional parameters with Gaussian measure. Under certain assumptions of the exactness and the boundedness of univariate quadrature rules as well as the regularity of the parametric functions with respect to the parameters, we obtain the convergence rate $O(N^{-s})$, where $N$ is the number of indices, and $s$ is independent of the number of the parameter dimensions. Moreover, we propose both an a-priori and an a-posteriori schemes for the construction of a practical sparse quadrature rule and perform numerical experiments to demonstrate their dimension-independent convergence rates.

Hessian-based adaptive sparse quadrature for infinite-dimensional Bayesian inverse problems

In this work we propose and analyze a Hessian-based adaptive sparse quadrature to compute infinite-dimensional integrals with respect to the posterior distribution in the context of Bayesian inverse problems with Gaussian prior. Due to the concentration of the posterior distribution in the domain of the prior distribution, a prior-based parametrization and sparse quadrature may fail to capture the posterior distribution and lead to erroneous evaluation results. By using a parametrization based on the Hessian of the negative log-posterior, the adaptive sparse quadrature can effectively allocate the quadrature points according to the posterior distribution. A dimension-independent convergence rate of the proposed method is established under certain assumptions on the Gaussian prior and the integrands. Dimension-independent and faster convergence than $O(N^{-1/2})$ is demonstrated for a linear as well as a nonlinear inverse problem whose posterior distribution can be effectively approximated by a Gaussian distribution at the MAP point.

Carleson measures, BMO spaces and balayages associated to Schrodinger operators

Let $Ł$ be a Schrödinger operator of the form $Ł=-Δ+V$ acting on $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$, $n\geq3$, where the nonnegative potential $V$ belongs to the reverse Hölder class $B_q$ for some $q\geq n.$ Let ${\rm BMO}_{\mathcal{L}}(\RR)$ denote the BMO space associated to the Schrödinger operator $Ł$ on $\RR$. In this article we show that for every $f\in {\rm BMO}_{\mathcal{L}}(\RR)$ with compact support, then there exist $g\in L^{\infty}(\RR)$ and a finite Carleson measure $μ$ such that $$ f(x)=g(x) + S_{μ, {\mathcal P}}(x) $$ with $\|g\|_{\infty} +\||μ\||_{c}\leq C \|f\|_{{\rm BMO}_{\mathcal{L}}(\RR)},$ where $$ S_{μ, {\mathcal P}}=\int_{{\mathbb R}^{n+1}_+} {\mathcal P}_t(x,y) dμ(y, t), $$ and ${\mathcal P}_t(x,y)$ is the kernel of the Poisson semigroup $\{e^{-t\sqrtŁ}\}_{t> 0} $ on $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$. Conversely, if $μ$ is a Carleson measure, then $S_{μ, {\mathcal P}}$ belongs to the space ${\rm BMO}_{\mathcal{L}}(\RR)$. This extends the result for the classical John--Nirenberg BMO space by Carleson \cite{C} (see also \cite{U,GJ,W}) to the BMO setting associated to Schrödinger operators.

Strain-controlled Insulator-Metal Transition in YTiO3/SrTiO3 Superlattices: A First-Principles Study

The structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of (STO)$_4$/(YTO)$_2$ superlattice consisting of Mott insulator YTiO$_3$ (YTO) and band insulator SrTiO$_3$ (STO) under strain are investigated by the density-functional-theory plus \emph{U} method. It is found that an insulator-metal transition occurs when a compressive strain of 0.2\% is applied. The structural analyses reveal that the presence of metallic state in such superlattices accompanies structural phase transition with restoring of inversion symmetry. Further study shows that this strain-induced structural transition makes the $d$ energy level of the interfacial Ti atoms of the YTO layer move upward due to the decreasing of the TiO$_{6}$ octahedral volume and induces the electron reconstruction in the whole superlattice systems. In addition, when the on-site interaction $U$ is changed from 5 to 4 eV, a similar insulator-metal transition also occurs in such superlattices due to the weakened electron correlation. These findings can improve our understanding of the insulator-metal transitions in such oxide superlattices.

