Mott localization in a pure stripe antiferromagnet Rb$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1.5-σ}$S$_2$

A combination of neutron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on a pure antiferromagnetic stripe Rb$_{1-δ}$Fe$_{1.5-σ}$S$_2$ is reported. A neutron diffraction experiment on a powder sample shows that a 98$\%$ volume fraction of the sample is in the antiferromagnetic stripe phase with rhombic iron vacancy order and a refined composition of Rb$_{0.66}$Fe$_{1.36}$S$_{2}$, and that only 2$\%$ of the sample is in the block antiferromagnetic phase with $\sqrt{5}\times \sqrt{5}$ iron vacancy order. Furthermore, a neutron diffraction experiment on a single crystal shows that there is only a single phase with the stripe antiferromagnetic order with the refined composition of Rb$_{0.78}$Fe$_{1.35}$S$_2$, while the phase with block antiferromagnetic order is absent. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on the same crystal with the pure stripe phase reveal that the electronic structure is gapped at the Fermi level with a gap larger than 0.325 eV. The data collectively demonstrates that the extra 10$\%$ iron vacancies in addition to the rhombic iron vacancy order effectively impede the formation of the block antiferromagnetic phase; the data also suggest that the stripe antiferromagnetic phase with rhombic iron vacancy order is a Mott insulator.

Electronic nematic correlations in the stress free tetragonal state of BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$

We use transport and neutron scattering to study electronic, structural, and magnetic properties of the electron-doped BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ iron pnictides in the external stress free detwinned state. Using a specially designed in-situ mechanical detwinning device, we demonstrate that the in-plane resistivity anisotropy observed in the uniaxial strained tetragonal state of BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ below a temperature $T^\ast$, previously identified as a signature of the electronic nematic phase, is also present in the stress free tetragonal phase below $T^{\ast\ast}$ ($<T^\ast$). By carrying out neutron scattering measurements on BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and BaFe$_{1.97}$Ni$_{0.03}$As$_2$, we argue that the resistivity anisotropy in the stress free tetragonal state of iron pnictides arises from the magnetoelastic coupling associated with antiferromagnetic order. These results thus indicate that the local lattice distortion and nematic spin correlations are responsible for the resistivity anisotropy in the tetragonal state of iron pnictides.

Nematic crossover in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under uniaxial stress

Raman scattering can detect spontaneous point-group symmetry breaking without resorting to single-domain samples. Here we use this technique to study $\mathrm{BaFe_2As_2}$, the parent compound of the "122" Fe-based superconductors. We show that an applied compression along the Fe-Fe direction, which is commonly used to produce untwinned orthorhombic samples, changes the structural phase transition at temperature $T_{\mathrm{s}}$ into a crossover that spans a considerable temperature range above $T_{\mathrm{s}}$. Even in crystals that are not subject to any applied force, a distribution of substantial residual stress remains, which may explain phenomena that are seemingly indicative of symmetry breaking above $T_{\mathrm{s}}$. Our results are consistent with an onset of spontaneous nematicity only below $T_{\mathrm{s}}$.

Antiferromagnetic order and spin dynamics in iron-based superconductors

High-transition temperature (high-$T_c$) superconductivity in the iron pnictides/chalcogenides emerges from the suppression of the static antiferromagnetic order in their parent compounds, similar to copper oxides superconductors. This raises a fundamental question concerning the role of magnetism in the superconductivity of these materials. Neutron scattering, a powerful probe to study the magnetic order and spin dynamics, plays an essential role in determining the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity in high-$T_c$ superconductors. The rapid development of modern neutron time-of-flight spectrometers allows a direct determination of the spin dynamical properties of iron-based superconductors throughout the entire Brillouin zone. In this review, we present an overview of the neutron scattering results on iron-based superconductors, focusing on the evolution of spin excitation spectra as a function of electron/hole-doping and isoelectronic substitution. We compare spin dynamical properties of iron-based superconductors with those of copper oxide and heavy fermion superconductors, and discuss the common features of spin excitations in these three families of unconventional superconductors and their relationship with superconductivity.

Structural and magnetic phase transitions near optimal superconductivity in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

We use nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high-resolution x-ray and neutron scattering to study structural and magnetic phase transitions in phosphorus-doped BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. Previous transport, NMR, specific heat, and magnetic penetration depth measurements have provided compelling evidence for the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) near optimal superconductivity at $x=0.3$. However, we show that the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural ($T_s$) and paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic (AF, $T_N$) transitions in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ are always coupled and approach to $T_N\approx T_s \ge T_c$ ($\approx 29$ K) for $x=0.29$ before vanishing abruptly for $x\ge 0.3$. These results suggest that AF order in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ disappears in a weakly first order fashion near optimal superconductivity, much like the electron-doped iron pnictides with an avoided QCP.

