Efficient SDP Inference for Fully-connected CRFs Based on Low-rank Decomposition

Conditional Random Fields (CRF) have been widely used in a variety of computer vision tasks. Conventional CRFs typically define edges on neighboring image pixels, resulting in a sparse graph such that efficient inference can be performed. However, these CRFs fail to model long-range contextual relationships. Fully-connected CRFs have thus been proposed. While there are efficient approximate inference methods for such CRFs, usually they are sensitive to initialization and make strong assumptions. In this work, we develop an efficient, yet general algorithm for inference on fully-connected CRFs. The algorithm is based on a scalable SDP algorithm and the low- rank approximation of the similarity/kernel matrix. The core of the proposed algorithm is a tailored quasi-Newton method that takes advantage of the low-rank matrix approximation when solving the specialized SDP dual problem. Experiments demonstrate that our method can be applied on fully-connected CRFs that cannot be solved previously, such as pixel-level image co-segmentation.

Bernstein type theorems for spacelike stationary graphs in Minkowski spaces

For entire spacelike stationary 2-dimensional graphs in Minkowski spaces, we establish Bernstein type theorems under specific boundedness assumptions either on the W-function or on the total (Gaussian) curvature. These conclusions imply the classical Bernstein theorem for minimal surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space and Calabi's theorem for spacelike maximal surfaces in 3-dimensional Minkowski space.

Minimal Length Effects on Entanglement Entropy of Spherically Symmetric Black Holes in Brick Wall Model

We compute the black hole horizon entanglement entropy for a massless scalar field in the brick wall model by incorporating the minimal length. Taking the minimal length effects on the occupation number $n(ω,l)$ and the Hawking temperature into consideration, we obtain the leading UV divergent term and the subleading logarithmic term in the entropy. The leading divergent term scales with the horizon area. The subleading logarithmic term is the same as that in the usual brick wall model without the minimal length.

Performance Analysis of Raptor Codes under Maximum-Likelihood (ML) Decoding

Raptor codes have been widely used in many multimedia broadcast/multicast applications. However, our understanding of Raptor codes is still incomplete due to the insufficient amount of theoretical work on the performance analysis of Raptor codes, particularly under maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding, which provides an optimal benchmark on the system performance for the other decoding schemes to compare against. For the first time, this paper provides an upper bound and a lower bound, on the packet error performance of Raptor codes under ML decoding, which is measured by the probability that all source packets can be successfully decoded by a receiver with a given number of successfully received coded packets. Simulations are conducted to validate the accuracy of the analysis. More specifically, Raptor codes with different degree distribution and pre-coders, are evaluated using the derived bounds with high accuracy.

A characterization of the Ejiri torus in $S^{5}$

Ejiri's torus in $S^5$ is the first example of Willmore surface which is not conformally equivalent to any minimal surface in any space forms. Li and Vrancken classified all Willmore surfaces of tensor product in $S^{n}$ by reducing them into elastic curves in $S^3$, and the Ejiri torus appeared as a special example. In this paper, we first prove that among all Willmore tori of tensor product, the Willmore functional of the Ejiri torus in $S^5$ attains the minimum $2π^2\sqrt{3}$. Then we show that all Willmore tori of tensor product are unstable when the co-dimension is big enough. We also show that the Ejiri torus is unstable in $S^5$. Moreover, similar to Li and Vrancken, we classify all constrained Willmore surfaces of tensor product by reducing them with elastic curves in $S^3$. All constrained Willmore tori obtained this way are also shown to be unstable when the co-dimension is big enough. We conjecture that a Willmore torus having Willmore functional between $2π^2$ and $2π^2\sqrt{3}$ is either the Clifford torus, or the Ejiri torus.

Minimal Length Effects on Schwinger Mechanism

In this paper, we investigate effects of the minimal length on the Schwinger mechanism using the quantum field theory (QFT) incorporating the minimal length. We first study the Schwinger mechanism for scalar fields in both usual QFT and the deformed QFT. The same calculations are then performed in the case of Dirac particles. Finally, we discuss how our results imply for the corrections to the Unruh temperature and the Hawking temperature due to the minimal length.

Minimal Length Effects on Tunnelling from Spherically Symmetric Black Holes

In this paper, we investigate effects of the minimal length on quantum tunnelling from spherically symmetric black holes using the Hamilton-Jacobi method incorporating the minimal length. We first derive the deformed Hamilton-Jacobi equations for scalars and fermions, both of which have the same expressions. The minimal length correction to the Hawking temperature is found to depend on the black hole's mass and the mass and angular momentum of emitted particles. Finally, we calculate a Schwarzschild black hole's luminosity and find the black hole evaporates to zero mass in infinite time.

