Attosecond Interference Induced by Coulomb-Field-Driven Transverse Backward-Scattering Electron Wave-Packets

A novel and universal interference structure is found in the photoelectron momentum distribution of atoms in intense infrared laser field. Theoretical analysis shows that this structure can be attributed to a new form of Coulomb-field-driven backward-scattering of photoelectrons in the direction perpendicular to the laser field, in contrast to the conventional rescattering along the laser polarization direction. This transverse backward-scattering process is closely related to a family of photoelectrons initially ionized within a time interval of less than 200 attosecond around the crest of the laser electric field. Those electrons, acquiring near-zero return energy in the laser field, will be pulled back solely by the ionic Coulomb field and backscattered in the transverse direction. Moreover, this rescattering process mainly occurs at the first or the second return times, giving rise to different phases of the photoelectrons. The interference between these photoelectrons leads to unique curved interference fringes which are observable for most current intense field experiments, opening a new way to record the electron dynamics in atoms and molecules on a time scale much shorter than an optical cycle.

Observation of magneto-optical rotation effects in cold $^{87}$Rb atoms in an integrating sphere

We present a modified scheme for detection of the magneto-optical rotation (MOR) effect, where a linearly polarized laser field is interacting with cold $^{87}$Rb atoms in an integrating sphere. The rotation angle of the probe beam's polarization plane is detected in the experiment. The results indicate that the biased magnetic field, the probe light intensity and detuning, and the cold atoms' temperature are key parameters for the MOR effect. This scheme may improve the contrast of the rotation signal and provide an useful approach for high contrast cold atom clocks and magnetometers.

Sub-nanosecond time resolution detector based on APD for Synchrotron Radiation ultrafast experiments

Synchrotron radiation light sources produce intense beam of X-ray with ultra-short pulse and nanosecond period. This of-fers the opportunities for the time resolution experiments. Achieving higher counting rate and faster arriving time is diffi-cult for common detectors. But avalanche photodiodes (APD) based on silicon which have been commercially available1 with large active areas (e.g.10mmx10mm@ Perkin-Elmer Inc.) could satisfy the demands due to their good time resolution, low noise and large area.We investigate the high counting rate and nanosecond time resolution detector with APD. The detector's fast amplifier was designed with the gain of about 60dB (1000). The amplifier included with three stages RF-preamplifier using MAR6+ chip5 for the carefully controlling the circuit oscillation. Some measures have been taken for the preamplifiers good performance such as using resistance net between RF-preamplifier chip and the isolation of high voltage circuit from the preamplifier. The time resolution of the preamplifier together with APD sensor could reach below 1ns FWHM.

Evolution of Scientific Collaboration Network Driven by Homophily and Heterophily

Many scientific collaboration networks exhibit clear community and small world structures. However, the studies on the underlying mechanisms for the formation and evolution of community and small world structures are still insufficient. The mechanisms of homophily and heterophily based on scholars' traits are two important factors for the formation of community and inter-communal links, which may deserve further exploration. In this paper, a multi-agent model, which is based on combinatorial effects of homophily and heterophily, is developed to investigate the evolution of scientific collaboration networks. The simulation results indicate that agents with similar traits aggregate to form community by homophily, while heterophily plays a major role in the formation of inter-communal links. The pattern of network evolution revealed in simulations is essentially consistent with what is observed in empirical analyses, as in both cases the giant component evolves from a small cluster to a structure of chained-communities, and then to a small world network with community structure. This work may provides an alternative view on the underlying mechanisms for the formation of community and small world structures, complementary to the mainstream view that the small-world is generated from the combination of the structural embeddedness and structural holes mechanisms.

Building a doped Mott system by holography

We construct a holographic model in the framework of Q-lattices whose dual exhibits metal-insulator transitions. By introducing an interacting term between the Q-lattice and the electromagnetic field in bulk geometry, we find such kind of transition can be Mott-like. The evidences are presented as follows. i) The transition from a metallic phase to an insulating phase occurs when the lattice constant becomes larger. ii) A hard gap in the insulating phase can be manifestly observed in the optical conductivity. Nevertheless, in the zero temperature limit this model exhibits novel metallic behavior, featured by a gap as well as a zero-frequency mode with tiny spectral weight. It implies that our model is dual to a doped Mott system in one dimension where umklapp scattering is frozen at zero temperature. The similarity between this model and some organic linear chain conductors is briefly discussed.

A new scheme of compact cold atom clock based on diffuse laser cooling in a cylindrical cavity

We present a new scheme of compact Rubidium cold-atom clock which performs the diffuse light cooling, the microwave interrogation and the detection of the clock signal in a cylindrical microwave cavity. The diffuse light is produced by the reflection of the laser light at the inner surface of the microwave cavity. The pattern of injected laser beams is specially designed to make most of the cold atoms accumulate in the center of the microwave cavity. The microwave interrogation of cold atoms in the cavity leads to Ramsey fringes whose line-width is 24.5 Hz and the contrast of 95.6% when the free evolution time is 20 ms. The frequency stability of $7.3\times10^{-13}τ^{-1/2}$ has been achieved recently. The scheme of this physical package can largely reduce the complexity of the cold atom clock, and increase the performance of the clock.

