Multi-Functional RIS Integrated Sensing and Communications for 6G Networks

In this paper, we propose a novel multi-functional reconfigurable intelligent surface (MF-RIS) that supports signal reflection, refraction, amplification, and target sensing simultaneously. Our MF-RIS aims to enhance integrated communication and sensing (ISAC) systems, particularly in multi-user and multi-target scenarios. Equipped with reflection and refraction components (i.e., amplifiers and phase shifters), MF-RIS is able to adjust the amplitude and phase shift of both communication and sensing signals on demand. Additionally, with the assistance of sensing elements, MF-RIS is capable of capturing the echo signals from multiple targets, thereby mitigating the signal attenuation typically associated with multi-hop links. We propose a MF-RIS-enabled multi-user and multi-target ISAC system, and formulate an optimization problem to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of sensing targets. This problem involves jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming and MF-RIS configurations, subject to constraints on the communication rate, total power budget, and MF-RIS coefficients. We decompose the formulated non-convex problem into three sub-problems, and then solve them via an efficient iterative algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that: 1) The performance of MF-RIS varies under different operating protocols, and energy splitting (ES) exhibits the best performance in the considered MF-RIS-enabled multi-user multi-target ISAC system; 2) Under the same total power budget, the proposed MF-RIS with ES protocol attains 52.2%, 73.5% and 60.86% sensing SINR gains over active RIS, passive RIS, and simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS), respectively; 3) The number of sensing elements will no longer improve sensing performance after exceeding a certain number.

60 Data Points are Sufficient to Fine-Tune LLMs for Question-Answering

Large language models (LLMs) encode extensive world knowledge through pre-training on massive datasets, which can then be fine-tuned for the question-answering (QA) task. However, effective strategies for fine-tuning LLMs for the QA task remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, we categorize supervised fine-tuning (SFT) data based on the extent of knowledge memorized by the pretrained LLMs and conduct a series of empirical analyses. Our experiments, involving four LLMs from three different model families, focus on three key factors: the amount of data required for SFT, the impact of different SFT datasets on model performance, and how data requirements vary across LLMs. The results show that as few as 60 data points during the SFT stage can activate the knowledge encoded during pre-training, enabling LLMs to perform the QA task. Additionally, SFT with data of varying memory levels has a significant impact on LLM performance, with the optimal dataset differing based on the specific model being fine-tuned. Future research will delve deeper into the mechanisms underlying these phenomena.

CrowdEgress: A Multi-Agent Simulation Platform for Pedestrian Crowd

This article introduces a simulation platform to study complex crowd behavior in social context. The agent-based model is extended based on the social force model, and it mainly describes how agents interact with each other, and also with surrounding facilities such as walls, doors and exits. The simulation platform is compatible to FDS+Evac, and the input data in FDS+Evac could be imported into our simulation platform to create single-floor compartment geometry, and a flow solver is used to generate the roadmap towards exits. Most importantly, we plan to integrate advanced social and psychological theory into our simulation platform, especially investigating human behavior in emergency evacuation, such as pre-evacuation behavior, exit-selection activities, social group and herding effect and so forth.

FineCops-Ref: A new Dataset and Task for Fine-Grained Compositional Referring Expression Comprehension

Referring Expression Comprehension (REC) is a crucial cross-modal task that objectively evaluates the capabilities of language understanding, image comprehension, and language-to-image grounding. Consequently, it serves as an ideal testing ground for Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs). In pursuit of this goal, we have established a new REC dataset characterized by two key features: Firstly, it is designed with controllable varying levels of difficulty, necessitating multi-level fine-grained reasoning across object categories, attributes, and multi-hop relationships. Secondly, it includes negative text and images created through fine-grained editing and generation based on existing data, thereby testing the model's ability to correctly reject scenarios where the target object is not visible in the image--an essential aspect often overlooked in existing datasets and approaches. Utilizing this high-quality dataset, we conducted comprehensive evaluations of both state-of-the-art specialist models and MLLMs. Our findings indicate that there remains a significant gap in achieving satisfactory grounding performance. We anticipate that our dataset will inspire new approaches to enhance visual reasoning and develop more advanced cross-modal interaction strategies, ultimately unlocking the full potential of MLLMs. Our code and the datasets are available at https://github.com/liujunzhuo/FineCops-Ref.

