Thermodynamic Magnon Recoil for Domain Wall Motion

We predict a thermodynamic magnon recoil effect for domain wall motions in the presence of temperature gradients. All current thermodynamic theories assert that a magnetic domain wall must move toward the hotter side, based on equilibrium thermodynamic arguments. Microscopic calculations on the other hand show that a domain wall can move either along or against the direction of heat currents, depending on how strong the heat currents are reflected by the domain wall. We have resolved the inconsistency between these two approaches by augmenting the theory in the presence of thermal gradients by incorporating in the free energy of domain walls by a heat current term present in nonequilibrium steady states. The condition to observe a domain wall propagation toward the colder regime is derived analytically and can be tested by future experiments.

Exchange Magnon-Polaritons in Microwave Cavities

We formulate a scattering theory to study magnetic films in microwave cavities beyond the independent-spin and rotating wave approximations of the Tavis-Cummings model. We demonstrate that strong coupling can be realized not only for the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) mode, but also for spin wave resonances (SWRs); the coupling strengths are mode dependent and decrease with increasing mode index. The strong coupling regime can be also accessed electrically by spin pumping into a metal contact.

Coherent elastic excitation of spin waves

We model the injection of elastic waves into a ferromagnetic film (F) by a non-magnetic transducer (N). We compare the configurations in which the magnetization is normal and parallel to the wave propagation. The lack of axial symmetry in the former results in the emergence of evanescent interface states. We compute the energy-flux transmission across the N$|$F interface and sound-induced magnetization dynamics in the ferromagnet. We predict efficient acoustically induced pumping of spin current into a metal contact attached to F.

Angular and Linear Momentum of Excited Ferromagnets

The angular momentum vector of a Heisenberg ferromagnet with isotropic exchange interaction is conserved, while under uniaxial crystalline anisotropy the projection of the total spin along the easy axis is a constant of motion. Using Noether's theorem, we prove that these conservation laws persist in the presence of dipole-dipole interactions. However, spin and orbital angular momentum are not conserved separately. We also define the linear momentum of ferromagnetic textures. We illustrate the general principles with special reference to the spin transfer torques and identify the emergence of a non-adiabatic effective field acting on domain walls in ferromagnetic insulators.

Domain wall heat conductance in ferromagnetic wires

We present a theoretical study of heat transport in electrically insulating ferromagnetic wires containing a domain wall. In the regime of validity of continuum micromagnetism a domain wall is found to have no effect on the heat conductance. However, spin waves are found to be reflected by domain walls with widths of a few lattice spacings, which is associated with emergence of an additional spin wave bound state. The resulting domain wall heat conductance should be significant for thin films of Yttrium Iron Garnet with sharply defined magnetic domains.
