New HI observations Toward the NGC 5055 Galaxy Group with FAST

We report a new high-sensitivity HI mapping observation of the NGC 5055 galaxy group over an area of $1.^\circ5\times0.^\circ75$ with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Our observation reveals that the warped H\,{\sc i} disk of NGC~5055 is more extended than what previously observed by WSRT, out to $ 23.'9$ (61.7 kpc). The total HI mass of NGC 5055 is determined to be $\rm\sim 1.1\times10^{10}\,M_\odot$. We identified three HI clouds with HI masses of the order of $\rm \sim 10^7\,M_\odot$ at the southeastern edge of the HI disk, as well as a candidate high-velocity cloud with an HI mass of $\rm (1.2\pm0.5) \times10^6\,M_\odot$ to the north of NGC 5055. The HI content of UGCA 337 is robustly detected for the first time by the FAST observations. It has a narrow HI linewidth of $W_{50}=17.4\pm3.8$ km s$^{-1}$ with a total \HI\ mass of ($\rm 3.5\pm0.3)\times10^6\,M_\odot$. Comparing the gas content and g-r color of UGCA 337 with typical low-mass dwarf galaxies, UGCA~337 appears relatively gas-poor despite its blue color. This suggests that UGCA 337 may have undergone gas stripping in the past. We also analyzed the possible origin of the diffuse HI clouds located at the outskirts of NGC 5055, and speculate that they might be the remnant features of a merger event in the past.

Pathfinding pulsar observations with the CVN incorporating the FAST

The importance of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) for pulsar research is becoming increasingly prominent and receiving more and more attention. In this paper, we present pathfinding pulsar observation results with the Chinese VLBI Network (CVN) incorporating the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). On MJD 60045 (April 11th, 2023), PSRs B0919+06 and B1133+16 were observed with the phase-referencing mode in the L-band using four radio telescopes (FAST, TianMa, Haoping and Nanshan) and correlated with the pulsar binning mode of the distributed FX-style software correlator in Shanghai. After further data processing with the NRAO Astronomical Image Processing System (AIPS), we detected these two pulsars and fitted their current positions with accuracy at the milliarcsecond level. By comparison, our results show significantly better agreement with predicted values based on historical VLBI observations than that with previous timing observations, as pulsar astrometry with the VLBI provides a more direct and model-independent method for accurately obtaining related parameters.

Beam Profiling and Beamforming Modeling for mmWave NextG Networks

This paper presents an experimental study on mmWave beam profiling on a mmWave testbed, and develops a machine learning model for beamforming based on the experiment data. The datasets we have obtained from the beam profiling and the machine learning model for beamforming are valuable for a broad set of network design problems, such as network topology optimization, user equipment association, power allocation, and beam scheduling, in complex and dynamic mmWave networks. We have used two commercial-grade mmWave testbeds with operational frequencies on the 27 Ghz and 71 GHz, respectively, for beam profiling. The obtained datasets were used to train the machine learning model to estimate the received downlink signal power, and data rate at the receivers (user equipment with different geographical locations in the range of a transmitter (base station). The results have shown high prediction accuracy with low mean square error (loss), indicating the model's ability to estimate the received signal power or data rate at each individual receiver covered by a beam. The dataset and the machine learning-based beamforming model can assist researchers in optimizing various network design problems for mmWave networks.

The FAST Core Array

The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) Core Array is a proposed extension of FAST, integrating 24 secondary 40-m antennas implanted within 5 km of the FAST site. This original array design will combine the unprecedented sensitivity of FAST with a high angular resolution (4.3" at a frequency of 1.4 GHz), thereby exceeding the capabilities at similar frequencies of next-generation arrays such as the Square Kilometre Array Phase 1 or the next-generation Very Large Array. This article presents the technical specifications of the FAST Core Array, evaluates its potential relatively to existing radio telescope arrays, and describes its expected scientific prospects. The proposed array will be equipped with technologically advanced backend devices, such as real-time signal processing systems. A phased array feed receiver will be mounted on FAST to improve the survey efficiency of the FAST Core Array, whose broad frequency coverage and large field of view (FOV) will be essential to study transient cosmic phenomena such as fast radio bursts and gravitational wave events, to conduct surveys and resolve structures in neutral hydrogen galaxies, to monitor or detect pulsars, and to investigate exoplanetary systems. Finally, the FAST Core Array can strengthen China's major role in the global radio astronomy community, owing to a wide range of potential scientific applications from cosmology to exoplanet science.