SceneVTG++: Controllable Multilingual Visual Text Generation in the Wild

Generating visual text in natural scene images is a challenging task with many unsolved problems. Different from generating text on artificially designed images (such as posters, covers, cartoons, etc.), the text in natural scene images needs to meet the following four key criteria: (1) Fidelity: the generated text should appear as realistic as a photograph and be completely accurate, with no errors in any of the strokes. (2) Reasonability: the text should be generated on reasonable carrier areas (such as boards, signs, walls, etc.), and the generated text content should also be relevant to the scene. (3) Utility: the generated text can facilitate to the training of natural scene OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tasks. (4) Controllability: The attribute of the text (such as font and color) should be controllable as needed. In this paper, we propose a two stage method, SceneVTG++, which simultaneously satisfies the four aspects mentioned above. SceneVTG++ consists of a Text Layout and Content Generator (TLCG) and a Controllable Local Text Diffusion (CLTD). The former utilizes the world knowledge of multi modal large language models to find reasonable text areas and recommend text content according to the nature scene background images, while the latter generates controllable multilingual text based on the diffusion model. Through extensive experiments, we respectively verified the effectiveness of TLCG and CLTD, and demonstrated the state-of-the-art text generation performance of SceneVTG++. In addition, the generated images have superior utility in OCR tasks like text detection and text recognition. Codes and datasets will be available.

A New Underdetermined Framework for Sparse Estimation of Fault Location for Transmission Lines Using Limited Current Measurements

This letter proposes an alternative underdetermined framework for fault location that utilizes current measurements along with the branch-bus matrix, providing another option besides the traditional voltage-based methods. To enhance fault location accuracy in the presence of multiple outliers, the robust YALL1 algorithm is used to resist outlier interference and accurately recover the sparse vector, thereby pinpointing the fault precisely. The results on the IEEE 39-bus test system demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

Sparsified Simultaneous Confidence Intervals for High-Dimensional Linear Models

Statistical inference of the high-dimensional regression coefficients is challenging because the uncertainty introduced by the model selection procedure is hard to account for. A critical question remains unsettled; that is, is it possible and how to embed the inference of the model into the simultaneous inference of the coefficients? To this end, we propose a notion of simultaneous confidence intervals called the sparsified simultaneous confidence intervals. Our intervals are sparse in the sense that some of the intervals' upper and lower bounds are shrunken to zero (i.e., $[0,0]$), indicating the unimportance of the corresponding covariates. These covariates should be excluded from the final model. The rest of the intervals, either containing zero (e.g., $[-1,1]$ or $[0,1]$) or not containing zero (e.g., $[2,3]$), indicate the plausible and significant covariates, respectively. The proposed method can be coupled with various selection procedures, making it ideal for comparing their uncertainty. For the proposed method, we establish desirable asymptotic properties, develop intuitive graphical tools for visualization, and justify its superior performance through simulation and real data analysis.

Observation of Thouless pumping of light in quasiperiodic photonic crystals

Topological transport is determined by global properties of physical media where it occurs and is characterized by quantized amounts of adiabatically transported quantities. Discovered for periodic potentials it was also explored in disordered and discrete quasi-periodic systems. Here we report on experimental observation of pumping of a light beam in a genuinely continuous incommensurate photorefractive quasi-crystal emulated by its periodic approximants. We observe a universal character of the transport which is determined by the ratio between periods of the constitutive sublattices, by the sliding angle between them, and by Chern numbers of the excited bands (in the time-coordinate space) of the approximant, for which pumping is adiabatic. This reveals that the properties of quasi-periodic systems determining the topological transport are tightly related to those of their periodic approximants and can be observed and studied in a large variety of physical systems. Our results suggest that the links between quasi periodic systems and their periodic approximants go beyond the pure mathematical relations: they manifest themselves in physical phenomena which can be explored experimentally.

Observation of localization of light in photonic quasicrystals of diverse symmetries

Quasicrystals are ubiquitous in nature. Beyond crystalline solids, they can be created as optically induced or technologically fabricated structures in photonic and phononic systems, as potentials for cold atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). On a parwith the unusual structural properties of quasicrystals, nowadays the problem of wave propagation in such two-dimensional structures attracts considerable attention, already in earlier studies it was predicted that the lowest electronic states in five-fold quasicrystals are localized. Later on localization of BECs in an eight-fold rotational symmetric quasicrystal optical lattices was observed. Direct observation of localization in purely linear photonic quasicrystals, therefore, remains elusive. Here, using sets of interfering plane waves, we create photonic two-dimensional quasicrystals with different rotational symmetries, not allowed in periodic crystallographic structures. We demonstrate experimentally that linear localization of light does occur even in clean linear quasicrystals for probe beams propagating both in the center and off-center regions of the quasicrystals. We found that light localization occurs above a critical depth of optically induced potential and that this critical depth rapidly decreases with the increase of the order of the discrete rotational symmetry of the quasicrystal. Our results clarify a long-standing problem of wave localization in linear quasicrystals and elucidate the conditions under which this phenomenon occurs. These findings pave the way for achieving wave localization in a wide variety of aperiodic systems obeying discrete symmetries, with possible applications in photonics, atomic physics, acoustics, and condensed matter.