Instantly Obsoleting the Address-code Associations: A New Principle for Defending Advanced Code Reuse Attack

Fine-grained Address Space Randomization has been considered as an effective protection against code reuse attacks such as ROP/JOP. However, it only employs a one-time randomization, and such a limitation has been exploited by recent just-in-time ROP and side channel ROP, which collect gadgets on-the-fly and dynamically compile them for malicious purposes. To defeat these advanced code reuse attacks, we propose a new defense principle: instantly obsoleting the address-code associations. We have initialized this principle with a novel technique called virtual space page table remapping and implemented the technique in a system CHAMELEON. CHAMELEON periodically re-randomizes the locations of code pages on-the-fly. A set of techniques are proposed to achieve our goal, including iterative instrumentation that instruments a to-be-protected binary program to generate a re-randomization compatible binary, runtime virtual page shuffling, and function reordering and instruction rearranging optimizations. We have tested CHAMELEON with over a hundred binary programs. Our experiments show that CHAMELEON can defeat all of our tested exploits by both preventing the exploit from gathering sufficient gadgets, and blocking the gadgets execution. Regarding the interval of our re-randomization, it is a parameter and can be set as short as 100ms, 10ms or 1ms. The experiment results show that CHAMELEON introduces on average 11.1%, 12.1% and 12.9% performance overhead for these parameters, respectively.

Extremes of stationary Gasussian storage models

For the stationary storage process $\{Q(t), t\ge0\}$, with $ Q(t)=\sup_{ s \ge t}\left(X(s)-X(t)-c(s-t)^β\right), $ where $\{X(t),t\ge 0\}$ is a centered Gaussian process with stationary increments, $c>0$ and $β>0$ is chosen such that $Q(t)$ is finite a.s., we derive exact asymptotics of $\mathbb{P}\left(\sup_{t\in [0,T_u]} Q(t)>u\right)$ and $\mathbb{P}\left(\inf_{t\in [0,T_u]} Q(t)>u\right)$, as $u\rightarrow\infty$. As a by-product we find conditions under which strong Piterbarg property holds.

Noncoherent Relaying in Energy Harvesting Communication Systems

In energy harvesting (EH) relay networks, the coherent communication requires accurate estima- tion/tracking of the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) which consumes extra power. As a remedy, we propose two noncoherent EH relaying protocols based on the amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying, namely, power splitting noncoherent AF (PS-NcAF) and time switching noncoherent AF (TS-NcAF), which do not require any instantaneous CSI. We develop a noncoherent framework of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), embracing PS-NcAF and TS-NcAF in a unified form. For arbitrary M-ary noncoherent frequency-shift keying (FSK) and differential phase- shift keying (DPSK), we derive maximum-likelihood detectors (MLDs) for PS-NcAF and TS-NcAF in a unified form, which involves integral evaluations yet serves as the optimum performance benchmark. To avoid expensive integral computations, we propose a closed-form detector using the Gauss-Legendre approximation, which achieves almost identical performance as the MLD but at substantially lower complexity. These EH-based noncoherent detectors achieve full diversity in Rayleigh fading. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed PS-NcAF and TS-NcAF may outperform the conventional grid- powered relay system under the same total power constraint. Various insights which are useful for the design of practical SWIPT relaying systems are obtained. Interestingly, PS-NcAF outperforms TS-NcAF in the single-relay case, whereas TS-NcAF outperforms PS-NcAF in the multi-relay case.

Energy Harvesting Noncoherent Cooperative Communications

This paper investigates simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in energy harvesting (EH) relay systems. Unlike existing SWIPT schemes requiring the channel state information (CSI) for coherent information delivery, we propose a noncoherent SWIPT framework for decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems bypassing the need for CSI and consequently saving energy in the network. The proposed SWIPT framework embraces power-splitting noncoherent DF (PS-NcDF) and time-switching noncoherent DF (TS-NcDF) in a unified form, and supports arbitrary M-ary noncoherent frequency-shift keying (FSK) and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK). Exact (noncoherent) maximum-likelihood detectors (MLDs) for PS-NcDF and TS-NcDF are developed in a unified form, which involves integral evaluations yet serves as the optimum performance benchmark for noncoherent SWIPT. To reduce the computational cost of the exact MLDs, we also propose closed-form approximate MLDs achieving near-optimum performance, thus serving as a practical solution for noncoherent SWIPT. Numerical results demonstrate a performance tradeoff between the first and second hops through the adjustment of time switching or power splitting parameters, whose optimal values minimizing the symbol-error rate (SER) are strictly between 0 and 1. We demonstrate that M-FSK results in a significant energy saving over M-DPSK for M >= 8; thus M-FSK may be more suitable for EH relay systems.

