Show, Attend and Read: A Simple and Strong Baseline for Irregular Text Recognition

Recognizing irregular text in natural scene images is challenging due to the large variance in text appearance, such as curvature, orientation and distortion. Most existing approaches rely heavily on sophisticated model designs and/or extra fine-grained annotations, which, to some extent, increase the difficulty in algorithm implementation and data collection. In this work, we propose an easy-to-implement strong baseline for irregular scene text recognition, using off-the-shelf neural network components and only word-level annotations. It is composed of a $31$-layer ResNet, an LSTM-based encoder-decoder framework and a 2-dimensional attention module. Despite its simplicity, the proposed method is robust and achieves state-of-the-art performance on both regular and irregular scene text recognition benchmarks. The large-scale environment from cosmological simulations II: The redshift evolution and distributions of baryons

Following Cui et al. 2018 (hereafter Paper I) on the classification of large-scale environments (LSE) at z = 0, we push our analysis to higher redshifts and study the evolution of LSE and the baryon distributions in them. Our aim is to investigate how baryons affect the LSE as a function of redshift. In agreement with Paper I, the baryon models have negligible effect on the LSE over all investigated redshifts. We further validate the conclusion obtained in Paper I that the gas web is an unbiased tracer of total matter -- even better at high redshifts. By separating the gas mainly by temperature, we find that about 40 per cent of gas is in the so-called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). This fraction of gas mass in the WHIM decreases with redshift, especially from z = 1 (29 per cent) to z = 2.1 (10 per cent). By separating the whole WHIM gas mass into the four large-scale environments (i.e. voids, sheets, filaments, and knots), we find that about half of the WHIM gas is located in filaments. Although the total gas mass in WHIM decreases with redshift, the WHIM mass fractions in the different LSE seem unchanged.

Willmore surfaces in spheres: the DPW approach via the conformal Gauss map

The paper builds a DPW approach of Willmore surfaces via conformal Gauss maps. As applications, we provide descriptions of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb R^{n+2}$, isotropic surfaces in $S^4$ and homogeneous Willmore tori via the loop group method. A new example of a Willmore two-sphere in $S^6$ without dual surfaces is also presented.

Structural Recurrent Neural Network for Traffic Speed Prediction

Deep neural networks have recently demonstrated the traffic prediction capability with the time series data obtained by sensors mounted on road segments. However, capturing spatio-temporal features of the traffic data often requires a significant number of parameters to train, increasing computational burden. In this work we demonstrate that embedding topological information of the road network improves the process of learning traffic features. We use a graph of a vehicular road network with recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to infer the interaction between adjacent road segments as well as the temporal dynamics. The topology of the road network is converted into a spatio-temporal graph to form a structural RNN (SRNN). The proposed approach is validated over traffic speed data from the road network of the city of Santander in Spain. The experiment shows that the graph-based method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods based on spatio-temporal images, requiring much fewer parameters to train.

Temporal contrast reduction techniques for high dynamic-range single-shot temporal contrast measurement

A single-shot characterization of the temporal contrast of a petawatt laser pulse with a high dynamic-range, is important not only for improving conditions of the petawatt laser facility itself, but also for various high-intensity laser physics experiments, which is still a difficult problem. In this study, a new idea for improving the dynamic-range of a single-shot temporal contrast measurement using novel temporal contrast reduction techniques is proposed. The proof-of-principle experiments applying single stage of pulse stretching, anti-saturated absorption, or optical Kerr effect successfully reduce the temporal contrast by approximately one order of magnitude. Combining with the SRSI-ETE method, its dynamic-range characterization capability is improved by approximately one order of magnitude to approximately 109. It is expected that a higher dynamic-range temporal contrast can be characterized using cascaded temporal contrast reduction processes.