Neutron spin resonance as a probe of superconducting gap anisotropy in partially detwinned electron underdoped NaFe$_{0.985}$Co$_{0.015}$As

We use inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study the spin excitations in partially detwinned NaFe$_{0.985}$Co$_{0.015}$As which has coexisting static antiferromagnetic (AF) order and superconductivity ($T_c=15$ K, $T_N=30$ K). In previous INS work on a twinned sample, spin excitations form a dispersive sharp resonance near $E_{r1}=3.25$ meV and a broad dispersionless mode at $E_{r1}=6$ meV at the AF ordering wave vector ${\bf Q}_{\rm AF}={\bf Q}_1=(1,0)$ and its twinned domain ${\bf Q}_2=(0,1)$. For partially detwinned NaFe$_{0.985}$Co$_{0.015}$As with the static AF order mostly occurring at ${\bf Q}_{\rm AF}=(1,0)$, we still find a double resonance at both wave vectors with similar intensity. Since ${\bf Q}_1=(1,0)$ characterizes the explicit breaking of the spin rotational symmetry associated with the AF order, these results indicate that the double resonance cannot be due to the static and fluctuating AF orders, but originate from the superconducting gap anisotropy.

Doping evolution of antiferromagnetism and transport properties in the non-superconducting BaFe2-2xNixCrxAs2

We report elastic neutron scattering and transport measurements on the Ni and Cr equivalently doped iron pnictide BaFe$_{2-2x}$Ni$_{x}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$. Compared with the electron-doped BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$, the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order in BaFe$_{2-2x}$Ni$_{x}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$ is gradually suppressed with vanishing ordered moment and Néel temperature near $x= 0.20$ without the appearance of superconductivity. A detailed analysis on the transport properties of BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As and BaFe$_{2-2x}$Ni$_{x}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$ suggests that the non-Fermi-liquid behavior associated with the linear resistivity as a function of temperature may not correspond to the disappearance of the static AF order. From the temperature dependence of the resistivity in overdoped compounds without static AF order, we find that the transport properties are actually affected by Cr impurity scattering, which may induce a metal-to-insulator crossover in highly doped BaFe$_{1.7-y}$Ni$_{0.3}$Cr$_{y}$As$_{2}$.

Crossover of the pairing symmetry from $s$- to $d$-wave in iron pnictide superconductors

One of the major themes in the physics of condensed matter is unconventional superconductivity in correlated electronic systems. The symmetry structure of Cooper pairs is thought to be the key to the understanding of the pairing mechanism of their superconductivity. In iron pnictide superconductors, the precise symmetry of the order parameter as well its evolution with doping remains highly controversial. There is no general consensus on the nature of pairing in iron-based superconductors leaving the perspectives ranging from $s^{++}$ wave, to $s^{\pm}$, and $d$ wave. Here we show that doping induced a sudden change of the pairing symmetry from the $s^{++}$- to $d$-wave in the BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ system with an $s^{\pm}$ state near the crossover boundary at $x=0.15$. The presence of the $s^{\pm}$ state is of particular scientific interest because an intermediate phase breaks the pairing symmetry when the $s$- and $d$-wave phases come together to interfere. For $x <$ 0.15, the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth, lower critical field, and specific heat in the superconducting (SC) state provides strong evidence for a two-band $s$-wave order parameter. Upon doping for $x >$ 0.15, we find the temperature and magnetic-field contributions to the specific heat in $T^{2}$ and $\sqrt{H}$, respectively, indicating line nodes in the SC gap. These findings thus clarify the symmetry nature as well as the evolution of the SC order parameter with doping in pnictide superconductors.

Spin Waves and Spatially Anisotropic Exchange Interactions in the $\mathrm{S=2}$ Stripe Antiferromagnet Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$

An inelastic neutron scattering study of the spin waves corresponding to the stripe antiferromagnetic order in insulating Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$ throughout the Brillouin zone is reported. The spin wave spectra are well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with anisotropic in-plane exchange interactions. Integrating the ordered moment and the spin fluctuations results in a total moment squared of $27.6\pm4.2μ_B^2$/Fe, consistent with $\mathrm{S \approx 2}$. Unlike $X$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($X=$ Ca, Sr, and Ba), where the itinerant electrons have a significant contribution, our data suggest that this stripe antiferromagnetically ordered phase in Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$ is a Mott-like insulator with fully localized $3d$ electrons and a high-spin ground state configuration. Nevertheless, the anisotropic exchange couplings appear to be universal in the stripe phase of Fe pnictides and chalcogenides.