Study of Silicon Pixel Sensors for Synchrotron Radiation Detection

Hybrid pixel single-photon-counting detectors have been successfully employed and widely used in Synchrotron radiation X-ray detection. In this paper, the silicon pixel sensors for single X-ray photon detection, which operate in full-depletion mode have been studied. The pixel sensors were fabricated on 4-inch, N type, 320μm thick, high-resistivity silicon wafers. The pixel sensors has a p+-in-n structure with varies of pixel size and gap size including guard-ring structures. Later, the pixel sensor was wire bonded to the ASIC circuits and tested for the performance of X-ray response in the synchrotron beam line (BSRF, 1W2B). From the S-curve scan, we could get the energy resolution and the linear properties between input energy and the equivalent generator amplitude. The pixel sensors we fabricated have a good energy linear and high count rate depending on the ASIC readout circuit. We get the 20% energy resolution above 10 keV photon energy via wire bonding. The energy resolution would get better if we bond the sensor via indium ball for the smaller stray capacitance.

Extremes of Chi-square Processes with Trend

This paper studies the supremum of a chi-square process with trend over a threshold-dependent-time horizon. Under the assumption that the chi-square process is generated from a centered self-similar Gaussian process and the trend function is modeled by a polynomial function, we obtain the exact tail asymptotics of the supremum of the chi-square process with trend. These results are of interest in applications in engineering, insurance, queueing and statistics, etc. Some possible extensions of our results are also discussed.

Holographic Superconductor on Q-lattice

We construct the simplest gravitational dual model of a superconductor on Q-lattices. We analyze the condition for the existence of a critical temperature at which the charged scalar field will condense. In contrast to the holographic superconductor on ionic lattices, the presence of Q-lattices will suppress the condensate of the scalar field and lower the critical temperature. In particular, when the Q-lattice background is dual to a deep insulating phase, the condensation would never occur for some small charges. Furthermore, we numerically compute the optical conductivity in the superconducting regime. It turns out that the presence of Q-lattice does not remove the pole in the imaginary part of the conductivity, ensuring the appearance of a delta function in the real part. We also evaluate the gap which in general depends on the charge of the scalar field as well as the Q-lattice parameters. Nevertheless, when the charge of the scalar field is relatively large and approaches the probe limit, the gap becomes universal with $ω_g \simeq 9T_c$ which is consistent with the result for conventional holographic superconductors.

Holographic fermionic system with dipole coupling on Q-lattice

We construct a holographic model for a fermionic system on Q-lattice and compute the spectral function in the presence of a dipole coupling. Both key features of doped Mott insulators, the dynamical generation of a gap and spectral weight transfer, are observed when adjusting the value of the coupling parameter $p$. Of particular interest is that when the background is in a deep insulating phase, the Mott gap opens much easier with a smaller coupling parameter in comparison with a metallic background. The effects of lattice parameters on the width of the gap $Δ/μ$ are studied and a turning point is observed near the critical regime of metal-insulator transitions of the background. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the spectral function is studied. Finally, we also observe that the anisotropic Q-lattice generates anisotropic peaks with different magnitudes, indicating that insulating and metallic phases arise in different directions.

HOMFLY polynomial from a generalized Yang-Yang function

Starting from the free field realization of Kac-Moody Lie algebra, we define a generalized Yang-Yang function. Then for the Lie algebra of type $A_{n}$, we derive braiding and fusion matrix by braiding the thimble from the generalized Yang-Yang function. One can construct a knots invariant $H(K)$ from the braiding and fusion matrix. It is an isotropy invariant and obeys a skein relation. From them, we show that the corresponding knots invariant is HOMFLY polynomial.

On the gamma-reflected processes with fBm input

Define a $γ$-reflected process $W_γ(t)=Y_H(t)-γ\inf_{s\in[0,t]}Y_H(s)$, $t\ge0$ with input process $\{Y_H(t), t\ge 0\}$ which is a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in (0,1)$ and a negative linear trend. In risk theory $R_γ(t)=u-W_γ(t), t\ge0$ is referred to as the risk process with tax of a loss-carry-forward type, whereas in queueing theory $W_1$ is referred to as the queue length process. In this paper, we investigate the ruin probability and the ruin time of the risk process $R_γ, γ\in [0,1]$ over a surplus dependent time interval $[0, T_u]$.

The Ginger-shaped Asteroid 4179 Toutatis: New Observations from a Successful Flyby of Chang'e-2

On 13 December 2012, Chang'e-2 conducted a successful flyby of the near-Earth asteroid 4179 Toutatis at a closest distance of 770 $\pm$ 120 meters from the asteroid's surface. The highest-resolution image, with a resolution of better than 3 meters, reveals new discoveries on the asteroid, e.g., a giant basin at the big end, a sharply perpendicular silhouette near the neck region, and direct evidence of boulders and regolith, which suggests that Toutatis may bear a rubble-pile structure. Toutatis' maximum physical length and width are (4.75 $\times$ 1.95 km) $\pm$10$\%$, respectively, and the direction of the +$z$ axis is estimated to be (250$\pm$5$^\circ$, 63$\pm$5$^\circ$) with respect to the J2000 ecliptic coordinate system. The bifurcated configuration is indicative of a contact binary origin for Toutatis, which is composed of two lobes (head and body). Chang'e-2 observations have significantly improved our understanding of the characteristics, formation, and evolution of asteroids in general.
