EndoPerfect: High-Accuracy Monocular Depth Estimation and 3D Reconstruction for Endoscopic Surgery via NeRF-Stereo Fusion

In endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), intraoperative CT (iCT) offers valuable intraoperative assessment but is constrained by slow deployment and radiation exposure, limiting its clinical utility. Endoscope-based monocular 3D reconstruction is a promising alternative; however, existing techniques often struggle to achieve the submillimeter precision required for dense reconstruction. In this work, we propose an iterative online learning approach that leverages Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) as an intermediate representation, enabling monocular depth estimation and 3D reconstruction without relying on prior medical data. Our method attains a point-to-point accuracy below 0.5 mm, with a demonstrated theoretical depth accuracy of 0.125 $\pm$ 0.443 mm. We validate our approach across synthetic, phantom, and real endoscopic scenarios, confirming its accuracy and reliability. These results underscore the potential of our pipeline as an iCT alternative, meeting the demanding submillimeter accuracy standards required in ESS.

GMAI-MMBench: A Comprehensive Multimodal Evaluation Benchmark Towards General Medical AI

Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) are capable of handling diverse data types such as imaging, text, and physiological signals, and can be applied in various fields. In the medical field, LVLMs have a high potential to offer substantial assistance for diagnosis and treatment. Before that, it is crucial to develop benchmarks to evaluate LVLMs' effectiveness in various medical applications. Current benchmarks are often built upon specific academic literature, mainly focusing on a single domain, and lacking varying perceptual granularities. Thus, they face specific challenges, including limited clinical relevance, incomplete evaluations, and insufficient guidance for interactive LVLMs. To address these limitations, we developed the GMAI-MMBench, the most comprehensive general medical AI benchmark with well-categorized data structure and multi-perceptual granularity to date. It is constructed from 284 datasets across 38 medical image modalities, 18 clinical-related tasks, 18 departments, and 4 perceptual granularities in a Visual Question Answering (VQA) format. Additionally, we implemented a lexical tree structure that allows users to customize evaluation tasks, accommodating various assessment needs and substantially supporting medical AI research and applications. We evaluated 50 LVLMs, and the results show that even the advanced GPT-4o only achieves an accuracy of 53.96%, indicating significant room for improvement. Moreover, we identified five key insufficiencies in current cutting-edge LVLMs that need to be addressed to advance the development of better medical applications. We believe that GMAI-MMBench will stimulate the community to build the next generation of LVLMs toward GMAI.

Movable Antenna-Enhanced Wireless Powered Mobile Edge Computing Systems

In this paper, we propose a movable antenna (MA) enhanced scheme for wireless powered mobile edge computing (WP-MEC) system, where the hybrid access point (HAP) equipped with multiple MAs first emits wireless energy to charge wireless devices (WDs), and then receives the offloaded tasks from the WDs for edge computing. The MAs deployed at the HAP enhance the spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs) by flexibly adjusting the positions of MAs within an available region, thereby improving the efficiency of both downlink wireless energy transfer (WPT) and uplink task offloading. To balance the performance enhancement against the implementation intricacy, we further propose three types of MA positioning configurations, i.e., dynamic MA positioning, semi-dynamic MA positioning, and static MA positioning. In addition, the non-linear power conversion of energy harvesting (EH) circuits at the WDs and the finite computing capability at the edge server are taken into account. Our objective is to maximize the sum computational rate (SCR) by jointly optimizing the time allocation, positions of MAs, energy beamforming matrix, receive combing vectors, and offloading strategies of WDs. To solve the non-convex problems, efficient alternating optimization (AO) frameworks are proposed. Moreover, we propose a hybrid algorithm of particle swarm optimization with variable local search (PSO-VLS) to solve the sub-problem of MA positioning. Numerical results validate the superiority of exploiting MAs over the fixed-position antennas (FPAs) for enhancing the SCR performance of WP-MEC systems.

STAR-RIS Assisted Wireless-Powered and Backscattering Mobile Edge Computing Networks

Wireless powered and backscattering mobile edge computing (WPB-MEC) network is a novel network paradigm to supply energy supplies and computing resource to wireless sensors (WSs). However, its performance is seriously affected by severe attenuations and inappropriate assumptions of infinite computing capability at the hybrid access point (HAP). To address the above issues, in this paper, we propose a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) aided scheme for boosting the performance of WPB-MEC network under the constraint of finite computing capability. Specifically, energy-constrained WSs are able to offload tasks actively or passively from them to the HAP. In this process, the STAR-RIS is utilized to improve the quantity of harvested energy and strengthen the offloading efficiency by adapting its operating protocols. We then maximize the sum computational bits (SCBs) under the finite computing capability constraint. To handle the solving challenges, we first present interesting results in closed-form and then design a block coordinate descent (BCD) based algorithm, ensuring a near-optimal solution. Finally, simulation results are provided to confirm that our proposed scheme can improve the SCBs by 9.9 times compared to the local computing only scheme.