Three-dimensional laser printing of macro-scale glass objects at a micro-scale resolution

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has allowed for production of geometrically complex 3D objects with extreme flexibility, which is currently undergoing rapid expansions in terms of materials, functionalities, as well as areas of application. When attempting to print 3D microstructures in glass, femtosecond laser induced chemical etching (FLICE) has proved itself a powerful approach. Here, we demonstrate fabrication of macro-scale 3D glass objects of large heights up to ~3.8 cm with a well-balanced (i.e., lateral vs longitudinal) spatial resolution of ~20 μm. The remarkable accomplishment is achieved by revealing an unexplored regime in the interaction of ultrafast laser pulses with fused silica which results in aberration-free focusing of the laser pulses deeply inside fused silica.

Terahertz oscilloscope for recording time information of ultrashort electron beams

We propose and demonstrate a Terahertz (THz) oscilloscope for recording time information of an ultrashort electron beam. By injecting a laser-driven THz pulse with circular polarization into a dielectric tube, the electron beam is swept helically such that the time information is uniformly encoded into the angular distribution that allows one to characterize both the temporal profile and timing jitter of an electron beam. The dynamic range of the measurement in such a configuration is significantly increased compared to deflection with a linearly polarized THz pulse. With this THz oscilloscope, nearly 50-fold longitudinal compression of a relativistic electron beam to about 15 fs (rms) is directly visualized with its arrival time determined with 3 fs accuracy. This technique bridges the gap between streaking of photoelectrons with optical lasers and deflection of relativistic electron beams with radio-frequency deflectors, and should have wide applications in many ultrashort electron beam based facilities.

Palladium Diselenide Long-Wavelength Infrared Photodetector with High Sensitivity and Stability

A long-wavelength infrared (IR) photodetector based on two-dimensional materials working at room temperature would have wide applications in many aspects in remote sensing, thermal imaging, biomedical optics, and medical imaging. However, sub-bandgap light detection in graphene and black phosphorus has been a long-standing scientific challenge because of low photoresponsivity, instability in the air and highdark current. In this study, we report a highly sensitive, air-stable and operable long-wavelength infrared photodetector at room temperature based on PdSe2 phototransistors and its heterostructure. A high photoresponsivity of ~42.1 AW-1 (at 10.6 μm) was demonstrated, which is an order of magnitude higher than the current record of platinum diselenide. Moreover, the dark current and noise power density were suppressed effectively by fabricating a van der Waals heterostructure. This work fundamentally contributes to establishing long-wavelength infrared detection by PdSe2 at the forefront of long-IR two-dimensional-materials-based photonics.

Weierstrass-Kenmotsu representation of Willmore surfaces in spheres

A Willmore surface $y:M\rightarrow S^{n+2}$ has a natural harmonic oriented conformal Gauss map $Gr_y:M\rightarrow SO^{+}(1,n+3)/SO(1,3)\times SO(n)$, which maps each point $p\in M$ to its oriented mean curvature 2-sphere at $p$. An easy observation shows that all conformal Gauss maps of Willmore surfaces satisfy a restricted nilpotency condition which will be called "strongly conformally harmonic." The goal of this paper is to characterize those strongly conformally harmonic maps from a Riemann surface $M$ to $SO^+ (1, n + 3)/{SO^+(1, 3) \times SO(n) }$ which are the conformal Gauss maps of some Willmore surface in $S^{n+2}.$ It turns out that generically the condition of being strongly conformally harmonic suffices to be associated to a Willmore surface. The exceptional case will also be discussed.

An Efficient Solver for Cumulative Density Function-based Solutions of Uncertain Kinematic Wave Models

We develop a numerical framework to implement the cumulative density function (CDF) method for obtaining the probability distribution of the system state described by a kinematic wave model. The approach relies on Monte Carlo Simulations (MCS) of the fine-grained CDF equation of system state, as derived by the CDF method. This fine-grained CDF equation is solved via the method of characteristics. Each method of characteristics solution is far more computationally efficient than the direct solution of the kinematic wave model, and the MCS estimator of the CDF converges relatively quickly. We verify the accuracy and robustness of our procedure via comparison with direct MCS of a particular kinematic wave system, the Saint-Venant equation.