Nodeless superconductivity in the presence of spin-density wave in pnictide superconductors: The case of BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$

The characteristics of Fe-based superconductors are manifested in their electronic, magnetic properties, and pairing symmetry of the Cooper pair, but the latter remain to be explored. Usually in these materials, superconductivity coexists and competes with magnetic order, giving unconventional pairing mechanisms. We report on the results of the bulk magnetization measurements in the superconducting state and the low-temperature specific heat down to 0.4 K for BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ single crystals. The {electronic} specific heat displays a pronounced anomaly at the superconducting transition temperature and a small residual part {at low temperatures in the superconducting state}. The normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient increases with Ni doping for $x$ = 0.092, 0.096, and 0.10, which illustrates the competition between magnetism and superconductivity. Our analysis of the temperature dependence of the superconducting-state specific heat and the London penetration depth provides strong evidence for a two-band $s$-wave order parameter. Further, the data of the London penetration depth calculated from the lower critical field follow an exponential temperature dependence, characteristic of a fully gapped superconductor. These observations clearly show that the superconducting gap in the nearly optimally doped compounds is nodeless.

Phase Separation, Competition, and Volume Fraction Control in NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As

We report a detailed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study by combined $^{23}$Na and $^{75}$As measurements over a broad range of doping to map the phase diagram of NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As. In the underdoped regime ($x \le$ 0.017), we find a magnetic phase with robust antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, which we denote the {\it s}-AFM phase, cohabiting with a phase of weak and possibly proximity-induced AFM order ({\it w}-AFM) whose volume fraction $V \simeq 8$\% is approximately constant. Near optimal doping, at $x = 0.0175$, we observe a phase separation between static antiferromagnetism related to the {\it s}-AFM phase and a paramagnetic (PM) phase related to {\it w}-AFM. The volume fraction of AFM phase increases upon cooling, but both the N{é}el temperature and the volume fraction can be suppressed systematically by applying a $c$-axis magnetic field. On cooling below $T_c$, superconductivity occupies the PM region and its volume fraction grows at the expense of the AFM phase, demonstrating a phase separation of the two types of order based on volume exclusion. At higher dopings, static antiferromagnetism and even critical AFM fluctuations are completely suppressed by superconductivity. Thus the phase diagram we establish contains two distinct types of phase separation and reflects a strong competition between AFM and superconducting phases both in real space and in momentum space. We suggest that both this strict mutual exclusion and the robustness of superconductivity against magnetism are consequences of the extreme two-dimensionality of NaFeAs.

The effect of Cr impurity to superconductivity in electron-doped BaFe2-xNixAs2

We use transport and magnetization measurements to study the effect of Cr-doping to the phase diagram of the electron-doped superconducting BaFe2-xNixAs2 iron pnictides. In principle, adding Cr to electron-doped BaFe2-xNixAs2 should be equivalent to the effect of hole-doping. However, we find that Cr doping suppresses superconductivity via impurity effect, while not affecting the normal state resistivity above 100 K. We establish the phase diagram of Cr-doped BaFe2-x-yNixCryAs2 iron pnictides, and demonstrate that Cr-doping near optimal superconductivity restore the long-range antiferromagnetic order suppressed by superconductivity.

Anisotropic neutron spin resonance in underdoped superconducting NaFe1-xCoxAs

We use polarized inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study spin excitations in superconducting NaFe0.985Co0.015As (C15) with static antiferromagnetic (AF) order along the a-axis of the orthorhombic structure and NaFe0.935Co0.045As (C45) without AF order. In previous unpolarized INS work, spin excitations in C15 were found to have a dispersive sharp resonance near Er1=3.25 meV and a broad dispersionless mode at Er2=6 meV. Our neutron polarization analysis reveals that the dispersive resonance in C15 is highly anisotropic and polarized along the a- and c-axis, while the dispersionless mode is isotropic similar to that of C45. Since the a-axis polarized spin excitations of the anisotropic resonance appear below Tc, our data suggests that the itinerant electrons contributing to the magnetism are also coupled to the superconductivity.