Intrinsic ferromagnetism and quantum anomalous Hall effect in CoBr2 monolayer

The electronic, magnetic, and topological properties of CoBr2 monolayer are studied in the frame-work of the density-functional theory (DFT) combined with tight-binding (TB) modeling in terms of Wannier basis. Our DFT investigation and Monte Carlo simulation show that there exists intrinsic two-dimensional ferromagnetism in the CoBr2 monolayer thanks to large out-of-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropic energy. Our further study shows that the spin-orbits coupling makes it become a topologically nontrivial insulator with quantum anomalous Hall effect and topological Chern number C=4, and its edge states can be manipulated by changing the width of its nanoribbons and applying strains. The CoBr2 monolayer can be exfoliated from the layered CoBr2 bulk material because its exfoliation energy is between those of graphene and MoS2 monolayer and it is dynamically stable. These results make us believe that the CoBr2 monolayer can make a promising spintronic material for future high-performance devices.

Elemental topological Dirac semimetal: α-Sn on InSb(111)

Three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetals (TDSs) are rare but important as a versatile platform for exploring exotic electronic properties and topological phase transitions. A quintessential feature of TDSs is 3D Dirac fermions associated with bulk electronic states near the Fermi level. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we have observed such bulk Dirac cones in epitaxially-grown α-Sn films on InSb(111), the first such TDS system realized in an elemental form. First-principles calculations confirm that epitaxial strain is key to the formation of the TDS phase. A phase diagram is established that connects the 3D TDS phase through a singular point of a zero-gap semimetal phase to a topological insulator (TI) phase. The nature of the Dirac cone crosses over from 3D to 2D as the film thickness is reduced.

Generating strong cylindrical vector pulses via stimulated Brillouin amplification

Light with transverse polarization structure, such as radial and azimuthal polarization, enables and revives lots of applications based on light-matter interaction due to their unique focal properties. To date, studies referring to this topic mainly concentrate in weak-light domain, yet it should have gained more attention in strong-light domain. A main factor contributing to the current situation is that the generation devices cannot afford high power. Here, in this proof-of-principle work, we demonstrate the generation of strong single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) cylindrical vector (CV) short pulses via stimulated Brillouin amplification, specifically, the energy is transferred from a 700 ps pump to a 300 ps Stokes pulse via parametrically generated coherent phonons. After amplification, a 100 mJ-level SLM CV pulse light with 300 ps duration is obtained. Meanwhile, the phase and polarization structures are high fidelity maintained. This result provides a practicable way to generate strong CV light, and by extending this mechanism into multi-pump beam combing system, even an ultra-high intensity CV light can be expected.

Giant ferroelectric polarization and electric reversal of strong spontaneous magnetization in multiferroic Bi2FeMoO6

BiFeO$_3$ is the most famous multiferroic material, but it has no strong spontaneous magnetization due to its antiferromagnetism. Here we show that giant ferroelectric polarization and strong spontaneous magnetization can be both realized in double perovskite Bi$_2$FeMoO$_6$ with R3 (\#146) space group based on BiFeO$_3$. Our first-principles phonon spectra establishes that this multiferroic R3 phase is stable. Our systematic calculations show that it is a spin-polarized semiconductor with gap reaching to 0.54 eV and has a strong ferroelectric polarization of 85$μ$C/cm$^2$. This ferroelctricity is comparable with that of BiFeO$_3$, but here obtained is a strong ferrimagnetism with net magnetic moment of 2$μ_B$ per formula unit and Curie temperature of 650 K. Both ferroelectric polarization and magnetic easy axis are shown to be in pseudocubic [111] orientation. Our further analysis shows that the macroscopic spontaneous magnetization can be deterministically reversed through a three-step path by external electric field. Therefore, we believe that this Bi$_2$FeMoO$_6$ material can be used to design new multifunctional materials and achieve high-performance devices.