Enhancing Medical Task Performance in GPT-4V: A Comprehensive Study on Prompt Engineering Strategies

OpenAI's latest large vision-language model (LVLM), GPT-4V(ision), has piqued considerable interest for its potential in medical applications. Despite its promise, recent studies and internal reviews highlight its underperformance in specialized medical tasks. This paper explores the boundary of GPT-4V's capabilities in medicine, particularly in processing complex imaging data from endoscopies, CT scans, and MRIs etc. Leveraging open-source datasets, we assessed its foundational competencies, identifying substantial areas for enhancement. Our research emphasizes prompt engineering, an often-underutilized strategy for improving AI responsiveness. Through iterative testing, we refined the model's prompts, significantly improving its interpretative accuracy and relevance in medical imaging. From our comprehensive evaluations, we distilled 10 effective prompt engineering techniques, each fortifying GPT-4V's medical acumen. These methodical enhancements facilitate more reliable, precise, and clinically valuable insights from GPT-4V, advancing its operability in critical healthcare environments. Our findings are pivotal for those employing AI in medicine, providing clear, actionable guidance on harnessing GPT-4V's full diagnostic potential.

Visualizing the atomic-scale origin of metallic behavior in Kondo insulators

A Kondo lattice is often electrically insulating at low temperatures. However, several recent experiments have detected signatures of bulk metallicity within this Kondo insulating phase. Here we visualize the real-space charge landscape within a Kondo lattice with atomic resolution using a scanning tunneling microscope. We discover nanometer-scale puddles of metallic conduction electrons centered around uranium-site substitutions in the heavy-fermion compound URu$_2$Si$_2$, and around samarium-site defects in the topological Kondo insulator SmB$_6$. These defects disturb the Kondo screening cloud, leaving behind a fingerprint of the metallic parent state. Our results suggest that the mysterious 3D quantum oscillations measured in SmB$_6$ could arise from these Kondo-lattice defects, although we cannot rule out other explanations. Our imaging technique could enable the development of atomic-scale charge sensors using heavy-fermion probes.

Sum-Rate Maximization in Active RIS-Assisted Multi-Antenna WPCN

In this paper, we propose an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) enabled hybrid relaying scheme for a multi-antenna wireless powered communication network (WPCN), where the active RIS is employed to assist both wireless energy transfer (WET) from the power station (PS) to energy-constrained users and wireless information transmission (WIT) from users to the receiving station (RS). For further performance enhancement, we propose to employ both transmit beamforming at the PS and receive beamforming at the RS. We formulate a sum-rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the RIS phase shifts and amplitude reflection coefficients for both the WET and the WIT, transmit and receive beamforming vectors, and network resource allocation. To solve this non-convex problem, we propose an efficient alternating optimization algorithm with linear minimum mean squared error criterion, semi-definite relaxation (SDR) and successive convex approximation techniques. Specifically, the tightness of applying the SDR is proved. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme with 10 reflecting elements (REs) and 4 antennas can achieve 17.78% and 415.48% performance gains compared to the single-antenna scheme with 10 REs and passive RIS scheme with 100 REs, respectively.

Microwave-frequency scanning gate microscopy of a Si/SiGe double quantum dot

Conventional quantum transport methods can provide quantitative information on spin, orbital, and valley states in quantum dots, but often lack spatial resolution. Scanning tunneling microscopy, on the other hand, provides exquisite spatial resolution of the local electronic density of states, but often at the expense of speed. Working to combine the spatial resolution and energy sensitivity of scanning probe microscopy with the speed of microwave measurements, we couple a metallic probe tip to a Si/SiGe double quantum dot that is integrated with a local charge detector. We first demonstrate that a dc-biased tip can be used to change the charge occupancy of the double dot. We then apply microwave excitation through the scanning tip to drive photon-assisted tunneling transitions in the double dot. We infer the double dot energy level diagram from the frequency and detuning dependence of the photon-assisted tunneling resonance condition. These measurements allow us to resolve $\sim$65 $μ$eV excited states, an energy scale consistent with typical valley splittings in Si/SiGe. Future extensions of this approach may allow spatial mapping of the valley splitting in Si devices, which is of fundamental importance for spin-based quantum processors.