FAST detection of OH emission in the carbon-rich planetary nebula NGC 7027

We present the first detection of the ground-state OH emission line at 1612 MHz toward the prototypical carbon-rich planetary nebula (PN) NGC 7027, utilizing the newly installed ultra-wideband (UWB) receiver of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). This emission is likely to originate from the interface of the neutral shell and the ionized region. The other three ground-state OH lines at 1665, 1667, and 1721 MHz are observed in absorption and have velocities well matched with that of HCO$^+$ absorption. We infer that the OH absorption is from the outer shell of NGC 7027, although the possibility that they are associated with a foreground cloud cannot be completely ruled out. All the OH lines exhibit a single blue-shifted component with respect to the central star. The formation of OH in carbon-rich environments might be via photodissociation-induced chemical processes. Our observations offer significant constraints for chemical simulations, and they underscore the potent capability of the UWB receiver of FAST to search for nascent PNe.

Spatiotemporal Graph Guided Multi-modal Network for Livestreaming Product Retrieval

With the rapid expansion of e-commerce, more consumers have become accustomed to making purchases via livestreaming. Accurately identifying the products being sold by salespeople, i.e., livestreaming product retrieval (LPR), poses a fundamental and daunting challenge. The LPR task encompasses three primary dilemmas in real-world scenarios: 1) the recognition of intended products from distractor products present in the background; 2) the video-image heterogeneity that the appearance of products showcased in live streams often deviates substantially from standardized product images in stores; 3) there are numerous confusing products with subtle visual nuances in the shop. To tackle these challenges, we propose the Spatiotemporal Graphing Multi-modal Network (SGMN). First, we employ a text-guided attention mechanism that leverages the spoken content of salespeople to guide the model to focus toward intended products, emphasizing their salience over cluttered background products. Second, a long-range spatiotemporal graph network is further designed to achieve both instance-level interaction and frame-level matching, solving the misalignment caused by video-image heterogeneity. Third, we propose a multi-modal hard example mining, assisting the model in distinguishing highly similar products with fine-grained features across the video-image-text domain. Through extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments, we demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed SGMN model, surpassing the state-of-the-art methods by a substantial margin. The code is available at https://github.com/Huxiaowan/SGMN.

FAST observations of neutral hydrogen in the interacting galaxies NGC 3395/3396

We report on high-sensitivity neutral hydrogen observations toward the gas-rich interacting galaxies NGC 3395/3396 with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Compared to previous observations carried out by the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), a more extended HI envelope around this system has been detected. The total HI gas mass of the NGC 3395/3396 system is estimated to be 7.8 x 109 M. This value is 2.7 times more than that reported based on the VLA interferometric maps. Previous observations found a large HI tail extending to the south-west and a minor tail emerging from the north of this peculiar galaxy pair. Based on the high-sensitivity observations of FAST, an extended HI plume to the north-west and a gas plume to the north-east have been detected for the first time. Neutral hydrogen of the two smaller galaxies IC 2604 and IC 2608 on the south of the system have also been detected. We discuss the origins of these extra gas and possible tidal interactions between these galaxies. NGC 3395/3396's most prominent tidal feature, the south-west tail combined with the new detected north-west plume behaves like a large ring. We suggest the ring might be formed by the previous fly-by interaction between NGC 3395 and NGC 3396 which happened 500 Myr ago. Our study shows that high-sensitivity HI observations are important in revealing low column density gas, which is crucial to a deeper understanding of this interacting system.

Utility of High-Order Scheme for Unsteady Flow Simulations: Comparison with Second-Order Tool

The objective of this work is to investigate the utility and effectiveness of the high-order scheme for simulating unsteady turbulent flows. To achieve it, the studies were conducted from two perspectives: (i) the ability of different numerical schemes for turbulence problems under the same set of meshes; and (ii) the accuracy and stability of higher-order schemes for solving turbulence statistics for different mesh types (hexahedral, tetrahedral, and polyhedral cells). The simulations employ the third-order scheme for spatial discretization of the governing equations, while a widely-used second-order solver, namely pisoFoam, was employed for comparison. This study considers the canonical cases of the Taylor-Green vortex (TGV) problem at Re=100, 1600 and flow past a sphere at Re=10000 to address the aforementioned two key issues. For the TGV case, the high-order model significantly improves the numerical accuracy with convergence rates and reduces the numerical dissipation of nearly 1/10 of pisoFoam. In the latter case, the high-order scheme with large-eddy simulation (LES) accurately predicts the vortex structures and the flow instability, regardless of grid type. However, pisoFoam is found to be sensitive to mesh types, which results in numerous non-physical structures in the flow field due to numerical noise rather than flow physics, particularly for tetrahedral cells. Furthermore, for the typical low- and high-order flow statistics, the numerical results predicted by the present model show better agreement with the reference data and have less dependence on the type of grids compared with the conventional scheme. In addition, the obtained energy spectrum by the high-order solver accurately captures the Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability and the vortex shedding frequency, while these important features are less pronounced by the traditional low-order model.

