An objective comparison of methods for augmented reality in laparoscopic liver resection by preoperative-to-intraoperative image fusion

Augmented reality for laparoscopic liver resection is a visualisation mode that allows a surgeon to localise tumours and vessels embedded within the liver by projecting them on top of a laparoscopic image. Preoperative 3D models extracted from CT or MRI data are registered to the intraoperative laparoscopic images during this process. In terms of 3D-2D fusion, most of the algorithms make use of anatomical landmarks to guide registration. These landmarks include the liver's inferior ridge, the falciform ligament, and the occluding contours. They are usually marked by hand in both the laparoscopic image and the 3D model, which is time-consuming and may contain errors if done by a non-experienced user. Therefore, there is a need to automate this process so that augmented reality can be used effectively in the operating room. We present the Preoperative-to-Intraoperative Laparoscopic Fusion Challenge (P2ILF), held during the Medical Imaging and Computer Assisted Interventions (MICCAI 2022) conference, which investigates the possibilities of detecting these landmarks automatically and using them in registration. The challenge was divided into two tasks: 1) A 2D and 3D landmark detection task and 2) a 3D-2D registration task. The teams were provided with training data consisting of 167 laparoscopic images and 9 preoperative 3D models from 9 patients, with the corresponding 2D and 3D landmark annotations. A total of 6 teams from 4 countries participated, whose proposed methods were evaluated on 16 images and two preoperative 3D models from two patients. All the teams proposed deep learning-based methods for the 2D and 3D landmark segmentation tasks and differentiable rendering-based methods for the registration task. Based on the experimental outcomes, we propose three key hypotheses that determine current limitations and future directions for research in this domain.

Joint Beamforming and Offloading Design for Integrated Sensing, Communication and Computation System

Mobile edge computing (MEC) is powerful to alleviate the heavy computing tasks in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. In this paper, we investigate joint beamforming and offloading design in a three-tier integrated sensing, communication and computation (ISCC) framework comprising one cloud server, multiple mobile edge servers, and multiple terminals. While executing sensing tasks, the user terminals can optionally offload sensing data to either MEC server or cloud servers. To minimize the execution latency, we jointly optimize the transmit beamforming matrices and offloading decision variables under the constraint of sensing performance. An alternating optimization algorithm based on multidimensional fractional programming is proposed to tackle the non-convex problem. Simulation results demonstrates the superiority of the proposed mechanism in terms of convergence and task execution latency reduction, compared with the state-of-the-art two-tier ISCC framework.

Joint Transmitter Design for Robust Secure Radar-Communication Coexistence Systems

This paper investigates the spectrum sharing between a multiple-input single-output (MISO) secure communication system and a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar system in the presence of one suspicious eavesdropper. We jointly design the radar waveform and communication beamforming vector at the two systems, such that the interference between the base station (BS) and radar is reduced, and the detrimental radar interference to the communication system is enhanced to jam the eavesdropper, thereby increasing secure information transmission performance. In particular, by considering the imperfect channel state information (CSI) for the user and eavesdropper, we maximize the worst-case secrecy rate at the user, while ensuring the detection performance of radar system. To tackle this challenging problem, we propose a two-layer robust cooperative algorithm based on the S-lemma and semidefinite relaxation techniques. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves significant secrecy rate gains over the non-robust scheme. Furthermore, we illustrate the trade-off between secrecy rate and detection probability.

Diffusion-based Pose Refinement and Muti-hypothesis Generation for 3D Human Pose Estimaiton

Previous probabilistic models for 3D Human Pose Estimation (3DHPE) aimed to enhance pose accuracy by generating multiple hypotheses. However, most of the hypotheses generated deviate substantially from the true pose. Compared to deterministic models, the excessive uncertainty in probabilistic models leads to weaker performance in single-hypothesis prediction. To address these two challenges, we propose a diffusion-based refinement framework called DRPose, which refines the output of deterministic models by reverse diffusion and achieves more suitable multi-hypothesis prediction for the current pose benchmark by multi-step refinement with multiple noises. To this end, we propose a Scalable Graph Convolution Transformer (SGCT) and a Pose Refinement Module (PRM) for denoising and refining. Extensive experiments on Human3.6M and MPI-INF-3DHP datasets demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on both single and multi-hypothesis 3DHPE. Code is available at https://github.com/KHB1698/DRPose.