Cryogen-free scanning gate microscope for the characterization of Si/Si$_{0.7}$Ge$_{0.3}$ quantum devices at milli-Kelvin temperatures

Silicon can be isotopically enriched, allowing for the fabrication of highly coherent semiconductor spin qubits. However, the conduction band of bulk Si exhibits a six-fold valley degeneracy, which may adversely impact the performance of silicon quantum devices. To date, the spatial characterization of valley states in Si remains limited. Moreover, techniques for probing valley states in functional electronic devices are needed. We describe here a cryogen-free scanning gate microscope for the characterization of Si/Si$_{0.7}$Ge$_{0.3}$ quantum devices at mK temperatures. The microscope is based on the Pan-walker design, with coarse positioning piezo stacks and a fine scanning piezo tube. A tungsten microscope tip is attached to a tuning fork for active control of the tip-to-sample distance. To reduce vibration noise from the pulse tube cooler, we utilize both active and passive vibration isolation mechanisms, and achieve a root-mean-square noise in $z$ of $\sim$ 2 nm. Our microscope is designed to characterize fully functioning Si/Si$_{0.7}$Ge$_{0.3}$ quantum devices. As a proof of concept, we use the microscope to manipulate the charge occupation of a Si quantum dot, opening up a range of possibilities for the exploration of quantum devices and materials.

Generations of high efficiency, high purity, and broadband Laguerre-Gaussian modes from a Janus optical parametric oscillator

Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes, carrying orbital angular momentum of light, are critical for important applications such as high-capacity optical communications, super-resolution imaging, and multi-dimensional quantum entanglement. Advanced developments in these applications strongly demand reliable and tunable LG mode laser sources, which, however, do not yet exist. Here, we experimentally demonstrate highly-efficient, highly-pure, broadly-tunable, and topological-charge-controllable LG modes from a Janus optical parametric oscillator (OPO). Janus OPO featuring two-face cavity mode is designed to guarantee an efficient evolution from a Gaussian-shaped fundamental pumping mode to a desired LG parametric mode. The output LG mode has a tunable wavelength between 1.5 um and 1.6 um with a conversion efficiency above 15%, a topological charge switchable from -4 to 4, and a mode purity as high as 97%, which provides a high-performance solid-state light source for high-end demands in multi-dimensional multiplexing/demultiplexing, control of spin-orbital coupling between light and atoms, and so on.

Probing Image Potential States on Topological Semimetal Antimony Surface

A point charge near the surface of a topological insulator (TI) with broken time-reversal symmetry is predicted to generate an image magnetic charge in addition to an image electric charge. We use scanning tunneling spectroscopy to study the image potential states (IPS) of the topological semimetal Sb(111) surface. We observe five IPS with discrete energy levels that are well described by a one-dimensional model. The spatial variation of the IPS energies and lifetimes near surface step edges shows the first local signature of resonant interband scattering between IPS, which suggests that image charges too may interact. Our work motivates the exploration of the TI surface geometry necessary to realize and manipulate a magnetic charge.

Unexpected Zero Bias Conductance Peak on the Topological Semimetal Sb(111) with a Broken Bilayer

The long-sought Majorana fermion is expected to manifest in a topological-superconductor heterostructure as a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP). As one promising platform for such heterostructures, we investigate the cleaved surface of the topological semimetal Sb(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Remarkably, we find a robust ZBCP on some terraces of the cleaved surface, although no superconductor is present. Using quasiparticle interference imaging, Landau level spectroscopy and density functional theory, we show that the ZBCP originates from a van Hove singularity pushed up to the Fermi level by a sub-surface stacking fault. Amidst the sprint to stake claims on new Majorana fermion systems, our finding highlights the importance of using a local probe together with detailed modeling to check thoroughly for crystal imperfections that may give rise to a trivial ZBCP unrelated to Majorana physics.

Imaging emergent heavy Dirac fermions of a topological Kondo insulator

Kondo insulators are primary candidates in the search for strongly correlated topological quantum phases, which may host topological order, fractionalization, and non-Abelian statistics. Within some Kondo insulators, the hybridization gap is predicted to protect a nontrivial topological invariant and to harbor emergent heavy Dirac fermion surface modes. We use high-energy-resolution spectroscopic imaging in real and momentum space on the Kondo insulator, SmB$_6$. On cooling through $T^*_Δ\approx$ 35 K we observe the opening of an insulating gap that expands to $Δ\approx$ 10 meV at 2 K. Within the gap, we image the formation of linearly dispersing surface states with effective masses reaching $m^* = (410\pm20)m_e$. We thus demonstrate existence of a strongly correlated topological Kondo insulator phase hosting the heaviest known Dirac fermions.

