Swallowing the Poison Pills: Insights from Vulnerability Disparity Among LLMs

Modern large language models (LLMs) exhibit critical vulnerabilities to poison pill attacks: localized data poisoning that alters specific factual knowledge while preserving overall model utility. We systematically demonstrate these attacks exploit inherent architectural properties of LLMs, achieving 54.6% increased retrieval inaccuracy on long-tail knowledge versus dominant topics and up to 25.5% increase retrieval inaccuracy on compressed models versus original architectures. Through controlled mutations (e.g., temporal/spatial/entity alterations) and, our method induces localized memorization deterioration with negligible impact on models' performance on regular standard benchmarks (e.g., <2% performance drop on MMLU/GPQA), leading to potential detection evasion. Our findings suggest: (1) Disproportionate vulnerability in long-tail knowledge may result from reduced parameter redundancy; (2) Model compression may increase attack surfaces, with pruned/distilled models requiring 30% fewer poison samples for equivalent damage; (3) Associative memory enables both spread of collateral damage to related concepts and amplification of damage from simultaneous attack, particularly for dominant topics. These findings raise concerns over current scaling paradigms since attack costs are lowering while defense complexity is rising. Our work establishes poison pills as both a security threat and diagnostic tool, revealing critical security-efficiency trade-offs in language model compression that challenges prevailing safety assumptions.

New intelligent empowerment for digital transformation

This study proposes an innovative evaluation method based on large language models (LLMs) specifically designed to measure the digital transformation (DT) process of enterprises. By analyzing the annual reports of 4407 companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq from 2005 to 2022, a comprehensive set of DT indicators was constructed. The findings revealed that DT significantly improves a company's financial performance, however, different digital technologies exhibit varying effects on financial performance. Specifically, blockchain technology has a relatively limited positive impact on financial performance. In addition, this study further discovered that DT can promote the growth of financial performance by enhancing operational efficiency and reducing costs. This study provides a novel DT evaluation tool for the academic community, while also expanding the application scope of generative artificial intelligence technology in economic research.

Internet sentiment exacerbates intraday overtrading, evidence from A-Share market

Market fluctuations caused by overtrading are important components of systemic market risk. This study examines the effect of investor sentiment on intraday overtrading activities in the Chinese A-share market. Employing high-frequency sentiment indices inferred from social media posts on the Eastmoney forum Guba, the research focuses on constituents of the CSI 300 and CSI 500 indices over a period from 01/01/2018, to 12/30/2022. The empirical analysis indicates that investor sentiment exerts a significantly positive impact on intraday overtrading, with the influence being more pronounced among institutional investors relative to individual traders. Moreover, sentiment-driven overtrading is found to be more prevalent during bull markets as opposed to bear markets. Additionally, the effect of sentiment on overtrading is observed to be more pronounced among individual investors in large-cap stocks compared to small- and mid-cap stocks.

Volatility-based strategy on Chinese equity index ETF options

This study examines the performance of a volatility-based strategy using Chinese equity index ETF options. Initially successful, the strategy's effectiveness waned post-2018. By integrating GARCH models for volatility forecasting, the strategy's positions and exposures are dynamically adjusted. The results indicate that such an approach can enhance returns in volatile markets, suggesting potential for refined trading strategies in China's evolving derivatives landscape. The research underscores the importance of adaptive strategies in capturing market opportunities amidst changing trading dynamics.