Black holes with scalar hair: Extending from and beyond the Schwarzschild solution

We construct novel scalarized black hole (BH) solutions beyond the general relativity (GR) framework. These scalarized BH solutions are extended from the Schwarzschild one and the non-Schwarzschild one in the pure Einstein-Weyl gravity. By studying the BH entropy and free energy, we demonstrate that the scalarized BH extending from the Schwarzschild one exhibits thermodynamically preferred. We obtain these novel solutions by directly solving the full fourth-order equations of motion. This narrows the problematic solution space obtained by commonly adopted second-order reduction to physically valid spaces. Our findings also unveil the evasion of the no-hair theorem within the realm of higher-derivative gravity.

Relaxation dynamics in the alternating XY chain following a quantum quench

We investigate the relaxation dynamics of the fermion two-point correlation function $C_{mn}(t)=\langleψ(t)|c_{m}^†c_{n}|ψ(t)\rangle$ in the XY chain with staggered nearest-neighbor hopping interaction after a quench. We find that the deviation $δC_{mn}(t)=C_{mn}(t)-C_{mn}(\infty)$ decays with time following the power law behavior $t^{-μ}$, where the exponent $μ$ depends on whether the quench is to the commensurate phase ($μ=1$) and incommensurate phase ($μ=\frac{1}{2}$). This decay of $δC_{mn}(t)$ arises from the transient behavior of the double excited quasiparticle occupations and the transitions between different excitation spectra. Furthermore, we find that the steady value $C_{mn}(\infty)$, which is different from the ground state expectation value, only involves the average fermion occupation numbers (i.e. the average excited single particle). We also observe nonanalytic singularities in the steady value $C_{mn}(\infty)$ for the quench to the critical points of the quantum phase transitions (QPTs), suggesting its potential use as a signature of QPTs.

Sensing Aided Covert Communications: Turning Interference into Allies

In this paper, we investigate the realization of covert communication in a general radar-communication cooperation system, which includes integrated sensing and communications as a special example. We explore the possibility of utilizing the sensing ability of radar to track and jam the aerial adversary target attempting to detect the transmission. Based on the echoes from the target, the extended Kalman filtering technique is employed to predict its trajectory as well as the corresponding channels. Depending on the maneuvering altitude of adversary target, two channel state information (CSI) models are considered, with the aim of maximizing the covert transmission rate by jointly designing the radar waveform and communication transmit beamforming vector based on the constructed channels. For perfect CSI under the free-space propagation model, by decoupling the joint design, we propose an efficient algorithm to guarantee that the target cannot detect the transmission. For imperfect CSI due to the multi-path components, a robust joint transmission scheme is proposed based on the property of the Kullback-Leibler divergence. The convergence behaviour, tracking MSE, false alarm and missed detection probabilities, and covert transmission rate are evaluated. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms achieve accurate tracking. For both channel models, the proposed sensing-assisted covert transmission design is able to guarantee the covertness, and significantly outperforms the conventional schemes.

Bundle-based similarity measurement for positive semidefinite matrices

Positive semidefinite (PSD) matrices are indispensable in many fields of science. A similarity measurement for such matrices is usually an essential ingredient in the mathematical modelling of a scientific problem. This paper proposes a unified framework to construct similarity measurements for PSD matrices. The framework is obtained by exploring the fiber bundle structure of the cone of PSD matrices and generalizing the idea of the point-set distance previously developed for linear subsapces and positive definite (PD) matrices. The framework demonstrates both theoretical advantages and computational convenience: (1) We prove that the similarity measurement constructed by the framework can be recognized either as the cost of a parallel transport or as the length of a quasi-geodesic curve. (2) We extend commonly used divergences for equidimensional PD matrices to the non-equidimensional case. Examples include Kullback-Leibler divergence, Bhattacharyya divergence and Rényi divergence. We prove that these extensions enjoy the same consistency property as their counterpart for geodesic distance. (3) We apply our geometric framework to further extend those in (2) to similarity measurements for arbitrary PSD matrices. We also provide simple formulae to compute these similarity measurements in most situations.