RPC: A Large-Scale Retail Product Checkout Dataset

Over recent years, emerging interest has occurred in integrating computer vision technology into the retail industry. Automatic checkout (ACO) is one of the critical problems in this area which aims to automatically generate the shopping list from the images of the products to purchase. The main challenge of this problem comes from the large scale and the fine-grained nature of the product categories as well as the difficulty for collecting training images that reflect the realistic checkout scenarios due to continuous update of the products. Despite its significant practical and research value, this problem is not extensively studied in the computer vision community, largely due to the lack of a high-quality dataset. To fill this gap, in this work we propose a new dataset to facilitate relevant research. Our dataset enjoys the following characteristics: (1) It is by far the largest dataset in terms of both product image quantity and product categories. (2) It includes single-product images taken in a controlled environment and multi-product images taken by the checkout system. (3) It provides different levels of annotations for the check-out images. Comparing with the existing datasets, ours is closer to the realistic setting and can derive a variety of research problems. Besides the dataset, we also benchmark the performance on this dataset with various approaches. The dataset and related resources can be found at \url{https://rpc-dataset.github.io/}.

Thermodynamics and Phase Transition of a Nonlinear Electrodynamics Black Hole in a Cavity

We discuss the thermodynamics of a general nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) asymptotically flat black hole enclosed in a finite spherical cavity. A canonical ensemble is considered, which means that the temperature and the charge on the wall of the cavity are fixed. After the free energy is obtained by computing the Euclidean action, it shows that the first law of thermodynamics is satisfied at the locally stationary points of the free energy. Focusing on a Born-Infeld (BI) black hole in a cavity, the phase structure and transition in various regions of the parameter space are investigated. In the region where the BI electrodynamics has weak nonlinearities, Hawking-Page-like and van der Waals-like phase transitions occur, and a tricritical point appears. In the region where the BI electrodynamics has strong enough nonlinearities, only Hawking-Page-like phase transitions occur. The phase diagram of the BI black hole in a cavity can have dissimilarity from that of a BI black hole using asymptotically anti-de Sitter boundary conditions. The dissimilarity may stem from a lack of an appropriate reference state with the same charge and temperature for the BI-AdS black hole.

A Facile Method for Precise Layer Number Identification of Two-Dimensional Materials through Optical Images

Optical microscopy is believed to be an efficient method for identifying layer number of two-dimensional 2D materials. However, since illuminants, cameras and their parameters are different from lab to lab, it is impossible to identify layer numbers just by comparing a given optical image with standard or calculated images under standard conditions. Here we reported an image reconstruction method, converting raw optical images acquired by arbitrary illuminants and cameras into reconstructed images at specified illuminant and specified camera. After image reconstruction, the color differences of each layer number roughly equaled those calculated under specified condition. By comparing the color differences in reconstructed image with those calculated under specified condition, the layer numbers of 2D materials in our lab and published papers, including MoS2, WS2 and WSe2, were ambiguously identified. This study makes optical microscopy a precise method for identifying layer numbers of 2D materials on known substrate.

Implicit Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Boltzmann Equation

An implicit high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is developed to find steady-state solution of rarefied gas flow described by the Boltzmann equation with full collision operator. In the physical space, velocity distribution function is approximated by the piecewise polynomials of degree up to 4, while in the velocity space the fast spectral method is incorporated into the DG to evaluate the collision operator. A specific polynomial approximation for the collision operator is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of the fast spectral method by $K$ times, where for two-dimensional problems $K$ is 15 when DG with 4th-order polynomials are used on triangular mesh. Based on the first-order upwind scheme, a sweeping technique is employed to solve the local linear equations resulting from the DG discretization sequentially over spatial elements. This technique can preserve stability of the scheme and requires no nonlinear limiter in solving hypersonic rarefied gas flow when the flow is fully resolved. Moreover, without assembling large sparse linear system, the computational cost in terms of memory and CPU time can be significantly reduced. Five different one/two-dimensional tests including low-speed microscale flows and hypersonic rarefied gas flows are used to verify the proposed approach. Our results show that, DG schemes of different order of approximating polynomial require the same number of iterative steps to obtain the steady-state solution with the same order of accuracy; and the higher order the scheme, fewer spatial elements thus less CPU time is needed. Besides, our method can be faster than the finite difference solver by about one order of magnitude. The produced solutions can be used as benchmark data for assessing the accuracy of other gas kinetic solvers for the Boltzmann equation and gas kinetic models that simplify the Boltzmann collision operator.