Spectral multipliers via resolvent type estimates on non-homogeneous metric measure spaces

We describe a simple but surprisingly effective technique of obtaining spectral multiplier results for abstract operators which satisfy the finite propagation speed property for the corresponding wave equation propagator. We show that, in this setting, spectral multipliers follow from resolvent type estimates. The most notable point of the paper is that our approach is very flexible and can be applied even if the corresponding ambient space does not satisfy the doubling condition or if the semigroup generated by an operator is not uniformly bounded. As a corollary we obtain the $L^p$ spectrum independence for several second order differential operators and recover some known results. Our examples include the Laplace-Belltrami operator on manifolds with ends and Schrödinger operators with strongly subcritical potentials.

Exponential-square integrability, weighted inequalities for the square functions associated to operators and applications

Let $X$ be a metric space with a doubling measure. Let $L$ be a nonnegative self-adjoint operator acting on $L^2(X)$, hence $L$ generates an analytic semigroup $e^{-tL}$. Assume that the kernels $p_t(x,y)$ of $e^{-tL}$ satisfy Gaussian upper bounds and Hölder's continuity in $x$ but we do not require the semigroup to satisfy the preservation condition $e^{-tL}1 = 1$. In this article we aim to establish the exponential-square integrability of a function whose square function associated to an operator $L$ is bounded, and the proof is new even for the Laplace operator on the Euclidean spaces ${\mathbb R^n}$. We then apply this result to obtain: (i) estimates of the norm on $L^p$ as $p$ becomes large for operators such as the square functions or spectral multipliers; (ii) weighted norm inequalities for the square functions; and (iii) eigenvalue estimates for Schrödinger operators on ${\mathbb R}^n$ or Lipschitz domains of ${\mathbb R}^n$.

Classifying CP transformations according to their texture zeros: theory and implications

We provide a classification of generalized CP symmetries preserved by the neutrino mass matrix according to the number of zero entries in the associated transformation matrix. We determine the corresponding constrained form of the lepton mixing matrix, characterized by correlations between the mixing angles and the CP violating phases. We compare with the corresponding restrictions from current neutrino oscillation global fits and show that, in some cases, the Dirac CP phase characterizing oscillations is highly constrained. Implications for current and upcoming long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments T2K, NO$ν$A and DUNE, as well as neutrinoless double beta decay experiments are discussed. We also study the cosmological implications of such schemes for leptogenesis.

Subnatural-linewidth biphotons from a Doppler-broadened hot atomic vapor cell

We report the efficient generation of subnatural-linewidth (< 6 MHz, for Rb D1/D2 lines) biphotons from a Doppler-broadened (530 MHz) hot atomic vapor cell. We use on-resonance spontaneous four-wave mixing in a hot paraffin-coated 87Rb vapor cell at 63 C to produce time-frequency entangled photon pairs with controllable bandwidth (1.9 - 3.2 MHz) and coherence time (47 - 94 ns). Our backward phase-matching scheme with optical pumping is the key to minimize the generation of uncorrelated photons from resonance fluorescence. The result paves the way toward miniature narrowband biphoton source based on atomic cells

Leptogenesis and residual CP symmetry

We discuss flavour dependent leptogenesis in the framework of lepton flavour models based on discrete flavour and CP symmetries applied to the type-I seesaw model. Working in the flavour basis, we analyse the case of two general residual CP symmetries in the neutrino sector, which corresponds to all possible semi-direct models based on a preserved $Z_2$ in the neutrino sector, together with a CP symmetry, which constrains the PMNS matrix up to a single free parameter which may be fixed by the reactor angle. We systematically study and classify this case for all possible residual CP symmetries, and show that the $R$-matrix is tightly constrained up to a single free parameter, with only certain forms being consistent with successful leptogenesis, leading to possible connections between leptogenesis and PMNS parameters. The formalism is completely general in the sense that the two residual CP symmetries could result from any high energy discrete flavour theory which respects any CP symmetry. As a simple example, we apply the formalism to a high energy $S_4$ flavour symmetry with a generalized CP symmetry, broken to two residual CP symmetries in the neutrino sector, recovering familiar results for PMNS predictions, together with new results for flavour dependent leptogenesis.