Discovery of a Damped Ly$α$ Absorber in the Circumnuclear Zone of the FeLoBAL Quasar SDSS J083942.11+380526.3

SDSS J083942.11+380526.3 ($z=2.315$) is a FeLoBAL quasar that exhibits visible Balmer absorption lines (H$α$), implying a significant $n=2$ population. The quasar also shows an array of absorption lines, including \oi, \niii, \feii, \mgii, \aliii\, to \civ\ and \nv. The high-ionization absorption lines such as \civ\ and \siiv\ are revealed by slightly blueshifted BAL troughs. The resonance doublets such as \mgii\ and \aliii\ are saturated but did not reached zero intensity which indicates that the BLR is partially covered. Overall, however, the absorption is predominantly from low-ionization \feii\ lines, emitted from ground and excited states up to at least 3.814 eV. This implies that the absorbing gas spans the hydrogen ionization front and extends into the partially ionized zone where neutral hydrogen is certainly present. Notably, the hydrogen line spectrum of the quasar shows no signature of expected Ly$α$ absorption. Instead, the line spectrum shows an unusual Ly$α$ emission characterized by a fully filled emission line spectrum which is a composite of a strong narrow core superposed on a weak broad base. Taking into account the effect of partial covering to BLR, we have extracted a strong DLA trough in Ly$α$ emission region. To fit the spectrum, we performed photoionized model calculations and compared them to the observations. We found that photoionization modeling using CLOUDY can successfully reproduce the main characteristics of the quasar spectrum, and the predicted neutral hydrogen column density arising from the clouds responsible for the low-ionization absorption provides a good match to the extracted DLA trough. This indicates that both the DLA and the low-ionization absorption arise from the same medium that is roughly collocated with the dusty torus.

FEASTS Combined with Interferometry (II): Significantly Changed HI Surface Densities and Even More Inefficient Star Formation in Galaxy Outer Disks

We update the HI surface density measurements for a subset of 17 THINGS galaxies by dealing with the short-spacing problem of the original VLA HI images. It is the same sample that Bigiel et al. (2010) used to study the relation between HI surface densities and star formation rate surface densities in galaxy outer disks, which are beyond the optical radius r25. For ten galaxies, the update is based on combining original THINGS VLA HI images with HI images taken by the single-dish FAST in the FEASTS program. The median increment of HI surface densities in outer disks is 0.15 to 0.4 dex at a given new HI surface density. Several galaxies change significantly in the shape of radial profiles HI surface densities, and seven galaxies are now more than 1-$σ$ below the HI size-mass relation. We update the HI star formation laws in outer disks. The median relation between HI surface densities and star formation rate surface densities based on pixelwise measurements shifts downward by around 0.15 dex because the HI surface density values shift rightward, and the scatter increases significantly. The scatter of the relation, indicating the star forming efficiency, exhibits a much stronger positive correlation with the stellar mass surface density than before. Thus, detecting the previously missed, diffuse HI due to short-spacing problem of the VLA observation is important in revealing the true condition and variation of star formation possibly regulated by stellar feedbacks in localized environment of outer disks.

Towards Robust Recommendation via Decision Boundary-aware Graph Contrastive Learning

In recent years, graph contrastive learning (GCL) has received increasing attention in recommender systems due to its effectiveness in reducing bias caused by data sparsity. However, most existing GCL models rely on heuristic approaches and usually assume entity independence when constructing contrastive views. We argue that these methods struggle to strike a balance between semantic invariance and view hardness across the dynamic training process, both of which are critical factors in graph contrastive learning. To address the above issues, we propose a novel GCL-based recommendation framework RGCL, which effectively maintains the semantic invariance of contrastive pairs and dynamically adapts as the model capability evolves through the training process. Specifically, RGCL first introduces decision boundary-aware adversarial perturbations to constrain the exploration space of contrastive augmented views, avoiding the decrease of task-specific information. Furthermore, to incorporate global user-user and item-item collaboration relationships for guiding on the generation of hard contrastive views, we propose an adversarial-contrastive learning objective to construct a relation-aware view-generator. Besides, considering that unsupervised GCL could potentially narrower margins between data points and the decision boundary, resulting in decreased model robustness, we introduce the adversarial examples based on maximum perturbations to achieve margin maximization. We also provide theoretical analyses on the effectiveness of our designs. Through extensive experiments on five public datasets, we demonstrate the superiority of RGCL compared against twelve baseline models.

