Evidence for the Formation of Quasi-Bound-State in an Asymmetrical Quantum Point Contact

Features below the first conductance plateau in ballistic quantum point contacts (QPCs) are often ascribed to electron interaction and spin effects within the single mode limit. In QPCs with a highly asymmetric geometry, we observe sharp resonance peaks when the point contacts are gated to the single mode regime, and surprisingly, under certain gating conditions, a complete destruction of the 2e^2/h, first quantum plateau. The temperature evolution of the resonances suggest non-Fermi liquid behavior, while the overall nonlinear characterizations reveal features reminiscent of the 0.7 effect. We attribute these unusual behaviors to the formation of a quasi bound state, which is stabilized by a momentum-mismatch accentuated by asymmetry.

Single Phase Slip Limited Switching Current in 1-Dimensional Superconducting Al Nanowires

An Aluminum nanowire switches from superconducting to normal as the current is increased in an upsweep. The switching current (I_s) averaged over upsweeps approximately follows the depairing critical current (I_c) but falls below it. Fluctuations in I_s exhibit three distinct regions of behaviors and are non-monotonic in temperature: saturation well below the critical temperature T_c, an increase as T^{2/3} at intermediate temperatures, and a rapid decrease close to T_c. Heat dissipation analysis indicates that a single phase slip is able to trigger switching at low and intermediate temperatures, whereby the T^{2/3} dependence arises from the thermal activation of a phase slip, while saturation at low temperatures provides striking evidence that the phase slips by macroscopic quantum tunneling.

Retrapping Current, Self-Heating, and Hysteretic Current-Voltage Curves in Ultra-Narrow Superconducting Aluminum Nanowires

Hysteretic I-V (current-voltage) is studied in narrow Al nanowires. The nanowires have a cross section as small as 50 nm^2. We focus on the retapping current in a down-sweep of the current, at which a nanowire re-enters the superconducting state from a normal state. The retrapping current is found to be significantly smaller than the switching current at which the nanowire switches into the normal state from a superconducting state during a current up-sweep. For wires of different lengths, we analyze the heat removal due to various processes, including electronic and phonon processes. For a short wires 1.5 um in length, electronic thermal conduction is effective; for longer wires 10um in length, phonon conduction becomes important. We demonstrate that the measured retrapping current as a function of temperature can be quantitatively accounted for by the selfheating occurring in the normal portions of the nanowires to better than 20 % accuracy. For the phonon processes, the extracted thermal conduction parameters support the notion of a reduced phase-space below 3-dimensions, consistent with the phonon thermal wavelength having exceeded the lateral dimensions at temperatures below ~ 1.3K. Nevertheless, surprisingly the best fit was achieved with a functional form corresponding to 3-dimensional phonons, albeit requiring parameters far exceeding known values in the literature.

Slowly rotating charged black holes in anti-de Sitter third order Lovelock gravity

In this paper, we study slowly rotating black hole solutions in Lovelock gravity (n=3). These exact slowly rotating black hole solutions are obtained in uncharged and charged cases, respectively. Up to the linear order of the rotating parameter a, the mass, Hawking temperature and entropy of the uncharged black holes get no corrections from rotation. In charged case, we compute magnetic dipole moment and gyromagnetic ratio of the black holes. It is shown that the gyromagnetic ratio keeps invariant after introducing the Gauss-Bonnet and third order Lovelock interactions.

Thermodynamics of Gauss-Bonnet-Born-Infeld black holes in AdS space

We construct solutions of a model which includes the Gauss-Bonnet and Born-Infeld terms for various horizon topologies $(k=0, \pm 1)$, and then the mass, temperature, entropy and heat capacity of black holes are computed. For the sake of simplicity, we perform the stability analysis of five dimensional topological black holes in AdS space.

