TriDo-Former: A Triple-Domain Transformer for Direct PET Reconstruction from Low-Dose Sinograms

To obtain high-quality positron emission tomography (PET) images while minimizing radiation exposure, various methods have been proposed for reconstructing standard-dose PET (SPET) images from low-dose PET (LPET) sinograms directly. However, current methods often neglect boundaries during sinogram-to-image reconstruction, resulting in high-frequency distortion in the frequency domain and diminished or fuzzy edges in the reconstructed images. Furthermore, the convolutional architectures, which are commonly used, lack the ability to model long-range non-local interactions, potentially leading to inaccurate representations of global structures. To alleviate these problems, we propose a transformer-based model that unites triple domains of sinogram, image, and frequency for direct PET reconstruction, namely TriDo-Former. Specifically, the TriDo-Former consists of two cascaded networks, i.e., a sinogram enhancement transformer (SE-Former) for denoising the input LPET sinograms and a spatial-spectral reconstruction transformer (SSR-Former) for reconstructing SPET images from the denoised sinograms. Different from the vanilla transformer that splits an image into 2D patches, based specifically on the PET imaging mechanism, our SE-Former divides the sinogram into 1D projection view angles to maintain its inner-structure while denoising, preventing the noise in the sinogram from prorogating into the image domain. Moreover, to mitigate high-frequency distortion and improve reconstruction details, we integrate global frequency parsers (GFPs) into SSR-Former. The GFP serves as a learnable frequency filter that globally adjusts the frequency components in the frequency domain, enforcing the network to restore high-frequency details resembling real SPET images. Validations on a clinical dataset demonstrate that our TriDo-Former outperforms the state-of-the-art methods qualitatively and quantitatively.

A Survey on Deep Learning-based Spatio-temporal Action Detection

Spatio-temporal action detection (STAD) aims to classify the actions present in a video and localize them in space and time. It has become a particularly active area of research in computer vision because of its explosively emerging real-world applications, such as autonomous driving, visual surveillance, entertainment, etc. Many efforts have been devoted in recent years to building a robust and effective framework for STAD. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art deep learning-based methods for STAD. Firstly, a taxonomy is developed to organize these methods. Next, the linking algorithms, which aim to associate the frame- or clip-level detection results together to form action tubes, are reviewed. Then, the commonly used benchmark datasets and evaluation metrics are introduced, and the performance of state-of-the-art models is compared. At last, this paper is concluded, and a set of potential research directions of STAD are discussed.

Transform-Limited Photon Emission From a Lead-Vacancy Center in Diamond Above 10 K

Transform-limited photon emission from quantum emitters is essential for high-fidelity entanglement generation. In this study, we report the coherent optical property of a single negatively-charged lead-vacancy (PbV) center in diamond. Photoluminescence excitation measurements reveal stable fluorescence with a linewidth of 39 MHz at 6 K, close to the transform-limit estimated from the lifetime measurement. We observe four orders of magnitude different linewidths of the two zero-phonon-lines, and find that that the phonon-induced relaxation in the ground state contributes to this huge difference in the linewidth. Due to the suppressed phonon absorption in the PbV center, we observe nearly transform-limited photon emission up to 16 K, demonstrating its high temperature robustness compared to other color centers in diamond.

Scalarized Kerr-Newman Black Holes

In this paper, we construct scalarized rotating black holes within the framework of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models. These models incorporate non-minimal couplings that can induce tachyonic instabilities, leading to the spontaneous scalarization of Kerr-Newman (KN) black holes. By exploring the domain of existence, we observe that the presence of scalarized KN black holes is suppressed by the black hole spin, with a maximum spin threshold beyond which scalarized solutions cease to exist. Intriguingly, we find that in specific parameter regimes, scalarized KN black holes can exhibit the presence of two unstable and one stable light rings on the equatorial plane, manifesting in both prograde and retrograde directions.