Large-eddy simulation of hydrodynamic noise from turbulent flows past an axisymmetric hull using high-order schemes

In this paper, wall-modeled large-eddy simulation (WMLES) is carried out with Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) acoustic analogy to investigate the turbulent flow and hydrodynamic noise of an axisymmetric body of revolution. We first develop the numerical model based on high-order schemes and validate it by benchmark test of the turbulent flow around a circular cylinder at Re=10000. It demonstrates the capability of the present scheme to capture the primary flow patterns and the acoustic noise in the far field. Then, we conduct the numerical simulation for the turbulent flows around the DARPA SUBOFF without appendages at the Reynolds number of Re=1.2*10^7. The numerical results such as pressure coefficients and velocity fluctuations, are accurately predicted by the present model, which shows closer agreement with the experimental data than available WMLES solutions in the literature. For the parallel midbody of the hull, the wall pressure fluctuation reveals a low-frequency broadband spectrum with the majority of signal energy. The surface fluctuating pressure spectrum scales to the power of Strouhal number at the different locations, which is consistent with those in the turbulent boundary layer of the plate flows and airfoils. Moreover, the acoustic signature in the far field is investigated where the lowest sound pressure level (SPL) occurs in the upstream and downstream directions while the highest is found in the mid-parallel plane. SPLs are relatively close in the region of high acoustic pressure at the transverse plane of x/D=0, which exhibits a maximum difference of 1.2 dB between locations at different angles. In the vertical plane at z/D=0, the directivity plot reveals a symmetrical dipole pattern with vertical fluctuations stronger than the streamwise fluctuations.

Multi-Epoch learning with Data Augmentation for Deep Click-Through Rate Prediction

This paper investigates the one-epoch overfitting phenomenon in Click-Through Rate (CTR) models, where performance notably declines at the start of the second epoch. Despite extensive research, the efficacy of multi-epoch training over the conventional one-epoch approach remains unclear. We identify the overfitting of the embedding layer, caused by high-dimensional data sparsity, as the primary issue. To address this, we introduce a novel and simple Multi-Epoch learning with Data Augmentation (MEDA) framework, suitable for both non-continual and continual learning scenarios, which can be seamlessly integrated into existing deep CTR models and may have potential applications to handle the "forgetting or overfitting" dilemma in the retraining and the well-known catastrophic forgetting problems. MEDA minimizes overfitting by reducing the dependency of the embedding layer on subsequent training data or the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) layers, and achieves data augmentation through training the MLP with varied embedding spaces. Our findings confirm that pre-trained MLP layers can adapt to new embedding spaces, enhancing performance without overfitting. This adaptability underscores the MLP layers' role in learning a matching function focused on the relative relationships among embeddings rather than their absolute positions. To our knowledge, MEDA represents the first multi-epoch training strategy tailored for deep CTR prediction models. We conduct extensive experiments on several public and business datasets, and the effectiveness of data augmentation and superiority over conventional single-epoch training are fully demonstrated. Besides, MEDA has exhibited significant benefits in a real-world online advertising system.

Future Impact Decomposition in Request-level Recommendations

In recommender systems, reinforcement learning solutions have shown promising results in optimizing the interaction sequence between users and the system over the long-term performance. For practical reasons, the policy's actions are typically designed as recommending a list of items to handle users' frequent and continuous browsing requests more efficiently. In this list-wise recommendation scenario, the user state is updated upon every request in the corresponding MDP formulation. However, this request-level formulation is essentially inconsistent with the user's item-level behavior. In this study, we demonstrate that an item-level optimization approach can better utilize item characteristics and optimize the policy's performance even under the request-level MDP. We support this claim by comparing the performance of standard request-level methods with the proposed item-level actor-critic framework in both simulation and online experiments. Furthermore, we show that a reward-based future decomposition strategy can better express the item-wise future impact and improve the recommendation accuracy in the long term. To achieve a more thorough understanding of the decomposition strategy, we propose a model-based re-weighting framework with adversarial learning that further boost the performance and investigate its correlation with the reward-based strategy.