Fixing three dimensional geometries from entanglement entropies of CFT$_2$

In this paper, we propose a method of fixing the leading behaviors of three dimensional geometries from the dual CFT$_2$ entanglement entropies. We employ only the holographic principle and do not use any assumption about the AdS/CFT correspondence and bulk geometry. Our strategy involves using both UV and IR-like CFT$_2$ entanglement entropies to fix the bulk geodesics. With a simple trick, the metric can be extracted from the geodesics. As examples, we fix the leading behaviors of the pure AdS$_3$ metric from the entanglement entropies of free CFT$_2$ and, more importantly, the BTZ black hole from the entanglement entropies of finite temperature CFT$_2$. Consequently, CFT$_2$ with finite size or topological defects can be determined through simple transformations. Following the same steps, in principle, the leading behaviors of all three dimensional (topologically distinct) holographic classical geometries from the dual CFT$_2$ entanglement entropies can be fixed.

Neural Network-Based Frequency Optimization for Superconducting Quantum Chips

Optimizing the frequency configuration of qubits and quantum gates in superconducting quantum chips presents a complex NP-complete optimization challenge. This process is critical for enabling practical control while minimizing decoherence and suppressing significant crosstalk. In this paper, we propose a neural network-based frequency configuration approach. A trained neural network model estimates frequency configuration errors, and an intermediate optimization strategy identifies optimal configurations within localized regions of the chip. The effectiveness of our method is validated through randomized benchmarking and cross-entropy benchmarking. Furthermore, we design a crosstalk-aware hardware-efficient ansatz for variational quantum eigensolvers, achieving improved energy computations.

WISE: Rethinking the Knowledge Memory for Lifelong Model Editing of Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) need knowledge updates to meet the ever-growing world facts and correct the hallucinated responses, facilitating the methods of lifelong model editing. Where the updated knowledge resides in memories is a fundamental question for model editing. In this paper, we find that editing either long-term memory (direct model parameters) or working memory (non-parametric knowledge of neural network activations/representations by retrieval) will result in an impossible triangle -- reliability, generalization, and locality can not be realized together in the lifelong editing settings. For long-term memory, directly editing the parameters will cause conflicts with irrelevant pretrained knowledge or previous edits (poor reliability and locality). For working memory, retrieval-based activations can hardly make the model understand the edits and generalize (poor generalization). Therefore, we propose WISE to bridge the gap between memories. In WISE, we design a dual parametric memory scheme, which consists of the main memory for the pretrained knowledge and a side memory for the edited knowledge. We only edit the knowledge in the side memory and train a router to decide which memory to go through when given a query. For continual editing, we devise a knowledge-sharding mechanism where different sets of edits reside in distinct subspaces of parameters, and are subsequently merged into a shared memory without conflicts. Extensive experiments show that WISE can outperform previous model editing methods and overcome the impossible triangle under lifelong model editing of question answering, hallucination, and out-of-distribution settings across trending LLM architectures, e.g., GPT, LLaMA, and Mistral. Code is available at https://github.com/zjunlp/EasyEdit.

Black hole accretion of scalar clouds with spontaneous symmetry breaking

Spontaneous scalarization of black holes typically occurs through the condensation of a scalar field, with the field evolving from a $U(1)$-symmetric phase into a symmetry-breaking one with lower energy. We show that there exist symmetry-breaking phases which are themselves unstable to the formation of an additional scalar condensate, or `cloud', which is partly accreted into the black hole. By studying the fully nonlinear dynamical evolution of the process, we find that symmetry breaking causes the accretion channels of scalar clouds to be non-degenerate, favoring a dominant channel for evolution. Additionally, the final states form a characteristic energy band due to varying amounts of radiation emitted by clouds in different channels.