Bivariate Quasi-Tower Sets and Their Associated Lagrange Interpolation Bases

As we all known, there is still a long way for us to solve arbitrary multivariate Lagrange interpolation in theory. Nevertheless, it is well accepted that theories about Lagrange interpolation on special point sets should cast important lights on the general solution. In this paper, we propose a new type of bivariate point sets, quasi-tower sets, whose geometry is more natural than some known point sets such as cartesian sets and tower sets. For bivariate Lagrange interpolation on quasi-tower sets, we construct the associated degree reducing interpolation monomial and Newton bases w.r.t. common monomial orderings theoretically. Moreover, by inputting these bases into Buchberger-Möller algorithm, we obtain the reduced Gröbner bases for vanishing ideals of quasi-tower sets much more efficiently than before.

Incommensurate Phase of a Triangular Frustrated Heisenberg Model Studied via Schwinger-Boson Mean-Field Theory

We study a triangular frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor interaction $J_{1}$ and third-nearest-neighbor interactions $J_{3}$ by means of Schwinger-boson mean-field theory. It is shown that an incommensurate phase exists in a finite region in the parameter space for an antiferromagnetic $J_{3}$ while $J_{1}$ can be either positive or negtaive. A detailed solution is presented to disclose the main features of this incommensurate phase. A gapless dispersion of quasiparticles leads to the intrinsic $T^{2}$-law of specific heat. The local magnetization is significantly reduced by quantum fluctuations (for S=1 case, a local magnetization is estimated as $m= \approx0.6223$). The magnetic susceptibility is linear in temperature at low temperatures. We address possible relevance of these results to the low-temperature properties of NiGa$_{2}$S$_{4}$. From a careful analysis of the incommensurate spin wave vector, the interaction parameters for NiGa$_{2}% $S$_{4}$ are estimated as, $J_{1}\approx-3.8755$K and $J_{3}\approx14.0628$K, in order to account for the experimental data.

Division of the two-qubit Hilbert space according to the entanglement sudden death under composite noise environment

We show theoretically that according to the disentanglement behavior under composite noise environment, the Hilbert space of a two-qubit system can be divided into two separate parts: a 3-dimensional subspace in which all states disentangle asymptotically, and the rest in which all states disentangle abruptly. The violation of additivity for entanglement decay rates under weak noises [see, PRL 97, 140403 (2006)] therefore can be explained in terms of such division of the Hilbert space.

Coherent population trapping in a dressed two-level atom via a bichromatic field

We show theoretically that by applying a bichromatic electromagnetic field, the dressed states of a monochromatically driven two-level atom can be pumped into a coherent superposition termed as dressed-state coherent population trapping. Such effect can be viewed as a new doorknob to manipulate a two-level system via its control over dressed-state populations. Application of this effect in the precision measurement of Rabi frequency, the unexpected population inversion and lasing without inversion are discussed to demonstrate such controllability.

The Kagome Antiferromagnet: A Schwinger-Boson Mean-Field Theory Study

The Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Kagomé lattice is studied in the framework of Schwinger-boson mean-field theory. Two solutions with different symmetries are presented. One solution gives a conventional quantum state with $\mathbf{q}=0$ order for all spin values. Another gives a gapped spin liquid state for spin $S=1/2$ and a mixed state with both $\mathbf{q}=0$ and $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$ orders for spin $S>1/2$. We emphasize that the mixed state exhibits two sets of peaks in the static spin structure factor. And for the case of spin $S=1/2$, the gap value we obtained is consistent with the previous numerical calculations by other means. We also discuss the thermodynamic quantities such as the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures and show that our result is in a good agreement with the Mermin-Wagner theorem.

Modeling Interconnect Variability Using Efficient Parametric Model Order Reduction

Assessing IC manufacturing process fluctuations and their impacts on IC interconnect performance has become unavoidable for modern DSM designs. However, the construction of parametric interconnect models is often hampered by the rapid increase in computational cost and model complexity. In this paper we present an efficient yet accurate parametric model order reduction algorithm for addressing the variability of IC interconnect performance. The efficiency of the approach lies in a novel combination of low-rank matrix approximation and multi-parameter moment matching. The complexity of the proposed parametric model order reduction is as low as that of a standard Krylov subspace method when applied to a nominal system. Under the projection-based framework, our algorithm also preserves the passivity of the resulting parametric models.