FASHI: A search for extragalactic OH megamasers with FAST

The FAST All Sky HI survey (FASHI) is broader in frequency band and sky volume, and deeper in detection sensitivity than the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey (ALFALFA). To efficiently expand the sample of OH megamasers (OHMs), whose strongest line has a rest frequency of 1667.35903 MHz, we directly matched the IRAS Point Source Catalog Redshift (PSCz) catalog with the corresponding FASHI data cube. From 145 PSCz sources already covered by FASHI, we obtained 27 OHMs with a detection rate of 18.6%, including 9 previously known and 18 new ones, within a redshift range of $0.14314\lesssim z_{\rm OH} \lesssim0.27656$. We also measured the hyperfine ratio of nine OHMs between the 1667 and 1665 MHz lines. The ratio ranges from 1.32 to 15.22, with an average of $R_{1667:1665}=4.74$. In a fit to the $L_{\rm OH}$ vs. $L_{\rm FIR}$ relation, we have ${\rm log}L_{\rm OH}= (1.57\pm0.10){\rm log}L_{\rm FIR}-(15.80\pm1.19)$, which is almost the same as derived from previous observations. As expected, since the OHM sample was selected by cross-correlation with the IRAS-selected PSCz, our detected OHMs are [ultra]luminous infrared galaxies ([U]LIRGs). However, not all [U]LIRGs have detectable OH emission, suggesting that the OH emission may be triggered within a specific stage of the merger or can only be seen in specific orientations. In general, FAST, with its 19-beam array and UWB receiver, will be a powerful tool for observing more OHMs and unraveling their mystery in the future.

IFA: Interaction Fidelity Attention for Entire Lifelong Behaviour Sequence Modeling

The lifelong user behavior sequence provides abundant information of user preference and gains impressive improvement in the recommendation task, however increases computational consumption significantly. To meet the severe latency requirement in online service, a short sub-sequence is sampled based on similarity to the target item. Unfortunately, items not in the sub-sequence are abandoned, leading to serious information loss. In this paper, we propose a new efficient paradigm to model the full lifelong sequence, which is named as \textbf{I}nteraction \textbf{F}idelity \textbf{A}ttention (\textbf{IFA}). In IFA, we input all target items in the candidate set into the model at once, and leverage linear transformer to reduce the time complexity of the cross attention between the candidate set and the sequence without any interaction information loss. We also additionally model the relationship of all target items for optimal set generation, and design loss function for better consistency of training and inference. We demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our model by off-line and online experiments in the recommender system of Kuaishou.

Sequential Recommendation for Optimizing Both Immediate Feedback and Long-term Retention

In the landscape of Recommender System (RS) applications, reinforcement learning (RL) has recently emerged as a powerful tool, primarily due to its proficiency in optimizing long-term rewards. Nevertheless, it suffers from instability in the learning process, stemming from the intricate interactions among bootstrapping, off-policy training, and function approximation. Moreover, in multi-reward recommendation scenarios, designing a proper reward setting that reconciles the inner dynamics of various tasks is quite intricate. In response to these challenges, we introduce DT4IER, an advanced decision transformer-based recommendation model that is engineered to not only elevate the effectiveness of recommendations but also to achieve a harmonious balance between immediate user engagement and long-term retention. The DT4IER applies an innovative multi-reward design that adeptly balances short and long-term rewards with user-specific attributes, which serve to enhance the contextual richness of the reward sequence ensuring a more informed and personalized recommendation process. To enhance its predictive capabilities, DT4IER incorporates a high-dimensional encoder, skillfully designed to identify and leverage the intricate interrelations across diverse tasks. Furthermore, we integrate a contrastive learning approach within the action embedding predictions, a strategy that significantly boosts the model's overall performance. Experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of DT4IER against state-of-the-art Sequential Recommender Systems (SRSs) and Multi-Task Learning (MTL) models in terms of both prediction accuracy and effectiveness in specific tasks. Modeling User Retention through Generative Flow Networks

Recommender systems aim to fulfill the user's daily demands. While most existing research focuses on maximizing the user's engagement with the system, it has recently been pointed out that how frequently the users come back for the service also reflects the quality and stability of recommendations. However, optimizing this user retention behavior is non-trivial and poses several challenges including the intractable leave-and-return user activities, the sparse and delayed signal, and the uncertain relations between users' retention and their immediate feedback towards each item in the recommendation list. In this work, we regard the retention signal as an overall estimation of the user's end-of-session satisfaction and propose to estimate this signal through a probabilistic flow. This flow-based modeling technique can back-propagate the retention reward towards each recommended item in the user session, and we show that the flow combined with traditional learning-to-rank objectives eventually optimizes a non-discounted cumulative reward for both immediate user feedback and user retention. We verify the effectiveness of our method through both offline empirical studies on two public datasets and online A/B tests in an industrial platform.