Nematic spin correlations in the tetragonal state of uniaxial strained BaFe2-xNixAs2

Understanding the microscopic origins of electronic phases in high-transition temperature (high-Tc) superconductors is important for elucidating the mechanism of superconductivity. In the paramagnetic tetragonal phase of BaFe2-xTxAs2 (where T is Co or Ni) iron pnictides, an in-plane resistivity anisotropy has been observed. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to show that low-energy spin excitations in these materials change from four-fold symmetric to two-fold symmetric at temperatures corresponding to the onset of the in-plane resistivity anisotropy. Because resistivity and spin excitation anisotropies both vanish near optimal superconductivity, we conclude that they are likely intimately connected.

Two spatially separated phases in semiconducting Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$

We report neutron scattering and transport measurements on semiconducting Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$, a compound isostructural and isoelectronic to the well-studied $A_{0.8}$Fe$_{y}$Se$_2 (A=$ K, Rb, Cs, Tl/K) superconducting systems. Both resistivity and DC susceptibility measurements reveal a magnetic phase transition at $T=275$ K. Neutron diffraction studies show that the 275 K transition originates from a phase with rhombic iron vacancy order which exhibits an in-plane stripe antiferromagnetic ordering below 275 K. In addition, interdigitated mesoscopically with the rhombic phase is an ubiquitous phase with $\sqrt{5}\times\sqrt{5}$ iron vacancy order. This phase has a magnetic transition at $T_N=425$ K and an iron vacancy order-disorder transition at $T_{S}=600$ K. These two different structural phases are closely similar to those observed in the isomorphous Se materials. Based on the close similarities of the in-plane antiferromagnetic structures, moments sizes, and ordering temperatures in semiconducting Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$ and K$_{0.81}$Fe$_{1.58}$Se$_2$, we argue that the in-plane antiferromagnetic order arises from strong coupling between local moments. Superconductivity, previously observed in the $A_{0.8}$Fe$_{y}$Se$_{2-z}$S$_z$ system, is absent in Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$, which has a semiconducting ground state. The implied relationship between stripe/block antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in these materials as well as a strategy for further investigation is discussed in this paper.

Short-range cluster spin glass near optimal superconductivity in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$

High-temperature superconductivity in iron pnictides occurs when electrons are doped into their antiferromagnetic (AF) parent compounds. In addition to inducing superconductivity, electron-doping also changes the static commensurate AF order in the undoped parent compounds into short-range incommensurate AF order near optimal superconductivity. Here we use neutron scattering to demonstrate that the incommensurate AF order in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ is not a spin-density-wave arising from the itinerant electrons in nested Fermi surfaces, but consistent with a cluster spin glass in the matrix of the superconducting phase. Therefore, optimal superconductivity in iron pnictides coexists and competes with a mesoscopically separated cluster spin glass phase, much different from the homogeneous coexisting AF and superconducting phases in the underdoped regime.

Evolution of London penetration depth with scattering in single crystals of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$

London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured in single crystals of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$, $x$=0 and 0.07, down to temperatures of 50~mK, $\sim T_c/50$. Isovalent substitution of Na for K significantly increases impurity scattering, with $ρ(T_c)$ rising from 0.2 to 2.2 $μΩ$cm, and leads to a suppression of $T_c$ from 3.5~K to 2.8~K. At the same time, a close to $T$-linear $Δλ(T)$ in pure samples changes to almost $T^2$ in the substituted samples. The behavior never becomes exponential as expected for the accidental nodes, as opposed to $T^2$ dependence in superconductors with symmetry imposed line nodes. The superfluid density in the full temperature range follows a simple clean and dirty $d$-wave dependence, for pure and substituted samples, respectively. This result contradicts suggestions of multi-band scenarios with strongly different gap structure on four sheets of the Fermi surface.

Observation of momentum-confined in-gap impurity state in Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$: evidence for anti-phase $s_{\pm}$ pairing

We report the observation by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of an impurity state located inside the superconducting gap of Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and vanishing above the superconducting critical temperature, for which the spectral weight is confined in momentum space near the Fermi wave vector positions. We demonstrate, supported by theoretical simulations, that this in-gap state originates from weak non-magnetic scattering between bands with opposite sign of the superconducting gap phase. This weak scattering, likely due to off-plane Ba/K disorders, occurs mostly among neighboring Fermi surfaces, suggesting that the superconducting gap phase changes sign within holelike (and electronlike) bands. Our results impose severe restrictions on the models promoted to explain high-temperature superconductivity in these materials.
