Visual Agreement Regularized Training for Multi-Modal Machine Translation

Multi-modal machine translation aims at translating the source sentence into a different language in the presence of the paired image. Previous work suggests that additional visual information only provides dispensable help to translation, which is needed in several very special cases such as translating ambiguous words. To make better use of visual information, this work presents visual agreement regularized training. The proposed approach jointly trains the source-to-target and target-to-source translation models and encourages them to share the same focus on the visual information when generating semantically equivalent visual words (e.g. "ball" in English and "ballon" in French). Besides, a simple yet effective multi-head co-attention model is also introduced to capture interactions between visual and textual features. The results show that our approaches can outperform competitive baselines by a large margin on the Multi30k dataset. Further analysis demonstrates that the proposed regularized training can effectively improve the agreement of attention on the image, leading to better use of visual information.

Experimental measurement of the quantum geometric tensor using coupled qubits in diamond

Geometry and topology are fundamental concepts, which underlie a wide range of fascinating physical phenomena such as topological states of matter and topological defects. In quantum mechanics, the geometry of quantum states is fully captured by the quantum geometric tensor. Using a qubit formed by an NV center in diamond, we perform the first experimental measurement of the complete quantum geometric tensor. Our approach builds on a strong connection between coherent Rabi oscillations upon parametric modulations and the quantum geometry of the underlying states. We then apply our method to a system of two interacting qubits, by exploiting the coupling between the NV center spin and a neighboring $^{13}$C nuclear spin. Our results establish coherent dynamical responses as a versatile probe for quantum geometry, and they pave the way for the detection of novel topological phenomena in solid state.

Pun-GAN: Generative Adversarial Network for Pun Generation

In this paper, we focus on the task of generating a pun sentence given a pair of word senses. A major challenge for pun generation is the lack of large-scale pun corpus to guide the supervised learning. To remedy this, we propose an adversarial generative network for pun generation (Pun-GAN), which does not require any pun corpus. It consists of a generator to produce pun sentences, and a discriminator to distinguish between the generated pun sentences and the real sentences with specific word senses. The output of the discriminator is then used as a reward to train the generator via reinforcement learning, encouraging it to produce pun sentences that can support two word senses simultaneously. Experiments show that the proposed Pun-GAN can generate sentences that are more ambiguous and diverse in both automatic and human evaluation.

Key Fact as Pivot: A Two-Stage Model for Low Resource Table-to-Text Generation

Table-to-text generation aims to translate the structured data into the unstructured text. Most existing methods adopt the encoder-decoder framework to learn the transformation, which requires large-scale training samples. However, the lack of large parallel data is a major practical problem for many domains. In this work, we consider the scenario of low resource table-to-text generation, where only limited parallel data is available. We propose a novel model to separate the generation into two stages: key fact prediction and surface realization. It first predicts the key facts from the tables, and then generates the text with the key facts. The training of key fact prediction needs much fewer annotated data, while surface realization can be trained with pseudo parallel corpus. We evaluate our model on a biography generation dataset. Our model can achieve $27.34$ BLEU score with only $1,000$ parallel data, while the baseline model only obtain the performance of $9.71$ BLEU score.

Automatic Generation of Personalized Comment Based on User Profile

Comments on social media are very diverse, in terms of content, style and vocabulary, which make generating comments much more challenging than other existing natural language generation~(NLG) tasks. Besides, since different user has different expression habits, it is necessary to take the user's profile into consideration when generating comments. In this paper, we introduce the task of automatic generation of personalized comment~(AGPC) for social media. Based on tens of thousands of users' real comments and corresponding user profiles on weibo, we propose Personalized Comment Generation Network~(PCGN) for AGPC. The model utilizes user feature embedding with a gated memory and attends to user description to model personality of users. In addition, external user representation is taken into consideration during the decoding to enhance the comments generation. Experimental results show that our model can generate natural, human-like and personalized comments.

A Dual Reinforcement Learning Framework for Unsupervised Text Style Transfer

Unsupervised text style transfer aims to transfer the underlying style of text but keep its main content unchanged without parallel data. Most existing methods typically follow two steps: first separating the content from the original style, and then fusing the content with the desired style. However, the separation in the first step is challenging because the content and style interact in subtle ways in natural language. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a dual reinforcement learning framework to directly transfer the style of the text via a one-step mapping model, without any separation of content and style. Specifically, we consider the learning of the source-to-target and target-to-source mappings as a dual task, and two rewards are designed based on such a dual structure to reflect the style accuracy and content preservation, respectively. In this way, the two one-step mapping models can be trained via reinforcement learning, without any use of parallel data. Automatic evaluations show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art systems by a large margin, especially with more than 8 BLEU points improvement averaged on two benchmark datasets. Human evaluations also validate the effectiveness of our model in terms of style accuracy, content preservation and fluency. Our code and data, including outputs of all baselines and our model are available at https://github.com/luofuli/DualLanST.

Semantic-Unit-Based Dilated Convolution for Multi-Label Text Classification

We propose a novel model for multi-label text classification, which is based on sequence-to-sequence learning. The model generates higher-level semantic unit representations with multi-level dilated convolution as well as a corresponding hybrid attention mechanism that extracts both the information at the word-level and the level of the semantic unit. Our designed dilated convolution effectively reduces dimension and supports an exponential expansion of receptive fields without loss of local information, and the attention-over-attention mechanism is able to capture more summary relevant information from the source context. Results of our experiments show that the proposed model has significant advantages over the baseline models on the dataset RCV1-V2 and Ren-CECps, and our analysis demonstrates that our model is competitive to the deterministic hierarchical models and it is more robust to classifying low-frequency labels.