Generation of high-energy clean multicolored ultrashort pulses and their application in single-shot temporal contrast measurement

We demonstrate the generation of 100-μJ-level multicolored femtosecond pulses based on a single-stage cascaded four-wave mixing (CFWM) process in a thin glass plate. The generated high-energy CFWM signals can shift the central wavelength and have well-enhanced temporal contrast because of the third-order nonlinear process. They are innovatively used as clean sampling pulses of a cross-correlator for single-shot temporal contrast measurement. With a simple home-made setup, the proof-of-principle experimental results demonstrate the single-shot cross-correlator with dynamic range of 1010, temporal resolution of about 160 fs and temporal window of 50 ps. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration in which both the dynamic range and the temporal resolution of a single-shot temporal contrast measurement are comparable to those of a commercial delay-scanning cross-correlator.

Polarization-insensitive space-selective etching in fused silica induced by picosecond laser irradiation

It is well known that when the fused silica is irradiated with focused femtosecond laser beams, space selective chemical etching can be achieved. The etching rate depends sensitively on the polarization of the laser. Surprisingly, we observe that by chirping the Fourier-transform-limited femtosecond laser pulses to picosecond pulses, the polarization dependence of the etching rate disappears, whereas an efficient etching rate can still be maintained. Observation with a scanning electron microscope reveals that the chirped pulses can induce interconnected nanocracks in the irradiated areas which facilitates efficient introduction of the etchant into the microchannel. The reported technology is of great use for fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) microfluidic systems and glass-based 3D printing.

Neighbourhood Watch: Referring Expression Comprehension via Language-guided Graph Attention Networks

The task in referring expression comprehension is to localise the object instance in an image described by a referring expression phrased in natural language. As a language-to-vision matching task, the key to this problem is to learn a discriminative object feature that can adapt to the expression used. To avoid ambiguity, the expression normally tends to describe not only the properties of the referent itself, but also its relationships to its neighbourhood. To capture and exploit this important information we propose a graph-based, language-guided attention mechanism. Being composed of node attention component and edge attention component, the proposed graph attention mechanism explicitly represents inter-object relationships, and properties with a flexibility and power impossible with competing approaches. Furthermore, the proposed graph attention mechanism enables the comprehension decision to be visualisable and explainable. Experiments on three referring expression comprehension datasets show the advantage of the proposed approach.

Towards Effective Deep Embedding for Zero-Shot Learning

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) can be formulated as a cross-domain matching problem: after being projected into a joint embedding space, a visual sample will match against all candidate class-level semantic descriptions and be assigned to the nearest class. In this process, the embedding space underpins the success of such matching and is crucial for ZSL. In this paper, we conduct an in-depth study on the construction of embedding space for ZSL and posit that an ideal embedding space should satisfy two criteria: intra-class compactness and inter-class separability. While the former encourages the embeddings of visual samples of one class to distribute tightly close to the semantic description embedding of this class, the latter requires embeddings from different classes to be well separated from each other. Towards this goal, we present a simple but effective two-branch network to simultaneously map semantic descriptions and visual samples into a joint space, on which visual embeddings are forced to regress to their class-level semantic embeddings and the embeddings crossing classes are required to be distinguishable by a trainable classifier. Furthermore, we extend our method to a transductive setting to better handle the model bias problem in ZSL (i.e., samples from unseen classes tend to be categorized into seen classes) with minimal extra supervision. Specifically, we propose a pseudo labeling strategy to progressively incorporate the testing samples into the training process and thus balance the model between seen and unseen classes. Experimental results on five standard ZSL datasets show the superior performance of the proposed method and its transductive extension.