Gauss maps of Möbius surfaces in the $n$-dimensional sphere

In this note we discuss Gauss maps for Möbius surfaces in the $n$-sphere, and their applications in the study of Willmore surfaces. One such ``Gauss map'', naturally associated to a Willmore surface that has a dual Willmore surface, is the Lorentzian $2$-plane bundle given by a lift of the suface and its dual. More generally, we define the concept of a Lorentzian $2$-plane lift for an arbitrary Möbius surface, and show that the conformal harmonicity of this lift is equivalent to the Willmore condition for the surface. This clarifies some previous work of F. Hélein, Q. Xia-Y Shen, X. Ma and others, and, for instance, allows for the treatment of the Björling problem for Willmore surfaces in the presence of umbilics.

DumpyOS: A Data-Adaptive Multi-ary Index for Scalable Data Series Similarity Search

Data series indexes are necessary for managing and analyzing the increasing amounts of data series collections that are nowadays available. These indexes support both exact and approximate similarity search, with approximate search providing high-quality results within milliseconds, which makes it very attractive for certain modern applications. Reducing the pre-processing (i.e., index building) time and improving the accuracy of search results are two major challenges. DSTree and the iSAX index family are state-of-the-art solutions for this problem. However, DSTree suffers from long index building times, while iSAX suffers from low search accuracy. In this paper, we identify two problems of the iSAX index family that adversely affect the overall performance. First, we observe the presence of a proximity-compactness trade-off related to the index structure design (i.e., the node fanout degree), significantly limiting the efficiency and accuracy of the resulting index. Second, a skewed data distribution will negatively affect the performance of iSAX. To overcome these problems, we propose Dumpy, an index that employs a novel multi-ary data structure with an adaptive node splitting algorithm and an efficient building workflow. Furthermore, we devise Dumpy-Fuzzy as a variant of Dumpy which further improves search accuracy by proper duplication of series. To fully leverage the potential of modern hardware including multicore CPUs and Solid State Drives (SSDs), we parallelize Dumpy to DumpyOS with sophisticated indexing and pruning-based querying algorithms. An optimized approximate search algorithm, DumpyOS-F which prominently improves the search accuracy without violating the index, is also proposed.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface for Internet of Robotic Things

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, robotics, and Internet of Things, multi-robot systems are progressively acquiring human-like environmental perception and understanding capabilities, empowering them to complete complex tasks through autonomous decision-making and interaction. However, the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) faces significant challenges in terms of spectrum resources, sensing accuracy, communication latency, and energy supply. To address these issues, a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided IoRT network is proposed to enhance the overall performance of robotic communication, sensing, computation, and energy harvesting. In the case studies, by jointly optimizing parameters such as transceiver beamforming, robot trajectories, and RIS coefficients, solutions based on multi-agent deep reinforcement learning and multi-objective optimization are proposed to solve problems such as beamforming design, path planning, target sensing, and data aggregation. CC-OCR: A Comprehensive and Challenging OCR Benchmark for Evaluating Large Multimodal Models in Literacy

Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) have demonstrated impressive performance in recognizing document images with natural language instructions. However, it remains unclear to what extent capabilities in literacy with rich structure and fine-grained visual challenges. The current landscape lacks a comprehensive benchmark to effectively measure the literate capabilities of LMMs. Existing benchmarks are often limited by narrow scenarios and specified tasks. To this end, we introduce CC-OCR, a comprehensive benchmark that possesses a diverse range of scenarios, tasks, and challenges. CC-OCR comprises four OCR-centric tracks: multi-scene text reading, multilingual text reading, document parsing, and key information extraction. It includes 39 subsets with 7,058 full annotated images, of which 41% are sourced from real applications, and released for the first time. We evaluate nine prominent LMMs and reveal both the strengths and weaknesses of these models, particularly in text grounding, multi-orientation, and hallucination of repetition. CC-OCR aims to comprehensively evaluate the capabilities of LMMs on OCR-centered tasks, facilitating continued progress in this crucial area.

Charge state transition of spectrally stabilized tin-vacancy centers in diamond

Solid-state quantum emitters are an important platform for quantum information processing. The fabrication of the emitters with stable photon frequency and narrow linewidth is a fundamental issue, and it is essential to understand optical conditions under which the emitter keeps a bright charge state or transitions to a dark state. For these purposes, in this study, we investigate the spectral stability and charge state transition of tin-vacancy (SnV) centers in diamond. The photoluminescence excitation spectra of multiple SnV centers are basically stable over time with nearly transform-limited linewidths under resonant excitation, while simultaneous irradiation of resonant and non-resonant lasers makes spectra from the SnV centers unstable. We find that the instability occurs due to the charge state transition to a dark state. The charge state transition rates are quantitatively investigated depending on the laser powers. Lastly, with first-principle calculations, we model the charge state transition of the SnV center under the laser irradiation.