Learning Unsupervised Word Mapping by Maximizing Mean Discrepancy

Cross-lingual word embeddings aim to capture common linguistic regularities of different languages, which benefit various downstream tasks ranging from machine translation to transfer learning. Recently, it has been shown that these embeddings can be effectively learned by aligning two disjoint monolingual vector spaces through a linear transformation (word mapping). In this work, we focus on learning such a word mapping without any supervision signal. Most previous work of this task adopts parametric metrics to measure distribution differences, which typically requires a sophisticated alternate optimization process, either in the form of \emph{minmax game} or intermediate \emph{density estimation}. This alternate optimization process is relatively hard and unstable. In order to avoid such sophisticated alternate optimization, we propose to learn unsupervised word mapping by directly maximizing the mean discrepancy between the distribution of transferred embedding and target embedding. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed model outperforms competitive baselines by a large margin.

A Deep Reinforced Sequence-to-Set Model for Multi-Label Text Classification

Multi-label text classification (MLTC) aims to assign multiple labels to each sample in the dataset. The labels usually have internal correlations. However, traditional methods tend to ignore the correlations between labels. In order to capture the correlations between labels, the sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) model views the MLTC task as a sequence generation problem, which achieves excellent performance on this task. However, the Seq2Seq model is not suitable for the MLTC task in essence. The reason is that it requires humans to predefine the order of the output labels, while some of the output labels in the MLTC task are essentially an unordered set rather than an ordered sequence. This conflicts with the strict requirement of the Seq2Seq model for the label order. In this paper, we propose a novel sequence-to-set framework utilizing deep reinforcement learning, which not only captures the correlations between labels, but also reduces the dependence on the label order. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed method outperforms the competitive baselines by a large margin.

Identifying High-Quality Chinese News Comments Based on Multi-Target Text Matching Model

With the development of information technology, there is an explosive growth in the number of online comment concerning news, blogs and so on. The massive comments are overloaded, and often contain some misleading and unwelcome information. Therefore, it is necessary to identify high-quality comments and filter out low-quality comments. In this work, we introduce a novel task: high-quality comment identification (HQCI), which aims to automatically assess the quality of online comments. First, we construct a news comment corpus, which consists of news, comments, and the corresponding quality label. Second, we analyze the dataset, and find the quality of comments can be measured in three aspects: informativeness, consistency, and novelty. Finally, we propose a novel multi-target text matching model, which can measure three aspects by referring to the news and surrounding comments. Experimental results show that our method can outperform various baselines by a large margin on the news dataset.

Learning Sentiment Memories for Sentiment Modification without Parallel Data

The task of sentiment modification requires reversing the sentiment of the input and preserving the sentiment-independent content. However, aligned sentences with the same content but different sentiments are usually unavailable. Due to the lack of such parallel data, it is hard to extract sentiment independent content and reverse the sentiment in an unsupervised way. Previous work usually can not reconcile sentiment transformation and content preservation. In this paper, motivated by the fact the non-emotional context (e.g., "staff") provides strong cues for the occurrence of emotional words (e.g., "friendly"), we propose a novel method that automatically extracts appropriate sentiment information from learned sentiment memories according to specific context. Experiments show that our method substantially improves the content preservation degree and achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

Observation of Floquet Raman transition in a driven solid-state spin system

We experimentally observe Floquet Raman transitions in the weakly driven solid state spin system of nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The periodically driven spin system simulates a two-band Wannier-Stark ladder model, and allows us to observe coherent spin state transfer arising from Raman transition mediated by Floquet synthetic levels. It also leads to the prediction of analog photon-assisted Floquet Raman transition and dynamical localisation in a driven two-level quantum system. The demonstrated rich Floquet dynamics offers new capabilities to achieve effective Floquet coherent control of a quantum system with potential applications in various types of quantum technologies based on driven quantum dynamics. In particular, the Floquet-Raman system may be used as a quantum simulator for the physics of periodically driven systems.

SGM: Sequence Generation Model for Multi-label Classification

Multi-label classification is an important yet challenging task in natural language processing. It is more complex than single-label classification in that the labels tend to be correlated. Existing methods tend to ignore the correlations between labels. Besides, different parts of the text can contribute differently for predicting different labels, which is not considered by existing models. In this paper, we propose to view the multi-label classification task as a sequence generation problem, and apply a sequence generation model with a novel decoder structure to solve it. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed methods outperform previous work by a substantial margin. Further analysis of experimental results demonstrates that the proposed methods not only capture the correlations between labels, but also select the most informative words automatically when predicting different labels.

Automatic Academic Paper Rating Based on Modularized Hierarchical Convolutional Neural Network

As more and more academic papers are being submitted to conferences and journals, evaluating all these papers by professionals is time-consuming and can cause inequality due to the personal factors of the reviewers. In this paper, in order to assist professionals in evaluating academic papers, we propose a novel task: automatic academic paper rating (AAPR), which automatically determine whether to accept academic papers. We build a new dataset for this task and propose a novel modularized hierarchical convolutional neural network to achieve automatic academic paper rating. Evaluation results show that the proposed model outperforms the baselines by a large margin. The dataset and code are available at \url{https://github.com/lancopku/AAPR}

Unambiguous nuclear spin detection using engineered quantum sensing sequence

Sensing, localising and identifying individual nuclear spins or frequency components of a signal in the presence of a noisy environments requires the development of robust and selective methods of dynamical decoupling. An important challenge that remains to be addressed in this context are spurious higher order resonances in current dynamical decoupling sequences as they can lead to the misidentification of nuclei or of different frequency components of external signals. Here we overcome this challenge with engineered quantum sensing sequences that achieve both, enhanced robustness and the simultaneous suppression of higher order harmonic resonances. We demonstrate experimentally the principle using a single nitrogen-vacancy center spin sensor which we apply to the unambiguous detection of external protons.