How to Evaluate the Generalization of Detection? A Benchmark for Comprehensive Open-Vocabulary Detection

Object detection (OD) in computer vision has made significant progress in recent years, transitioning from closed-set labels to open-vocabulary detection (OVD) based on large-scale vision-language pre-training (VLP). However, current evaluation methods and datasets are limited to testing generalization over object types and referral expressions, which do not provide a systematic, fine-grained, and accurate benchmark of OVD models' abilities. In this paper, we propose a new benchmark named OVDEval, which includes 9 sub-tasks and introduces evaluations on commonsense knowledge, attribute understanding, position understanding, object relation comprehension, and more. The dataset is meticulously created to provide hard negatives that challenge models' true understanding of visual and linguistic input. Additionally, we identify a problem with the popular Average Precision (AP) metric when benchmarking models on these fine-grained label datasets and propose a new metric called Non-Maximum Suppression Average Precision (NMS-AP) to address this issue. Extensive experimental results show that existing top OVD models all fail on the new tasks except for simple object types, demonstrating the value of the proposed dataset in pinpointing the weakness of current OVD models and guiding future research. Furthermore, the proposed NMS-AP metric is verified by experiments to provide a much more truthful evaluation of OVD models, whereas traditional AP metrics yield deceptive results. Lightweight high-resolution Subject Matting in the Real World

Existing saliency object detection (SOD) methods struggle to satisfy fast inference and accurate results simultaneously in high resolution scenes. They are limited by the quality of public datasets and efficient network modules for high-resolution images. To alleviate these issues, we propose to construct a saliency object matting dataset HRSOM and a lightweight network PSUNet. Considering efficient inference of mobile depolyment framework, we design a symmetric pixel shuffle module and a lightweight module TRSU. Compared to 13 SOD methods, the proposed PSUNet has the best objective performance on the high-resolution benchmark dataset. Evaluation results of objective assessment are superior compared to U$^2$Net that has 10 times of parameter amount of our network. On Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform, inference a single 640$\times$640 image only takes 113ms. And on the subjective assessment, evaluation results are better than the industry benchmark IOS16 (Lift subject from background).

Heavy-tailed distributions of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths in spatiotemporal space

This paper conducts a systematic statistical analysis of the characteristics of the geographical empirical distributions for the numbers of both cumulative and daily confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths at county, city, and state levels over a time span from January 2020 to June 2022. The mathematical heavy-tailed distributions can be used for fitting the empirical distributions observed in different temporal stages and geographical scales. The estimations of the shape parameter of the tail distributions using the Generalized Pareto Distribution also support the observations of the heavy-tailed distributions. According to the characteristics of the heavy-tailed distributions, the evolution course of the geographical empirical distributions can be divided into three distinct phases, namely the power-law phase, the lognormal phase I, and the lognormal phase II. These three phases could serve as an indicator of the severity degree of the COVID-19 pandemic within an area. The empirical results suggest important intrinsic dynamics of a human infectious virus spread in the human interconnected physical complex network. The findings extend previous empirical studies and could provide more strict constraints for current mathematical and physical modeling studies, such as the SIR model and its variants based on the theory of complex networks.

Precision measurement of the return distribution property of the Chinese stock market index

This paper systematically conducts an analysis of the composite index 1-min datasets over the 17-year period (2005-2021) for both the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges. To reveal the difference between the Chinese and the mature stock markets, here we precisely measure the property of return distribution of composite index over the time scale $Δt$ ranging from 1 min up to almost 4,000 min. The main findings are as follows. (1) Return distribution presents a leptokurtic, fat-tailed, and almost symmetrical shape, which is similar to that of mature markets. (2) The central part of return distribution is well described by the symmetrical Lévy $α$-stable process with a stability parameter comparable with the value of about 1.4 extracted in the U.S. stock market. (3) Return distribution can be well described by the student's t-distribution within a wider return range than the Lévy $α$-stable distribution. (4) Distinctively, the stability parameter shows a potential change when $Δt$ increases, and thus a crossover region at 15 $< Δt <$ 60 min is observed. This is different from the finding in the U.S. stock market where a single value of about 1.4 holds over 1 $\le Δt \le$ 1,000 min. (5) The tail distribution of returns at small $Δt$ decays as an asymptotic power-law with an exponent of about 3, which is a value widely existing in mature markets. However, it decays exponentially when $Δt \ge$ 240 min, which is not observed in mature markets. (6) Return distributions gradually converge to Gaussian as $Δt$ increases. This observation is different from the finding of a critical $Δt =$ 4 days in the U.S. stock market.