Non-commutativity from the double sigma model

We show how non-commutativity arises from commutativity in the double sigma model. We demonstrate that this model is intrinsically non-commutative by calculating the propagators. In the simplest phase configuration, there are two dual copies of commutative theories. In general rotated frames, one gets a non-commutative theory and a commutative partner. Thus a non-vanishing $B$ also leads to a commutative theory. Our results imply that $O\left(D,D\right)$ symmetry unifies not only the big and small torus physics, but also the commutative and non-commutative theories. The physical interpretations of the metric and other parameters in the double sigma model are completely dictated by the boundary conditions. The open-closed relation is also an $O(D,D)$ rotation and naturally leads to the Seiberg-Witten map. Moreover, after applying a second dual rotation, we identify the description parameter in the Seiberg-Witten map as an $O(D,D)$ group parameter and all theories are non-commutative under this composite rotation. As a bonus, the propagators of general frames in double sigma model for open string are also presented.

A coupled discrete unified gas-kinetic scheme for Boussinesq flows

Recently, the discrete unified gas-kinetic scheme (DUGKS) [Z. L. Guo \emph{et al}., Phys. Rev. E ${\bf 88}$, 033305 (2013)] based on the Boltzmann equation is developed as a new multiscale kinetic method for isothermal flows. In this paper, a thermal and coupled discrete unified gas-kinetic scheme is derived for the Boussinesq flows, where the velocity and temperature fields are described independently. Kinetic boundary conditions for both velocity and temperature fields are also proposed. The proposed model is validated by simulating several canonical test cases, including the porous plate problem, the Rayleigh-bénard convection, and the natural convection with Rayleigh number up to $10^{10}$ in a square cavity. The results show that the coupled DUGKS is of second order accuracy in space and can well describe the convection phenomena from laminar to turbulent flows. Particularly, it is found that this new scheme has better numerical stability in simulating high Rayleigh number flows compared with the previous kinetic models.

A semi-Lagrangian gas-kinetic scheme for smooth flows

In this paper, a semi-Lagrangian gas-kinetic scheme is developed for smooth flows based on the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) equation. As a finite-volume scheme, the evolution of the average flow variables in a control volume is under the Eulerian framework, whereas the construction of the numerical flux across the cell interface comes from the Lagrangian perspective. The adoption of the Lagrangian aspect makes the collision and the transport mechanisms intrinsically coupled together in the flux evaluation. As a result, the time step is independent of the particle collision time and solely determined by the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) conditions. A set of simulations are carried out to validate the performance of the new scheme. The results show that with second-order spatial accuracy, the scheme exhibits low numerical dissipation, and can accurately capture the Navier-Stokers solutions for the smooth flows with viscous heat dissipation from the low-speed incompressible to hypersonic compressible regimes.

Numerical cosmology on the GPU with Enzo and Ramses

A number of scientific numerical codes can currently exploit GPUs with remarkable performance. In astrophysics, Enzo and Ramses are prime examples of such applications. The two codes have been ported to GPUs adopting different strategies and programming models, Enzo adopting CUDA and Ramses using OpenACC. We describe here the different solutions used for the GPU implementation of both cases. Performance benchmarks will be presented for Ramses. The results of the usage of the more mature GPU version of Enzo, adopted for a scientific project within the CHRONOS programme, will be summarised.

Discrete unified gas kinetic scheme with force term for incompressible fluid flows

The discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (DUGKS) is a finite-volume scheme with discretization of particle velocity space, which combines the advantages of both lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) method and unified gas kinetic scheme (UGKS) method, such as the simplified flux evaluation scheme, flexible mesh adaption and the asymptotic preserving properties. However, DUGKS is proposed for near incompressible fluid flows, the existing compressible effect may cause some serious errors in simulating incompressible problems. To diminish the compressible effect, in this paper a novel DUGKS model with external force is developed for incompressible fluid flows by modifying the approximation of Maxwellian distribution. Meanwhile, due to the pressure boundary scheme, which is wildly used in many applications, has not been constructed for DUGKS, the non-equilibrium extrapolation (NEQ) scheme for both velocity and pressure boundary conditions is introduced. To illustrate the potential of the proposed model, numerical simulations of steady and unsteady flows are performed. The results indicate that the proposed model can reduce the compressible effect efficiently against the original DUGKS model, and the NEQ scheme fits well with our model as they are both of second-order accuracy. We also implement the proposed model in simulating the three dimensional problem: cubical lid-driven flow. The comparisons of numerical solutions and benchmarks are presented in terms of data and topology. And the motion pattern of the fluid particles in a specific area is characterized for the steady-state cubical lid-driven flows.