Reasoning Through Memorization: Nearest Neighbor Knowledge Graph Embeddings

Previous knowledge graph embedding approaches usually map entities to representations and utilize score functions to predict the target entities, yet they typically struggle to reason rare or emerging unseen entities. In this paper, we propose kNN-KGE, a new knowledge graph embedding approach with pre-trained language models, by linearly interpolating its entity distribution with k-nearest neighbors. We compute the nearest neighbors based on the distance in the entity embedding space from the knowledge store. Our approach can allow rare or emerging entities to be memorized explicitly rather than implicitly in model parameters. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach can improve inductive and transductive link prediction results and yield better performance for low-resource settings with only a few triples, which might be easier to reason via explicit memory. Multi-Granularity Prediction with Learnable Fusion for Scene Text Recognition

Due to the enormous technical challenges and wide range of applications, scene text recognition (STR) has been an active research topic in computer vision for years. To tackle this tough problem, numerous innovative methods have been successively proposed, and incorporating linguistic knowledge into STR models has recently become a prominent trend. In this work, we first draw inspiration from the recent progress in Vision Transformer (ViT) to construct a conceptually simple yet functionally powerful vision STR model, which is built upon ViT and a tailored Adaptive Addressing and Aggregation (A$^3$) module. It already outperforms most previous state-of-the-art models for scene text recognition, including both pure vision models and language-augmented methods. To integrate linguistic knowledge, we further propose a Multi-Granularity Prediction strategy to inject information from the language modality into the model in an implicit way, \ie, subword representations (BPE and WordPiece) widely used in NLP are introduced into the output space, in addition to the conventional character level representation, while no independent language model (LM) is adopted. To produce the final recognition results, two strategies for effectively fusing the multi-granularity predictions are devised. The resultant algorithm (termed MGP-STR) is able to push the performance envelope of STR to an even higher level. Specifically, MGP-STR achieves an average recognition accuracy of $94\%$ on standard benchmarks for scene text recognition. Moreover, it also achieves state-of-the-art results on widely-used handwritten benchmarks as well as more challenging scene text datasets, demonstrating the generality of the proposed MGP-STR algorithm. The source code and models will be available at: \url{https://github.com/AlibabaResearch/AdvancedLiterateMachinery/tree/main/OCR/MGP-STR}.

ClueReader: Heterogeneous Graph Attention Network for Multi-hop Machine Reading Comprehension

Multi-hop machine reading comprehension is a challenging task in natural language processing as it requires more reasoning ability across multiple documents. Spectral models based on graph convolutional networks have shown good inferring abilities and lead to competitive results. However, the analysis and reasoning of some are inconsistent with those of humans. Inspired by the concept of grandmother cells in cognitive neuroscience, we propose a heterogeneous graph attention network model named ClueReader to imitate the grandmother cell concept. The model is designed to assemble the semantic features in multi-level representations and automatically concentrate or alleviate information for reasoning through the attention mechanism. The name ClueReader is a metaphor for the pattern of the model: it regards the subjects of queries as the starting points of clues, takes the reasoning entities as bridge points, considers the latent candidate entities as grandmother cells, and the clues end up in candidate entities. The proposed model enables the visualization of the reasoning graph, making it possible to analyze the importance of edges connecting entities and the selectivity in the mention and candidate nodes, which is easier to comprehend empirically. Evaluations on the open-domain multi-hop reading dataset WikiHop and drug-drug interaction dataset MedHop proved the validity of ClueReader and showed the feasibility of its application of the model in the molecular biology domain.

Watch out Venomous Snake Species: A Solution to SnakeCLEF2023

The SnakeCLEF2023 competition aims to the development of advanced algorithms for snake species identification through the analysis of images and accompanying metadata. This paper presents a method leveraging utilization of both images and metadata. Modern CNN models and strong data augmentation are utilized to learn better representation of images. To relieve the challenge of long-tailed distribution, seesaw loss is utilized in our method. We also design a light model to calculate prior probabilities using metadata features extracted from CLIP in post processing stage. Besides, we attach more importance to venomous species by assigning venomous species labels to some examples that model is uncertain about. Our method achieves 91.31% score of the final metric combined of F1 and other metrics on private leaderboard, which is the 1st place among the participators. DiffDP: Radiotherapy Dose Prediction via a Diffusion Model

Currently, deep learning (DL) has achieved the automatic prediction of dose distribution in radiotherapy planning, enhancing its efficiency and quality. However, existing methods suffer from the over-smoothing problem for their commonly used L_1 or L_2 loss with posterior average calculations. To alleviate this limitation, we innovatively introduce a diffusion-based dose prediction (DiffDP) model for predicting the radiotherapy dose distribution of cancer patients. Specifically, the DiffDP model contains a forward process and a reverse process. In the forward process, DiffDP gradually transforms dose distribution maps into Gaussian noise by adding small noise and trains a noise predictor to predict the noise added in each timestep. In the reverse process, it removes the noise from the original Gaussian noise in multiple steps with the well-trained noise predictor and finally outputs the predicted dose distribution map. To ensure the accuracy of the prediction, we further design a structure encoder to extract anatomical information from patient anatomy images and enable the noise predictor to be aware of the dose constraints within several essential organs, i.e., the planning target volume and organs at risk. Extensive experiments on an in-house dataset with 130 rectum cancer patients demonstrate the s