Peculiar properties in quasi-normal spectra from loop quantum gravity effect

We investigate the quasi-normal mode (QNM) spectra for scalar and electromagnetic fields over a covairant loop quantum gravity black hole (LQG-BH). For the fundamental modes, the LQG effect reduces the oscillations in the scalar field, however it induces stronger oscillations in the electromagnetic field, comparing to the classical case. Under the scalar field perturbation, the system enjoys faster decaying modes with more oscillations than the electromagnetic field. Some peculiar phenomena emerge in the QNM spectra with higher overtones. A notable feature is the substantial divergence observed in the first several overtones from their Schwarzschild counterparts, with this discrepancy magnifying as the overtone number increases. Another remarkable phenomenon in higher overtones is that the QNFs of the scalar field with $l=0$ exhibit an oscillatory behavior as the quantum parameter $r_0$ increases significantly. These oscillations intensify with the rising overtone number. We hypothesize that this oscillatory pattern may be associated with the extremal effect.

Diagnosing quantum phase transition via holographic entanglement entropy at finite temperature

We investigate the behavior of the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) in proximity to the quantum critical points (QCPs) of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axions (EMDA) model. Since both the metallic phase and the insulating phase are characterized by distinct IR geometries, we used to expect that the HEE itself characterizes the QCPs. This expectation is validated for certain cases, however, we make a noteworthy observation: for a specific scenario where $-1<γ\leq -1/3$, with $γ$ as a coupling parameter, it is not the HEE itself but rather the second-order derivative of HEE with respect to the lattice wave number that effectively characterizes quantum phase transitions (QPTs). This distinction arises due to the influence of thermal effects. These findings present novel insights into the interplay between HEE and QPTs in the context of the MIT, and have significant implications for studying QPTs at finite temperatures.

Mixed-State Entanglement and Transport in Einstein-Maxwell-Axion-Horndeski Theory

We present a comprehensive study exploring the relationship between transport properties and measures of quantum entanglement in the Einstein-Maxwell-Axion-Horndeski theory. By using holographic duality, we study the entanglement measures, holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and entanglement wedge cross-section (EWCS), and transport coefficients, for this model and analyze their dependence on free parameters which we classify into action parameter, observable parameters and axion factor. We find contrasting behaviors between HEE and EWCS with respect to observable parameters (charge and temperature), and the axion factor, indicating that they capture different types of quantum correlations. We also find that HEE exhibits positive correlation with both charge and thermal excitations, whereas EWCS exhibits a negative correlation with charge-related conductivities and thermal fluctuations. Furthermore, we find that the Horndenski coupling term, as the modification to standard gravity theory, does not change the qualitative behaviors of the conductivities and the entanglement measures.

Robust Visual Imitation Learning with Inverse Dynamics Representations

Imitation learning (IL) has achieved considerable success in solving complex sequential decision-making problems. However, current IL methods mainly assume that the environment for learning policies is the same as the environment for collecting expert datasets. Therefore, these methods may fail to work when there are slight differences between the learning and expert environments, especially for challenging problems with high-dimensional image observations. However, in real-world scenarios, it is rare to have the chance to collect expert trajectories precisely in the target learning environment. To address this challenge, we propose a novel robust imitation learning approach, where we develop an inverse dynamics state representation learning objective to align the expert environment and the learning environment. With the abstract state representation, we design an effective reward function, which thoroughly measures the similarity between behavior data and expert data not only element-wise, but also from the trajectory level. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the proposed approach under various visual perturbations and in diverse visual control tasks. Our approach can achieve a near-expert performance in most environments, and significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art visual IL methods and robust IL methods.

A Microgrid Trading Framework Based on PoC Consensus

In the field of energy Internet, blockchain-based distributed energy trading mode is a promising way to replace the traditional centralized trading mode. However, the current power blockchain platform based on public chain has problems such as low consensus efficiency and waste of computing resources. The energy trading platform based on the consortium chain has problems such as inability to attract users to join and collusion between alliances. We propose a microgrid trading framework based on proof of contribution (PoC). According to the contribution value, we randomly select nodes based on weights through verifiable random functions (VRF) in each round of consensus to form the next round of consensus committee. The proposed electricity trading framework not only improves the consensus efficiency of the blockchain, but also is suitable as an incentive mechanism to attract users to participate in the power blockchain. Experiments show that our framework is effective and the contribution value we designed is reasonable. Through our framework, we can motivate users to participate and make energy transactions more fair.