Specification Test Compaction for Analog Circuits and MEMS

Testing a non-digital integrated system against all of its specifications can be quite expensive due to the elaborate test application and measurement setup required. We propose to eliminate redundant tests by employing e-SVM based statistical learning. Application of the proposed methodology to an operational amplifier and a MEMS accelerometer reveal that redundant tests can be statistically identified from a complete set of specification-based tests with negligible error. Specifically, after eliminating five of eleven specification-based tests for an operational amplifier, the defect escape and yield loss is small at 0.6% and 0.9%, respectively. For the accelerometer, defect escape of 0.2% and yield loss of 0.1% occurs when the hot and colt tests are eliminated. For the accelerometer, this level of Compaction would reduce test cost by more than half.

The SU(3) bosons and the spin nematic state on the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic triangular lattice

A bond-operator mean-field theory in the SU(3) bosons representation is developed to describe the antiferro-nematic phase of the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic model. The calculated static structure factors reveal delicately that the antiferro-nematic state may exhibit both the ferro- and antiferro-quadruple long-range orders, which is reminiscent of the ferrimagnets or the canted antiferromagnets. This result may influence the spin wave theory concerned with this phase. Possible relevance of this unconventional state to the quasi-two-dimensional triangular material NiGa2S4 is addressed.

Spin and orbital valence bond solids in a one-dimensional spin-orbital system: Schwinger boson mean field theory

A generalized one-dimensional $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ spin-orbital model is studied by Schwinger boson mean-field theory (SBMFT). We explore mainly the dimer phases and clarify how to capture properly the low temperature properties of such a system by SBMFT. The phase diagrams are exemplified. The three dimer phases, orbital valence bond solid (OVB) state, spin valence bond solid (SVB) state and spin-orbital valence bond solid (SOVB) state, are found to be favored in respectively proper parameter regions, and they can be characterized by the static spin and pseudospin susceptibilities calculated in SBMFT scheme. The result reveals that the spin-orbit coupling of $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ type serves as both the spin-Peierls and orbital-Peierles mechanisms that responsible for the spin-singlet and orbital-singlet formations respectively.

Contractor renormalization group theory of the SU($N$) chains and ladders

Contractor renormalization group (CORE) method is applied to the SU($N$) chain and ladders in this paper. In our designed schemes, we show that these two classes of systems can return to their original form of Hamiltonian after CORE transformation. Successive iteration of the transformation leads to a fixed point so that the ground state energy and the energy gap to the ground state can be deduced. The result of SU($N$) chain is compared with the one by Bethe ansatz method. The transformation on spin-1/2 ladders gives a finite gap in the excited energy spectra to the ground state in an intuitive way. The application to SU(3) ladders is also discussed.

Two-dimensional gapless spin liquids in frustrated SU(N) quantum magnets

A class of the symmetrically frustrated SU(N) models is constructed for quantum magnets based on the generators of SU(N) group. The total Hamiltonian lacks SU(N) symmtry. A mean field theory in the quasi-particle representation is developed for spin liquid states. Numerical solutions in two dimension indicate that the ground states are gapless and the quasi-particles are Dirac particles. The mechanism may be helpful in exploring the spin liquid phases in the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic model and the spin-orbital model in higher dimensions.

Green's Function of 3-D Helmholtz Equation for Turbulent Medium: Application to Optics

The fundamental problem of optical wave propagation is the determination of the field at an observation point, given a disturbance specified over some finite aperture. In both vacuum and inhomogeneous media, the solution of this problem is given approximately by the superposition integral, which is a mathematical expression of the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle. In doing so, it is important to find the atmospheric impulse response (Green's function). Within a limited but useful region of validity, a satisfactory optical propagation theory for the earth's clear turbulent atmosphere could be developed by using Rytov's method to approximate the Helmholtz equation. In particular, we deal with two optical problems which are the time reversal and apodization problems. The background and consequences of these results for optical communication through the atmosphere are briefly discussed.