Exotic superfluid of trapped Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling in dimensional crossover

We have studied the exotic superfluid phases of degenerated Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling in a mixed dimensional system, where the motion of atoms are free in the x-direction and the tunneling between nearest tubes in the y-direction is permitted. Using the mean-field method, we obtain the phase diagrams of the system during the dimensional crossover between quasi one dimension to quasi two dimension. We find the existence of the topological state and Majorana edge mode in the weak tunneling case, and a rich phase diagram including two kinds of nodal superfluid phase and gapped superfluid phase in the opposite case. Our results show that topological pairing is favoured in quasi one dimension while nodal pairing state is favoured in quasi two dimension.

Generalized $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry and leptonic CP violation

We propose a generalized $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry to constrain the lepton flavor mixing parameters. We obtain a new correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ and the "Dirac" CP violation phase $δ_{\rm CP}$. Only in a specific limit our proposed CP transformation reduces to standard $μ-τ$ reflection, for which $θ_{23}$ and $δ_{CP}$ are both maximal. The "Majorana" phases are predicted to lie at their CP-conserving values with important implications for the neutrinoless double beta decay rates. We also study the phenomenological implications of our scheme for present and future neutrino oscillation experiments including T2K, NO$ν$A and DUNE.

Marcinkiewicz-type spectral multipliers on Hardy and Lebesgue spaces on product spaces of homogeneous type

Let $X_1$ and $X_2$ be metric spaces equipped with doubling measures and let $L_1$ and $L_2$ be nonnegative self-adjoint second-order operators acting on $L^2(X_1)$ and $L^2(X_2)$ respectively. We study multivariable spectral multipliers $F(L_1, L_2)$ acting on the Cartesian product of $X_1$ and $X_2$. Under the assumptions of the finite propagation speed property and Plancherel or Stein--Tomas restriction type estimates on the operators $L_1$ and~$L_2$, we show that if a function~$F$ satisfies a Marcinkiewicz-type differential condition then the spectral multiplier operator $F(L_1, L_2)$ is bounded from appropriate Hardy spaces to Lebesgue spaces on the product space $X_1\times X_2$. We apply our results to the analysis of second-order elliptic operators in the product setting, specifically Riesz-transform-like operators and double Bochner--Riesz means.

Product Hardy spaces associated to operators with heat kernel bounds on spaces of homogeneous type

The aim of this article is to develop the theory of product Hardy spaces associated with operators which possess the weak assumption of Davies--Gaffney heat kernel estimates, in the setting of spaces of homogeneous type. We also establish a Calderón--Zygmund decomposition on product spaces, which is of independent interest, and use it to study the interpolation of these product Hardy spaces. We then show that under the assumption of generalized Gaussian estimates, the product Hardy spaces coincide with the Lebesgue spaces, for an appropriate range of~$p$.

To What Extent Is Stress Testing of Android TV Applications Automated in Industrial Environments?

An Android-based smart Television (TV) must reliably run its applications in an embedded program environment under diverse hardware resource conditions. Owing to the diverse hardware components used to build numerous TV models, TV simulators are usually not high enough in fidelity to simulate various TV models, and thus are only regarded as unreliable alternatives when stress testing such applications. Therefore, even though stress testing on real TV sets is tedious, it is the de facto approach to ensure the reliability of these applications in the industry. In this paper, we study to what extent stress testing of smart TV applications can be fully automated in the industrial environments. To the best of our knowledge, no previous work has addressed this important question. We summarize the find-ings collected from 10 industrial test engineers to have tested 20 such TV applications in a real production environment. Our study shows that the industry required test automation supports on high-level GUI object controls and status checking, setup of resource conditions and the interplay between the two. With such supports, 87% of the industrial test specifications of one TV model can be fully automated and 71.4% of them were found to be fully reusable to test a subsequent TV model with major up-grades of hardware, operating system and application. It repre-sents a significant improvement with margins of 28% and 38%, respectively, compared to stress testing without such supports.