Oxidation kinetics and non-Marcusian charge transfer in dimensionally confined semiconductors

Electrochemical reactions represent essential processes in fundamental chemistry that foster a wide range of applications. Although most electrochemical reactions in bulk substances can be well described by the classical Marcus-Gerischer charge transfer theory, the realistic reaction character and mechanism in dimensionally confined systems remain unknown. Here, we report the multiparametric survey on the kinetics of lateral photooxidation in structurally identical WS2 and MoS2 monolayers, where electrochemical oxidation occurs at the atomically thin monolayer edges. The oxidation rate is correlated quantitatively with various crystallographic and environmental parameters, including the density of reactive sites, humidity, temperature, and illumination fluence. In particular, we observe distinctive reaction barriers of 1.4 and 0.9 eV for the two structurally identical semiconductors and uncover an unusual non-Marcusian charge transfer mechanism in these dimensionally confined monolayers due to the limit in reactant supplies. A scenario of band bending is proposed to explain the discrepancy in reaction barriers. These results add important knowledge into the fundamental electrochemical reaction theory in low-dimensional systems.

Terahertz reconfigurable multi-functional metamaterials based on 3D printed mortise-tenon structures

The emergence of metamaterial has provided an unprecedented ability to manipulate electromagnetic waves, especially in the terahertz band where there is a lack of natural response materials. However, most metamaterials are fixed single function due to the fixed structure at the beginning of design. The paper reports a reconfigurable multi-functional terahertz metamaterial with variable structures based on mortise and tenon mechanism. And a hybrid 3D printing method based on FDM and E-jet is proposed to fabricate the metamaterials, which simplifies the processing process, improves the speed, and reduces the cost compared to traditional semiconductor processing methods. Through flexible mortise and tenon connections, the metamaterial can achieve: (1) narrowband transmission and broadband absorption; (2) perfect reflection; (3) narrowband reflection and broadband absorption. Relying on ingenious design and processing, the multi-functional metamaterials are expected to be widely used in fields such as electromagnetic shielding, radar stealth, communication and so on.

Dual Modality Prompt Tuning for Vision-Language Pre-Trained Model

With the emergence of large pre-trained vison-language model like CLIP, transferable representations can be adapted to a wide range of downstream tasks via prompt tuning. Prompt tuning tries to probe the beneficial information for downstream tasks from the general knowledge stored in the pre-trained model. A recently proposed method named Context Optimization (CoOp) introduces a set of learnable vectors as text prompt from the language side. However, tuning the text prompt alone can only adjust the synthesized "classifier", while the computed visual features of the image encoder can not be affected , thus leading to sub-optimal solutions. In this paper, we propose a novel Dual-modality Prompt Tuning (DPT) paradigm through learning text and visual prompts simultaneously. To make the final image feature concentrate more on the target visual concept, a Class-Aware Visual Prompt Tuning (CAVPT) scheme is further proposed in our DPT, where the class-aware visual prompt is generated dynamically by performing the cross attention between text prompts features and image patch token embeddings to encode both the downstream task-related information and visual instance information. Extensive experimental results on 11 datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and generalization ability of the proposed method. Our code is available in https://github.com/fanrena/DPT.

Projected Tensor Power Method for Hypergraph Community Recovery

This paper investigates the problem of exact community recovery in the symmetric $d$-uniform $(d \geq 2)$ hypergraph stochastic block model ($d$-HSBM). In this model, a $d$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ nodes is generated by first partitioning the $n$ nodes into $K\geq 2$ equal-sized disjoint communities and then generating hyperedges with a probability that depends on the community memberships of $d$ nodes. Despite the non-convex and discrete nature of the maximum likelihood estimation problem, we develop a simple yet efficient iterative method, called the \emph{projected tensor power method}, to tackle it. As long as the initialization satisfies a partial recovery condition in the logarithmic degree regime of the problem, we show that our proposed method can exactly recover the hidden community structure down to the information-theoretic limit with high probability. Moreover, our proposed method exhibits a competitive time complexity of $\mathcal{O}(n\log^2n/\log\log n)$ when the aforementioned initialization condition is met. We also conduct numerical experiments to validate our theoretical findings.