High-$T_c$ $d^{0}$ ferromagnetism in a doped Mott insulator: the case of hydrogenated epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001)

We show that the $d^{0}$ ferromagnetism with high Curie temperature ($T_c$) can be achieved in the electron doped hydrogenated epitaxial graphene on some certain SiC substrates through first-principles calculations. The pristine systems are found to be a Mott insulator independent of SiC polytypes (2$H$, 4$H$ or 6$H$) which, however, play a significant role in the modulation of magnetic interaction. Carrier doping enhances the ferromagnetic coupling due to the double exchange mechanism and thus realizes the phase transition from antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism. A $T_c$ of around 400 K is predicted on the 2$H$-SiC. We employ a non-degenerate Hubbard model to demonstrate how the SiC affects the interfacial magnetism in intra-atomic Coulomb repulsion and intersite hopping interactions.

Effects of ferroelectric polarization on surface phase diagram: an evolutionary algorithm study of the BaTiO$_{3}$(001) surface

We have constructed the surface phase diagram of the BaTiO$_{3}$(001) surface by employing an evolutionary algorithm for surface structure prediction, where the ferroelectric polarization is included as a degree of freedom. Among over 1000 candidate structures explored, a surface reconstruction of (2$\times$1)-TiO is discovered to be thermodynamically stable and have the \emph{p2mm} plane group symmetry as observed experimentally. We find that the influence of ferroelectric polarization on the surface free energy can be either negligibly small or sizably large (over 1 eV per ($2 \times 1$) supercell), depending strongly on the surface structure and resulting in a significant distinction of surface phase diagram with varying ferroelectric polarization. It is therefore feasible to control the surface stability by applying an external electric field. Our results may have important implications in understanding the surface reconstruction of ferroelectric materials and tuning surface properties.

Stable two-dimensional dumbbell stanene: a quantum spin Hall insulator

We predict from first-principles calculations a novel structure of stanene with dumbbell units (DB), and show that it is a two-dimensional topological insulator with inverted band gap which can be tuned by compressive strain. Furthermore, we propose that the boron nitride sheet and reconstructed ($2\times2$) InSb(111) surfaces are ideal substrates for the experimental realization of DB stanene, maintaining its non-trivial topology. Combined with standard semiconductor technologies, such as magnetic doping and electrical gating, the quantum anomalous Hall effect, Chern half metallicity and topological superconductivity can be realized in DB stanene on those substrates. These properties make the two-dimensional supported stanene a good platform for the study of new quantum spin Hall insulator as well as other exotic quantum states of matter.

Quasi-freestanding monolayer heterostructure of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride on Ir(111) with a chiral boundary

Monolayer lateral heterostructure of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BNC) has attracted a growing attention mainly due to its tunable band-gap character and unique physical properties at interface. Hereby, we reported the first-time synthesis of a nearly freestanding h-BNC hybrid on a weakly coupled substrate of Ir (111), where graphene and h-BN possessing different surface heights and corrugations formed a perfect monolayer hybrid. With the aid of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we demonstrated that h-BN can patch alongside the boundary of pre-deposited graphene domains and vice versa to form a seamless monolayer hybrid, with the realization of predominant zigzag type chiral boundaries at the interface. Density-functional theory calculations and STM/STS measurements aided us to reveal that this interface between graphene and h-BN were atomically sharp in aspects of the chemical bonding as well as the local electronic property from both theoretical and experimental points of view.

Dirac Fermion in Strongly-Bound Graphene Systems

It is highly desirable to integrate graphene into existing semiconductor technology, where the combined system is thermodynamically stable yet maintain a Dirac cone at the Fermi level. Firstprinciples calculations reveal that a certain transition metal (TM) intercalated graphene/SiC(0001), such as the strongly-bound graphene/intercalated-Mn/SiC, could be such a system. Different from free-standing graphene, the hybridization between graphene and Mn/SiC leads to the formation of a dispersive Dirac cone of primarily TM d characters. The corresponding Dirac spectrum is still isotropic, and the transport behavior is nearly identical to that of free-standing graphene for a bias as large as 0.6 V, except that the Fermi velocity is half that of graphene. A simple model Hamiltonian is developed to qualitatively account for the physics of the transfer of the Dirac cone from a dispersive system (e.g., graphene) to an originally non-dispersive system (e.g., TM).