Classification of Willmore 2-spheres in the 5-dimensional sphere

The classification of Willmore 2-spheres in the $n$-dimensional sphere $S^n$ is a long-standing problem, solved only when $n=3,4$ by Bryant, Ejiri, Musso and Montiel independently. In this paper we give a classification when $n=5$. There are three types of such surfaces up to Möbius transformations: (1) super-conformal surfaces in $S^4$; (2) minimal surfaces in $R^5$; (3) adjoint transforms of super-conformal minimal surfaces in $R^5$. In particular, Willmore surfaces in the third class are not S-Willmore (i.e., without a dual Willmore surface). To show the existence of Willmore 2-spheres in $S^5$ of type (3), we describe all adjoint transforms of a super-conformal minimal surfaces in $R^n$ and provide some explicit criterions on the immersion property. As an application, we obtain new immersed Willmore 2-spheres in $S^5$ and $S^6$, which are not S-Willmore.

Tuning the catalytic activity of graphene nanosheets for oxygen reduction reaction via size and thickness reduction

Currently, the fundamental factors that control the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of graphene itself, in particular the dependence of the ORR activity on the number of exposed edge sites remain elusive, mainly due to limited synthesis routes of achieving small size graphene. In this work, the synthesis of low oxygen content (< 2.5 +/-0.2 at %), few layer graphene nanosheets with lateral dimensions smaller than a few hundred nm was achieved using a combination of ionic liquid assisted grinding of high purity graphite coupled with sequential centrifugation. We show for the first time, that the graphene nanosheets possessing a plethora of edges exhibited considerably higher electron transfer numbers compared to the thicker graphene nanoplatelets. This enhanced ORR activity was accomplished by successfully exploiting the plethora of edges of the nanosized graphene as well as the efficient electron communication between the active edge sites and the electrode substrate. The graphene nanosheets were characterized by an onset potential of -0.13 V vs. Ag/AgCl and a current density of -3.85 mA/cm2 at -1 V, which represent the best ORR performance ever achieved from an undoped carbon based catalyst. This work demonstrates how low oxygen content nanosized graphene synthesized by a simple route can considerably impact the ORR catalytic activity and hence it is of significance in designing and optimizing advanced metal-free ORR electrocatalysts.

Quantum gravity corrections to the tunneling radiation of scalar particles

The original derivation of Hawking radiation shows the complete evaporation of black holes. However, theories of quantum gravity predict the existence of the minimal observable length. In this paper, we investigate the tunneling radiation of the scalar particles by introducing quantum gravity effects influenced by the generalized uncertainty principle. The Hawking temperatures are not only determined by the properties of the black holes, but also affected by the quantum numbers of the emitted particles. The quantum gravity corrections slow down the increase of the temperatures. The remnants are found during the evaporation.

Multi-Gigabits Millimetre Wave Wireless Communications for 5G: From Fixed Access to Cellular Networks

With the formidable growth of various booming wireless communication services that require ever-increasing data throughputs, the conventional microwave band below 10 GHz, which is currently used by almost all mobile communication systems, is going to reach its saturation point within just a few years. Therefore, the attention of radio system designers has been pushed towards ever-higher segments of the frequency spectrum in a quest for capacity increase. In this article, we investigate the feasibility, advantages and challenges of future wireless communications over the E-band frequencies. We start from a brief review of the history of E-band spectrum and its light licensing policy as well as benefits/challenges. Then we introduce the propagation characteristics of E-band signals, based on which some potential fixed and mobile applications at the E-band are investigated. In particular, we analyze the achievability of non-trivial multiplexing gain in fixed point-to-point E-band links and propose an E-band mobile broadband (EMB) system as a candidate for the next generation mobile communication networks. The channelization and frame structure of the EMB system are discussed in details.

Deformed Hamilton-Jacobi Method in Covariant Quantum Gravity Effective Models

We first briefly revisit the original Hamilton-Jacobi method and show that the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the action $I$ of tunnelings of a fermionic particle from a charged black hole can be written in the same form as that of a scalar particle. For the low energy quantum gravity effective models which respect covariance of the curved spacetime, we derive the deformed model-independent KG/Dirac and Hamilton-Jacobi equations using the methods of effective field theory. We then find that, to all orders of the effective theories, the deformed Hamilton-Jacobi equations can be obtained from the original ones by simply replacing the mass of emitted particles $m$ with a parameter $m_{eff}$ that includes all the quantum gravity corrections. Therefore, in this scenario, there will be no corrections to the Hawking temperature of a black hole from the quantum gravity effects if its original Hawking temperature is independent of the mass of emitted particles. As a consequence, our results show that breaking covariance in quantum gravity effective models is a key for a black hole to have the remnant left in the evaporation.