Fast and Automatic 3D Modeling of Antenna Structure Using CNN-LSTM Network for Efficient Data Generation

Deep learning-assisted antenna design methods such as surrogate models have gained significant popularity in recent years due to their potential to greatly increase design efficiencies by replacing the time-consuming full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulations. However, a large number of training data with sufficiently diverse and representative samples (antenna structure parameters, scattering properties, etc.) is mandatory for these methods to ensure good performance. Traditional antenna modeling methods relying on manual model construction and modification are time-consuming and cannot meet the requirement of efficient training data acquisition. In this study, we proposed a deep learning-assisted and image-based intelligent modeling approach for accelerating the data acquisition of antenna samples with different physical structures. Specifically, our method only needs an image of the antenna structure, usually available in scientific publications, as the input while the corresponding modeling codes (VBA language) are generated automatically. The proposed model mainly consists of two parts: Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) networks. The former is used for capturing features of antenna structure images and the latter is employed to generate the modeling codes. Through training, the proposed model can achieve fast and automatic data acquisition of antenna physical structures based on antenna images. Experiment results show that the proposed method achieves a significant speed enhancement than the manual modeling approach. This approach lays the foundation for efficient data acquisition needed to build robust surrogate models in the future.

Non-invasive digital etching of van der Waals semiconductors

The capability to finely tailor material thickness with simultaneous atomic precision and non-invasivity would be useful for constructing quantum platforms and post-Moore microelectronics. However, it remains challenging to attain synchronized controls over tailoring selectivity and precision. Here we report a protocol that allows for non-invasive and atomically digital etching of van der Waals transition-metal dichalcogenides through selective alloying via low-temperature thermal diffusion and subsequent wet etching. The mechanism of selective alloying between sacrifice metal atoms and defective or pristine dichalcogenides is analyzed with high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. Also, the non-invasive nature and atomic level precision of our etching technique are corroborated by consistent spectral, crystallographic and electrical characterization measurements. The low-temperature charge mobility of as-etched MoS$_2$ reaches up to $1200\,$cm$^{2}\cdot$V$^{-1}\cdot$s$^{-1}$, comparable to that of exfoliated pristine counterparts. The entire protocol represents a highly precise and non-invasive tailoring route for material manipulation.

BAD-NeRF: Bundle Adjusted Deblur Neural Radiance Fields

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have received considerable attention recently, due to its impressive capability in photo-realistic 3D reconstruction and novel view synthesis, given a set of posed camera images. Earlier work usually assumes the input images are of good quality. However, image degradation (e.g. image motion blur in low-light conditions) can easily happen in real-world scenarios, which would further affect the rendering quality of NeRF. In this paper, we present a novel bundle adjusted deblur Neural Radiance Fields (BAD-NeRF), which can be robust to severe motion blurred images and inaccurate camera poses. Our approach models the physical image formation process of a motion blurred image, and jointly learns the parameters of NeRF and recovers the camera motion trajectories during exposure time. In experiments, we show that by directly modeling the real physical image formation process, BAD-NeRF achieves superior performance over prior works on both synthetic and real datasets. Antiferromagnetic $α$-MnTe: Molten-Salt-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition Growth and Magneto-Transport Properties

Antiferromagnetic (AF) materials are attracting increasing interest of research in magnetic physics and spintronics. Here, we report controllable synthesis of room-temperature AF $α$-MnTe nanocrystals (Néel temperature ~ 307 K) via molten-salt-assisted chemical vapor deposition method. The growth kinetics are investigated regarding the dependence of flake dimension and macroscopic shape on growth time and temperature. The high crystalline quality and atomic structure are confirmed by various crystallographic characterization means. Cryogenic magneto-transport measurements reveal anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR) response and a complicated dependence of MR on temperature, owing to the subtle competition among multiple scattering mechanisms of thermally excited magnetic disorders (magnon drag), magnetic transition and thermally populated lattice phonons. Overall positive MR behavior with twice transitions in magnitude is observed when out-of-plane external magnetic field ($B$) is applied, while a transition from negative to positive MR response is recorded when in-plane $B$ is applied. The rich magnetic transport properties render $α$-MnTe a promising material for exploiting functional components in magnetic devices.
